I like to sometimes let the web page tell me where it wants to go in terms of responsiveness...

Haha well, in 2022, that approach might lead you to some hectic places on the front end. I truly didn't find any joy in making a component responsive ad nauseam and was struggling to find a design library that didn't feel bulky or claustrophobic.

Lucky for me, that helper turned out to be Chakra-UI.

Chakra-UI is just enough to bring the baseline UI up to a higher standard, but the extensive customizability leaves you feeling still very much in control. After redesigning two UIs from this library, I am sold and will preferentially use it for my front end projects going forward. Some features that really stood out:

The built-in breakpoints saved me on total-app responsiveness and are adaptable enough to meet today's diverse screen requirements.
You can combine features like the breakpoints with their custom hooks such as the useMediaQuery hook, which I used to easily switch views I had designed for mobile or desktop.
The dark/light mode works really nicely and it was super easy to implement, as you can see on my personal website here.
The text styles are intuitive, fun, and attractive. I created my "newspaper headlines" design here just from variations on their Heading feature. I also replaced the Wix pro gallery with their Grid component and found it more responsive overall.

All-in-all I would highly recommend integrating Chakra-UI into your next project for a satisfying User Experience and modern look!

This is my first official post on this platform and I'm very excited to try it out ;) Having started my software development journey 18 months ago, I've been looking for an outlet to both reignite my love for writing while improving my fresher set of coding skills through shared learning. *So expect some more interesting {& random} content in 2022 through this corner of the metaverse... *

For this first article I wanted to address a hot topic: landing a 'legit' software apprenticeship in the US in 2022. Why highlight non-full contract apprenticeships? And why are you reminding me of the perils of the pandemic job market right after New Years? Well, my twisted motivations are multi-dimensional. To put it simply, I want to save you some pain by offering a little information. When I left my full-time coding bootcamp in May 2021 after switching careers, surviving COVID-19, and moving back to the US from Europe, I was truly imitating a fish out of water. I hadn't been registered on any major jobs sites in the US for almost five years and I was out of shape from writing cover letters, crafting a unique CV, and generally bewildered by the daunting task ahead of me.

The narrative I've noticed so far on how to "break into" the tech industry focuses on how to survive grueling rounds of technical interviews and team-based assessments to land a permanent contract and take off like a stealth rocket ship. People do this all the time and I applaud them for it. However, for some of us, going from theory to direct practice might involve a few more steps in between to feel comfortable calling ourselves "coders." Fortunately, the tech sector has realized the collective awkwardness of this moment that many new developers may face, and hence the colloquial "apprenticeship" is thriving. While apprenticeships and internships are similar, apprenticeships generally imply a higher potential for being hired into a permanent contract afterwards.

I've compiled an essential but by no means comprehensive list of worthwhile apprenticeships currently offered and expected to be offered in 2022. This is the list I would have wanted to be handed to me at the beginning of last summer and a few of these I have already applied to myself in the opening of the new season. The reputation of some of these company's programs continues to grow and so does their competitiveness. I'd treat applications to these programs as I would to any standard entry level job knowing that the point is to foster your success as a developer and to mutually "level-up" going forward.
