Datavault AI (DVLT) stock fell nearly 50% after it said it can’t withdraw bitcoin from Biconomy, forcing a restatement that cuts $92.2M from reported assets.

Datavault AI (DVLT) stock fell nearly 50% on Tuesday after the company disclosed that it has been unable to withdraw bitcoin from the Biconomy exchange since June and will restate more than a year of financial statements.

The Nasdaq-listed company closed at $0.067 on October 27, down 49.55%, according to CoinDesk. The disclosure came in a Form 8-K filed with the SEC on October 26.

The issue is not simply that bitcoin’s price moved. Datavault now says bitcoin credited to its Biconomy account through a $150 million Scilex deal should not have been recorded as its own digital asset. That accounting change is expected to reduce reported assets by tens of millions of dollars across several reporting periods.

Why Is DVLT Stock Down Today?

DVLT stock fell nearly 50% because Datavault AI disclosed that it cannot withdraw bitcoin held at Biconomy and must restate financial statements from Q3 2025 through Q2 2026. The company will reclassify the bitcoin as a subscription receivable from Scilex rather than as its own digital asset.

According to CoinDesk, DVLT closed at $0.067 on October 27, down 49.55%, with roughly 244 million shares traded. CoinDesk

The sell-off reflects two concerns at once: the company may not be able to access bitcoin it previously treated as a source of liquidity, and its prior financial statements need to be corrected.

What Datavault AI Disclosed in Its 8-K

A Form 8-K is a current report that public companies file with the SEC to disclose material events that shareholders may need to know about.

In its October 26 filing, Datavault AI said it requested a withdrawal of bitcoin from its digital wallet at Biconomy Pte. Ltd. to an external account in June 2026. As of the filing date, that withdrawal had not been completed. Datavault AI Form 8-K

The company did not disclose why the withdrawal has not been completed.

Datavault also said that financial statements for Q3 2025 through Q2 2026 should no longer be relied upon. It intends to restate those statements, but has not set a date for the restatement filings.

The company also said it will reassess its going-concern conclusion. In simple terms, a going-concern assessment asks whether a company has enough resources to continue operating for the foreseeable future. Datavault had previously counted the bitcoin balances as a potential source of liquidity.

How the Bitcoin Ended Up on Biconomy

The issue traces back to a September 2025 securities purchase agreement between Datavault AI and Scilex Holding Company (SCLX).

Under that agreement, Scilex agreed to buy 15 million DVLT shares and a pre-funded warrant covering about 263.9 million additional shares for $150 million, payable in bitcoin. At the agreed spot rate of $112,915.52 per bitcoin, that equated to approximately 1,328.43 BTC. Datavault AI Form 8-K

Scilex credited 1,309.04 BTC to Datavault’s wallet at Biconomy through off-chain transfers on September 26 and November 25, 2025. The lower amount reflected a reduction of 19.39 BTC related to cash advances Scilex had made to Datavault before the deal closed.

Between September 2025 and January 2026, Datavault sold 491.431 BTC back to Scilex through off-chain transfers in exchange for approximately $40.5 million in cash.

Based on those reported figures, simple arithmetic suggests about 817.6 BTC remained credited to Datavault’s Biconomy account. That is not a confirmed on-chain balance; it is simply 1,309.04 BTC minus 491.431 BTC.

Scilex’s own reporting has said it sold $200 million of shares in its subsidiary Semnur to Biconomy for bitcoin, then used $150 million of that bitcoin to buy Datavault securities. That helps explain Biconomy’s role in the transaction, though the reason for the withdrawal delay remains undisclosed.

  What Is an Off-Chain Transfer?

An off-chain transfer is a balance change recorded inside a platform’s internal ledger rather than through a transaction on the underlying blockchain.

For example, if two users hold bitcoin on the same exchange and one sends bitcoin to the other, the exchange may simply update both internal account balances. No bitcoin transaction needs to appear on the Bitcoin blockchain at that moment.

That is different from an on-chain transfer. An on-chain bitcoin withdrawal creates a transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain, where anyone can independently verify the sending address, receiving address, amount, and confirmation status.

In Datavault’s case, the bitcoin was credited to its Biconomy wallet through off-chain transfers. The company later requested an on-chain withdrawal to an external account—but, according to its 8-K, that withdrawal has not been completed.

Why Datavault Is Restating Its Financials

After reviewing the transaction, Datavault concluded that the bitcoin associated with the Scilex deal did not meet the requirements to be recognized as the company’s own digital asset.

Instead, it will be recorded as a subscription receivable from Scilex.

A subscription receivable is essentially an amount owed to a company for shares that an investor agreed to purchase. It is a claim against the counterparty—not an asset the company fully controls.

That distinction matters. Datavault had treated the credited bitcoin as a digital asset on its balance sheet. The correction moves that value out of crypto assets and presents it as a reduction of stockholders’ equity.

The company also said related crypto gains and losses will be reversed.

The expected impact on reported total assets is significant:

As of

Expected reduction in total assets

September 30, 2025

$8.1 million

December 31, 2025

$92.2 million

March 31, 2026

$57.1 million

June 30, 2026

$49.0 million

These figures come from Datavault’s Form 8-K. Datavault AI Form 8-K

  What We Still Don’t Know

Several important questions remain unanswered.

It is not publicly known why Biconomy has not completed Datavault’s withdrawal request. The 8-K does not explain the reason, and CoinDesk reported that Biconomy had not responded to its request for comment as of Wednesday afternoon in Asia. CoinDesk

It is also unclear when Datavault will file its restated financial statements.

And while the company said it will reassess its going-concern conclusion, investors will need to wait for future filings to see what that assessment concludes.

This is a developing story. Any Biconomy statement, new SEC filing, or Nasdaq announcement could change the picture.

What This Means for Bitcoin Treasury Companies

The episode is a reminder that a company holding crypto through a third-party platform does not necessarily control that crypto in the same way it would control assets in its own self-custody wallet.

An exchange balance can depend on the platform’s internal systems, operational processes, compliance controls, and ability to process withdrawals.

For bitcoin treasury companies, investors may want to look beyond the headline number of “bitcoin held” and ask practical questions:

Is the bitcoin held in self-custody or with a third party?

Can the company withdraw assets to an external wallet?

Are holdings verifiable on-chain?

What legal or contractual rights does the company have if a withdrawal is delayed?

How would a custody issue affect liquidity and financial reporting?

None of these questions alone proves that a company is safe or unsafe. But they help investors understand the difference between a reported balance and an asset the company can independently access.

Lessons for Crypto Holders and Token Projects

The broader lesson applies to anyone holding crypto through a third-party platform.

A balance shown in an exchange account is not always the same as an asset you control directly on-chain. If the platform cannot process withdrawals, the balance may be difficult to access regardless of what the dashboard shows.

For crypto projects and token treasuries, practical steps include:

Keep operational funds in wallets where the project controls the keys, where appropriate for its security setup.

Use a test withdrawal before moving large amounts from any platform.

Verify treasury balances on-chain rather than relying only on an exchange dashboard.

Document where funds are held, who controls access, and what backup procedures exist.

Do not treat an exchange balance as fully controlled liquidity.

For Solana token creators, verifying a token’s mint address, metadata, and on-chain details is equally important. Solsmint’s rug-check tool can help users review a token’s on-chain risk profile before interacting with it.

This does not mean the tool could have prevented Datavault’s situation. It simply highlights the same principle: on-chain verification gives users a way to check what they are actually dealing with.

  Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Datavault AI stock drop 50%?

DVLT fell nearly 50% after Datavault AI disclosed that it could not withdraw bitcoin from Biconomy and would restate financial statements from Q3 2025 through Q2 2026. The company will reclassify the bitcoin as a subscription receivable rather than its own digital asset.

What happened to Datavault AI’s bitcoin?

Scilex credited 1,309.04 BTC to Datavault’s Biconomy wallet through off-chain transfers in 2025. Datavault later sold 491.431 BTC back to Scilex for about $40.5 million. In June 2026, Datavault requested a withdrawal of the remaining bitcoin, but the withdrawal remained incomplete as of October 26.

  What is Biconomy?

In this story, Biconomy refers to Biconomy Pte. Ltd., the crypto platform where Datavault’s bitcoin wallet was maintained. It should not be confused with similarly named crypto projects or services.

How much bitcoin did Scilex send to Datavault AI?

Scilex credited 1,309.04 BTC to Datavault’s Biconomy wallet through off-chain transfers on September 26 and November 25, 2025, according to Datavault’s Form 8-K.

What does a financial restatement mean for DVLT shareholders?

A restatement means previously issued financial statements should no longer be relied upon and will be corrected. For DVLT, the correction is expected to reduce reported total assets across four reporting periods.

What is an off-chain transfer in crypto?

An off-chain transfer changes balances within a platform’s internal ledger rather than through a transaction on the underlying blockchain. It is different from an on-chain transfer, which can be independently verified on a public block explorer.

Is Datavault AI a bitcoin treasury company?

Datavault AI has been described as a bitcoin treasury company because it received bitcoin through a corporate transaction and previously reported crypto holdings. However, its latest filing changes how part of that bitcoin should be accounted for.

  What is a subscription receivable?

A subscription receivable is an amount owed to a company for shares that an investor agreed to buy. It represents a claim against the investor, not an asset the company fully controls.

  Conclusion

Datavault AI’s 50% stock decline follows a disclosure that its bitcoin held at Biconomy could not be withdrawn and that more than a year of financial statements must be restated.

The company now says the bitcoin tied to the Scilex deal should be recorded as a subscription receivable rather than as its own digital asset. That correction is expected to reduce reported assets by $92.2 million at the end of 2025 and $49 million as of June 2026.

The reason for the delayed withdrawal remains undisclosed.

For crypto holders and project treasuries, the practical takeaway is simple: understand the difference between a balance shown on a platform and an asset you can verify and control on-chain.

Solana Alpenglow Upgrade: What 150ms Finality Means for Meme Coins and Token Creators

Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade is now live. It activated on mainnet on October 21, 2026, at epoch 1064, replacing the network’s long-running TowerBFT consensus system with a new approach designed to bring transaction finality down to roughly 150 milliseconds, compared with about 12.8 seconds previously.

For meme coin traders, token creators, and Solana application builders, the practical change is faster confirmation that a transaction is final. That can improve the experience of launching, trading, and settling token activity.

It does not lower fees by itself, guarantee liquidity, or make any token more valuable.

This article explains what Alpenglow changes, how the 150ms target works, and what it may mean for meme coins, token launches, and Solana token management.

  What Is Solana Alpenglow?

Alpenglow is Solana’s new consensus protocol.

Consensus is the process through which validators agree on the order of transactions and determine when a transaction becomes irreversible. That point is called finality.

Under the previous TowerBFT system, a transaction generally took about 12.8 seconds to reach finality. Alpenglow targets approximately 150 milliseconds. Solana describes that figure as an expectation rather than a fixed guarantee; actual finality can vary with network conditions.

Alpenglow changes how validators reach agreement. It does not change how Solana programs execute transactions, how users sign transactions, or how wallets and apps fundamentally operate.

Alpenglow Is Live on Solana Mainnet

Alpenglow activated on Solana mainnet at epoch 1064 on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The migration completed at slot 459,653,000, when validators retired TowerBFT—the consensus protocol Solana had used since its 2020 launch.

The upgrade followed testing on Solana’s devnet and testnet, migration rehearsals, security review, and validator adoption of the updated Agave validator software.

