ATAR for Medicine: Minimum ATARs, UCAT and Interviews for 2027 Entry

Most Australian school-leaver medicine programs set a minimum ATAR between 90 and 96 for 2027 entry, but the ATARs that actually receive offers are usually much higher, often 99 or above. Your ATAR only gets you past the first gate. Most programs then rank you on the UCAT ANZ and an interview, and some add the Casper test or subject prerequisites such as Chemistry.

ATAR for medicine key facts (2027 entry)

- Published minimum ATARs range from 90 (Monash, Adelaide University) to 96 (UNSW), with 99.95 for the University of Sydney's double degree medicine program.
- UNSW's course page lists a recent lowest ATAR of 99.75 for local applicants, well above its 96.00 minimum.
- Most programs need the UCAT ANZ, sat in the middle of Year 12. The University of Sydney's double degree does not.
- Rural applicants often have lower minimums: 91.00 at UNSW, 91.50 at Charles Sturt and Western Sydney, and 85.00 from rural or remote schools for the Newcastle and New England program.
- JCU does not set ATAR thresholds for medicine; it selects on academic results, an online application and an interview.

Minimum ATAR for medicine by university (2027 entry)

Each figure below is taken from the university's own course page or its admissions centre listing, checked on 21 October 2026. A minimum is the lowest ATAR that can be considered, not the ATAR that gets an offer.

Requirements change each year, so check the university before you apply.

Minimum ATAR versus the ATAR that gets an offer

A minimum ATAR is a gate, not a target. Monash says its minimum is 90 but that the final ATAR is significantly higher in most intakes. Adelaide University says the actual ATAR needed is typically much higher than its 90.00 minimum. UNSW lists a minimum of 96.00 for 2027 but a recent lowest ATAR of 99.75 for local applicants. Plan on needing a top ATAR as well as a strong UCAT and interview.

Very few students reach the top of the scale: in 2025, 53 NSW students and 42 Victorian students received 99.95. See {{link:how-many-students-get-99-95|how many students get 99.95}}.

What else selection uses

RequirementWhat it isWho uses it (2027)
UCAT ANZA clinical aptitude test sat in the middle of Year 12Most programs in the table; not the University of Sydney double degree
InterviewPanel or multiple mini interview, often onlineMost programs; not the University of Tasmania
Casper testAn online situational judgement testCurtin
Subject prerequisitesUsually English and ChemistryFor example Monash, Curtin and the University of Tasmania
RecencyYear 12 completed recentlyFor example Monash (within two years, no other tertiary study)

Rural, Indigenous and equity pathways

Many programs set lower minimums or reserve places for rural students and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. For 2027 entry, UNSW's rural minimum was 91.00, Charles Sturt and Western Sydney's 91.50, and the Newcastle and New England program's 85.00 for students from rural or remote high schools. The University of Tasmania adds up to five points for rural school leavers through its Rural Application Process. These change your selection rank for medicine, not your ATAR. See {{link:atar-vs-selection-rank|ATAR vs selection rank}} and {{link:atar-equity-schemes-explained|equity schemes}}.

Timeline for a Year 12 applicant

- Early Year 12: register for the UCAT ANZ and check each program's prerequisites.
- Middle of Year 12: sit the UCAT ANZ.
- Around September: apply through your admissions centre and any separate medicine application. For 2027 entry, UAC's medicine deadlines fell between 25 and 30 September 2026.
- November to January: interviews for shortlisted applicants.
- January: most offers.

If your ATAR falls short

- Graduate entry. Complete a bachelor degree and apply for a graduate medicine program, which uses your degree results and usually the GAMSAT instead of the ATAR.
- Related health degrees. Biomedical science, pharmacy, nursing and other health degrees lead to many careers and can also lead to graduate medicine.
- Rural and equity pathways. Check whether you qualify for lower minimums or reserved places.

More routes are in {{link:low-atar-pathways|pathways with a lower ATAR}}.

Medicine ATAR myths

- "A 99.95 guarantees medicine." No. Most programs rank on the UCAT and interview as well.
- "The minimum is the cut-off." The minimum lets you apply. Offers usually go to much higher ATARs.
- "Bonus points raise my ATAR." Rural and equity adjustments change your selection rank for the course, not your ATAR.

