Microsoft Ignite is an annual conference for developers and IT professionals. The first conference, then known as TechEd, happened in 1993 in Orlando, Florida, United States. In 2020, it went all online.

This year together with my good colleague Rasmus Jaqué, I got the chance to host a a session about developer community in Denmark & highlights of their projects & initiatives. This is a short recap about this session.

 Corti

Rasmus had a chance to talk to Lars Maaløe CTO from Corti. Corti was founded in 2016 in San Francisco, they felt assured that the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare could enable medical professionals to be better and faster, improving patient outcomes on a global scale. With this showcased project, Corti has build a voice-based digital assistant powered by cutting-edge artificial intelligence, capable of understanding patients talking in natural language. It is used when someone calls for an ambulance in Denmark, the AI agent will be listening in. Using sound-recognition software, it will analyze words and background noises—like a victim’s unusual breathing, even if that person is not the caller—to alert a dispatcher if it believes a heart attack is in progress.

Corti is a very good example on how AI & Machine Learning can save lives.

📺 Watch the video interview bellow between Lars and Rasmus to learn more about this project and their tech journey 👇

 Trackman

Rasmus also had a chance to talk to Ulrich Landbo Head of Team Sports Application at TrackMan.
TrackMan has been on the forefront of providing reliable performance data in sports since 2003. Their technologies have become an indispensable part of sport analysis as the data they provide brings clarity, confidence and performance to all levels of play.
Trackman's proprietary, radar-based technology solutions deliver instant, actionable knowledge in a broad variety of sports.

In golf, hundreds of tour players, thousands of coaches, golf facilities, and golf equipment manufacturers trust TrackMan in their daily work.

In baseball, all MLB stadiums and thousands of amateur stadiums rely on TrackMan’s technology to deliver cutting edge statistics to players, coaches and fans.

Other sports like tennis, cricket and soccer, also use their technology to develop talent and products.

Trackman's technologies are also used by the leading broadcasting companies around the globe to cover tournaments of the highest caliber, enhancing both viewer engagement and entertainment.

📺 Watch the video interview bellow between Ulrich and Rasmus to learn more about Trackman's radar technology, what technology it is powered by and their tech journey 👇

 Community Panel

For those of you who know me in person you all know that community is super important to me. I believe I not only developed my technical skills via community but also I gained many soft skills by getting involved in organizing community events, mentoring others or speak at event.
Because of the importance of this topic Rasmus and I organized a panel discussion with three of most active community leaders whom are behind many different community driven events in Denmark.

In this session, panelists are talking about the communities they are leading, their top learnings and why they believe all of you should look around to find various community driven initiatives and get yourself involved.

📺 Watch this panel discussion 👇

Morten Christensen
Morten works at Umbraco HQ where he helps build Umbraco Cloud and the Headless Cloud offering. Morten is also an Azure MVP, Azure Lover and community addict. He lives in Copenhagen where he helps organize meetups and other community events. When he is not working on Azure or doing Community events you can find him either learning about the newest things in Azure or building/buying LEGO sets (there should probably have been a "LEGO addict" part somewhere in this profile as well - according to his bank account statements).

Marilag Dimatulac
Marilag is the Co-Founder and Chief Solution Architect at Dewise, a software development company based in Copenhagen and Manila. To give back to the tech community, she organize events for Azure User Group Denmark and Manila, and speaks regularly at meetups and conferences. She lives two lives on each side of the planet, defying distance, abolishing cross-cultural barriers and scaling walls, to work, play and spend time with wonderfully diverse people.

Lisa Mallner
Lisa is an AI Investment Manager at Copenhagen Capacity and supports business development for high tech companies into Greater Copenhagen.

Leading up to (and during) the month of October, we want to help you discover open source projects to work on, and put your Hacktoberfest contributions to excellent use. Meet Wassim Chegham senior cloud advocate at Microsoft & core contributor to Compodoc.

Check out this page regularly for more interviews with contributors & maintainers

Hi I'm Wassim senior cloud advocate at Microsoft. The project I'm going to present you today is Compodoc.