For ordinary users, the transition was designed to be non-disruptive. Wallets, transaction signing, and core application workflows continue to work as before. The difference is how quickly a transaction reaches finality.

  How Alpenglow Reaches 150ms Finality

Alpenglow’s first major component is Votor, a new voting and finalization system.

Instead of validators submitting votes as on-chain transactions, validators exchange directly signed voting messages with one another. Those votes are aggregated into certificates that finalize blocks.

A block can be finalized in one round when 80% of stake votes for it, or in two rounds when at least 60% does. This removes much of the voting traffic that previously occupied blockspace and shortens the path to finality.

In practical terms:

Before Alpenglow: Finality took roughly 12.8 seconds under TowerBFT.

After Alpenglow: Finality targets roughly 150 milliseconds.

What changes: Validator agreement and finalization.

What does not change: Transaction execution, wallet signing, and the basic way users interact with Solana apps.

The 150ms figure is a target, not a promise for every transaction. Network congestion, validator participation, geographic distribution, and application design can all affect real-world performance.

  Why Finality Matters

Finality is the point at which a transaction can no longer be reversed. It is different from simply seeing a transaction appear in a wallet or block explorer.

Faster finality can matter when users need confidence that a transaction has settled. Examples include:

A trader confirming that a swap has settled.

A marketplace confirming that an NFT purchase is complete.

A payment application confirming that funds have moved.

A token launch workflow confirming that a creation or distribution transaction has finalized.

Faster finality does not eliminate failed transactions, user errors, smart-contract bugs, or market risk. It reduces the waiting period for certainty that a completed transaction is final.

What Alpenglow Means for Meme Coin Trading

Meme coin trading is often fast-moving. It involves frequent swaps, rapid price discovery, and short-lived trading opportunities.

Alpenglow’s faster finality may improve the settlement experience by reducing the time it takes for a completed trade to become irreversible.

That can support several practical outcomes:

Quicker confirmation: Completed swaps may reach finality in a fraction of a second rather than taking several seconds.

Cleaner trading UX: Wallets, DEX interfaces, and trading tools can display a clearer final state sooner.

Reduced uncertainty: Traders may spend less time waiting to determine whether a transaction has settled.

More responsive applications: Trading interfaces and bots can react to finalized on-chain state faster.

However, faster finality does not guarantee better trade execution.

Slippage, liquidity depth, price impact, MEV-related risks, and market volatility still determine trading outcomes. A meme coin can finalize quickly and still be highly volatile or illiquid.

Crypto assets, including meme coins, are volatile. This article is educational and is not financial, investment, or trading advice.

What Alpenglow Means for Token Creators

For Solana token creators, Alpenglow is primarily an infrastructure improvement. It may make the launch and management experience feel more responsive, especially for workflows involving multiple on-chain actions.

  Token creation

Creating an SPL token involves configuring token details, connecting a compatible Solana wallet, reviewing the setup, approving the transaction, and receiving an on-chain token.

With faster finality, the confirmation stage of that workflow can settle more quickly.

Solsmint’s Solana token creator is designed for this no-code workflow. It helps creators configure supported token details before launch, but faster network finality does not guarantee adoption, liquidity, listings, or trading success.

If you are new to Solana tokens, read What Is an SPL Token? Solana Tokens Explained.

  Airdrops and community distribution

Airdrops often involve sending tokens to many wallets. Faster finality can make completed distribution transactions settle more quickly, which may improve the operational experience for creators running community campaigns.

Solsmint’s airdrop tool is designed to simplify bulk SPL token distribution. Network fees still apply, and creators should verify recipient addresses carefully before approving transactions.

  Liquidity and trading

Faster finality can make liquidity-related transactions feel more responsive, but it does not create liquidity.

A token needs real buyers, sellers, and a functioning market for trading activity to be meaningful.

Solsmint’s liquidity tools can help creators create or manage liquidity for a Solana token where supported. Liquidity provision still requires capital, planning, and an understanding of impermanent loss and market risk.

For a practical walkthrough, read Solana Liquidity Pools: Create, Add & Manage Liquidity.

  Token management

Alpenglow does not change token authorities, minting rules, burning mechanics, or token standards.

Creators still need to manage supply responsibly and understand the implications of mint and freeze authorities.

For a deeper explanation, see Solana Token Authorities: Mint, Freeze & Update.

  What Alpenglow Does Not Change

Alpenglow is a consensus upgrade, not a token-price mechanism.

It does not automatically:

Lower transaction fees.

Increase a token’s price.

Guarantee liquidity.

Guarantee DEX listings.

Prevent scams or rug pulls.

Improve tokenomics.

Make a meme coin a good investment.

Remove market volatility.

Transaction fees depend on Solana’s fee model, network demand, transaction complexity, and priority-fee choices. Alpenglow changes how quickly validators finalize blocks, not the underlying economics of every transaction.

  Common Misconceptions

“150ms means every transaction is instant.”

No. Alpenglow targets roughly 150 milliseconds of finality. Actual performance can vary based on network conditions and application design.

“Faster finality means higher token prices.”

No. Finality affects settlement certainty, not demand. Token prices depend on market demand, liquidity, utility, credibility, and broader market conditions.

“Alpenglow removes trading risk.”

No. Trading risk remains. Fast finality can reduce waiting time for settlement, but it does not protect users from volatility, slippage, scams, or poor liquidity.

“Alpenglow changes how SPL tokens work.”

No. SPL token creation, minting, burning, transfers, and authority management continue to operate through Solana’s token-program infrastructure. Alpenglow changes consensus, not token execution.

  How Token Creators Should Respond

Alpenglow is a reason to review operational workflows, not a reason to change token fundamentals.

Practical steps include:

Test launch workflows. Confirm that wallet connections, transaction approvals, and post-launch management steps work as expected.

Plan liquidity before launch. Faster finality does not replace the need for a liquidity strategy.

Communicate clearly. Explain the token’s purpose, supply, authorities, and limitations to your community.

Avoid misleading claims. Do not market Alpenglow as a reason a token will rise in value.

Check unfamiliar tokens. Before interacting with a new token, use Solsmint’s rug check tool to review its risk profile.

For creators launching a general-purpose Solana token, Solsmint’s token creation platform provides a no-code way to configure supported token details and connect a compatible Solana wallet before approving the launch transaction.

  Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Solana Alpenglow upgrade?

Alpenglow is Solana’s new consensus protocol. It replaces TowerBFT and is designed to reduce transaction finality from about 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds.

When did Alpenglow activate on Solana mainnet?

Alpenglow activated on Solana mainnet on October 21, 2026, at epoch 1064. The TowerBFT-to-Alpenglow transition completed at slot 459,653,000.

  Does Alpenglow guarantee 150ms finality?

No. Approximately 150 milliseconds is a target. Actual finality can vary with network conditions, validator participation, and application design.

Does Alpenglow lower Solana transaction fees?

No. Alpenglow changes consensus and finality. It does not automatically reduce transaction fees or change the cost structure of every Solana transaction.

What does Alpenglow mean for meme coins?

It may make completed meme coin trades settle faster and improve the responsiveness of trading applications. It does not guarantee better prices, deeper liquidity, or profitable trading.

Do token creators need to migrate their tokens after Alpenglow?

No. Existing SPL tokens do not need to migrate because of Alpenglow. The upgrade changes network consensus, not token execution or token standards.

  Conclusion

The Solana Alpenglow upgrade is a major consensus change. It retires TowerBFT and targets roughly 150 milliseconds of transaction finality, down from about 12.8 seconds.

For meme coin traders and token creators, the main benefit is faster settlement certainty—not lower fees, higher prices, or guaranteed liquidity.

If you are launching or managing a Solana token, treat Alpenglow as an infrastructure improvement and focus on the fundamentals that still matter: clear token design, responsible supply management, transparent authorities, real liquidity planning, and careful token verification.

Solsmint’s Solana token creator can help you configure and launch a general-purpose SPL token without writing code.

Learn how tokenized stocks work on Solana, why RWAs are growing, how they differ from regular stocks, and what risks to check before investing.

Tokenized stocks on Solana are blockchain-based representations of publicly traded shares or stock-related exposure. They are part of a broader category called real-world assets, or RWAs: traditional financial assets that are issued, tracked, or settled using blockchain infrastructure.

A token can make a stock easier to hold, transfer, or connect with on-chain applications. But it does not automatically change the legal rights behind it. Those rights still depend on the issuer, custody model, and jurisdiction.

Solana has become one of the most active networks for this trend because it combines fast transaction processing, relatively low fees, stablecoin settlement rails, and DeFi infrastructure in one execution environment. According to the Solana Foundation, Solana reported $3.7 billion in non-stablecoin RWA value across more than 313,000 holders as of late July 2026, with tokenized equities among its fastest-growing categories.

  What Are Tokenized Stocks?

A tokenized stock is a crypto asset designed to represent a stock, an equity interest, or exposure to a stock. The exact structure depends on the issuer: the token may represent a direct security entitlement, an indirect claim held through a custodian, or synthetic exposure to the referenced share.

Tokenization changes the recordkeeping and transfer layer. It does not automatically change the legal nature of the asset.

In the United States, the SEC treats tokenized securities as securities. That means federal securities rules and investor protections can apply whether ownership is recorded on-chain or off-chain, according to SEC Investor.gov.

That distinction matters. A token named after a well-known company is not necessarily a legitimate tokenized share. Holding an SPL token also does not automatically give someone voting rights, dividends, redemption rights, or a direct legal claim on the underlying company. Those rights depend on the issuer’s documentation and legal structure.

What Are Real-World Assets in Crypto?

Real-world assets, or RWAs, are traditional financial or physical assets represented or tracked on a blockchain. Common examples include tokenized U.S. Treasuries, money-market funds, bonds, private credit, commodities, real-estate-related instruments, and public equities.

The appeal is practical. A tokenized asset can potentially be transferred wallet-to-wallet, settled against stablecoins, used in supported DeFi applications, and tracked with greater transparency than a conventional database entry.

These benefits depend on the asset’s legal design, issuer controls, custody arrangements, and the rules of any platform involved.

RWAs are not one product type. A tokenized Treasury fund, a token representing gold, and a tokenized public share all face different requirements for pricing, redemption, compliance, custody, and liquidity.

Why Are Tokenized Stocks Growing on Solana?

Solana’s RWA growth is driven by a combination of technical and market factors rather than one single feature.

Lower transaction costs: Frequent transfers, smaller positions, and active trading become more practical when network fees are low. Solana’s fee structure is one reason tokenized assets can reach a broader retail audience.

Faster on-chain settlement: Solana’s shared execution environment lets wallets, assets, stablecoins, and protocols interact within the same on-chain state, subject to issuer and compliance rules.

Stablecoin liquidity: Tokenized assets often need a reliable way to price, trade, and settle. Solana’s stablecoin infrastructure supports many of these workflows.

DeFi integrations: Where issuer rules allow it, tokenized assets can connect with liquidity pools, lending markets, collateral systems, and trading venues.

More issuer activity: Solana reports live or announced tokenization initiatives involving asset managers, transfer agents, payment companies, and financial institutions across Treasuries, equities, credit, and other asset classes, according to the Solana Foundation.

Tokenized equities are a particularly visible part of this growth. Solana reported that, as of late July 2026, 97% of all on-chain tokenized equities spot volume to date had settled on its network, although the category remains early compared with traditional public equity markets.

How Do Tokenized Stocks Work on Solana?