FAQ

What ATAR do you need for medicine?
Published minimums for 2027 entry range from 90 to 96, with 99.95 for the University of Sydney's double degree. The ATARs that receive offers are usually much higher, and most programs also need the UCAT ANZ and an interview.

Can you get into medicine with a 90 ATAR?
You can apply to programs with a minimum of 90, such as Monash and Adelaide University, but both say the ATAR needed in practice is typically much higher. Graduate entry is another route.

Which medical schools do not interview?
The University of Tasmania states it does not conduct interviews for its medicine program; it ranks school leavers on ATAR, with the UCAT ANZ used to separate equal ATARs.

Do you need the UCAT for medicine?
For most school-leaver programs, yes. The University of Sydney's double degree medicine program does not use it for 2027 entry.

Is there a lower ATAR for rural students?
Often. For 2027 entry, UNSW's rural minimum was 91.00, Charles Sturt and Western Sydney's 91.50, and 85.00 for rural or remote students in the Newcastle and New England program.

ATAR for Law: Selection Ranks at Australian Law Schools

Law in Australia needs a high ATAR at most universities, but the figure varies widely: recent entry ranks run from about 84 at QUT to a guaranteed 99.50 for combined law at the University of Sydney. Most law schools in NSW, the ACT and Queensland's UQ sit between 96 and 98. Check whether a figure is a guaranteed ATAR, a minimum or last year's lowest selection rank, because they mean different things.

ATAR for law key facts

- University of Sydney combined law: guaranteed ATAR 99.50, subject to non-ATAR criteria (UAC listing).
- UNSW Arts/Law: 2026 lowest selection rank 97.8 plus the Law Admission Test; from 2027, entry is on selection rank alone.
- Monash Laws (Honours): 2026 lowest selection rank 95.00, but the lowest ATAR before adjustments was 85.35.
- QUT Laws (Honours): semester 1, 2026 minimum selection threshold 84.00.
- Some universities, such as the University of Melbourne, teach law only as a graduate Juris Doctor.

ATAR for law by university

Monash allows up to 10 points of adjustment. See {{link:atar-vs-selection-rank|ATAR vs selection rank}} and {{link:atar-bonus-points|ATAR bonus points}}.

Single law degree or double degree?

Many law schools teach the Bachelor of Laws as a double degree with arts, commerce, science or another field, and the double degree can need a different rank. Sydney's guarantee applies to its combined law courses; UNSW publishes a separate rank for each double degree. Check the exact course code you plan to list.

Other routes into law

- Graduate Juris Doctor. Complete any bachelor degree, then apply for a JD. Some universities, such as the University of Melbourne, offer law only this way.
- Transfer after first year. Strong first-year results in another degree can support an internal transfer into law at many universities.
- Equity and access schemes. Schemes such as SEAS and EAS can lift your selection rank. See {{link:atar-equity-schemes-explained|equity schemes}}.

More options are in {{link:low-atar-pathways|pathways with a lower ATAR}}.

Law ATAR myths

- "Every law degree needs 99." Recent ranks range from about 84 to 99.50 across the eight schools above.
- "The published number is a guarantee." Only some figures are guarantees. Most are last year's lowest rank.
- "You need to study Legal Studies at school." Not for the courses we checked: UNSW Arts/Law lists no assumed knowledge, and UQ and QUT ask for English, not Legal Studies.

FAQ

What ATAR do you need for law?
It depends on the university. Recent figures range from an 84.00 threshold at QUT to a 99.50 guarantee for combined law at the University of Sydney, with many law schools between 96 and 98.

What ATAR do you need for law at UNSW?
UNSW's Arts/Law listed a 2026 lowest selection rank of 97.8 plus the Law Admission Test, and a lowest ATAR of 85.0. From 2027, entry is based on selection rank alone.

What ATAR do you need for law at Monash?
Monash's Laws (Honours) at Clayton listed a 2026 lowest selection rank of 95.00 and a lowest ATAR of 85.35. Its Monash Guarantee for eligible applicants is 85 for 2027.

Can I study law with a low ATAR?
Yes, through a different first degree and then a Juris Doctor, an internal transfer, or a university with a lower rank. Equity schemes can also raise your selection rank.

