Stimuli-responsive materials are able to undergo controllable changes in materials properties in response to external cues. Increasing efforts have been directed towards building materials that mimic the responsive nature of biological systems. Nevertheless, limitations remain surrounding the way these synthetic materials interact and respond to their environment. In particular, it is difficult to synthesize synthetic materials that respond with specificity to poorly differentiated (bio)chemical and weak physical stimuli. The emerging area of engineered living materials (ELMs) includes composites that combine living cells and synthetic materials. ELMs have yielded promising advances in the creation of stimuli-responsive materials that respond with diverse outputs in response to a broad array of biochemical and physical stimuli. This review describes advances made in the genetic engineering of the living component and the processing-property relationships of stimuli-responsive ELMs. Finally, the implementation of stimuli-responsive ELMs as environmental sensors, biomedical sensors, drug delivery vehicles, and soft robots is discussed.Single-cell electrochemical sensor is widely used in the local selective detection of single living cells because of its high spatial-temporal resolution and sensitivity, as well as its ability to obtain comprehensive cellular physiological states and processes with increased accuracy. Functionalized nanoprobes can detect the oxidative stress response of cells in single-cell electrochemical sensors. Moreover, the T-2 toxin is one of the most toxic mycotoxins and widely occurs in field crops. T-2 toxin can cause mitochondrial damage in cells and increase intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in various cells. As the most representative free radical of intracellular ROS, H2O2 can effectively reflect the toxic effects of intracellular T-2 toxin. WAY262611 In this study, a functionalized gold nanoprobe was used to dynamically monitor the production of H2O2 in a single live human hepatoma cell HepG2 stimulated by mycotoxin T-2. The concentration of H2O2 produced by HepG2 cells stimulated by T-2 toxin at 1 ppb-1 ppm was linearly correlated, R2 = 0.99055, and LOD = 0.13807 ng mL-1. Sample spiking experiments were conducted, and the recovery rate of spiking was 81.19%-130.17%. A comparative analysis of differences in the current produced by multiple toxins, HT-29 cells, as well as single cells in cell populations, was performed. This method can be applied in real-time monitoring of mycotoxin toxicity during food processing in living cells and provides a novel idea for enhancing food quality and safety in a nanoenvironment. The Kamlet-Taft dipolarity/polarizability parameters π* for various ionic liquids were determined using 4-tert-butyl-2-((dicyanomethylene)-5-[4-N,N-diethylamino)-benzylidene]-Δ3-thiazoline and 5-(N,N-dimethylamino)-5'-nitro-2,2'-bithiophene as solvatochromic probes. In contrast to the established π-probe N,N-diethylnitroaniline, the chromophores presented here show excellent agreement with polarity measurement using the chemical shift of 129Xe. They do not suffer from additional bathochromic UV/vis shifts caused by hydrogen-bonding resulting in too high π-values for some ionic liquids. In combination with large sets of various ionic liquids, these new chromophores thereby allow for detailed analysis of the physical significance of π* and the comparison to quantum-mechanical methods. We find that π* correlates strongly with the ratio of molar refractivity to molar volume, and thus with the refractive index. In this study, we report on hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) as representative models for nanographenes. To this end, we synthesized a family of functionalized HBCs and investigated the impact of the substituents on the π-extended systems of the HBCs. DFT and TD-DFT calculations suggested a charge transfer character, which intensified as the electron density withdrawing effects of the substituents (-M-effect) increased. Unambiguous corroboration of the charge transfer character in the case of NO2-substituents was realized via steady-state absorption and fluorescence experiments, which focused on the dependencies on the solvent polarity and temperature featuring. Going beyond HBCs with NO2-substituents, time-correlated single photon counting, and femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy unveiled long-lived singlet and triplet excited states. As a complement, we performed electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical measurements. These measurements were carried out to shed light onto the nature of the functionalized HBCs as electron acceptors and/or donors, on the one hand, and their corresponding spectroscopic signatures, on the other hand. All of the aforementioned information enabled intermolecular charge separation assays with, for example, suitable electron acceptors by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy.Solvents with a wide range of polarities, including poly(dimethylsiloxane) and oligo(dimethylsiloxane), were used to evaluate aromatic donor-acceptor interactions between pyrene and pyromellitic diimide derivatives. The donor-acceptor interactions were stronger in siloxane solvents than in aliphatic solvents, possibly because of the poor solubility of the aromatics in siloxanes.Selective turn-on luminescence properties are shown by a non-luminescent metalloreceptor upon the addition of phosphate anions in CH3CN and hydrazine in CH3CN/H2O (6/4, v/v). The non-luminescent metalloreceptors [RuII(phen)2(TpH)]2PF6- (RtpH) and [RuII(Phen)2(TpI)]2PF6- (RtpI) phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; TpH = 2-(2-(4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)ethyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione; and TpI = 2-(2-(5-iodo-4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)ethyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione were synthesized and characterized. Both metalloreceptors have excellent sensing properties for phosphate anions (H2PO4- and H2P2O72-) over other anions in CH3CN. The limit of detection (LOD) values were calculated to be 79 nM and 48 nM for H2PO4- upon addition to RtpH and RtpI, respectively. Noncovalent interactions play a key role in the sensing of phosphate anions, among which the halogen-anion interaction showed superior recognition properties over the hydrogen-anion interaction. Comparative electrochemical experiments, 1H NMR titration, 31P NMR titration, and lifetime studies also show that RtpI has better sensing properties, as evidenced by its more drastic emission response to H2PO4- anions compared with RtpH.WAY262611

