 Functional connectivity (FC) is believed to be abnormal in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Most studies have focused on frontostriatal systems, and the role of the thalamic network in ADHD remains unclear. The current study used FC magnetic resonance imaging (fcMRI) to explore corticothalamic network properties and correlated network dysconnection with ADHD symptom severity. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Eighteen adolescents with ADHD and 16 healthy controls aged 12 to 17 years underwent resting functional MRI scans, clinical evaluations, and 2 parent rating scales, namely the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham IV scale and the Child Behavior Checklist. Six a priori cortical regions of interest were used to derive 6 networks the dorsal default mode network, frontoparietal network, cingulo-opercular network (CON), primary sensorimotor network (SM1), primary auditory network, and primary visual network (V1). The corticothalamic connectivity for each network was calculated for each participant and then compared between the groups.  To compare the perspectives of caregivers of children with autism receiving care at the Neurobehavior Healthy Outcomes Medical Excellence (HOME) Program, an interdisciplinary clinic that provides primary care and behavioral/mental health services for patients with autism and other developmental disabilities, with those responding to the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH). We focused on ratings related to shared decision-making, care coordination, family-centered care, and care within a medical home. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We administered a subset of items from the 2016 NSCH to caregivers of children with autism enrolled in HOME and compared responses with the same items from a nationally representative group of caregivers of children with autism who completed the 2016 NSCH. We compared the proportions that reported receiving shared decision-making, care coordination, family-centered care, care within a medical home, and unmet needs among the 2 study groups using Poisson regression, controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity, payor, autism severity, and intellectual disability (ID). &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Compared with the NSCH cohort (n = 1151), children enrolled in HOME (n = 129) were older, more often female, had severe autism, and had co-occurring ID. Caregivers perceived that children receiving care within HOME more often received family-centered, coordinated care within a medical home compared with a national sample of children with autism. HOME enrollees also reported increased access to behavioral treatments and adult transition services with less financial burden compared with the national sample. &lt;/p&gt;

 This study aims to show how full-time telemedicine adoption has impacted patient visit volume and attendance in a comprehensive metabolic and weight loss center. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Elective surgical practices have been profoundly impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a rapid increase in the utilization of telemedicine. The abrupt initiation of audio-video telehealth visits for all providers of a multidisciplinary clinic on March 19 2020 provided unique circumstances to assess the impact of telemedicine. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Data from the clinical booking system (new patient and follow-up visits) for all clinical provider types of the multidisciplinary metabolic center from the pre-telehealth, post-telehealth, and a 2019 comparative period were retrospectively reviewed and compared. The primary outcome is the change in patient visit volume for all clinical providers from before to after the initiation of telemedicine for both new patient, and follow-up visits. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There were a total of 506 visits (162 new patient visits, and 344 fup visits increased for certain nonsurgical providers. This provides a template for adoption of a multidisciplinary telehealth clinic in a post-pandemic world. &lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;FTR, or a postoperative death after a complication, is currently a nationally endorsed quality measure for adults. While it is a contributing factor to variation in mortality, relatively little is known about FTR after pediatric surgery. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Cohort study of 200,554 patients within the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric database (2012-2016) who underwent a high (≥1%) or low (&amp;lt;1%) mortality risk inpatient surgical procedures. Patients were stratified based on number of postoperative complications (0, 1, 2, or ≥3) and further categorized as having undergone either a low- or high-risk procedure. The association between the number of postoperative complications and FTR was evaluated with multivariable logistic regression. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Among patients who underwent a low- (8umber of postoperative complications after inpatient surgery and FTR, ever after common, 'minor' surgical procedures. Evidence from previous research is mixed while the classical internal-clock model assumes a linear scale with scalar variability, there is evidence that logarithmic timing provides a better fit to behavioral data. A major challenge for investigating the nature of the internal scale is that the retrieval process required for time judgments may involve a remapping of the subjective time back to the objective scale, complicating any direct interpretation of behavioral findings. Here, we used a novel approach, requiring rapid intuitive 'ensemble' averaging of a whole set of time intervals, to probe the subjective timeline. Specifically, observers' task was to average a series of successively presented, auditory or visual, intervals in the time