ATAR for Nursing: Selection Ranks and Guaranteed ATARs

Most Bachelor of Nursing courses in Australia admit students with ATARs from the 60s to the low 80s. Recent official figures range from a guaranteed 65.00 at the University of New England to a lowest adjusted rank of 83.1 at the University of Queensland. Because adjustment factors are common in nursing, many students are offered places with ATARs below the published selection rank.

ATAR for nursing key facts

- UQ Bachelor of Nursing: lowest adjusted rank offered in Semester 1, 2026 was 83.1 (78.4 before adjustments).
- QUT Bachelor of Nursing: minimum selection threshold 74.00 for Semester 1, 2026.
- RMIT Bachelor of Nursing: 2026 lowest selection rank 72.90, but the lowest ATAR before adjustments was 52.90.
- UTS Bachelor of Nursing: lowest selection rank 70 for recent school leavers, Autumn 2026.
- Monash Nursing: Monash Guarantee of 70 for 2027 at Clayton and Peninsula; UNE: guaranteed ATAR 65.00 for 2027.

ATAR for nursing by university

Each figure is from the university's own course page or its admissions centre listing, checked on 21 October 2026.

UniversityFigureWhat the figure is
University of Queensland83 (lowest 83.1 adjusted, 78.4 unadjusted)Entry score threshold and lowest offers, Semester 1, 2026
QUT74.00 (lowest offer 66.45 before adjustments)Minimum selection threshold, Semester 1, 2026
RMIT72.90 (lowest ATAR 52.90)Lowest selection rank offered in 2026
UTS70Lowest selection rank for a recent school leaver, Autumn 2026, full time
Monash University (Clayton)70 guarantee (lowest ATAR 66.85 in 2026)Monash Guarantee for 2027 entry, for eligible applicants
Monash University (Peninsula)70 guarantee (lowest ATAR 60.50 in 2026)Monash Guarantee for 2027 entry, for eligible applicants
University of New England65.00Guaranteed ATAR for 2027 entry

Sources: UQ Bachelor of Nursing program page; QTAC listing for QUT Bachelor of Nursing; RMIT Bachelor of Nursing admissions transparency page; UTS, Monash and UNE course pages. Figures change each year.

Why the lowest ATAR can be far below the selection rank

RMIT's 2026 nursing intake shows the effect clearly: the lowest selection rank offered was 72.90, but the lowest ATAR before adjustments was 52.90. QUT's lowest offer was 74.00 with adjustments and 66.45 without. Adjustment factors such as equity schemes, regional adjustments and subject bonuses lift selection ranks, and nursing courses use them widely. Check what you may be eligible for in {{link:atar-vs-selection-rank|ATAR vs selection rank}}.

Median offers

UniversityMedian offer before adjustmentsMedian offer with adjustments
UQ (Semester 1, 2026)88.3589.95
QUT (Semester 1, 2026)80.1082.60
RMIT (2026)61.2079.15

The median is the middle offer, so half of the students offered places had higher ranks and half lower. It is a better sense of a typical student than the lowest figure.

Other routes into nursing

- Diploma of Nursing first. Enrolled nurses can enter many bachelor programs with credit; QUT, for example, assesses its enrolled nurse entry on diploma results.
- Pathway courses. Several universities run undergraduate certificates or diplomas that lead into nursing.
- Equity and regional schemes. These can lift your selection rank. See {{link:atar-equity-schemes-explained|equity schemes}}.
- Graduate entry. Some universities offer a graduate Master of Nursing for people with another degree.

More options are in {{link:low-atar-pathways|pathways with a lower ATAR}}.

Nursing ATAR myths

- "You need a 90 for nursing." Most published figures above sit between 65 and 83.
- "The selection rank is the lowest ATAR accepted." It includes adjustments. Lowest ATARs are often well below it.
- "Nursing does not need prerequisites." Many courses assume English; QUT, for example, lists English as assumed knowledge.

FAQ

What ATAR do you need for nursing?
Most courses admit students in the 60s to low 80s. Recent official figures range from a guaranteed 65.00 at UNE to 83.1 at UQ, and adjustment factors let many students in below the published rank.

What ATAR do you need for nursing at UQ?
UQ's entry score threshold for the Bachelor of Nursing was 83 for Semester 1, 2026, with a lowest adjusted offer of 83.1 and a median of 89.95.

