Building a Multi-User AI Agent System: Architecture Deep-Dive (Open Source)

If you're building AI agents for production, you've probably hit these walls:

Isolation: How do you run multiple users' agents without them interfering?
Persistence: How do you maintain memory across sessions?
Multi-channel: How do you connect to WhatsApp AND Telegram AND Slack without building three integrations?
Cost control: How do you prevent one user from burning through your entire API budget?

I've been working on HappyClaw, an open-source system that solves all four. Here's how the architecture works under the hood.

The Core Idea: Don't Reimplement, Wrap

Most AI agent frameworks try to build their own agent loop from scratch. HappyClaw takes a different approach: it wraps Anthropic's Claude Code CLI (the same tool behind Claude Code) as a service.

Why? Because Claude Code already handles:

Tool execution and permission management
Multi-turn conversation with memory
File operations, terminal access, browser automation
The MCP (Model Context Protocol) tool ecosystem

HappyClaw adds the multi-user, multi-channel layer on top.

Key Design Decisions

1. Container Isolation

Each user gets their own Docker container with:

Persistent filesystem (workspace survives restarts)
Isolated process space
Memory system with date-based persistence
Up to 20 concurrent containers + 5 host processes

The container image comes with ~40 preinstalled tools (git, python, node, curl, etc.) so agents can actually execute code.

2. The Skill System

Skills are defined as SKILL.md files with YAML frontmatter:

When a potential customer reaches out, follow this workflow:
1. Greet warmly and ask what they're looking for
2. Ask about budget range
3. Ask about timeline
4. Score the lead (0-1) based on...

Skills are loaded into the agent's context automatically. No code needed — just markdown instructions that the AI follows.

3. Built-in Billing

The billing system tracks per-model token usage (input/output/cache) with:

Subscription plans with token quotas
User wallets and redemption codes
Complete audit logging

This means you can offer HappyClaw as a service to YOUR customers without building a billing system from scratch.

4. Multi-Provider Failover

Primary: Claude Opus 4.6
Failover: GLM (or any OpenAI-compatible API)

Load balanced across providers with automatic failover. Your users never see a downtime.