However, reasons why IgA has not been introduced in the clinic yet can be found in the intrinsic properties of IgA posing several technical limitations (1) IgA is challenging to produce and purify, (2) IgA shows a very heterogeneous glycosylation profile, and (3) IgA has a relatively short serum half-life. Next to the technical challenges, pre-clinical evaluation of IgA efficacy in vivo is not straightforward as mice do not naturally express the FcαR. Here, we provide a concise overview of the latest insights in these engineering strategies overcoming technical limitations of IgA as a therapeutic antibody developability, heterogeneity, and short half-life. In addition, alternative approaches using IgA/IgG hybrid and FcαR-engagers and the impact of engineering on the clinical application of IgA will be discussed.
This study evaluates the main (para)clinical aspects and outcomes in a group of Romanian children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), under the conditions of antileukemic treatment according to an adapted ALL IC Berlin-Frankfurt-Munster (BFM) 2002 protocol.

We performed a retrospective single-center study of 125 children diagnosed with ALL between 2010 and 2016. Standard forms were used for data collection of variate clinical and paraclinical parameters.

The children were predominantly male (64.8%) and their median age at diagnosis was 5 years. A total of 107 patients were diagnosed with precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP)-ALL and 18 with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia T-ALL. Multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction RT-PCR assay for ETV6-RUNX1, BCR-ABL, E2A-PBX1, KMT2A-AFF1, and STIL-TAL1 fusion genes was performed in 111 patients. ETV6-RUNX1 translocation was detected in 18.9% of patients, while BCR-ABL1 and E2A-PBX1 rearrangements were seen in 2.7% and 3.6%, respectively. Complete remission at the end of induction phase was obtained in 89.6% of patients. The overall relapse rate was 11.2%, with 11 early and 3 late relapses. The 5-year overall survival rate in BCP-ALL was 81.6% and in T-ALL 71.4%.