The exact process varies by issuer, but the general flow looks like this:

Underlying asset
→ issuer/legal structure
→ token issuance on Solana
→ wallet ownership
→ trading or DeFi use

An issuer, transfer agent, or authorized platform establishes the legal structure for the tokenized asset.

The underlying share or entitlement is held, recorded, or managed according to that structure.

A token is issued on Solana, often as an SPL token or through Solana’s Token Extensions framework.

Eligible users hold the token in a compatible Solana wallet.

The token may be transferred, traded, or used in supported applications, subject to transfer restrictions and compliance controls.

Liquidity, redemption, corporate actions, and investor rights depend on the issuer and platform.

Solana’s Token Extensions can support compliance-aware designs, including transfer hooks for allowlists or KYC-related checks, confidential transfer features, and issuer-controlled administrative functions.

These tools do not make a token compliant by themselves. Compliance depends on how the issuer implements and governs them.

  Tokenized Stocks vs. Regular Stocks

Neither model is universally superior. Traditional markets have established legal and operational systems, while tokenized markets may offer different transfer and settlement mechanics. The practical outcome depends on the specific product.

Area

Regular stock

Tokenized stock

Recordkeeping

Maintained through brokerage, registrar, or clearing infrastructure

Ownership or entitlement recorded through a blockchain-based token system, wholly or partly

Transfer

Usually routed through brokerage and clearing systems

May support wallet-to-wallet transfer where the issuer and platform allow it

Trading hours

Often constrained by exchange market hours

Availability can depend on the platform, liquidity, and applicable rules

Ownership rights

Defined by securities law and issuer documents

Depend on the token’s legal wrapper, issuer terms, and jurisdiction

Custody

Brokerage or custodian

Wallet, custodian, or platform-controlled arrangement

Risks

Market, issuer, brokerage, and operational risks

Market, issuer, custody, smart-contract, liquidity, platform, and regulatory risks

Tokenized Stocks vs. Stablecoins vs. Meme Coins

Many Solana tokens look similar in a wallet, but they can serve very different purposes.

Type

Main purpose

Value relationship

Typical use

Tokenized stock

Represents a stock or stock-related exposure

Depends on the issuer structure and underlying asset arrangement

On-chain exposure to equities

Stablecoin

Tracks the value of another asset, often a fiat currency

Designed to maintain a stable reference value

Payments, trading, settlement, DeFi

Meme coin

Community, culture, attention, or speculation

Often driven by demand, sentiment, and community participation

Community engagement and trading

Generic SPL token

Can represent many things, from a project token to a reward point

Depends entirely on the project and token design

Varies by use case

A stablecoin is not a stock, and a meme coin is not automatically an RWA. Likewise, an SPL token is simply a token standard on Solana; it does not tell you whether the asset is backed, regulated, or legally meaningful.

If you are new to Solana tokens, start with What Is an SPL Token? Solana Tokens Explained. For a broader introduction to launching a token, read the Solana Token Creation: Beginner’s Complete Guide.

  Why RWAs Are Attracting Attention

The growth of RWAs comes from a simple idea: bring familiar financial assets on-chain so they can be transferred, settled, and used in blockchain-based applications.

Tokenized Treasuries were an early focus because they are familiar, yield-bearing instruments that institutions already understand. Solana’s RWA ecosystem has since expanded into public equities, private credit, reinsurance, sovereign debt, commodities, and liquidity funds, according to the Solana Foundation.

For tokenized stocks, the potential benefits include broader distribution, faster on-chain settlement, programmable transfer controls, and integration with stablecoin-based financial applications.

These are possibilities, not guarantees. A tokenized stock still needs credible issuance, reliable custody, clear investor rights, functioning redemption or corporate-action processes, and real secondary liquidity.

Regulatory developments are also shaping the market. In September 2026, the SEC created a temporary, conditional framework—often described as an “innovation exemption”—for certain trading venues and liquidity providers to facilitate trading of tokenized National Market System stocks, subject to conditions. This is a regulatory pathway, not a blanket approval for every tokenized-stock product, according to Reuters.

Risks of Tokenized Stocks and RWAs

Tokenized stocks introduce both traditional investment risks and crypto-specific risks.

Regulatory and jurisdictional risk: Rules differ by country and can change. A product available in one jurisdiction may be restricted or unavailable elsewhere. In the U.S., tokenized securities remain subject to securities regulation.

Issuer and counterparty risk: The issuer, transfer agent, custodian, or platform may fail operationally or financially.

Custody risk: Users need to understand whether they control the wallet, whether a platform controls access, and what happens if the platform becomes unavailable.

Smart-contract risk: Token programs, transfer controls, bridges, and DeFi integrations can contain vulnerabilities.

Liquidity risk: A token can exist on-chain without deep, reliable markets. Low liquidity can make trading difficult and increase price impact.

Market risk: Tokenized exposure to a stock can still lose value if the underlying asset or referenced market declines.

Misleading tokens: Impersonator tokens can copy a company’s name, ticker, logo, or metadata without any connection to the real issuer.

Unclear rights: A token may provide synthetic exposure rather than shareholder rights such as voting or dividends, according to SEC Investor.gov.

Platform dependency: Trading, redemption, and corporate-action handling may rely on a centralized platform even when the token itself is on-chain.

Tax and reporting complexity: Tokenized assets can create reporting questions that vary by user location and product structure.

An on-chain token is not proof that the underlying asset exists, that the issuer is legitimate, or that the product is legally compliant.

How to Evaluate a Tokenized Stock on Solana

Before interacting with an unfamiliar tokenized asset, use a verification checklist:

Identify the official issuer or platform. Use the issuer’s official website and documentation, not only a social-media post or DEX listing.

Confirm the exact mint address. Token names and symbols can be copied; the mint address is the more reliable on-chain identifier.

Read the legal documentation. Look for clear explanations of what the token represents, who holds the underlying asset, and what rights tokenholders have.

Check eligibility and transfer restrictions. Some tokenized securities are limited by geography, investor status, wallet allowlists, or transfer controls.

Review liquidity and trading venues. Check where the token trades, how deep the liquidity is, and whether the venue is credible.

Inspect metadata carefully. Make sure the logo, symbol, name, and links match the official issuer.

Review token authorities. Mint and freeze authority settings can affect supply and transferability. Learn how these controls work in Solana Token Authorities: Mint, Freeze & Update.

Run a risk check. Before connecting, swapping, or approving an unfamiliar token, use Solsmint’s rug check tool to review a Solana token’s risk profile.

Liquidity is especially important. A token can exist on-chain but still be difficult to trade if there is not enough depth in its market. Learn how Solana liquidity pools work in Solana Liquidity Pools: Create, Add & Manage Liquidity.

This process reduces avoidable mistakes, but it cannot eliminate investment, legal, or counterparty risk.

What Token Creators Can Learn From the RWA Trend

The RWA trend is a useful lesson for any Solana token creator: token design affects trust.

The best token projects are clear about what they do. They use accurate metadata, manage supply carefully, explain their authority settings, and plan liquidity before launch. They also communicate risks instead of implying that a token automatically has value, utility, or regulatory approval.

For creators building token-based projects on Solana, Solsmint’s Solana token creator provides a no-code way to configure supported token details before launch. After launch, creators can use Solsmint to create or manage liquidity for a Solana token where supported, and can review token risk factors through its rug-check workflow.

For a practical walkthrough, see Create a Solana Liquidity Pool Free: No-Code Raydium LP.

Solsmint provides general Solana token creation and management infrastructure. It does not create, issue, support, list, or manage regulated tokenized stocks or securities.

  Frequently Asked Questions

What are tokenized stocks on Solana?

Tokenized stocks on Solana are blockchain-based representations of publicly traded shares or stock-related exposure. The rights attached to each token depend on the issuer, legal structure, custody arrangement, and jurisdiction.

Are tokenized stocks the same as regular stocks?

Not necessarily. Some structures aim to mirror the rights of a traditional share, while others provide an indirect entitlement or synthetic exposure. Tokenization changes how the asset is represented and transferred; it does not automatically create identical legal rights.

What is an RWA in crypto?

An RWA is a real-world financial or physical asset represented or tracked on-chain, such as a Treasury fund, bond, commodity, credit instrument, or public equity.

Why is Solana used for tokenized assets?

Solana offers fast transactions, relatively low fees, stablecoin settlement infrastructure, and DeFi connectivity in a shared execution environment. These characteristics can support frequent transfers, broad distribution, and on-chain financial workflows.

  Are tokenized stocks regulated?

Often, yes. In the United States, the SEC treats tokenized securities as securities subject to federal securities laws and investor protections. Availability and rules still vary by jurisdiction and product.

Can anyone create a tokenized stock on Solana?

No. Creating an ordinary SPL token is technically different from issuing a compliant tokenized security. Tokenized stocks generally require an issuer, legal structure, custody or transfer-agent arrangement, compliance controls, and jurisdiction-specific approvals or exemptions.

What are the risks of tokenized stocks?

Key risks include regulatory uncertainty, issuer failure, custody problems, smart-contract vulnerabilities, low liquidity, market losses, impersonator tokens, unclear ownership rights, and tax complexity.

How can I check whether a Solana token is legitimate?

Verify the official issuer, confirm the exact mint address, read the legal documentation, inspect metadata, review liquidity, and check token authorities. A risk-checking workflow can help surface common red flags before you interact with a token.

  Conclusion

Tokenized stocks are a practical example of why RWAs are expanding on Solana. The network’s speed, fees, stablecoin rails, and DeFi infrastructure make it well suited to tokenization activity, while growing issuer participation has brought tokenized equities into a more active phase.

Still, tokenized stocks are not automatically safer, more liquid, or legally equivalent to conventional shares. Their value depends on credible issuance, clear legal rights, sound custody, real liquidity, and compliance.

For anyone exploring Solana tokens—whether an RWA, community token, or new project—the same principles apply: verify the token, understand its design, and manage supply and liquidity responsibly. Solsmint’s Solana token creator can help creators configure and launch general-purpose SPL tokens without writing code.

An SPL token is a digital asset created and managed on the Solana blockchain through Solana’s token-program infrastructure. SPL stands for Solana Program Library.

Unlike SOL, which is Solana’s native asset used to pay network fees, SPL tokens are separate assets that projects, communities, apps, and individuals can create. Examples include community tokens, governance tokens, stablecoins, reward points, and in-game currencies.

This guide explains what an SPL token is, how it works, how it differs from SOL and NFTs, and what beginners should understand before creating one.

Educational notice: This article is for informational purposes only. It is not financial, investment, legal, or trading advice. Creating or interacting with tokens involves risk, and token creation does not guarantee utility, liquidity, demand, or value.

  What Does SPL Token Mean?

SPL stands for Solana Program Library. It is a collection of on-chain programs and tools maintained for the Solana ecosystem, including the token programs used to create and manage digital assets.

An SPL token is not a separate blockchain and not something users need to buy before using Solana. It is a token that lives on Solana and is managed by a token program.

Solana’s documentation describes tokens on the network as SPL tokens and explains that token programs contain the instruction logic for interacting with both fungible and non-fungible tokens. Solana token documentation

A useful way to think about it:

Solana is the blockchain

SOL is Solana’s native asset

An SPL token is a token created on Solana through its token-program infrastructure

For example, a project can create a token called “Community Coin” on Solana. That token may have its own name, symbol, supply, image, and mint address—but it still exists on the Solana network.