What can you tell us about your project?
Compodoc is a documentation generator tool that is written for Angular or any TypeScript application.
You would basically use it to automatically generate application from your Angular code or your Angular app and you would have this nice website with your whole documentation generated and extracted from your Angular code auto magically for you.
Compodoc helps Angular developers providing a clear and helpful documentation of their application.
Others developers of your team, or internet visitors for a public documentation, can easily understand the features of your application or library.

What contributions are you welcoming?
We're actually welcoming any kind of contributions. You can help us in fixing typos in the readme or on the website itself. You can also contribute by adding new unit tests or fixing our broken unit tests.
Also, we need your help with improving our own documentation for Compodoc or whether like to add missing features or let us know about these missed features.

What skills do people need to contribute?
Compodoc is a CLI tool which means it's a command-line interface tool written in TypeScript and then runs on top of Node.JS. So, familiarities with TypeScript, JavaScript and CLI would be great.
It would be great if you know how to access the file system from Node.JS or manipulate files via it.
Otherwise any basic knowledge with JavaScript or TypeScript and Node.JS.

How do I get started?
In order to get started you could go to Compodoc.app which is the the official website and the best place to familiarities yourself with the project. You could also clone and install the tool locally and run it against any Angular application.
Otherwise you can go on the GitHub repo of Compodoc and check all the open issues. Some of them are labeled with the oktoberfest.
You are welcome to start with those.
Otherwise feel free to pick up any um to pick any.

Thank you very much 🙏

Leading up to (and during) the month of October, we want to help you discover open source projects to work on, and put your Hacktoberfest contributions to excellent use. Meet Filip Bruun Bech-Larsen program manager of Umbraco.

Check out this page regularly for more interviews with contributors & maintainers

Hi I'm Filip program manager of Umbraco CMS. We're a CMS that known and loved for its flexibility and great user experience.

What can you tell us about your project?
We're the most popular open source CMS on the .Net stack. We have more than 500,000 active installs and we have about 500 contributors already on GitHub. Since we moved the project to GitHub a couple years ago we have more than 6000 PRs already. So, you can say we're a professionally managed open source project.
We have our own company behind but but the main project is open source and free for all to use and to contribute to.

What contributions are you welcoming?
We're welcoming tons of contributions in many different areas. We are migrating the product to .Net Core as we speak and we're looking for contributions in that. We have issues on GitHub marked as up for grabs and Good first issues.
For the stability of the migration to be successful we're also investing heavily in tests so we're migrating all our tests also and also adding more and more cypress acceptance tests. We are really looking for help on that as well.
If you're not a developer maybe you can help us writing documentation. There's a separate repository for that on GitHub.
Also, if you just want to try out the product and give us your feedback that's very valuable as well. Let us know what doesn't feel intuitive to you and what would you think were different and what would you like us to be.

This year we are doing our own hacktoberfest along with oktoberfest so if you contribute to the Umbraco project, to our docs or to any of our community packages, you will actually get a little extra prize from us.

What skills do people need to contribute?
If you're a developer our our back office is written in .Net so it's the Microsoft stack and that's the toolkit you'll need for that.
The front end is a Single Page Application (SPA), so, you'll need to write JavaScript to contribute to that.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, we really want contributions for our docs or feedback on the product in general.

How do I get started?
We've set a little startup guide on our website so if you go to umbra.co/hacktober. There's a whole getting started guide or if you prefer you can just go directly to our repository on GitHub.
Thanks so much for contributing to Umbraco and we look forward to receiving your Prs.

Leading up to (and during) the month of October, we want to help you discover open source projects to work on, and put your Hacktoberfest contributions to excellent use. Meet Beth Pan Software Engineer at Microsoft & core team member of Microsoft Graph Toolkit Open Source project.

Check out this page regularly for more interviews with contributors & maintainers

Hello my name is Beth, I'm on the PAX team at Microsoft and I work with first party and third party developer ecosystems, specifically around Microsoft Graph and my team owns and manages the Microsoft Graph Toolkit open source project.

What can you tell us about your project?

Microsoft Graph Toolkit is a collection of reusable web components and helpers for accessing and working with Microsoft Graph.

These web components are fully functional right out of the box and you can easily integrate them with any web framework such as React, Angular, Vue, ...