The 5-year overall and event-free survival rates in our study were slightly lower than those reported in developed countries, so the patients' outcomes are encouraging.
Understanding the determinants of the first- and last-mile mode choice is essential. Existing literature, however, mostly overlooks the mode choice effects of traffic safety perception and attitudes toward the mode. To this end, based on a face-to-face questionnaire survey in Shenzhen, China, this study uses the two-sample t-test to confirm the systematic differences in traffic safety perception and attitudes between different subgroups and develops a series of multinomial logistic (MNL) models to identify the determinants of first- and last-mile mode choice for metro commuters. The results of this study show that (1) Walking is the most frequently used travel mode, followed by dockless bike-sharing (DBS) and buses; (2) Variances in traffic safety perception and attitude exist across gender and location; (3) Vehicle-related crash risks discourage metro commuters from walking to/from the metro station but encourage them to use DBS and buses as feeder modes; (4) DBS-metro integration is encouraged by the attitude that DBS is quicker than buses and walking, and positive attitudes toward the bus and DBS availability are decisive for the bus-metro and DBS-metro integration, respectively; and (5) Substantial differences exist in the mode choice effects of traffic safety perception and attitudes for access and egress trips. This study provides a valuable reference for metro commuters' first- and last-mile travel mode choice, contributing to developing a sustainable urban transport system.Single-atom catalysts (SACs), as atomically dispersed metal active sites anchored or coordinated on suitable supports, demonstrate large potential for use in therapeutic applications. SACs have structural features similar to those of natural enzyme, while exhibiting remarkable catalytic activity, desirable stability, and excellent selectivity. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence on SACs' biotherapy applications. Three databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, ISI Web of Science, and ScienceDirect) were searched to identify the studies that investigated the therapeutic efficacy of SACs. A total of 12 studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included and reviewed, and the key findings were qualitatively synthesized. CHIR99021 Overall, various SACs were investigated for biotherapy applications, including anticancer, anti-infection (antibacterial), and anti-inflammatory applications; brain trauma therapies, and oxidative-stress cytoprotection applications. All of the included studies showed that the synthesized SACs demonstrated superior therapeutic effects compared with their respective controls. Among the 12 studies reviewed, 11 studies showed satisfied biocompatibility of the applied SACs, whereas minimal cytotoxicity was reported in 1 study. Collectively, the reviewed studies indicated that SACs exhibited considerable promise in the field of biotherapy. Additional studies are needed for a better understanding of the effect of SACs in the treatment of various diseases. In order to solve the problems of heavy computational load and poor real time of the information fusion method based on the federated Kalman filter (FKF), a novel information fusion method based on the complementary filter is proposed for strapdown inertial navigation (SINS)/celestial navigation system (CNS)/global positioning system (GPS) integrated navigation system of an aerospace plane. The complementary filters are designed to achieve the estimations of attitude, velocity, and position in the SINS/CNS/GPS integrated navigation system, respectively. The simulation results show that the proposed information fusion method can effectively realize SINS/CNS/GPS information fusion. Compared with FKF, the method based on complementary filter (CF) has the advantages of simplicity, small calculation, good real-time performance, good stability, no need for initial alignment, fast convergence, etc. Furthermore, the computational efficiency of CF is increased by 94.81%. Finally, the superiority of the proposed CF-based method is verified by both the semi-physical simulation and real-time system experiment.CHIR99021

We further found that the expression of Gzma and Klrg1 was significantly increased and Fcgr4 was significantly decreased when inhibiting Cyp26a1. Our experimental results show that there is a novel NK cell subset of Cyp26a1+ NK cells in mouse uterus and Cyp26a1 can regulate the gene expression of Gzma, Klrg1 and Fcgr4 in the Cyp26a1+ NK cells.
Co-morbidities are associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with chronic heart failure, while cardiac iodine-123 (I-123) metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging provides prognostic information in such patients. We sought to prospectively investigate the incremental prognostic value of cardiac MIBG imaging over the co-morbid burden, in patients admitted for acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF).

In 433 consecutive ADHF patients with survival to discharge, we measured the co-morbidity using age-adjusted Charlson co-morbidity index (ACCI), commonly employed to evaluate a weighted and scored co-morbid condition, adding additional points for age. In cardiac MIBG imaging, the cardiac MIBG heart-to-mediastinum ratio (late HMR) was measured on the delayed image. Over a follow-up period of 2.9±1.5years, 160 patients had a cardiac event (a composite of cardiac death and unplanned hospitalization for worsening heart failure). Patients with high ACCI (≥6 median value) had a significantly greater risk of a cardiac event. In multivariate Cox analysis, the ACCI and late HMR were significantly and independently associated with a cardiac event. In both high and low ACCI subgroups (ACCI≥6 and <6, respectively), patients with low late HMR had a significantly greater risk of a cardiac event (high ACCI 51% vs. 34% P=0.0026, adjusted HR 1.74 [1.21-2.51]; low ACCI 34% vs. 17%, P=0.0228, adjusted HR 2.19 [1.10-4.37]).