Can I do nursing with a 60 ATAR?
Possibly. Several courses offered places to students with ATARs in the 50s and 60s once adjustments were added, and a Diploma of Nursing or pathway course is another route.

Monash, Deakin and La Trobe each run their own VCE ATAR calculator, and Deakin, La Trobe and RMIT also publish tools that estimate adjustment points; Swinburne's ATAR calculator matches an ATAR to its courses. The university calculators are built on earlier years of VTAC scaling data and are meant as a guide. Use a VCE calculator to estimate your ATAR, then use the university's own tool to see how its adjustments and guarantees apply to the courses you want.

University ATAR calculators key facts

- Monash: its ATAR calculator scales raw study scores using last year's VTAC data; the Monash Guarantee ATAR starts at 70.00 for eligible students.
- Deakin: its ATAR calculator uses VTAC's 2024 scaling report; its equity schemes calculator is set up for 2027 applications using 2025 data, with up to 27 aggregate points.
- La Trobe: separate ATAR and adjustment factor calculators; a maximum of 20 aggregate adjustment points.
- RMIT: the maximum equity adjustment is 16 points (20 aggregate points); a postcode tool checks regional adjustments.
- Swinburne: the ATAR calculator lists courses for an ATAR; Guaranteed Entry ATARs are checked against your selection rank.

What each university's tool does

Each description below comes from the university's own website, checked on 22 October 2026.

Which scaling data the calculators use

A university calculator is only as current as the scaling year inside it. Monash says its calculator uses last year's VTAC data, La Trobe says it uses VTAC scaling data from previous years, and Deakin's ATAR calculator names VTAC's 2024 Study Score Scaling Report. Scaling moves a little every year, so two calculators can give different estimates for the same study scores. Our {{link:vce-atar-calculator|VCE ATAR calculator}} uses VTAC's 2025 report and shows every scaled score, so you can compare it with any university tool. The full table is in {{link:vce-scaling-2025|VCE scaling 2025}}.

Monash: ATAR calculator and the Monash Guarantee

Monash describes its calculator as scaling your raw study scores to give an estimated ATAR based on last year's VTAC data, to be used as a guide only. Separately, most Monash undergraduate courses have a Monash Guarantee ATAR, which is lower than the expected selection rank. If you are eligible, reach the Monash Guarantee ATAR for your course (starting at 70.00) and meet the entry requirements, Monash guarantees an offer.

Monash lists these groups as possibly eligible for the Guarantee: students who have experienced financial disadvantage, live in a low socio-economic area, live in or attend school in a regional or remote area, are Indigenous Australians, attend a school on Monash's under-represented list, or live in Australia as an asylum seeker or refugee. Equity schemes (formerly SEAS) are separate: they raise your selection rank, which Monash uses when making offers. Its Indigenous Entry Scheme admits Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants with an achieved ATAR of 50 or more, higher for some courses.

Deakin: ATAR calculator, equity schemes calculator and Guaranteed ATAR

Deakin runs three things that are easy to mix up:

- The ATAR calculator estimates scaled study scores from your raw scores using VTAC's 2024 scaling report.
- The equity schemes calculator estimates adjustment points. Deakin says it uses 2025 data for 2027 applications, that students can receive up to 27 additional aggregate points including equity scheme points and subject adjustments, and that the figure shown may differ from your final VTAC adjustment and is not an offer.
- The Deakin Guaranteed ATAR is published upfront for most undergraduate courses and is, on average, 10 points below the lowest selection rank for eligible students. It is based on your ATAR before any adjustments.

Deakin lists the Guaranteed ATAR groups as students at a Deakin under-represented school, students who live or study in a regional or remote location, and students of Indigenous Australian descent. You are checked automatically if you stay opted in to the "personal information and location" category in your VTAC application. Deakin's own example: if the guaranteed ATAR for your course is 65 and your ATAR is at least 65 without adjustments, you are guaranteed an offer. You may be eligible for both the guarantee and equity schemes.

La Trobe: ATAR calculator and adjustment factors calculator

La Trobe's ATAR calculator takes up to six VCE Units 3 and 4 subjects, including at least one English, and estimates your ATAR from earlier VTAC scaling data. Its adjustment factors calculator then estimates SEAS, scholarship and other adjustment points. La Trobe explains that these points are added to your raw aggregate, which re-ranks your ATAR, rather than adding directly to the ATAR, and that you can receive a maximum of 20 aggregate adjustment points across all adjustments. It notes the estimate is based on the previous admission period and that an adjusted ATAR does not guarantee entry.

