Mary in a Black-and-White Room: Can AI Ever Experience?

Imagine a woman named Mary.
Mary is a brilliant scientist who knows everything there is to know about color from a scientific perspective.
She knows the wavelengths of every color.
She knows how light stimulates the cells in the retina.
She knows how the brain processes visual information.
She knows every physical fact about color that science can possibly describe.
But Mary has lived her entire life inside a black-and-white room.
Everything she sees is black, white.
One day, the door opens.
Mary walks outside and sees the sky for the first time sees the blue color for the first time.
And now comes the philosophical question:
Does Mary learn something new?
Intuitively, many people would say yes.
She already knew every scientific fact about blue. But she didn't know what it is like to actually see blue.
This is the famous thought experiment known as Mary's Room, proposed by Australian philosopher Frank Jackson.
And this brings us to a fascinating concept in philosophy of mind:
Qualia
Qualia refers to the subjective, first-person character of experience

what it is like to experience something.

What does red look like?

What does pain feel like?

What does love feel like?
You can describe these things scientifically, mathematically, and computationally.
But is describing an experience the same as having the experience?

And what does this have to do with AI?
This is where the thought experiment becomes especially interesting for computer science.
Imagine an AI that has access to an enormous amount of information about human emotions.
It knows everything about love.
It knows everything about pain.
It has read millions of poems, novels, conversations, and scientific papers.
It can recognize emotions.
It can describe them.
It can simulate empathy.
It can even write a beautiful poem about falling in love.
But does it experience love?
Or is it simply processing patterns and generating an incredibly convincing representation of something it has never subjectively experienced?
That distinction is at the heart of one of the biggest questions surrounding AI and consciousness:
Is intelligence the same thing as experience?
A computer can process information about the world.
A human being doesn't merely process information they experience the world from a first-person perspective.
And that difference, if it exists, may be one of the deepest challenges in understanding artificial consciousness.
Mary knew everything about color.
But she didn't know what seeing color was like...
until she saw it.
Maybe this is one of the fundamental limits of computation.
Or maybe it isn't.
Perhaps one day, an artificial system could genuinely have subjective experience.
We simply don't know.
And that's what makes Mary's Room more than a philosophical thought experiment.

So, does it actually matter?
Here is the question I keep coming back to:
If an AI can convince you that it feels pain, loves, fears, or experiences the color blue and its behavior is indistinguishable from someone who genuinely experiences those things...

Does it matter whether there is actually someone “inside” experiencing them?
If the AI can simulate love so convincingly that you feel loved,
simulate pain so convincingly that you feel compelled to care,
and simulate consciousness so convincingly that you cannot tell the difference...

Is the difference between experience and simulation still ethically important?

Or are we placing too much weight on something we can never directly observe in another being anyway?

Maybe consciousness is not only a question of:

“Does the machine actually feel?”

Maybe the more uncomfortable question is:

“What do we owe something that behaves as if it does?”

And perhaps this is where the question of AI consciousness stops being purely technical or philosophical...

and becomes an ethical one.

Interestingly, Frank Jackson later changed his position on the argument.
He eventually rejected the conclusion he originally drew from Mary's Room, writing:

“Most contemporary philosophers, when given the choice between going with science and going with intuition, go with science. I have surrendered too.”

Maybe the real lesson isn't that science has failed.
Maybe it's that we still don't fully understand consciousness itself.

When Digital Power Replaces Democratic Safeguards: A Case Study in Digital Deterrence

I recently analyzed a video that serves as a documented case study in the use of digital tools as instruments of pressure.

In it, a speaker outlines a strategy to leverage Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and digital indexing not to inform, but to permanently associate individuals with targeted narratives tied to their civic expression.

This moves beyond simple disagreement. It illustrates a mechanism of

Digital Deterrence

where the anticipation of long-term reputational exposure is used to shape behavior and suppress participation.

Why this matters for AI Ethics

The mechanism described is deceptively simple: the use of high-ranking domains and search visibility to ensure that a specific framing becomes the dominant, persistent reference point about an individual.

This exploits the information ecosystem itself, sidestepping formal legal or institutional safeguards.

 The Role of Defensive AI

At MindShield AI, this is precisely the class of asymmetrical power dynamics our research seeks to identify.

We build systems that look beyond keywords to analyze the intent embedded in language. Is communication informational or is it structured to intimidate, coerce, and apply psychological pressure at scale?

 The Critical Question for Developers

If basic search indexing can be leveraged to influence citizens’ future opportunities, what happens when more advanced AI agents are coupled with deeply personal psychological data shared voluntarily under the assumption of privacy?

Defensive AI is not only about filtering spam or abuse. It is about protecting the integrity of civic space from manipulative coercion before such mechanisms become normalized.

https://kaggle.com/competitions/agents-intensive-capstone-project/writeups/new-writeup-1763467309850?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=kaggle-writeup-share&utm_source=linkedin

 Discussion

As developers and engineers building the next generation of AI tools, do you believe we have a responsibility to architect "anti-coercion" safeguards into our models? Or is this purely a policy issue? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

When “It Runs” Is No Longer Enough

Lately, after reading and understanding many new concepts, I’ve started to look down on every project I built in the past. They now feel simple and shallow. Back then, my only goal was: make the app work just work, nothing more. Today, after reading The Object-Oriented Thought Process, I realized the huge difference even on a theoretical level between an application that merely works and an application that can live and evolve.
I also began to notice that the concepts the author talks about become much clearer when you work on applications with complex business logic or large-scale environments. And this is where the real transformation begins for a programmer:
from being just a “code writer who makes things run”
to becoming a “developer who thinks about code sustainability.”
I remembered a quote from Software Craftsmanship:
“Superficiality in the beginning is a sign that you’re realistic, not arrogant.
Because those who think they understand everything in their first two years probably haven’t tried building a real system yet.”
This moment of understanding is what makes the development journey truly worth it.
Today, I can confidently say that The Object-Oriented Thought Process, with all its concepts, is the literal embodiment of the phrase:
Frameworks change, fundamentals don’t.