Cardiac MIBG imaging could provide additional prognostic information over ACCI, which was also promoted to be a useful risk model, in patients admitted for ADHF.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of different agents, dosages and strategies of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) by network meta-analysis.

Electronic database searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up to 1 December 2019 to `identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The standardized mean difference (SMD), odds ratios (OR), 95% confidence intervals (CI), the surface under the cumulative ranking curves and the mean ranks of each outcome were estimated by Stata 14.0.

Forty-seven RCTs encompassing 17872 nAMD patients randomly assigned to 36 regimens of anti-VEGF agents or sham treatment were included. T&E strategy shows top-level effect both in BCVA changes and the percentage of patients with a gain of 3 lines or more of BCVA. When taking the same strategy, there is no significant difference of efficacy among ranibizumab, bevacizumab and aflibercept (p>0.05); The combination of radiation, topical NSAIDs and photodynamic therapy (PDT) might provide additional benefit in central retinal thickness (CRT) reduction; all these therapeutic regimens of different anti-VEGF agents do not significantly increase the risk of severe ocular or cardiocerebral vascular adverse events (ADEs) compared with sham treatment (p>0.05).

T&E strategy showed a satisfactory effect in visual improvement and there is no significant difference in efficacy or safety among ranibizumab, bevacizumab and aflibercept. All the included regimens have an acceptable risk of ADEs.
T&E strategy showed a satisfactory effect in visual improvement and there is no significant difference in efficacy or safety among ranibizumab, bevacizumab and aflibercept. All the included regimens have an acceptable risk of ADEs.The prevalence of diabetes is rapidly increasing, and it is now the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Although early detection of diabetic retinopathy is key to preventing vision loss, many patients do not receive appropriate examinations. Using a multidisciplinary approach, primary care physicians and eye care providers should follow evidence-based recommendations for screening and monitoring diabetic patients while working to improve patients' glycaemic index, blood pressure, and metabolic risk factors. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor intravitreal injections in combination with panretinal photocoagulation and focal laser treatment remain the cornerstones of modern therapy. The many landmark studies for diabetic eye disease management should guide counselling and decision making for treating diabetic macular oedema, proliferative retinopathy and other diabetes-related eye diseases.Wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD), characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss among elderly people in developed nations. Subretinal fibrosis, mediated by epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells, leads to unsuccessful anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agent treatments in CNV patients. Under hypoxic conditions, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) increases the stability and activation of p53, which activates microRNA-34a (miRNA-34a) transcription to promote fibrosis. Additionally, Klotho is a target gene of miRNA-34a that inhibits fibrosis. This study aimed to explore the role of the HIF-1α/p53/miRNA-34a/Klotho axis in subretinal fibrosis and CNV. Hypoxia-induced HIF-1α promoted p53 stability, phosphorylation and nuclear translocation in ARPE-19 cells (a human RPE cell line). HIF-1α-dependent p53 activation up-regulated miRNA-34a expression in ARPE-19 cells following hypoxia. Moreover, hypoxia-induced p53-dependent miRNA-34a inhibited the expression of Klotho in ARPE-19 cells. Additionally, the HIF-1α/p53/miRNA-34a/Klotho axis facilitated hypoxia-induced EMT in ARPE-19 cells. In vivo, blockade of the HIF-1α/p53/miRNA-34a/Klotho axis alleviated the formation of mouse laser-induced CNV and subretinal fibrosis. Selleckchem β-Glycerophosphate In short, the HIF-1α/p53/miRNA-34a/Klotho axis in RPE cells promoted subretinal fibrosis, thus aggravating the formation of CNV.Selleckchem β-Glycerophosphate