range 300-1300 ms. Importantly, the intervals were taken from three sets of durations, which were distributed such that the arithmetic mean (from the linear scale) and the geometric mean (from the logarithmic scale) were clearly distinguishable. Consistently across the three sets and the two presentation modalities, our results revealed subjective averaging to be close to the geometric mean, indicative of a logarithmic timeline underlying time perception.Ultrasound imaging is affected by coherent noise or speckle, which reduces contrast and overall image quality and degrades the diagnostic precision of the collected images. Elevational angular compounding (EAC) is an attractive means of addressing this limitation, since it reduces speckle noise while operating in real-time. However, current EAC implementations rely on mechanically rotating a one-dimensional (1D) transducer array or electronically beam steering of two-dimensional (2D) arrays to provide different elevational imaging angles, which increases the size and cost of the systems. Here we present a novel EAC implementation based on a 1D array, which does not necessitate mechanically rotating the transducer. The proposed refraction-based elevational angular compounding technique (REACT) instead utilizes a translating cylindrical acoustic lens that steers the ultrasound beam along the elevational direction. Applying REACT to investigate phantoms and excised tissue samples demonstrated superior suppression of ultrasound speckle noise compared to previous EAC methods, with up to a two-fold improvement in signal- and contrast-to-noise ratios. The effects of elevational angular width on speckle reduction was further investigated to determine the appropriate conditions for applying EAC. This study introduces acoustic refractive elements as potential low cost solutions to noise reduction, which could be integrated into current medical ultrasound devices.Natural products have played a dominant role in the discovery of lead compounds for the development of drugs aimed at the treatment of human diseases. This electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (ESI-IMS-MS)-based study demonstrates that dietary antioxidants, isolated components from the stigmas of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) may be effective in inhibiting Aβ fibrillogenesis, a neuropathological hallmark of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). This study reveals a substantial alteration in the monomer/oligomer distribution of Aβ1-40, concomitant with re-direction of fibril formation, induced by the natural product interaction. These alterations on the Aβ1-40 aggregation pathway are most prominent for trans-crocin-4 (TC4). Use of ESI-IMS-MS, electron microscopy alongside Thioflavin-T kinetics, and the interpretation of 3-dimensional Driftscope plots indicate a correlation of these monomer/oligomer distribution changes with alterations to Aβ1-40 amyloid formation. The latter could prove instrumental in the development of novel aggregation inhibitors for the prevention, or treatment of AD.Glioblastoma (GBM) is a malignant brain tumour with a dismal prognosis, despite best treatment by surgical resection, radiation therapy (RT) and chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ). εpolyLlysine Nanoparticle (NP) therapy is an emerging consideration due to the ability of NPs to be formulated and cross the blood brain barrier. Lanthanum oxide (La2O3) NPs are therapeutically advantageous due to the unique chemical properties of lanthanum making it cytotoxic to cancers, and able to enhance existing anti-cancer treatments. However, La2O3 NPs have yet to be thoroughly investigated in brain tumors. We show that these NPs can reach the brain after venous injection, penetrate into GBM cells via endocytosis, dissociate to be cytotoxic, and enhance the therapeutic effects of RT and TMZ. The mechanisms of cell death by La2O3 NPs were found to be multifaceted. Increasing NP concentration was correlated to increased intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis pathway markers in a radical oxygen species (ROS)-dependent manner, as well as involving direct DNA damage and autophagic pathways within GBM patient-derived cell lines. NP interactions to sensitize GBM to RT and TMZ were shown to involve these pathways by enhancing ROS and apoptotic mechanisms. In addition, studies have shown that axenic females-those lacking a microbiome-have altered fecundity compared to females with a microbiome, and that the microbiome of the female's mate can influence reproductive success. However, the extent to which post-mating changes in transcript abundance are affected by microbiome state is not well-characterized. Here we investigated fecundity and the post-mating transcript abundance profile of axenic or control females after mating with either axenic or control males.       <description>&lt;p&gt;This work documents an all-in-one custom setup that allows us to measure the in-plane Seebeck coefficients and electrical conductivities of anisotropic thin film samples close to room temperature. Both pairs, S∥ and σ∥ and S⊥ and σ⊥, can be measured using four contacts on the same sample, reducing measurement time and minimizing potential sources of error due to aggregating data from several distinct samples. The setup allows us to measure the electrical conductivity of isotropic samples using the well-known van der Pauw method. Proteasome inhibition For samples with in-plane anisotropy, the two components σ∥ and σ⊥ can be extracted from the same type of measurements by performing additional calculations. Using the same contacts, the Seebeck coefficient along one direction is measured using a differential steady-state method. After rotating the sample by 90°, the orthogonal Seebeck component can be measured. In order to show the generality of the method, we measure different types of samples, from metal references to oriented doped conjugated polymers.We