How Do SPL Tokens Work on Solana?

SPL tokens rely on a few core on-chain components: a token program, a mint account, token accounts, and wallet ownership.

  Token Program

A token program contains the logic for creating, transferring, minting, burning, and managing tokens. Solana has two main token programs:

The original Token Program

The Token Extension Program, commonly called Token-2022

Solana’s documentation states that the original Token Program provides basic token capabilities such as minting and transferring, while Token-2022 includes those features and adds functionality through extensions. Solana token documentation

  Mint Account

Every SPL token has a mint account. This account defines the token and stores shared information that applies to all units of that token.

A mint account stores data such as:

Total supply

Decimals

Mint authority

Freeze authority, if one is configured

Solana’s documentation explains that the mint account represents a specific token and acts as a global counter for its supply. Solana token documentation

  Token Accounts

A token account tracks ownership of a particular token. It records which mint the tokens belong to, who owns the account, and how many tokens it currently holds.

A wallet needs a token account for each token it wants to hold. For example, if one wallet holds two different SPL tokens, it will generally have separate token accounts for each mint.

Solana also uses associated token accounts, or ATAs. These are token accounts with addresses derived from the owner’s address and the token’s mint address. They act as a predictable default token account for a specific wallet and token. Solana token documentation

It helps to separate these ideas:

A wallet address identifies the user’s main Solana account

A mint address identifies a specific token

A token account holds a balance of a specific token for a specific owner

A wallet interface may display tokens as if they are simply “inside” the wallet, but on-chain they are associated with token accounts owned by that wallet.

  Transactions and Network Fees

Sending, minting, burning, or otherwise interacting with an SPL token requires a Solana transaction. Transactions are processed by the network and may require SOL to pay applicable network fees.

The exact cost depends on the transaction, account creation requirements, network conditions, and whether priority fees are used. Creating or holding certain token accounts may also require a refundable minimum balance for account storage.

What Is the Difference Between SOL and an SPL Token?

SOL and SPL tokens are both digital assets on Solana, but they serve different roles.

Asset

SOL

SPL Token

What it is

Solana’s native asset

A token created through Solana’s token-program infrastructure

Role on Solana

Used for network fees and core network activity

Can represent a community token, utility asset, stablecoin, reward point, or other digital asset

Typical uses

Paying transaction fees, staking-related activity, and interacting with the network

Payments, governance, rewards, DeFi, gaming assets, community tokens, and more

Network fees

SOL is used to pay applicable transaction fees

SPL token transactions generally still require SOL for network fees

Can a project create its own version?

No. SOL is Solana’s native asset.

Yes. Projects can create their own SPL tokens.

SOL is not an ordinary SPL token. It is the native asset of the Solana network. SPL tokens are separate assets created and managed through Solana’s token programs. Solana token documentation

What Are SPL Tokens Used For?

SPL tokens can represent many kinds of digital assets. What a token actually does depends entirely on the project and how it is implemented.

Common uses include:

Meme coins and community tokens: tokens created around a community, brand, or shared interest

Utility and governance tokens: tokens used for access, voting, or participation in a project

Rewards and incentives: loyalty points, referral rewards, or community incentives

Payments and digital assets: tokens used within an app, marketplace, or service

DeFi applications: tokens used in lending, trading, staking-related systems, or liquidity markets

Stablecoins: tokens designed to track the value of another asset, such as a fiat currency

In-game or loyalty assets: fungible game currencies or membership points

Creating an SPL token does not automatically give it utility, users, demand, liquidity, or value. The token’s purpose must be supported by the project, product, community, or system built around it.

  SPL Tokens vs. NFTs

SPL tokens and NFTs are both digital assets on Solana, but they work differently.

A fungible token is interchangeable. One unit is generally equivalent to another unit of the same token. If you hold 100 units of a community token, each unit is the same as the next.

An NFT, or non-fungible token, represents a distinct asset. One NFT is not interchangeable with another in the same way. For example, one digital collectible may have a different image, serial number, or set of attributes from another.

The distinction is not only about the name. NFT implementations can differ from ordinary fungible SPL tokens, and metadata, ownership records, and standards may vary depending on the implementation. Solana’s documentation notes that token programs support interaction with both fungible and non-fungible tokens. Solana token documentation

In simple terms:

SPL fungible token: 1 token equals another token of the same type

NFT: each asset is distinct and generally not interchangeable with another

Important SPL Token Properties Beginners Should Understand

Before creating or evaluating an SPL token, it helps to understand the properties that define it.

Property

What It Means

Why It Matters

Token name

The human-readable name, such as “Community Coin”

Helps users recognize the token

Symbol

The short ticker, such as “CC”

Used in wallets, explorers, and trading interfaces

Mint address

The unique on-chain identifier for the token

Used to verify the exact token across wallets, apps, and explorers

Decimals

The number of decimal places used to display fractional units

Affects how token amounts are represented, not the token’s value

Supply

The total number of token units currently in existence

Important for understanding token distribution

Mint authority

The address authorized to create additional units, if configured

Determines whether more tokens can be minted

Freeze authority

The address authorized to freeze and thaw token accounts, if configured

Relevant to whether token accounts can be restricted

Metadata and image

The token’s public name, symbol, description, and image, where supported

Helps wallets and explorers display the token correctly

A token’s name and symbol are useful for recognition, but they do not uniquely identify it. Two tokens can share the same name or ticker. The mint address is the reliable identifier.

  Token Supply and Decimals

Supply is the total number of token units that currently exist. If a project creates 1,000,000 tokens and does not mint more, the supply is 1,000,000.

Decimals determine how fractional units are displayed. A token with 9 decimals can represent amounts down to 0.000000001 of a token.

For example, if a token has 9 decimals, a balance displayed as 1 token may be represented on-chain as 1,000,000,000 base units. Decimals affect representation and divisibility; they do not determine a token’s price, value, or success.

  Mint Authority

The mint authority is the address authorized to create additional units of a token, if one is configured.

If a mint authority remains active, that address may be able to mint more tokens and increase supply. If no mint authority is present, the mint has a fixed supply and no further tokens can be minted. Solana create-a-mint documentation

This is an important distinction. A fixed supply does not guarantee value, but it does mean no additional units can be minted under the applicable token program.

  Freeze Authority

The freeze authority, when configured, is the address authorized to freeze and thaw token accounts.

Freezing a token account can prevent transfers, burns, and delegate changes for that account. Thawing restores normal functionality. Solana’s documentation describes freeze and thaw actions as authority-controlled operations. Solana SPL Token Basics

Not every token has a freeze authority. Whether a token can be frozen depends on how it was created and whether a freeze authority was configured.

  Metadata and Token Image

A mint account stores core token-program data such as supply, decimals, and authority settings. Human-readable details—such as the token name, symbol, description, and image—are handled separately as metadata.

Solana’s documentation explains that metadata can be added using Metaplex Token Metadata or, for tokens created with Token-2022, through the Token-2022 metadata extension. Solana create-a-mint documentation

Metadata helps wallets and explorers display a token correctly, but it should still be verified through the mint address.

What Is the Difference Between the Token Program and Token-2022?

The original Solana Token Program provides the foundational functionality for creating and managing SPL tokens. It is widely used and includes core actions such as creating a mint, minting tokens, transferring tokens, burning tokens, and setting authorities.

Token-2022, also called the Token Extension Program, includes the original Token Program’s core functionality and adds features through extensions.

Extensions can support different token behaviors or metadata approaches. However, not every extension is supported by every wallet, application, or service. Compatibility depends on the specific extension, the token implementation, and the tools interacting with it.

For a beginner, the practical takeaway is simple: the original Token Program is the established baseline, while Token-2022 offers an extension-based approach for projects that need additional functionality. Always confirm that the wallets, exchanges, and applications you plan to use support the token type and features you choose.

Can Anyone Create an SPL Token?

In general, yes. Creating an SPL token is a technical process that can be done through code or through a no-code interface. But creating a token is only the first step.

A creator typically needs:

A compatible Solana wallet

SOL for applicable transaction fees and account-related costs

Token details, including name, symbol, supply, and decimals

Authority settings, such as mint authority and freeze authority

Metadata and an image, where supported

A clear reason for creating the token

Creating a token on-chain is different from building a complete project. It does not automatically create a product, establish utility, attract users, generate trading volume, or create a liquid market.

If you want to create your own Solana token without writing code, you can explore Solsmint’s Solana token creator.

How to Create an SPL Token Without Coding

The exact workflow depends on the platform, but a typical no-code process looks like this:

Choose a token creation interface.

Connect a compatible Solana wallet.

Enter the token name and symbol.

Configure the supply and decimals.

Set the available authority options.

Add metadata or an image where supported.

Review all token details and applicable costs.

Approve the transaction in the wallet.

Save the resulting mint address.

Verify the token details using a Solana explorer.

This is a general workflow, not a guarantee that every platform supports every configuration. Before creating a token, review the supported token program, metadata options, authority settings, and network costs in the interface you are using.

Solsmint provides a no-code interface for supported Solana token creation workflows. You can explore Solsmint’s token creator to see the current options.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Creating an SPL Token

Confusing the Wallet Address With the Mint Address

Your wallet address identifies your Solana account. The mint address identifies the token itself. They are not the same thing.

Always share and verify the token’s mint address when directing users to a specific token.

Choosing the Wrong Supply or Decimals

Supply and decimals are important configuration choices. Changing them later may not be possible or practical, depending on the token setup.

Think through the intended use case before creating the mint.

  Misunderstanding Mint Authority

If mint authority remains active, additional tokens may be mintable. If the goal is a fixed supply, understand how to remove or revoke mint authority according to the token program and interface being used.

Assuming Every Token Can Be Frozen

Freeze authority is optional. A token cannot necessarily be frozen just because it is an SPL token. Check whether a freeze authority was configured.

  Ignoring Metadata Compatibility

A token image and description may not display correctly in every wallet or application. Metadata compatibility depends on the token program, metadata standard, and platform.

  Forgetting Applicable Network Costs

Token creation and token-account operations can involve Solana network fees and account-related costs. Review the transaction details before approving them.

Assuming Token Creation Creates Liquidity or Demand

Creating a token does not create a market. Liquidity, buyers, trading volume, exchange listings, and community interest require separate work.

Assuming a Token Is Safe Because It Exists On-Chain

An on-chain token is not automatically legitimate or safe. Verify the mint address, review available project information, and use caution before interacting with unfamiliar tokens.

For token risk research, Solsmint provides a rug check tool.

  Frequently Asked Questions

What does SPL stand for in Solana?

SPL stands for Solana Program Library. In everyday usage, an SPL token refers to a token created and managed on Solana through its token-program infrastructure.

  Is SOL an SPL token?

No. SOL is Solana’s native asset and is used for network fees and core network activity. SPL tokens are separate assets created through Solana’s token programs.

Are SPL tokens and Solana tokens the same thing?

The terms are often used interchangeably. “Solana token” usually means a token on Solana, while “SPL token” more specifically refers to a token managed through Solana’s token-program infrastructure.

How do I find an SPL token’s mint address?

You can find it through a Solana explorer, a wallet’s token details view, or the project’s official documentation. The mint address is the token’s unique identifier, so always verify it before interacting with a token.

Can anyone create an SPL token?

Yes, in general. A creator needs a compatible Solana wallet, SOL for applicable fees, and the token configuration details. Creating a token does not guarantee users, utility, liquidity, or value.

Do SPL tokens have a maximum supply?