The livers ability to regulate its metabolic activity may have profound effects on the efficiency of whole body energy utilization during CG. SIGNIFICANCE This study is the first to unravel the effect of compensatory growth on the hepatic proteome of cattle using transcriptome-assisted shot gun proteomics. Proteins identified as being affected by dietary restriction and subsequent expression of compensatory growth in this study may, following appropriate validation, contribute to the identification of functional genetic variants. Such information could be harnessed within the context of genomic selection in cattle breeding programs to identify animals with a greater genetic potential to undergo compensatory growth, thus increasing the profitability of the beef sector and accelerating genetic gain. The narrow host range entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium acridum, is an environmentally friendly acridid specific pathogen used for locust control. The locust is capable of responding within hours of infection, however, little is known concerning how the locust detects the pathogen. Here, we have identified 3213 proteins in the infected antennal proteome of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria. iTRAQ comparative analyses of antennal proteomes identified 194 differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) between uninfected and infected males, 218 DAPs between uninfected and infected females, and 240 DAPs between infected males and infected females. In relation to olfaction, a total of 29 chemosensory proteins (CSPs), 9 odorant binding proteins (OBPs), 31 odorant receptors (ORs), and 8 ionotropic receptors (IRs) were differentially abundant after M. acridum infection, with a subset of 12 proteins found in both infected male and female antennae not present in uninfected individuals. The time course of the gene exhe host to the infection challenge.Large parts of the Sahara Desert and Arabia are covered by sand seas and sand dunes, which are inhabited by specialized animal communities. For example, many lizards have developed adaptations to life in loose sand, including sand-swimming behavior. The best-known sand swimmers of the Saharo-Arabia are the sandfish skinks (genus Scincus). Although there are currently only four Scincus species recognized, their phylogenetic relationships have not yet been addressed in detail. We use eight genetic markers (three mitochondrial, five nuclear) and a complete sampling of species to infer the relationships within the genus. We employ multiple phylogenetic approaches to reconstruct the evolutionary history of these skinks and to assess the level of reticulation at the onset of their radiation. Our results indicate the presence of five strongly supported species-level lineages, four represented by the currently recognized species and the fifth by S. scincus conirostris, which does not form a clade with S. scincus. Basogy despite being sand swimmers that are typically limbless. The sponge class Demospongiae is the most speciose and morphologically diverse in the phylum Porifera, and the species within it are vital components of a range of ecosystems worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, a number of recalcitrant problems still remain to be solved regarding their phylogenetic inter-relationships, the timing of their appearance, and their mitochondrial biology, the latter of which is only beginning to be investigated. Here we generated 14 new demosponge mitochondrial genomes which, alongside previously published mitochondrial resources, were used to address these issues. In addition to phylogenomic analysis, we have used syntenic data and analysis of coding regions to forge a framework for understanding the inter-relationships between Demospongiae sub-classes and orders. We have also leveraged our new resources to study the mitochondrial biology of these clades in terms of codon usage, optimisation and gene expression, to understand how these vital cellular components may have contributed to the success of the Porifera. Our results strongly support a sister relationship between Keratosa and (Verongimorpha + Heteroscleromorpha), contradicting previous studies using nuclear markers. Our study includes one species of Clionaida, and show for the first time support for a grouping of Suberitida+(Clionaida+(Tethyida + Poecilosclerida). The findings of our phylogenetic analyses are supported by in-depth examination of structural and coding-level evidence from our mitochondrial data. A time-calibrated phylogeny estimated the origin of Demospongiae in the Cambrian (~529 Mya), and suggests that most demosponge order crown-groups emerged in the Mesozoic. This work therefore provides a robust basis for considering demosponge phylogenetic relationships, as well as essential mitochondrial data for understanding the biological basis for their success and diversity.Target capture sequencing effectively generates molecular marker arrays useful for molecular systematics. These extensive data sets are advantageous where previous studies using a few loci have failed to resolve relationships confidently. Moreover, target capture is well-suited to fragmented source DNA, allowing data collection from species that lack fresh tissues. Herein we use target capture to generate data for a phylogeny of the avian family Pipridae (manakins), a group that has been the subject of many behavioral and ecological studies. Most manakin species feature lek mating systems, where males exhibit complex behavioral displays including mechanical and vocal sounds, coordinated movements of multiple males, and high speed movements. We analyzed thousands of ultraconserved element (UCE) loci along with a smaller number of coding exons and their flanking regions from all but one species of Pipridae. We examined three different methods of phylogenetic estimation (concatenation and two multispecies coalesr analyses resulted in a robust phylogenetic hypothesis of the family Pipridae that provides a comparative framework for future ecomorphological and behavioral studies.A coiled shell is the most evident feature of the typical Bauplan of a gastropod mollusc. However, at least 54 families independently evolved an apparently simplified shell morphology the limpet. selleck products Species with this largely uncoiled, depressed shell morphology occur in almost every aquatic habitat and are associated to a number of different lifestyles and diets. The marine gastropod family Capulidae includes 18 recognised genera, the large majority of which are coiled, but with a number of limpet-like species. Capulid shell plasticity is also associated to a broad range of feeding ecologies, from obligate suspension feeders to kleptoparasites. To investigate the evolution of the limpet-like shell in the family Capulidae we performed an ancestral state reconstruction analysis on a time-calibrated phylogenetic tree (COI, 16S, and ITS2) including 16 species representing a good deal of its morphological diversity. Our results identified at least three capulid lineages that independently evolved limpet-like shells, suggesting that a recurrent limpetization process characterizes this family.selleck products