present a novel locking scheme for active length-stabilization and frequency detuning of a cavity optomechanical device based on the optical spring effect. The error signal is generated by utilizing the position measurement of a thermally driven intra-cavity nanomechanical device and employing its detuning-dependent frequency shift caused by the dispersive coupling to the cavity field. The scheme neither requires external modulation of the laser or the cavity nor does it demand for additional error signal readout, rendering its technical implementation rather simple for a large variety of existing optomechanical devices. Specifically, for large-linewidth microcavities or in situations where other locking schemes appear unfavorable conceptually or are hard to realize technically, the optical spring lock represents a potential alternative for stabilizing the cavity length. We explain the functional principle of the lock and characterize its performance in terms of bandwidth and gain profile.We demonstrate a compact magneto-optical trap (MOT) of alkaline-earth atoms using a nanofabricated diffraction grating chip. A single input laser beam, resonant with the broad 1S0 → 1P1 transition of strontium, forms the MOT in combination with three diffracted beams from the grating chip and a magnetic field produced by permanent magnets. A differential pumping tube limits the effect of the heated, effusive source on the background pressure in the trapping region. The system has a total volume of around 2.4 l. With our setup, we have trapped up to 5 × 10688Sr atoms at a temperature of ∼6 mK, and with a trap lifetime of ∼1 s. Our results will aid the effort to miniaturize quantum technologies based on alkaline-earth atoms.We developed a novel humidity control system for neutron reflectivity measurements based on the two-way gas-flow method that can generate up to 85% relative humidity (RH) within a temperature range of 5 °C-85 °C. The system consists of a gas-flow-type humidity generator and a thermostatic sample chamber, each of which can independently control the temperature. The key features include rapid humidity response and long stable operation time. The humidity reaches equilibrium within 2 to 5 min during the humidity change, and the system exhibited acceptable stability over a three-day, nonstop experimental measurement duration, with a precision of ±1% RH at 85 °C and 85% RH. The sample chamber is capable of measuring substrate samples with dimensions of up to 2-in. in diameter and 5-mm in thickness. We demonstrate the reflectivity data measured at a pulsed neutron facility, MLF BL17, in the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. The combined use of this system with neutrons permits in situ, time-resolved studies of the swelling process of polyvinyl alcohol and adhesive materials.Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are attractive for a digital spectrometer due to its advantages of digital signal processing. However, how to improve the versatility of the spectrometer and increase the operating frequency of the digital shaper has gradually become a limitation that needs to be resolved in the FPGA-based spectrometer. A solution to improve the universality of the FPGA-based digital spectroscopy system is presented in this work, and the implementation of the real-time digital signal processing unit is improved to obtain a higher operating frequency, and then the optimal parameters of the digital trapezoidal shaper and the processing unit are also discussed through a series of experiments; finally, a FPGA-based digital spectrometer is developed. With the HPGe detector, the spectrometer achieves excellent energy resolution performance of 0.35% at 662 keV, 0.25% at 1173.2 keV, and 0.23% at 1332.5 keV.We report a straightforward beam splitter in the soft x-ray spectral range using a thin oxidized aluminum foil. As it allows us to monitor reliably shot-to-shot variations in energy and in energy distribution, this beam splitter is of high interest for the simultaneous use of diagnostics for soft x-rays sources. We measure a transmission of 0.5 and a reflectivity of 0.018 at 22.5° of incidence with a soft x-ray laser working at 32.8 nm. These values are in good agreement with the theory. As the theory predicts a reflectivity and a transmission of both 12% at 52.5° of incidence for 32.8 nm, it can also be useful for experiments that require the division and recombination of a beam, for instance, interferometry or pump-probe technique with an intense soft x-ray source.In space applications, space charge inside dielectric materials can lead to unwanted phenomena such as breakdown and electrostatic discharge. To prevent such incidents, the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) device is employed to measure the space charge of dielectric samples. Unfortunately, most of the current PEA signal processing methods are inaccurate in studying the dielectric materials that attenuate and disperse the acoustic wave, as well as studying multi-layer or thin samples. A model under the PSpice software is developed in this work with the aim of improving the PEA signal processing. This model is an evolution of previous works, including the attenuation and dispersion of a polymer sample using the nearly local Kramers-Kronig relation. This model of the polymer sample is implemented into PSpice as a frequency dependent transmission line using Branin's method of characteristics model. Our results provide a putative mechanism for why diversity affects community function and invasion in a classic system for studying competition.Urban green spaces such as gardens often consist of native and exotic plant species, which provide pollen and nectar for flower-visiting insects. Although some exotic plants are readily visited by pollinators, it is unknown if and at which time of the season exotic garden plants may supplement or substitute for flower resources provided by native plants. To investigate