Not necessarily. A token’s supply depends on how it was created. If no mint authority is configured, no additional tokens can be minted under the applicable token program. If mint authority remains active, more tokens may be mintable.

What is the difference between an SPL token and an NFT?

An SPL fungible token has interchangeable units, while an NFT represents a distinct asset. NFT implementations can differ from ordinary fungible SPL tokens.

How much does it cost to create an SPL token?

The cost depends on Solana network fees, account-related costs, and any platform fees charged by the creation interface. Review the transaction before signing; costs can vary based on the token configuration and network conditions.

  Conclusion

An SPL token is a digital asset created and managed on Solana through its token-program infrastructure. SPL stands for Solana Program Library, and SPL tokens can represent community tokens, utility assets, stablecoins, rewards, and many other digital assets.

SOL remains Solana’s native asset, while SPL tokens are separate assets that projects can create. A token’s mint address identifies it on-chain, while its supply, decimals, mint authority, freeze authority, and metadata define how it works and how it appears in wallets and explorers.

Creating an SPL token is accessible, but it is only the beginning. A token still needs a clear purpose, responsible management, and real demand to become useful.

A Solana liquidity pool holds two tokens that traders can swap against through a decentralized exchange. For a new SPL token, a token/SOL pool lets users trade between the project token and SOL without relying on a traditional order book.

Liquidity is part of a token’s trading infrastructure. It can reduce the price impact of swaps, but it does not create demand, guarantee trading volume, protect a token from manipulation, or determine whether a project succeeds.

This guide explains how pools work, how Standard and CLMM pools differ, what to review before adding liquidity, and what costs and risks to consider.

Educational notice: This article is for informational purposes only. It is not financial, investment, legal, or trading advice. Liquidity provision involves market risk, including potential impermanent loss, and liquidity can be removed or changed depending on the pool and protocol.

What Is a Solana Liquidity Pool?

A liquidity pool is a smart-contract-based reserve of tokens that supports decentralized trading. Instead of matching a buyer with a seller in an order book, an automated market maker (AMM) lets traders swap against the assets held in the pool.

A simple token/SOL pool might contain:

A project’s SPL token

SOL as the quote asset

A trader can swap SOL for the project token, or the project token for SOL. The pool’s pricing mechanism determines the exchange rate based on the available balances and the pool type.

  Illustrative Example

Suppose a pool holds 100,000 project tokens and 10 SOL. Those balances imply an initial relative price based on the pool’s mechanics—not a guaranteed market price.

If a trader swaps a large amount of SOL for the project token, the pool’s token balance falls and its SOL balance rises. The quoted price can move as a result. A larger trade generally has a larger price impact, especially in a pool with limited liquidity.

The exact behavior depends on the AMM design. A standard constant-product pool and a concentrated-liquidity pool do not price trades in exactly the same way.

Why Does Liquidity Matter for a Solana Token?

Liquidity affects how easily users can trade a token at a given size without materially moving the quoted price.

A token can exist on-chain without having a useful trading market. Creating an SPL token does not automatically create buyers, sellers, trading volume, exchange listings, or price appreciation.

Liquidity is different from:

Token supply: the number of units minted

Market capitalization: a valuation metric, often calculated by multiplying price by circulating supply

Trading volume: the value or quantity of trades over a period

Token price: the quoted value of the asset in a particular market

A pool can provide a venue for trading, but demand still comes from users. Liquidity alone does not guarantee either.

How Does a Token/SOL Liquidity Pool Work?

A token/SOL liquidity pool generally contains both assets. A liquidity provider deposits them according to the pool’s required ratio and receives a representation of their position.

  Initial Pricing

When creating a new pool, the creator chooses the amounts of each asset and, in many interfaces, an initial price. The pool’s mechanics determine how those inputs relate to one another.

For example, if a creator wants an initial price of 0.0001 SOL per project token, the pool must hold assets in the ratio implied by that price. If the creator deposits 10 SOL, the corresponding token amount depends on the selected initial price and the pool’s pricing model.

That initial price is not a promise that the token will trade at that level. Market participants may buy, sell, or ignore the asset entirely.

  Swaps

When someone buys the project token with SOL, the pool receives SOL and sends project tokens to the buyer. When someone sells the project token, the reverse occurs.

Because the pool balances change, the quoted price can change after each trade. Larger trades tend to have a greater effect on price, especially when liquidity is limited.

  Liquidity Providers

A liquidity provider (LP) supplies the assets. In a Standard or CPMM pool, the provider commonly receives fungible LP tokens representing their share of the pool. In a CLMM pool, the provider receives a position NFT representing a specific price range.

LPs may receive trading fees generated by pool activity, but fee earnings depend on the pool design, trading activity, fee tier, position range, and other factors. No earnings are guaranteed.

  Standard vs. CLMM Liquidity Pools

A Standard pool—often called a CPMM or constant-product pool—spreads liquidity across the full price curve. A CLMM (concentrated liquidity market maker) lets a provider allocate liquidity within a selected price range.

Feature

Standard / CPMM Pool

CLMM Pool

Liquidity distribution

Spread across the full price curve

Concentrated within a selected price range

Position representation

Often fungible LP tokens

Typically a position NFT

Ongoing management

Generally simpler

Requires active range management

Capital efficiency

Lower relative to a well-managed in-range CLMM position

Potentially higher while the price remains in range

When price leaves the range

Liquidity remains active across the curve

The position may become inactive or single-sided

Fee accounting

Often pool-level, depending on protocol

Often position-level

Beginner consideration

Usually simpler to understand

Requires understanding price ranges and rebalancing

Raydium describes CPMM as a standard
xy=k
constant-product pool and CLMM as a concentrated-liquidity AMM in which liquidity is provided within price ranges. CLMM positions can earn fees only while the price remains inside the selected range.

Raydium pool-creation documentation

Raydium CLMM overview

Neither option is universally better. A Standard pool may suit a creator who wants a simpler setup. A CLMM pool may suit an experienced manager who understands price ranges and is prepared to monitor the position.

How to Create a Liquidity Pool on Solana

The exact steps depend on the protocol, pool type, and interface. The general process is:

Create the SPL token and record its mint address.

Decide which trading pair to use, such as token/SOL.

Choose the pool type: Standard/CPMM or CLMM.

Decide the initial price and the amount of each asset to deposit.

Review the implied pool ratio and the assets required.

Check applicable network, protocol, and platform fees.

Connect a compatible Solana wallet to the supported interface.

Review the pool details, including token mints, pool type, initial price, deposit amounts, and any fees.

Approve the transaction in the wallet.

Confirm the resulting pool or liquidity position using the interface or an on-chain explorer.

Raydium’s pool-creation guidance separates CPMM and CLMM workflows. For a CPMM pool, the creator selects a pool type, enters both tokens, chooses a fee tier, sets an initial price and deposit, reviews the details, and signs. For CLMM, the creator also selects a lower and upper price range before entering a deposit.

Raydium CPMM pool-creation guide

Raydium CLMM pool-creation guide

Always verify the token mint addresses before signing. A wrong mint address, incorrect pool type, or misunderstood price setting can be costly.

How Much Liquidity Should a Token Creator Add?

There is no universal amount. The right amount depends on the project’s resources, goals, and risk tolerance.

Consider:

The amount of project tokens allocated to liquidity

The amount of SOL or another quote asset available

The intended initial pool price

The trade sizes users may attempt

The price impact those trades may create

The project’s ability to manage liquidity over time

Transaction, protocol, and platform costs

Market uncertainty and the risk of price movement

A larger deposit can reduce price impact for a given trade size, but it does not guarantee demand, trading volume, price stability, or a successful launch. Do not commit funds the project cannot afford to have exposed to market risk.

Slippage, Price Impact, and Impermanent Loss

These terms are related, but they are not the same.

  Slippage

Slippage is the difference between the result a trader expects and the result they receive when a transaction executes. It can occur when the market moves before the transaction is confirmed or when the trade is large relative to available liquidity.

A trader may set a slippage tolerance, but setting it too high can expose them to unfavorable execution.

  Price Impact

Price impact is the effect a trade has on the pool’s quoted price under its pricing mechanism. A larger trade relative to available liquidity generally creates more price impact.

For example, buying a small amount of a token from a deep pool may barely move the price. Buying a large amount from a thin pool can move the quoted price substantially.

  Impermanent Loss

Impermanent loss describes a potential relative outcome for a liquidity provider compared with simply holding the deposited assets. It can occur when the relative prices of the two assets change.

It is not a guaranteed loss. The provider may still receive trading fees, and the final result depends on the pool design, price movement, trade activity, fees, and when liquidity is withdrawn.

Raydium’s documentation notes that impermanent loss can grow as the prices of the two assets diverge, and that CLMM exposure can be amplified within a selected range.

Raydium pool-creation documentation

  Adding vs. Removing Liquidity

Adding liquidity means depositing assets into a pool. Removing liquidity means withdrawing part or all of an available position.

A creator might add liquidity to establish a trading market or increase available depth. Someone might remove liquidity to reduce exposure, reallocate capital, or close a position.

The assets received on withdrawal may differ from the amounts originally deposited. Pool balances and prices can change over time, and the withdrawal amount depends on the pool’s mechanics and the provider’s share or position.

In Raydium’s CPMM flow, a provider removes liquidity by selecting an LP-token amount or percentage and reviewing the estimated token amounts before signing. In CLMM, a provider can increase, decrease, or close a position; closing removes all liquidity and burns the position NFT.

Raydium add/remove liquidity documentation

Removing liquidity can affect the market. A large withdrawal may reduce available depth and increase price impact for remaining traders. The exact process, timing, and restrictions depend on the pool and protocol.

What Costs Are Involved in Solana Liquidity?

Liquidity operations can involve several types of costs.

Cost Type

What It Covers

Solana network fees

Transaction fees and, in some cases, priority fees

DEX or protocol fees

Fees charged by the decentralized exchange or protocol

Platform fees

Fees charged by a third-party interface or tool

Trading fees

Fees paid by traders on swaps; these may be distributed to liquidity providers depending on the pool design

Account or rent-related costs

Costs associated with creating or maintaining certain on-chain accounts

Solsmint advertises a 0% platform fee for adding or removing liquidity. That refers to Solsmint’s platform fee only. Solana network fees and DEX or protocol-related costs may still apply.

Solsmint liquidity page

Review the wallet transaction before signing. The final cost depends on the selected network, protocol, pool type, and operation.

  Common Liquidity Mistakes to Avoid

Depositing Without Understanding the Implied Price

Before adding liquidity, calculate what the selected deposit amounts imply for the token’s initial price. Do not assume the pool price will remain there.

  Confusing Liquidity With Market Capitalization

A pool holds tradable assets. Market capitalization is a valuation metric and can be calculated differently depending on the supply figure used.

Committing More Capital Than the Project Can Manage

Liquidity is exposed to market movement. Only allocate assets the project can reasonably manage over time.

  Ignoring Price Impact and Slippage

Test how a realistic trade size would affect the pool. A thin pool may produce significant price movement even for modest trades.

  Choosing CLMM Without Understanding Ranges

A CLMM position can become inactive if the market price moves outside the selected range. Understand the range, rebalancing needs, and fee mechanics before choosing this option.

Raydium CLMM overview

  Assuming Liquidity Creates Buyers

A pool enables swaps. It does not create organic demand, community interest, or trading volume.