These results challenge the view that emotion modulates visual working memory quality and quantity. HDAC inhibitor (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).Intimate partner aggression (IPA) is a significant public health burden, and thus efforts to identify individual characteristics that predict perpetration of IPA is an important research question. Personality disorders are a significant correlate of IPA, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Much of that work, however, had been conducted in younger samples. IPA in older adults is a relatively understudied area of research generally. Thus, examining the association between personality pathology and IPA in older adults is novel and important. In previous work using the St. Louis Personality and Aging Network sample, we found that borderline personality disorder was a robust correlate of perpetrating partner aggression in older, romantically involved participants. In the current analyses, we attempted to replicate our original findings in the same sample assessed 2.5 years later. We also extended the original work by using both self- and partner-reported IPA and by using latent factors of personality pathology. We found that prevalence of IPA in this sample was similar to the baseline assessment; 69.1% reported IPA in the past year, with the vast majority being psychological/verbal rather than physical aggression. Agreement between partners on perpetration was modest. Borderline personality pathology was again the strongest and most consistent predictor of IPA. Our findings speak to the continuing public health burden of borderline personality pathology into older age as evidenced by associations with perpetration of IPA. Subtype identification and characterization of NPD is central, in particular, to increase diagnostic precision, linking categorical and dimensional conceptualizations of psychopathology, and to individualize treatments. A total of N = 161 patients diagnosed with NPD undergoing clarification-oriented psychotherapy were included in the present reanalysis of a naturalistic pre-post process-outcome study. At three crucial time-points of the therapy (Sessions 15, 20, and 25), the patient's in-session quality of content, process, and relationship are assessed using intensive video- and audio analyses. Levels of psychopathology were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed using longitudinal nonparametric analysis. Based on in-session processes across three time-points, a two-subtype solution was retained (optimal vs. suboptimal process qualities). Optimal process quality of time was linked with the intensity of narcissistic symptoms; suboptimal process quality was linked with a variety of general symptom loads and problematic personality traits. The two empirical subtypes were predicted by the quality of real-life functioning with an accuracy of more than 92% and were partially associated with outcome. NPD may be empirically differentiated between patients engaging in optimal psychotherapy process versus those who engage in suboptimal psychotherapy process. This differentiation has reliable clinical predictors at the outset of treatment. The present study has implications in terms of personalizing psychotherapy for patients presenting NPD, or pathological narcissism. Sexual aggression remains a significant public health problem, with the majority of sexual assaults involving alcohol. Founded upon an experimental medicine approach to behavior change, the current study used a proximal change experiment to target and test emotion regulation (ER) as a mechanism underlying alcohol-involved sexual aggression.