RMIT: adjustment factors and SNAP

RMIT publishes how its adjustments work. The maximum equity adjustment through equity schemes and scholarships or RMIT Access is 16 points, or 20 aggregate points. Its Schools Network Access Program (SNAP) gives priority entry to students from designated Victorian schools whose ATAR is within 20 points of the lowest selection rank for their preferred program. RMIT also has a postcode check for regional adjustments.

RMIT's own worked example: an ATAR of 62.00 is 109.61 aggregate points. Add 10 aggregate points for location and 2 for a subject adjustment, and the selection rank is about 70.85, read from VTAC's ATAR to aggregate table. RMIT stresses that equity adjustments do not guarantee entry.

Swinburne: ATAR calculator and Guaranteed Entry ATAR

Swinburne's ATAR calculator matches a predicted or actual ATAR with a list of Swinburne courses. It may show some courses with a slightly higher ATAR than the one you enter, because subject bonuses or SEAS could still bring you into range. If you reach a course's Guaranteed Entry ATAR and meet the other requirements, Swinburne guarantees an offer, and it uses your adjusted ATAR (selection rank) to decide whether you have reached it.

Guarantees compared

UniversityGuaranteeChecked against
MonashMonash Guarantee ATAR, from 70.00, for eligible studentsYour ATAR, with eligibility conditions
DeakinDeakin Guaranteed ATAR, on average 10 below the lowest selection rank, for eligible studentsYour ATAR before adjustments
SwinburneGuaranteed Entry ATAR for each courseYour selection rank (adjusted ATAR)
La Trobe and RMITNo guarantee from adjustments: both say an adjusted ATAR does not guarantee entrySelection rank against other applicants

The difference between an ATAR and a selection rank is explained in {{link:atar-vs-selection-rank|ATAR vs selection rank}}.

How to use these tools together

- Estimate your ATAR. Enter your expected study scores in the {{link:vce-atar-calculator|VCE ATAR calculator}}. If you only know your marks, start with the {{link:vce-study-score-calculator|VCE study score calculator}}.
- Add likely adjustments. Use the optional adjustment points box in our calculator, or the university's own tool, to see a selection rank estimate for a specific course.
- Check guarantees. See whether you are eligible for the Monash Guarantee, the Deakin Guaranteed ATAR or Swinburne's Guaranteed Entry ATAR for the courses you want.
- Compare with the course page. Last year's lowest selection rank and lowest ATAR are on each course page. See {{link:what-atar-do-i-need|what ATAR do I need}}.
- Apply for equity schemes. Equity schemes only count if you apply through VTAC. See {{link:atar-equity-schemes-explained|SEAS and EAS explained}}.

University ATAR calculator myths

- "The university's calculator is the official ATAR." Only VTAC calculates your ATAR. University calculators are estimates built on earlier data.
- "Adjustment points raise my ATAR." They raise your selection rank for particular courses. Your ATAR stays the same. See {{link:atar-bonus-points|ATAR bonus points}}.
- "Every guarantee works the same way." Deakin checks your ATAR before adjustments, while Swinburne checks your selection rank.

FAQ

Is the Monash ATAR calculator accurate?
Monash says its calculator uses last year's VTAC data and should be used as a guide only. Scaling changes each year, so treat any calculator, including ours, as an estimate.

What data does the Deakin ATAR calculator use?
Deakin's VCE ATAR calculator says its scaled scores are based on VTAC's 2024 Study Score Scaling Report. Its separate equity schemes calculator uses 2025 data for 2027 applications.

How many adjustment points can I get at La Trobe?
La Trobe says the maximum aggregate adjustment is 20 points across all adjustments, although some courses have their own rules.

What is the maximum equity adjustment at RMIT?
RMIT lists a maximum equity adjustment of 16 points, or 20 aggregate points, through equity schemes and scholarships or RMIT Access.

Is the Deakin Guaranteed ATAR based on my adjusted ATAR?
No. Deakin says it is based on your original ATAR before any equity adjustments.