It is designed to make it super easy to add Microsoft Graph powered controls into your web application, Team tabs or SharePoint web parts. So, you can use Microsoft Graph toolkit to
authenticate with and fetch data from the Microsoft graph
by just adding two lines of code!

What contributions are you welcoming?
We are welcoming all types of the contributions! We have a project board set up called Community Love there are a lot of good issues that we want help with. They all are tagged in that board and we welcome contribution to anything as small as a typo to anything like new features or bug fixings or even a brand new component.
We also recently released a contest aiming to attract more contributors to our repo. Every month you can enter with a qualified PR to win some super cool Microsoft Graph swags.
The goal of our project is to make it extremely easy for developers to work with Microsoft Graph and that's the reason we started this open source project.
Now that it's been almost a year since we released the toolkit and have gotten plenty of feedback from all of you, we really want to engage with our customers and developers that it's you even further and have you guys help us to build the toolkit that everybody loves! ♥

What skills do people need to contribute?
You will need some basic understanding of web development such as Git, Node.js, Yarn, TypeScript, Web components etc.

But our team is here to help if you are interested in becoming a contributor comment on any of the issues open in GitHub under our repo or send us a message and we would be more than happy to have a one-on-one conversation with you.

How do I get started?
To get started go to our repo column the project at aka.ms/mgt you can build and run the project using Yarn and we have Storybook set up for testing and showing the components as you develop them.
Just go ahead and have fun!

Leading up to (and during) the month of October, we want to help you discover open source projects to work on, and put your Hacktoberfest contributions to excellent use. Meet Trevor Hinkle head of electricityMap open source project.

Check out this page regularly for more interviews with contributors & maintainers

Hi there, I'm Trevor Hinkle and I work on the electricityMap team part of an open source project that shows the climate impact of electricity around the world.

What can you tell us about your project?
electricityMap is an open source visualization and collection of data parsers that shows the carbon footprint of electricity that's being produced and consumed all around the world.
If you go to electricitymap.org the kind of front end of our project, you can see where electricity is being produced and consumed & where is it coming from. For example it's coming from wind, solar gas nuclear etc. And, where is the power flowing around the world and the carbon footprint at any given time.

What contributions are you welcoming?
Over the years electricity map has been built as part of a community and we've had thousands of contributions particularly around getting new data on electricity map so when you are on electricitymap.org you can see that there are some areas which have era are colored in and some which are gray. The areas which are gray are areas where we don't have data yet and so we're always welcoming contributions for people who are interested in hunting down new data sources or particularly looking for hourly data that is updated every hour with a breakdown of where power is coming from in any given region, how power is being produced as well as the cross-border physical flow so if electricity is being imported or exported
to neighboring grids that's an important aspect of what we do.
So, if you're interested we would love for people to help build new parsers and add new data to electricityMap in those gray areas but also if you see an error with an existing area we'd love for your help to integrate a new data source or correct something there.
Also, if you're interested in helping out on the user experience and data presentation side of things we welcome your insights there as well.

What skills do people need to contribute?
To work on the parsers, to help contribute data to electricityMap it will definitely help to have some development skills. Particularly knowledge of Python & data science data engineering. If you go to our repository and you'll be able to see we've given you guides and you can see examples on how to integrate new data sources.
If you don't happen to have these skills then you can also contribute by suggestions and ideas on the user experience presentation side of the project.
Also, if you have knowledge in electricity energy systems then your insights & comments are very welcome.
Finally, you can also contribute by pointing us to the local open data in regions we have lack of data.

How do I get started?
To get started you can just go to our GitHub repository and there
we've written up a guide of how electricityMap works as well as how you can contribute. You can also see the list of issues we are working on. This is the best place to start.

I also recommend looking at electricitymap.org to see how far we've gotten in our mission to map out the world's electricity emissions and see where there is still to go and maybe that might give you some inspiration.

Leading up to (and during) the month of October, we want to help you discover open source projects to work on, and put your Hacktoberfest contributions to excellent use. Meet David Rousset, co-author of BabylonJS & OSS lead of PWA Builder.