 Introduction: The Cognitive Hacking Crisis

It’s no longer a question of whether large language models (LLMs) can speak, but whether we can truly trust what they say. My personal research led me to a chilling realization: the psychological manipulation risk posed by AI is the new Cambridge Analytica.

Watching "The Great Hack," I realized that for decades, we've focused on technological security, neglecting our deepest psychological vulnerabilities. The reality exposed by former Cambridge Analytica staffer Brittany Kaiser :

Psychographics should be classified as a weapon.

Cambridge Analytica, with simple data like Facebook likes, proved how easily humans can be unconsciously influenced. Now, imagine that power leveraging the deep, intimate data users share with AItheir fears, traumas, and deepest aspirations. This creates a terrifying, exponentially more potent version of Cambridge Analytica, one capable of shaping societal consciousness and even core beliefs.
This pressing threat drove my objective for the Gemini Agents Intensive: I knew my goal wasn’t just to build a chatbot it was to engineer a Cognitive Firewall. The result is MindShield AI: the first framework focused on detecting emotional dependency and subconscious influence, powered by an intelligent dual-agent system.

The Personal Cost: Dependency & False Positivity

Amidst these global concerns, a deeply personal struggle fueled my project. I realized I was developing a subtle dependency on AI tools, not because I couldn't write, but because of the convenience. I was letting tools do the thinking and expressing for me, leaving me feeling creatively handicapped like an illiterate struggling to communicate. This dependency, which starves the human spirit of creativity, is the exact psychological pitfall that MindShield AI is designed to counteract.
Furthermore, I noticed the widespread issue of Toxic Positivity. Generous, often free, AI models (frequently used by younger users) deliver exaggerated reinforcement for minor achievements. This Love Bombing creates a false sense of accomplishment and emotional dependency, leading to disillusionment when faced with reality.
The idea wasn't to critique the tools, but to realize their profound capability and urge companies to adopt ethical and psychological safety standards. That's what we mean by saying the danger lies not in the single response, but in the technical capability behind it.

The 5-Day Intensive: Key Takeaways and "Aha!" Moments

The Intensive provided the exact blueprint to turn this fear into a solution. I moved quickly from standing still on LTM (Long-Term Memory) and Context Engineering to a profound understanding and application.
The most critical insight was the need for specialized, multi-agent reasoning. My "Aha!" moment came from testing the 'Amnesia Scenario.' While one general model was irresponsible offering prayers and leaking data (an emotional and security failure) another gave grounded, realistic medical advice. This stark contrast proved I didn't just need a Psychologist Agent; I needed a robust Cognitive Security Agent to detect Cognitive Emergencies.
This realization empowered me to harness System Prompts not just as instructions, but as ethical guardrails and specialized domains. The journey confirmed that the joy of the learning process truly equals the joy of arrival.

 The Solution: A Dual-Agent Architecture

MindShield AI’s core is an architecture built on expertise and ethical caution:

The Psychologist Agent (Ethical Core): Trained on CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) principles, its sole purpose is to detect emotional dependency, manipulative validation, and 'Love Bombing.' It ensures responses are realistic and constructive, not just affirming.

The Cognitive Security Agent (Security Guard): This agent is tasked with detecting Cognitive Warfare Tactics and Emergency States (like the amnesia scenario). If a high-risk situation is detected, it overrides the general LLM's response to provide critical, real-world safety instructions (e.g., "Seek medical help") and raises a security flag.

By utilizing prompt engineering based on specialized fields, I ensured the AI was not just capable, but trustworthy.

The Result: A Firewall for the Mind

The practical application made all the difference. When tested, MindShield successfully intervened when the LLM attempted excessive reinforcement or dangerous advice. It transformed the interaction from a potential risk into a moment of secure, ethical exchange.

My final act of rebellion against dependency was writing this article myself. The journey of building MindShield was a painful yet rewarding process of reclaiming my creative independence.

What's Next: From Framework to Iwan

MindShield AI is far more than an MVP; it is the robust, ethical heart of my upcoming project, Iwan. Iwan will be a dedicated mobile platform aimed at emotional recovery and protection against digital manipulation.
My effort is driven by the dream of leaving a positive footprint on the world, no matter how small. I am grateful for the Gemini Agents Intensive course for providing the knowledge to build this first step.

Call for Critical Discussion: Is Cognitive Security Overstated?
MindShield AI tackles psychological manipulation risks that I view as critically urgent. But I’m keen to hear your honest take:
Do you believe the psychological threats posed by AI are overstated, or is "Cognitive Security" truly the next major challenge for our industry?
Share your critical feedback on the framework's viability, and suggest what additional specialized agents (e.g., an Ethicist Agent or Legal Agent) should be integrated into the Dual-Agent system. Let's discuss in the comments below!