Heavy episodic drinking men aged 21-30 with a sexual assault perpetration history (N = 209) were randomly assigned to a brief, online, ER-focused cognitive restructuring or mindfulness intervention or to control. Intervention effects were evaluated during sober and intoxicated states through laboratory-based alcohol administration (target BrAC = .08%). Intoxicated and sober participants completed a proximal change protocol that included implementing ER skills during a sexual aggression analogue that assessed relevant emotions and intentions.

Path analysis demonstrated that relative to control, the cognitive restructuring intervention improved emotional modulation andns improved proximal ER skills associated with reduced sexual aggression intentions, signifying ER as an important mechanism for changing sexually aggressive behavior. Because intervention efficacy varied by intoxication state, further research is needed to assess the effectiveness of ER interventions targeting real-world alcohol-involved sexual aggression. To analyze the independent associations of depression and diabetes distress with self-management and glycemic outcome in Type I (T1DM) and Type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

Six hundred six people with T1DM or T2DM participated in a cross-sectional survey including measures of depression (PHQ-9), diabetes distress (PAID-5), self-management behavior (DSMQ), and glycemic outcome (HbA1c). Structural equation modeling was performed to analyze the independent linear associations (standardized coefficients) between these variables.

In those with T1DM (n = 339), both depressive symptoms and diabetes distress were associated with lower self-management (-0.34, p < .001, and -0.16, p = .007, respectively) and thereover (indirectly) with higher HbA1c (0.20, p < .001, and 0.10, p = .016, respectively); direct associations with HbA1c were not observed. In those with T2DM (n = 267), only depressive symptoms were associated with lower self-management (-0.41, p < .001) and thus (indirectly) with higher HbA1c (0.17, p &lts diabetes types. Diabetes distress was additionally associated with higher glycemic levels, suggesting that people with both depression and diabetes distress might have the least optimal outcome. The conclusions are limited by the cross-sectional study design, self-report assessment of behavior, and potential bias arising from questionnaire measures. Further research is needed to support these findings.

A composite photocatalyst combined with TiO2, graphite (G) and Fe3O4 was prepared by co-precipitation method. Then the G-TiO2@Fe3O4 was employed with persulfate (PS) to degrade alizarin red S (ARS) under visible light. The removal rate of ARS reached 100% after 60 min irradiation. The degradation rate constant of G-TiO2@Fe3O4/PS exhibited 20.8, 9.0 and 3.1 times than that of TiO2, G-TiO2 and G-TiO2@Fe3O4, respectively. The effects of photocatalyst dosage, mass ratios of graphite and Fe3O4 to TiO2, PS dosage, initial pH and ARS concentration on the degradation efficiency were investigated. The optimal removal efficiency of ARS was obtained when G-TiO2@Fe3O4 dosage was 0.25 g/L, G TiO2 = 0.005, Fe3O4 TiO2 = 0.8, PS concentration was 6 mmol/L, initial pH = 3, and initial concentration of ARS was 100 mg/L. The SO4·- was demonstrated more important than O2- and·OH in the degradation of ARS. The intermediates and possible degradation pathways of ARS were discussed. Reuse and stability of G-TiO2@Fe3O4 were also tested, and 88.3% photocatalytic activity was maintained after five cycles. Therefore, the proposed G-TiO2@Fe3O4/PS not only had excellent photocatalytic activity, but also showed superior stability and reusability. As phosphorus (P) losses from Midwestern crop fields degrade water quality in downstream water bodies, the assessment of natural P immobilization in floodplain soils is imperative to reduce P input to the Gulf of Mexico. While the organic CP ratio of soil is widely accepted as an important indicator of P immobilization, roles of the quality/type of C sources (i.e., foliar C composition and degradability) on soil P dynamics are not clearly understood. The objective of this laboratory incubation study was to assess the influence of leaf residue of native trees (e.g., hackberry, and silver maple) on P reaction dynamics in floodplain soils as a function of C composition (i.e., carbonyl-, alkyl- and aromatic-C) and soil organic CP ratios. Conventional wet chemical analyses and 31P NMR spectroscopy were used to understand changes in P speciation and phosphatase activities. During the incubation, at a soil organic CP of ∼200, residues with low aromaticity promoted P mineralization, as evidenced by a sustained increase in labile inorganic P and decrease in microbial P. Conversely, residues with high aromaticity and hydrophobicity (i.e., silver maple) caused a decrease in labile inorganic P and increase in microbial P under the same soil organic CP, indicating the dominance of P immobilization. At a soil organic CP of 300, both sugar maple and silver maple promoted P immobilization. Mineralization rates were of lesser magnitude in the soils amended with silver maple, which interestingly contained the largest proportions of recalcitrant C and the highest ratios of aromaticity and hydrophobicity.
Diabetes is a chronic and complex disease determined by environmental and genetic factors. This study aimed to investigate the association between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure and fasting blood glucose levels and telomere length among coke-oven plant workers, to explore potential role of telomere length (TL) in the association between PAHs exposure and abnormal glucose level.

The cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2017. MCC950 The high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) was used to detect 11 urine biomarkers of PAHs exposure. TL was measured using the Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) method. Logistic regression model, the modified Poisson regression models, and mediation analysis were used to evaluate the associations between PAHs exposure, TL, and abnormal glucose.

The results showed that the urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-PYR) was positively related to abnormal glucose in a dose-dependent manner (P
=0.007), the prevalence ratio of abnormal glucose was 8% (95% CI 1.01-1.16) higher in 3rd tertile of urinary 1-PYR levels. Urinary 1-PYR in the 2nd tertile and 3rd tertile were associated with a 53% (OR=0.47, 95% CI 0.28-0.79) and 59% (OR=0.41, 95% CI 0.23-0.76) higher risk of shortening TL. And there was a negatively association between 1-PYR and TL in a dose-dependent manner (P
=0.045). We observed that the association between 1-PYR and abnormal glucose was more significantly positive among participants with median TL level (P
=0.006). In addition, mediation analysis showed the TL could explain 11.7% of the effect of abnormal glucose related to PAHs exposure.

Our findings suggested the effect of abnormal glucose related to PAHs exposure was mediated by telomere length in coke oven plant workers.
Our findings suggested the effect of abnormal glucose related to PAHs exposure was mediated by telomere length in coke oven plant workers.Saccharina japonica is an ecologically and economically important seaweed that is dominant in the rocky shores of cold-temperate regions, forms the major component of productive beds, and affects marine environments. S. japonica exhibits a high photosynthetic efficiency in natural seawater with low dissolved CO2 concentration, thus suggesting the presence of its carbon-concentrating mechanism (CCM). However, the genes, proteins, and pathways involved in the CCM of S. japonica have not been fully identified and characterized. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is a crucial component of CCM in macroalgae. In this study, the cloning, characterization, and subcellular localization of a specific CA were described. Multisequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis indicated that this CA belonged to the gamma (Sjγ-CA) class. This enzyme has a full-length cDAN of 1370 bp, encodes a protein with 246 amino acids (aa; ca. 25.7 kDa), and contains the mitochondrial transit peptide of 16 aa and LbH_gama_CA_like domain of 159 aa that defined the γ-CA region. The Sjγ-CA was successfully expressed in E. coli BL21 and purified as an active recombinant CA. Immunogold electron microscopy and fluorescence localization illustrated that this enzyme is localized in the mitochondria, and its transcription level is up-regulated by low CO2 concentration. These findings showed that Sjγ-CA is a possible component of the CCM in S. japonica. This work is the first to report about the mtCA of macroalgae and provides a basis for further analysis on seaweed CCM.MCC950