  Misunderstanding the Position Type

Standard pools may use fungible LP tokens, while CLMM positions are commonly represented by NFTs. Check which asset represents your position before trying to manage or transfer it.

Raydium add/remove liquidity documentation

  Failing to Review the Transaction

Check token mints, pool type, deposit amounts, price settings, fee details, and wallet permissions before signing.

Treating a Pool as Proof of Legitimacy

A liquidity pool does not prove that a project is safe, legitimate, or likely to succeed. Review the token mint, distribution, project information, and risk factors separately.

How Solsmint Helps With Solana Liquidity

Solsmint provides a no-code liquidity workflow for users who want to create or manage liquidity for Solana tokens. Its liquidity page supports pool creation and includes Standard and CLMM options, with Raydium integration referenced in Solsmint’s product materials.

Solsmint liquidity page

Solsmint advertises a 0% platform fee for adding or removing liquidity. Solana network fees and DEX or protocol-related costs may still apply.

Before using any liquidity tool, confirm the supported pool types, token pair, fee settings, and transaction details in the current interface. Solsmint does not supply liquidity capital, guarantee trading activity, or determine a token’s market outcome.

  Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Liquidity Pool on Solana?

A liquidity pool is a reserve of two tokens that traders can swap against through a decentralized exchange. In a token/SOL pool, users can trade between the project token and SOL.

How Do I Create a Liquidity Pool for a Solana Token?

Create the SPL token, choose a supported trading pair and pool type, decide the initial price and deposit amounts, connect a compatible wallet, review the transaction, and approve it. The exact workflow depends on the protocol and pool type.

How Much Liquidity Does a New Token Need?

There is no fixed amount. Consider the project’s available assets, intended initial price, expected trade sizes, price impact, costs, and ability to manage the position over time.

What Is the Difference Between Standard and CLMM Pools?

A Standard or CPMM pool spreads liquidity across the full price curve and is generally simpler. A CLMM pool concentrates liquidity in a selected price range and may require active management.

Raydium pool-creation documentation

Can I Remove Liquidity After Adding It?

Usually, yes, but the process and conditions depend on the pool, protocol, and position type. In a CLMM pool, a provider may decrease or close a position; in a CPMM pool, the provider may redeem LP tokens.

Does Adding Liquidity Increase a Token’s Price?

No. Adding liquidity can reduce price impact for a given trade size, but it does not create demand or guarantee a higher token price.

What Fees Apply to Solana Liquidity Pools?

Solana network fees, DEX or protocol fees, and platform fees may apply. Solsmint advertises a 0% platform fee for adding or removing liquidity, but network and protocol costs may still apply.

Solsmint liquidity page

Can a Token Have Liquidity Without Trading Volume?

Yes. A pool can exist with deposited assets even if nobody trades. Liquidity does not guarantee trading volume or market interest.

  Conclusion

A Solana liquidity pool is part of a token’s trading infrastructure. It lets users swap between a project token and SOL, but it does not create demand, guarantee volume, or determine a project’s success.

Before creating or adding liquidity, understand the pool type, initial pricing, deposit ratio, price impact, slippage, fees, and withdrawal mechanics. Standard pools are generally simpler, while CLMM pools require an understanding of price ranges and active management.

To review Solsmint’s supported liquidity workflow, visit Solsmint liquidity tools. Always verify the current interface, token mints, pool settings, and transaction details before signing.

The mint account holds core token state, such as decimals, current minted supply, and certain authorities. Descriptive details—including a name, symbol, image, or description—come from a metadata system, and the exact setup depends on the token program and metadata standard.

Understanding that difference helps you choose compatible metadata, prepare accurate token information, and avoid common launch problems. This guide explains how Solana token metadata works, where it is stored, what may be changed after launch, and what to check before creating a token.

Note: Wallets, explorers, and other applications may display metadata differently. Their supported standards, indexing, and caching can affect what users see.

  What Is Solana Token Metadata?

Solana token metadata is descriptive information associated with a token, such as its name, symbol, or links to an image and description. It helps wallets, explorers, and applications identify and display an asset. The storage method depends on the token program and metadata standard.

Metadata does not replace the token’s mint address. The mint address is the token’s unique on-chain identifier. Names and symbols can be duplicated, so users should verify the mint address through a trusted project source.

What Information Does a Solana Token Contain?

Some token properties describe how the token works. Others help applications display it.

Field

What it means

Where it is generally represented

Why it matters

Name

Human-readable token name

Metadata, depending on the standard

Helps users recognize the asset

Symbol

Short ticker-like label

Metadata, depending on the standard

Helps interfaces display the token; symbols are not unique

Decimals

Precision for token amounts

Mint account

Determines how base units are displayed

Supply

Number of units minted so far

Mint account records current minted supply

Distinguishes minted supply from circulating or maximum supply

Description

Additional information about the asset

Often off-chain JSON, or a custom field where supported

Gives users context

Logo or image

Visual representation of the token

Image file referenced by metadata

Helps wallets and explorers display the asset

Metadata URI

Address pointing to metadata, often JSON

Metadata record or Token-2022 extension

Connects on-chain information with additional data

Update authority

Permission to change supported metadata

Relevant metadata system

Determines who may update metadata, when supported

A standard Solana mint account stores core state such as supply, decimals, Mint Authority, and Freeze Authority. It does not necessarily contain every descriptive field displayed by wallets. Solana’s mint-account documentation

Where Is Solana Token Metadata Stored?

There is no single metadata-storage format shared by every Solana token.

For a standard SPL token using Metaplex Token Metadata, the Metaplex program creates a separate metadata account associated with the mint. That account can hold fields such as a name and symbol, along with a URI pointing to off-chain JSON. Solana’s Metaplex metadata documentation

Token-2022 offers another option: its Token Metadata extension can store metadata fields directly on the mint. Its Metadata Pointer extension is separate; it identifies an account that stores metadata. Solana’s Token-2022 metadata documentation

A simplified example of a common Metaplex setup is:

Token mint
  → Metaplex metadata account
    → metadata URI
      → JSON document
→ image or other linked resources

This is an illustration, not a universal layout. With Token-2022’s Token Metadata extension, some fields can instead be stored directly on the mint.

  What is a metadata account?

In the Metaplex setup, the metadata account is a separate on-chain account linked to a token mint. It is a Program Derived Address (PDA): an address calculated from known inputs, including the mint address and metadata program. This gives applications a predictable way to locate metadata for a mint. Solana’s Metaplex metadata documentation

Name, Symbol, Decimals, and Supply Are Different

A token’s name and symbol help identify it in interfaces. Decimals and supply describe core token state.

Decimals specify how many fractional places a token supports. For example, a mint with six decimals can represent amounts down to one-millionth of a token. Decimals are configured as part of mint creation; they are not simply a cosmetic metadata field. Solana’s mint-account documentation

Supply is the number of token units minted so far. It differs from:

Circulating supply: an estimate of tokens available in the market, based on a provider’s methodology.

Maximum supply: a cap a project may define or enforce through its design.

Minted supply: the current supply recorded by the token mint.

A metadata update does not change a token’s decimals or minted supply.

How Do Logos, Descriptions, and Metadata URIs Work?

A metadata URI often points to a JSON document. That JSON can contain a description and an image URL. The image itself is a separate file; the metadata record points to it.

A wallet or explorer may retrieve the URI, read the JSON, and then attempt to load the image. A valid URI does not guarantee that every application will display the logo. The application may not support that metadata standard, may have cached older information, or may be unable to retrieve the JSON or image.

Before launch, check that:

The JSON is valid and publicly accessible.

The image URL loads without requiring a login.

The image format works for your intended applications.

The metadata URI points to the correct document.

The document’s fields match your intended token name and symbol.

The hosting method meets your availability requirements.

IPFS or Arweave may be used for hosting, but availability depends on how the content is stored and maintained. Do not assume a URI is permanent simply because it uses a particular storage network.

  Metaplex Metadata vs. Token-2022 Metadata

Approach

Where metadata is stored

Pointer or account relationship

What to check

Metaplex Token Metadata

In a separate metadata account associated with the mint; the account can contain a URI to off-chain JSON

A PDA links the metadata account to the mint

Client support, metadata mutability, and URI availability

Token-2022 Token Metadata extension

Metadata fields can be stored directly on the mint

The extension is part of the mint’s Token-2022 configuration

Token-2022 compatibility and extension configuration

Token-2022 Metadata Pointer

The pointer extension is on the mint; metadata may be stored at another account

Identifies the account that holds metadata

Whether clients recognize the pointer and referenced format

These approaches are not interchangeable in every application. Choose based on your token’s requirements and the wallets, explorers, exchanges, and other software your users are likely to use. Solana documents the Metadata Pointer and Token Metadata extensions as distinct mechanisms. Solana’s Token-2022 metadata documentation

Can You Change Solana Token Metadata After Launch?

Sometimes. It depends on where the metadata is stored, the metadata standard, whether the asset is mutable, and who controls the relevant update authority.

With Metaplex Token Metadata, the update authority can modify metadata while the account remains mutable. Token-2022’s Token Metadata extension has its own update-authority mechanism. The Metadata Pointer also has a separate authority for changing the pointer. Solana’s Metaplex metadata documentation Solana’s Token-2022 metadata documentation

Changes may take time to appear in wallets and explorers because applications index or cache data differently. Updating metadata does not change the token’s mint address.

Do not assume you can change a token’s name, symbol, image, or description after launch. Verify the specific standard and permissions before relying on future updates.

How to Prepare Token Metadata Before Creating a Token

Prepare your token information before approving the creation transaction:

Choose a clear name that is not easily confused with another project.

Select a concise symbol, remembering that symbols are not globally unique.

Decide on decimals and supply based on how the token will be used.

Prepare a suitable logo file.

Write an accurate, concise description.

Choose a metadata standard that fits your compatibility requirements.

Prepare valid JSON and accessible image resources if the standard uses off-chain metadata.

Decide who should control the relevant update authority.

Check which metadata settings your token creation tool supports.

Review the final configuration and wallet transaction before signing.

Verify the resulting token information in relevant explorers or applications.

Not every step applies identically to every metadata standard.

  Common Solana Token Metadata Mistakes

  Confusing decimals with supply

Decimals control precision; supply counts minted token units. Decide on both before creation.

Assuming the name and symbol are always stored in the mint

Their location depends on the metadata approach. Check the token program and standard.

  Using a broken image URI

Test the image and metadata URLs from a browser that is not logged into your hosting account.

  Providing malformed JSON

Validate the JSON and check that the fields match the format your intended applications support.

Expecting every explorer to update immediately

Indexers and wallets may cache metadata. Check more than one relevant interface and allow for indexing delays.

  Treating a symbol as unique

Unrelated tokens can use the same symbol. Share the mint address alongside the project name.

Confusing metadata Update Authority with Mint Authority

Update Authority controls supported metadata changes. Mint Authority authorizes token issuance.

  Assuming metadata is always editable

Update permissions depend on the metadata standard and the token’s current configuration.

  Assuming immutable metadata proves legitimacy

Immutable metadata can still describe a misleading or untrustworthy project. Verify the mint and assess the project separately.

How Solsmint Helps With Token Creation

Solsmint provides a no-code workflow for creating Solana SPL tokens. Depending on the current creation interface, users can configure supported token information such as name, symbol, supply, decimals, logo or metadata, and authority settings.

Available settings can change, so review the live interface before starting. Visit Solsmint’s token creation workflow to see the current options.