if seasonal changes in flower availability from native vs. exotic plants affect flower visits, diversity and particularly plant-pollinator interaction networks, we studied flower-visiting insects over a whole growing season in 20 urban residential gardens in Germany. Over the course of the season, visits to native plants decreased, the proportion of flower visits to exotics increased, and flower-visitor species richness decreased. Yet, the decline in flower-visitor richness over the season was slowed in gardens with a relatively higher proportion of flowering exotic plants. This compensation was more positively linked to the proportion of exotic plant species than to the proportion of exotic flower cover. Plant-pollinator interaction networks were moderately specialized. Interactions were more complex in high summer, but interaction diversity, linkage density, and specialisation were not influenced by the proportion of exotic species. Thus, later in the season when few native plants flowered, exotic garden plants partly substituted for native flower resources without apparent influence on plant-pollinator network structure. Late-flowering garden plants support pollinator diversity in cities. If appropriately managed, and risk of naturalisation is minimized, late-flowering exotic plants may provide floral resources to support native pollinators when native plants are scarce.Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is independently associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in adults. Potential causes of this nonhemodynamic pathogenesis identified in adults include adverse body fat distribution, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA). In severely obese adolescents, the determinants of obesity-induced changes in left ventricular structure are poorly characterized. Cardiac ultrasonographic, demographic, anthropometric, and comorbidity-related data were prospectively collected in adolescents with severe obesity refractory to conservative treatment who presented for surgical therapy. Differences between adolescents with LVH and without LVH were evaluated using independent samples t, chi-square, or Fisher's exact test. Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate associations with left ventricular structural changes, corrected for body mass index (BMI) z score. Forty-three patients entered analysis, of whom 24 (55.8%) showed LVH. The most common geometrical change was eccentric LVH (eLVH), occurring in 21 subjects (48.8%). Demographic and anthropometric variables did not differ between patients with and without LVH. Independent of BMI z score, left ventricular mass index was significantly associated with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) (regression parameter B = 0.8; 95% CI 0.3 to 1.2). Interventricular septum thickness (IVST) was significantly associated with HOMA-IR values (B = 0.1; 95% CI 0.04 to 0.2), HDL-cholesterol (B = - 1.2; 95% CI - 2.2 to 0.1), and triglyceride levels (B = 0.5; 95% CI 0.001 to 0.9). LVH, especially eLVH, is highly prevalent amongst severely obese adolescents. Adverse changes in cardiac structure, increased IVST in particular, are independently associated with several nonhemodynamic comorbidities that are common in this population, namely OSA, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia.Performing interstage home monitoring using digital platforms (teleIHM) is becoming commonplace but, when used alone, may still require frequent travel for in-person care. We evaluated the acceptability, feasibility, and added value of integrating teleIHM with synchronous telemedicine video visits (VVs) and asynchronous video/photo sharing (V/P) during the interstage period. We conducted a descriptive program evaluation of patient-families receiving integrated multimodality telemedicine (teleIHM + VV + V/P) interstage care from 7/15/2018 to 05/15/2020. First, provider focus groups were conducted to develop a program logic model. Second, patient characteristics and clinical course were reviewed and analyzed with univariate statistics. Third, semi-structured qualitative interviews of family caregivers' experiences were assessed using applied thematic analysis. Within the study period, 41 patients received teleIHM + VV + V/P care, of which 6 were still interstage and 4 died. About half (51%) of patients were female and 54% were a racial/ethnic minority. Median age was 42 days old (IQR 25, 58) at interstage start, with a median of 113 total days (IQR 72, 151). A total of 551 VVs were conducted with a median 12 VVs (IQR 7, 18) per patient. Parents sent a median 2 pictures (IQR 0-3, range 0-82). Qualitatively, families reported an adjustment period to teleIHM, but engaged favorably with telemedicine overall. Families felt reassured by the oversight routine telemedicine provided and identified logistical and clinical value to VVs above teleIHM alone, while acknowledging trade-offs with in-person care. Integration of multimodality telemedicine is a feasible and acceptable approach to enhance in-home care during the interstage period. &lt;br&gt;
 To analyze the evolution post-cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) cardiomyopathy (CM) patients compared to other types of CM, according to clinical and functional variables, by using gated-SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Ninety-three patients (60 ± 11years, 28% women) referred for pre-CRT assessment were studied and divided into three groups 1 (non-ischemic CM with LVNC, 11 patients), 2 (ischemic CM, 28 patients), and 3 (non-ischemic CM, 53 patients). All were studied by a &lt;br&gt;
 Tc-MIBI gated-SPECT MPI at rest pre-CRT implantation and 6 ± 1months after, including intraventricular dyssynchrony assessment by phase analysis. Quality of life was measured by the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;No differences in sex, atherosclerotic risk factors other than smoking habit, and MLHFQ results were found among groups.
