Why Do People Find a Pen Pal and Then Never Send the First Letter?

I’m building SlowInk, a pen-pal app built around digital letters.

And recently, I’ve been thinking about a strange problem.

Someone signs up.

They complete their profile.

They find a person they seem interested in talking to.

And then…

nothing happens.

No first letter.

At first, I thought the solution was probably obvious.

Give users a better onboarding flow.

Show them how to write a letter.

Give them a reward for sending one.

Make matching easier.

But the more I looked at the behavior, the less certain I became.

Maybe the problem isn't that people don't know how to send a letter.

Maybe they don't know whether they should.

The blank message problem

Instant messaging has trained us to think differently about starting conversations.

You match with someone.

You can say:

Hey 👋

That's enough.

The conversation can figure itself out later.

A letter feels different.

A letter feels like something you are actually sending to another person.

You have to decide what to say.

You wonder whether the other person will reply.

And because it takes more effort, the empty writing box suddenly feels much bigger.

That's an interesting problem for a product designed around letters.

So what happens after someone finds a pen pal?

This is what I'm currently trying to understand with SlowInk.

The journey looks simple:

Sign up → discover someone → send a letter → receive a reply → continue writing

But each arrow hides a different question.

Why did they sign up?

Why did they choose this person?

Why didn't they send the first letter?

If they did send it, did they receive a reply?

If they received a reply, did they write again?

A match by itself doesn't mean a relationship has started.

And a sent letter doesn't necessarily mean a conversation will continue.

That's where I think the interesting part of pen-pal products begins.

Maybe the goal isn't to make people communicate faster

Most social products are very good at removing friction.

Tap.

Match.

Message.

Reply.

Repeat.

SlowInk is intentionally different.

A letter is supposed to take a little more time.

You don't have to be online at the same moment.

You don't have to reply immediately.

You can think about what you want to say.

But there is a strange balance here.

Too much friction, and people never start.

Too little meaning, and the experience becomes just another chat app.

I'm trying to find the point between those two.

And then there is another kind of letter

SlowInk isn't only about writing to other people.

You can also write a letter to your future self.

You choose when it should be opened and seal it as a time capsule.

You might write about your life today.

Something you hope will happen.

Something you are afraid you'll forget.

Or simply a message to the person you'll become.

Then you wait.

Eventually, that letter comes back.

You're reading something written by yourself, but not by the person you are anymore.

In a strange way, that's another kind of pen pal.

You, writing to you, across time.

I'm still figuring out the first-letter problem

Right now, I'm experimenting with onboarding, prompts, rewards and the overall experience around the first letter.

But I don't want to assume I already know the answer.

Maybe the problem is the blank page.

Maybe it's uncertainty about the other person.

Maybe people simply aren't ready to make the effort.

Or maybe the whole idea of writing a letter to a stranger feels unfamiliar in a world built around instant messages.

That's what I'm trying to learn.

Why Is the First Letter So Hard to Send?

We’ve been thinking about a problem with SlowInk, and honestly, we’re not sure we have the answer yet.

Some people join because they want a pen pal.

They explore the app, maybe write an open letter, maybe even find someone they’d like to talk to.

And then… they stop.

Some don’t claim the welcome reward.
Some find a match but never send a letter.
Some write something, but never press “Send.”

It made us wonder:

Is writing the first letter actually harder than finding someone to write to?

Slowly has talked about a similar challenge before. When they noticed that some users were interested in finding pen pals but struggled to get started with their first letter, they introduced tools such as writing prompts and other shortcuts to make that first step easier.

That makes sense for Slowly.

But SlowInk is trying to build something slightly different.

We don’t want to turn letter writing into another form of instant messaging. And we don’t want AI to write the letter for you.

We’re wondering if the answer might be something much smaller:

A question to start with.

A little inspiration when the blank page feels intimidating.

A reminder that your first letter doesn’t have to be perfect.

But we’re not sure.

Maybe prompts make writing easier.

Maybe they make it feel less personal.

Maybe the real problem isn’t knowing what to write at all. Maybe it’s simply that people aren’t sure whether the stranger on the other side will actually reply.

Why I built an app against fast swipe‑based social media: introducing SlowInk

Nowadays most social and pen‑pal apps are built around speed. Swipe left, swipe right, quick short messages, endless notifications. Platforms reward fast replies and surface‑level first impressions.

We can chat with dozens of people every day, yet many of us still feel lonely. Connections are easy to start, but rarely grow deep. Even some existing pen‑pal apps gradually move toward swipe‑driven matching, focusing heavily on profile pictures instead of real thoughts.

I wanted something different. What if we slow everything down? What if friendship starts from long, thoughtful letters rather than instant small‑talk? That is the original idea behind SlowInk.

I am a solo indie developer building this application with Flutter. My goal was not to make another popular social product. I just wanted to solve a pain I felt myself: missing genuine, low‑pressure cross‑cultural communication.

During development, I made several intentional product trade‑offs:

No swipe matching mechanism. You will not judge people within one second by just looking at avatars.
No real‑time instant chat. Communication happens through complete letters. You take your time writing, and others take their time replying.
Reduce noisy notifications. There is no pressure to reply immediately.
Focus on long‑form writing, for language exchange and sincere pen‑pal friendship.

These choices brought technical challenges. Building a letter‑first social system is quite different from building typical instant‑messaging software. I spent a lot of time thinking about user privacy, spam prevention, and how to keep the atmosphere gentle for global users. Many features got cut in order to keep the core idea intact.

SlowInk is still an early‑stage project. It is far from perfect. There are bugs to fix and features to polish. As a side‑project developer without large‑team support, every improvement moves forward little by little.