This article explains Solana metadata generally. It does not imply that Solsmint can edit metadata after launch, change metadata authorities, or perform other post-launch operations unless those capabilities are available in the current product interface.

  Frequently Asked Questions

  What is Solana token metadata?

Solana token metadata is descriptive information associated with a token, such as its name, symbol, image, or description. Its storage method depends on the token program and metadata standard.

Where are an SPL token’s name and symbol stored?

It depends on the metadata setup. Metaplex Token Metadata uses a separate account associated with the mint. Token-2022’s Token Metadata extension can store metadata directly on the mint. Solana’s Metaplex metadata documentation Solana’s Token-2022 metadata documentation

How do I add a logo to a Solana token?

Usually, the metadata record points to a JSON document that includes an image URL. The exact setup depends on the token’s metadata standard and creation tool. Test the JSON URI and image URL, then check how relevant wallets and explorers display them.

Can I change a Solana token’s name after launch?

Sometimes. It depends on the metadata standard, whether the metadata is mutable, and whether you control the required update authority. Confirm the token’s implementation before assuming an update is possible.

What is a token metadata URI?

A metadata URI is an address that points to metadata, often a JSON document with fields such as a description and image URL. Some Token-2022 configurations can store metadata fields directly on the mint.

What is the difference between token decimals and supply?

Decimals define how token amounts are divided into fractional units. Supply is the number of units minted. They are different properties of a token.

Does changing metadata change the token’s mint address?

No. A metadata update does not change the mint address, which uniquely identifies the token. It may change what supporting applications display.

What is the difference between Metaplex and Token-2022 metadata?

Metaplex commonly uses a separate metadata account linked to the mint. Token-2022 can store metadata directly on the mint with its Token Metadata extension, while its Metadata Pointer extension identifies an account containing metadata. Compatibility depends on the client and implementation.

  Conclusion

Solana token metadata helps wallets and applications describe an asset, but it is distinct from the mint account’s core state. Names, symbols, descriptions, and logos are descriptive information; decimals and minted supply are token properties; and the update authority determines who may change supported metadata.

Before launch, choose a metadata approach that fits your compatibility needs, prepare and test JSON and image resources where required, and understand who controls the update authority. To review Solsmint’s current no-code creation options, visit Solsmint’s token creation workflow.

A metadata Update Authority may be able to change token information, depending on the metadata program and asset settings.

These permissions are separate. Revoking one does not automatically revoke the others, make the entire token immutable, or prove that a project is trustworthy. Before changing an authority, identify which token program and metadata standard your token uses—and understand whether the change can be reversed.

Important: Setting an authority to
None
is generally permanent for that role under the applicable token program. Verify the token and metadata implementation before approving an authority-change transaction. Solana’s Set Authority documentation

  What Are Solana Token Authorities?

A token authority is a wallet address or other authorized account that can perform a specific action.

In the classic SPL Token program, a mint can have a Mint Authority and a Freeze Authority. Token accounts have an owner and may have a close authority. Token-2022 also supports additional authority roles for certain extensions. Solana’s Set Authority documentation

An authority is not general control over every aspect of a token. Each role grants specific permissions. For example, Mint Authority can authorize new token issuance; it does not automatically control metadata.

When reviewing a token, check its mint address, token program, authority settings, and metadata implementation. A token’s name or symbol alone does not reveal its permissions or prove that it is legitimate.

  Mint, Freeze, and Update Authority

Authority

What it controls

Why a project may retain it

Consider before revoking

Mint Authority

Authorizes additional token issuance under the applicable token program.

The project may need future rewards or planned distributions.

Revocation prevents future minting through that authority and is generally permanent.

Freeze Authority

Can freeze eligible token accounts under the applicable token program.

A project may have a specific operational or compliance need.

Revocation prevents future freezes by that authority, but does not automatically thaw frozen accounts.

Metadata Update Authority

Can modify permitted metadata fields when allowed by the relevant metadata program and asset settings.

The project may need to correct or update metadata.

Metadata rules vary. Removing authority or making metadata immutable may prevent future changes.

These are distinct permissions. Mint and Freeze Authority relate to the token program, while metadata permissions are governed by the relevant metadata system. Solana’s Set Authority documentation Metaplex’s Token Metadata documentation

What Is Mint Authority on Solana?

Mint Authority is the permission to create additional units of a token. Under Solana’s token programs, only the Mint Authority can authorize new tokens, and minting increases the mint’s total supply. Solana’s Mint Tokens documentation

A project might retain this authority to distribute planned rewards over time. That flexibility also means the supply can increase, so the project should explain who controls the authority and why it remains active.

If a project intends to issue no more tokens, it may consider revoking Mint Authority after confirming that all planned supply and distributions are accounted for.

What happens when Mint Authority is revoked?

Setting Mint Authority to
None
prevents that authority from authorizing future token issuance. Existing tokens remain in their holders’ accounts; revocation does not burn or remove them. Solana’s
SetAuthority
instruction can set a selected authority to
None
, permanently removing that role. Solana’s Set Authority documentation

For example, after creating its intended supply, a project might revoke Mint Authority to prevent future minting through that role. It would then be unable to use that authority to issue additional rewards later.

Revoking Mint Authority does not make the whole token immutable or automatically trustworthy. Other authorities, metadata settings, Token-2022 extensions, and project-level controls may still matter.

What Is Freeze Authority on Solana?

Freeze Authority can freeze eligible token accounts for a particular mint. A frozen account cannot receive, transfer, or burn tokens until it is thawed. Solana’s Freeze Account documentation

This is an account-level control, not a way to freeze every token on Solana. The authority applies to accounts associated with the relevant mint and token program.

A project should retain Freeze Authority only when it has a clear reason and communicates that permission to users. Holders should understand who controls it and how it could be used.

What happens when Freeze Authority is revoked?

Revoking Freeze Authority prevents that authority from freezing additional accounts for the mint. It does not automatically unfreeze accounts that were already frozen. Solana’s Freeze Account documentation

If accounts are already frozen, understand the relevant thawing process before revoking the authority. Removing the permission does not necessarily reverse an account’s existing state.

  What Is Update Authority?

Update Authority is a metadata permission, not the classic SPL Token program’s Mint Authority or Freeze Authority. Its exact scope depends on the metadata program, token standard, and asset configuration.

For example, Metaplex Token Metadata allows an asset’s Update Authority to update metadata when the asset is mutable. The permitted changes depend on the implementation and asset settings. Metaplex’s guide to updating Token Metadata

Metadata may include a name, symbol, URI, or other asset information. Updating metadata does not itself mint or burn tokens and does not change token supply.

Before changing or relinquishing metadata authority, identify the metadata standard and confirm whether the asset is mutable. Not every Solana token uses the same metadata mechanism.

  Revoke, Transfer, or Retain?

These are different choices:

Retain an authority: Keep the current permission active.

Transfer an authority: Assign the permission to a different address, if supported by the relevant program.

Revoke an authority: Remove the permission, typically by setting it to
None
.

Transferring an authority changes who controls the permission; it does not remove the permission itself. A project might use a controlled wallet or multisig, but the authority still exists.

For classic SPL Token and Token-2022, authority changes use the Token Program’s
SetAuthority
instruction. Each change applies to a particular authority role on a mint or token account, and the current authority must approve the transaction. Solana’s Set Authority documentation

Can a revoked authority be restored?

Generally, when an authority is set to
None
, the former authority holder cannot simply restore it under that token program’s authority model. Verify the relevant program and transaction before signing. Metadata systems may have different rules, so do not assume they behave exactly like Mint or Freeze Authority.

Should You Revoke Solana Token Authorities?

There is no single configuration that fits every project. The decision depends on the token’s purpose, operating model, holder expectations, and the specific program features in use.

Before retaining, transferring, or revoking an authority, ask:

Is the mint using classic SPL Token or Token-2022?

Which permission are you changing?

Does the project have a documented need to retain it?

Who controls the current authority wallet?

Would transferring it to another controlled address meet the need?

What becomes impossible if the authority is removed?

Are any token accounts already frozen?

Which metadata program or standard is in use?

Have you verified the mint address and transaction details?

Have you explained the decision to users?

If a change is irreversible, review its consequences carefully. Where possible, test the workflow and ask another trusted person to verify the transaction before signing.

  Common Mistakes to Avoid

Confusing Mint Authority with Update Authority

Mint Authority controls token issuance. Update Authority concerns metadata under a separate system. Revoking one does not necessarily affect the other.

Assuming fixed supply makes everything immutable

Revoking Mint Authority prevents future minting through that role. It does not necessarily make metadata immutable or remove every other permission.

  Assuming revocation proves trustworthiness

Revocation changes a specific technical permission. It does not verify a team, guarantee fair distribution, or eliminate all project risks.

Assuming Freeze Authority revocation unfreezes accounts

Revoking Freeze Authority prevents future freezes through that authority. Accounts already frozen may still require a separate thaw action. Solana’s Freeze Account documentation

  Ignoring token-program and metadata differences

Classic SPL Token, Token-2022, and metadata programs can have different features and authority behavior. Check the documentation for the implementation your token uses.

  How Solsmint Fits In

Solsmint is a no-code Solana SPL token creation and management platform. Its supported areas include token creation, minting, burning, airdrops, liquidity, NFT creation, token management, and token research.

If you are preparing a token, review the settings available in the Solsmint token creation workflow before launch. This article explains authority concepts for education; it does not claim that Solsmint supports post-launch authority revocation, authority transfer, metadata updates, or unfreezing accounts.

For related workflows, see minting tokens, burning tokens, and the Solsmint FAQ.

  Frequently Asked Questions

  What are Solana token authorities?

Solana token authorities are accounts authorized to perform specific actions, such as minting tokens, freezing token accounts, or updating metadata under a separate metadata standard.

  What does Mint Authority control?

Mint Authority authorizes the creation of additional token units under the applicable token program. Revoking it prevents future minting through that authority. Solana’s Mint Tokens documentation

  What does Freeze Authority control?

Freeze Authority can freeze eligible token accounts for a mint. A frozen account cannot receive, transfer, or burn tokens until it is thawed. Solana’s Freeze Account documentation

  What is Solana Update Authority?

Update Authority is a metadata permission defined by the relevant metadata program or asset standard. It may allow metadata changes when the asset is mutable. Metaplex’s Token Metadata documentation

Does revoking Mint Authority burn the remaining supply?

No. Revoking Mint Authority prevents future minting through that role; it does not remove tokens that have already been created.

Does revoking Freeze Authority unfreeze existing accounts?

No. Revocation prevents future freezes through that authority. Existing frozen accounts may need to be thawed separately. Solana’s Freeze Account documentation

Can a revoked Solana authority be restored?

Generally, an authority set to
None
cannot simply be restored by its former holder under the relevant token program. Verify the program and metadata standard before making changes. Solana’s Set Authority documentation

Does revoking authorities make a token safe?

No. Revocation removes specific permissions but does not guarantee security, project legitimacy, fair distribution, or trustworthy behavior.

  Conclusion

Mint Authority, Freeze Authority, and metadata Update Authority control different permissions. Mint Authority affects future supply, Freeze Authority affects eligible token accounts, and Update Authority concerns metadata under the applicable metadata system.

Before making changes, identify the token program and metadata standard, understand whether the action is reversible, and verify the mint address and transaction. Revocation can remove a permission, but it is not a substitute for broader security and project due diligence.

If you are creating a Solana token, review its authority settings as part of your launch plan—not as an afterthought.