Check out this page regularly for more interviews with contributors & maintainers

Hi, my name is David, I work for Microsoft Corp, as Senior Program Manager. I am in charge of Leading PWA Builder Open Source Project. I have been working in Open Source before, BabylonJS which is a WebGL project.

What can you tell us about your project?
PWA Builder is an Open Source Project which helps developers to either start a PWA project from scratch by using the available template on GitHub or guide you steps to convert your existing app into a PWA app. You start by typing the URL of your app in PWA Builder website, we start to analyze it and tell you what is missing in your app to make a good PWA app, for example you miss a Service Worker or Manifest or how you can publish it to application store.
If you check PWA Builder website you can see all the great components you can add to your existing app to make a better PWA app. Feel free to check what we are working on.

What contributions are you welcoming?
Well, like any Open Source project, we are welcoming any kind of contribution.
First, please use the tool & provide feedback. If you find bug, please do bug report.
Second, Documentation! We try our best to create documentation, but sometimes as a team we don't have enough time to put there. If you can write tutorials, or share your knowledge around PWA Builder it will be so useful. We already have people in the community doing that, but of course would be great if you also join them.
Finally, if you can write some specific fractures and help us building them, that would be awesome. We currently have some help in building different web components that I mentioned earlier, but if you have a great idea and want to help us to help other developers building PWA, please join and help us.

What skills do people need to contribute?
Skill set would be pretty wide. You can just check the product by going through the user flow and see what's missing. You could help us write documentation, you don't need to be a code guru writing documentation.
Finally, if you have coding skills, you can help us implementing features. PWA Builder consists of back-end in Node.js and Azure Functions & Front-end in Vue.js & LitElement.
Most of the time we need more web client development skills, so if you have any knowledge in this area, for instance CSS, please come and join us. We would welcome you! 😊

How do I get started?
To get started, we tried to put everything on pwabuilder.com where you also have the link to our GitHub page. On our GitHub page, you can either create bug report or submit your code. This is the main area where we are tracking bugs. We are improving our documentation as we are speaking to make sure we can welcome you to contribute. But if you have any specific question, you can contact me directly on Twitter via @davrous or @pwabuilder. Feel free to reach us on any channel, we will try our best to help you and onboard you if you want to contribute to the project.

Leading up to (and during) the month of October, we want to help you discover open source projects to work on, and put your Hacktoberfest contributions to excellent use. Meet Wassim Chegham, creator and maintainer of xLayers.

Check out this page regularly for more interviews with contributors & maintainers

Hi, I'm Wassim, the creator and maintainer of xLayers. xLayers is a tool that lets you preview and convert your SketchApp designs into any JavaScript framework code or library.

What can you tell us about your project?
xLayers bridges the gap between designers and developers and allowing them to collaborate and iterate over a design. For example, designers would use SketchApp to create their design and xLayers converts that design into actual code in any JavaScript frameworks so developers can use the generated code to build on top of it and add all the business logics.

What contributions are you welcoming?
We're actually looking for any kind of contributions! If you are a designer and want to use the tool please feel free to do so and let us know what you think about that. Also, give us suggestion
about the UI & UX of the tool.
If you are a developer we would love your contributions in improving the code base, adding more unit tests and so on.

What skills do people need to contribute?
Since xLayers is meant to be used by both designers and developers, we need actually contributions from both groups. If
you're a designer and have some design skills we would love to have your help on improving xLayers user experience.
xLayers is written in Angular, so the code base is mainly TypeScript. The CLI configuration is written in JavaScript so we would love to have your contributions on that as well. The unit tests are written in Jest and the end-to-end tests
are written in Cypress so if you know these tools that would be really great otherwise there is no obligation feel free to come as you are!

How do I get started?
In order to get started you could go over to xlayers.dev which is the the main website for the tool or you could go directly to the GitHub project and there are a bunch of issues labeled with good for first issue and community help. Feel free to pick any one of those if you if you want to start contributing.
Otherwise you could just simply use the tool, give us feedback and let us know what is missing or if you find a bug by creating feature request or bug repost.
Thank you in advance! 🙏

Join, October 2nd, for CONTRIBUTING.md - a virtual Hacktoberfest meetup, free and open for anyone who wants to join.
