Why are video game development/programmer jobs paid so low (at least starting out)?

I want to do it, but not for 40,000/yr until I have 5-10+ years of work experience. I'm not young, I'm turning 36 and have big things to pay for.

Hi everyone, I'm new and just joined. I have been working on self learning this stuff - with C++ as the language I chose to learn first because I did some research and I want to be a video game developer/ designer first, and I also would like to become a software developer as well, I think I would love to learn both as I could hopefully get hired to do one of those two options in the next few years and still have maybe dome time to work on the other as a hobby as well.

for example, the software id like to develop would help me with my game assets and game engine I want to create in C++ i will learn C# Im already learning some Python, but I want to focus on C++ for now for an internship opportunity I really want to try my best for - so initially at least my Git HUB portfolio will have to reflect some impressive work in C++ only. Later on, I plan to learn Java, more Python, and C# and probably some fundamentals of C along with mastery of C++ I want to be totally equipped with the right stuff for learning game dev. i realize game development is a whole lot more than C++ but for this internship they want only 2 eligibility reqs - must have a programming fundamentals and basics background and must have a solid C++ background.

i'm willing to pay but im federally disabled at the moment and cannot get a retail job or any other job that requires a lot of standing, walking around, and any lifting right now. I mean like less than 3-5 lbd max lifting. so I only get a very low amount once a month for ssi only disability income, but since I really have to learn to create impressive C++ written projects for this internship application i want right now, Id like to be able to pay someone some fair amount biweekly that I can afford.

NOt xpecting you to be my teacher and construct lesson plans - just answer questions on the errors i keep getting a not uneerstadning why and getting dtarted on the Git HUb portfolio projevts in C++ I use MS viual Studio 2022 already and im pretty decently comfortable with it thanks!