Creating a token on Solana is more accessible than many beginners expect. You can build an SPL token by configuring a token mint, choosing the supply and decimals, reviewing authority settings, adding metadata, and approving an on-chain transaction.

You can create a Solana token manually with developer tools or use a no-code Solana token creator such as Solsmint. The right approach depends on your technical experience, the level of control you need, and whether you want to manage the token after deployment.

This guide explains how Solana tokens work, what to decide before creating one, how token supply and authorities affect your project, and how a no-code workflow can simplify Solana token creation.

Disclaimer: This article is for educational purposes only. It is not financial, investment, legal, or technical advice. Creating a token does not guarantee demand, liquidity, adoption, or value. Always verify transaction details and conduct your own research.

  What Is a Solana Token?

A Solana token is a digital asset created on the Solana blockchain. Most fungible Solana tokens use the SPL Token standard, while NFTs and other assets can use related Solana token programs.

A Solana token is defined by a mint account. The mint stores important information such as:

Token decimals

Current supply

Mint Authority

Freeze Authority

Token-program configuration

Individual holders do not usually hold balances directly in the mint account. Instead, each holder uses a token account associated with the specific mint and wallet address.

  What Is an SPL Token?

SPL stands for Solana Program Library. In everyday usage, an SPL token is a token created using Solana’s token infrastructure.

SPL tokens can represent:

Community currencies

Utility tokens

Governance assets

Reward points

Gaming assets

Memecoins

NFT-related assets

Project or application tokens

The term SPL token creation usually refers to creating and configuring the token mint, then minting an initial supply to one or more token accounts.

  How Solana Tokens Work

A Solana token uses several connected components.

  Token mint

The mint account defines the token itself. It stores the token’s decimals, supply, and authority settings.

  Token account

A token account records how many units of a specific token a wallet owns. A wallet can have separate token accounts for different mints.

  Associated Token Account

An Associated Token Account, or ATA, is a standard token account linked to a wallet and a specific mint. It gives applications a predictable way to locate a holder’s balance.

  Token program

The Token Program processes instructions such as:

Creating a mint

Creating token accounts

Minting tokens

Transferring tokens

Burning tokens

Freezing accounts

Thawing accounts

Changing authorities

Solana also supports Token-2022, which adds extensions for specific use cases. The appropriate token program depends on the features and compatibility your project requires.

Why Does Solana Token Creation Matter?

Solana token creation matters because the network provides a high-throughput environment for applications that need frequent transactions and low-cost user interactions.

A token can help a project coordinate:

Community participation

Access to digital products

Rewards and incentives

Governance

In-game economies

Membership systems

NFT ecosystems

DeFi applications

However, creating a token is only a technical step. A token does not automatically create utility, community demand, or a sustainable project.

Before deployment, answer three basic questions:

What does the token do?

Who is expected to use it?

Why does it need to exist on Solana?

If the answers are unclear, the token design probably needs more work.

  Important Token Settings

The most important decisions in Solana token creation involve supply, decimals, and authorities.

  Token name

The token name is the full human-readable name, such as
Creator Community Token
.

Choose a name that is:

Distinctive

Easy to understand

Consistent with your project

Unlikely to be confused with another token

  Token symbol

The symbol is the short identifier displayed by wallets and explorers. It is often three to six characters, although formats can vary.

Avoid copying an existing project’s symbol. Confusion can lead users to interact with the wrong mint address.

  Token supply

The supply is the number of token units created or intended for circulation.

You should decide whether your project needs:

A fixed initial supply

Additional minting over time

A burn mechanism

A treasury allocation

A community allocation

An airdrop allocation

A liquidity allocation

Supply alone does not determine value. What matters is how the supply is controlled, distributed, and explained.

  Token decimals

Decimals define how divisible each token unit is.

For example, a token with six decimals can represent fractions down to
0.000001
token units. A token with zero decimals can only use whole units, which may be appropriate for some NFTs or collectible-style assets.

Decimals are a technical setting, not a measure of quality. Choose them based on how the token will be used and how applications need to display balances.

  Mint Authority Explained

The Mint Authority is the address authorized to create new units of a Solana token.

If the Mint Authority remains active:

New tokens can be minted later

The total supply can increase

The authority holder must be trusted or transparently controlled

Users should understand the potential supply expansion

If the Mint Authority is removed, no new tokens can be minted through that authority. Solana documentation identifies the Mint Authority as the authority allowed to create additional units of a token.

  Fixed supply vs. mintable supply

A fixed-supply token may be easier for users to understand because the maximum supply cannot increase through the original Mint Authority.

A mintable token can be useful when a project needs:

Ongoing rewards

Seasonal distributions

Growing user incentives

In-game issuance

Flexible treasury management

Neither model is automatically better. The decision depends on the project’s purpose and transparency.

  Freeze Authority Explained

The Freeze Authority can freeze individual token accounts. A frozen account may be unable to transfer, burn, or change certain token-account settings until it is thawed.

A Freeze Authority may be used for:

Compliance workflows

Security response

Recovering from a known incident

Controlled testing

Specific application requirements

It can also create trust concerns if users do not know that the authority exists.

Before launch, clearly disclose:

Whether a Freeze Authority exists

Who controls it

Why it exists

Under what conditions it may be used

Whether it can be revoked

Do not describe a token as trustless or fully decentralized if an authority can still restrict holder accounts.

  Token Metadata

Token metadata adds human-readable information to an otherwise technical token mint.

Metadata may include:

Token name

Symbol

Description

Image

Website

Social links

Creator information

A token can exist without rich metadata, but wallets and applications usually provide a better user experience when the token has recognizable information.

Metadata does not prove legitimacy. A malicious or unrelated token can copy another project’s name, image, or symbol. Users should always verify the token mint address through official channels.

  Metadata checklist

Before publishing metadata, check:

Spelling of the token name

Correct symbol

Logo dimensions and quality

Official website URL

Social-media links

Project description

Token mint address

Consistency across explorers and wallets

How to Create a Solana Token

There are two main approaches to Solana token creation.

  Developer workflow

Developers can use Solana tools and libraries to:

Create a wallet and fund the fee payer

Create a mint account

Configure decimals

Set the Mint Authority

Set or omit the Freeze Authority

Create token accounts

Mint the initial supply

Add metadata

Verify the mint and balances

Manage authorities and distributions

This approach provides control but requires technical knowledge, careful transaction handling, and familiarity with Solana programs.

  No-code workflow

A no-code Solana token creator provides a guided interface for users who do not want to write code manually.

A typical flow includes:

Connect a compatible Solana wallet

Enter token information

Configure supply and decimals

Review available authority settings

Confirm the transaction

Receive the on-chain token mint

Manage or distribute the token

No-code does not mean risk-free. Users still need to understand the settings they approve and verify the transaction before signing.

What to Prepare Before a Solana Token Launch

A smooth Solana token launch starts before the creation transaction.

  Define the purpose

Write one clear sentence explaining what the token is for. Avoid vague descriptions that rely only on hype.

  Plan the supply

Document:

Initial supply

Planned allocations

Treasury share

Team or contributor allocation

Community distribution

Liquidity allocation

Future minting policy

  Secure the wallet

Use a wallet dedicated to the project where appropriate. Protect seed phrases and never share private keys through support chats, forms, or social media.

  Prepare the metadata

Create the logo, description, website, and social links before deployment. Review every field for accuracy.

  Decide authority settings

Determine whether the token needs a Mint Authority or Freeze Authority. Explain the decision publicly if the token will be distributed to other users.

  Plan distribution

Airdrops and transfers require a clean list of wallet addresses. Remove duplicates, verify addresses, and test with a small distribution first.

  Consider liquidity

If you intend to create a market for the token, understand the requirements and risks of liquidity pools. Adding liquidity does not guarantee trading volume or price stability.

  Common Mistakes to Avoid

Confusing the token name with the mint address

Names and symbols can be copied. The mint address is the technical identifier users should verify.

Choosing decimals without a use case

Decimals affect how balances are represented. Select them deliberately rather than copying settings from another project.

  Ignoring Mint Authority

If the Mint Authority remains active, additional supply may be created. Make this clear to users.

  Forgetting Freeze Authority

A Freeze Authority can affect account transfers. Disclose its existence and purpose.

  Minting the wrong supply

Review the supply and decimals together. A mistake can produce a much larger or smaller amount than intended.

  Uploading incorrect metadata

A wrong image, social link, or website address can create confusion after deployment.

  Publishing the wrong mint address

Always copy the address directly from a trusted explorer or deployment record. Do not rely on screenshots or manually typed addresses.

  Testing only after launch

Test the workflow with a small amount or a non-production environment where possible. It is easier to fix a process before the public launch.

  Treating speed as strategy

Fast token creation does not replace tokenomics, documentation, community management, or security planning.

  How Solsmint Helps

Solsmint is a no-code Solana token creation and management platform for users who want to work with Solana SPL tokens through guided interfaces.

Its supported workflows include:

Solana SPL token creation

Token management

Minting

Burning

Airdrops

Liquidity

NFT creation

Rug checking and token research

The relevant workflow depends on what you are trying to do. Someone creating a new token may use the Solana token creation page, while someone managing an existing token may need the Solsmint dashboard.

A typical token creation flow is:

Open the Solsmint token creation interface.

Connect a compatible Solana wallet.

Enter the token name and symbol.

Set the supply and decimals.

Review the available configuration.

Check authority and metadata details where shown.

Approve the transaction in your wallet.

Save the resulting token mint address.

Use relevant management tools after deployment.

The interface simplifies the process, but the responsibility for reviewing settings remains with the creator.

Useful Solsmint tools include:

Create a token

Mint tokens

Burn Solana tokens

Run an airdrop

Explore liquidity tools

Create an NFT

Check a token or project

Introduction
Launching a crypto token no longer requires coding skills or complicated commands. With Solsmint, you can mint a Solana-based SPL token in just a few clicks — secure, fast, and affordable at only 0.05 SOL.

In the past, token creation was limited to developers who could navigate complex blockchain tools. Today, that barrier is gone. Solsmint makes token creation accessible to everyone, whether you’re a startup founder, community builder, or simply experimenting with Web3.

Why Solana?

The Solana blockchain is designed for speed and scalability, making it an ideal foundation for launching tokens. With near-zero transaction costs and high throughput, Solana allows you to:

Launch meme coins or community tokens

Build tokens for DeFi or gaming projects

Create brand tokens for businesses

Distribute loyalty rewards or incentives
From side projects to serious ventures, Solana ensures your token can grow within a vibrant ecosystem.

What is Solsmint?

Solsmint is a no-code Solana token creator. Instead of running the manual spl-token create-token command, you can generate tokens through a simple interface.

With Solsmint, you can:

Define your token’s name, symbol, and supply

Adjust parameters like decimals, mint authority, or freeze authority

Upload a logo for branding

Complete the process for only 0.05 SOL
The result: your token is live on Solana in minutes — beginner-friendly, secure, and fully customizable.

How It Works

The process is straightforward:

Go to Solsmint.com

Connect your wallet (Phantom, Solflare, or Torus)

Enter your token details and confirm the transaction

That’s it — your token is ready to use across the Solana ecosystem.

Why Choose Solsmint?

Here’s what makes Solsmint a preferred choice for token creators:

By removing technical barriers, Solsmint helps anyone bring their token ideas to life.

Use Cases

Tokens built with Solsmint can serve multiple purposes:

Meme Coins → Fun, viral tokens for online communities
