Short answer: submit your startup to free launch boards, startup directories, and the communities where your customers already hang out. Do all three in the same week, because each one sends a different kind of visitor.

If you have just built something and nobody knows it exists, this is the list of places to start. It costs nothing but time.

Where can you submit your startup for free?

There are three groups, and they work differently.

Launch boards. A launch board is a site where makers list a new product and visitors browse and vote. You get a page for your product and a short burst of attention.

Startup directories. These are listings, like a phone book for startups. Traffic is slower, but a listing tends to stay up and can be found by search later.

Communities. Forums, subreddits, Slack and Discord groups, and newsletters for makers. They send the most engaged visitors, but you must follow each group's self-promotion rules.

What is the difference between a launch board and a directory?

A launch board is about timing. People vote, a ranking moves, and new listings get a boost. A directory is about being findable. Both are free to submit to in most cases, so do both. If you can only do one first, start with a launch board, because you can get real reactions within days.

How do you submit to a launch board?

The steps are similar on most boards:

Create a free account.

Add your product's name, a one-line description, and a link.

Add a screenshot or logo if the form asks for one.

Complete the board's verification step. Some boards ask you to add a badge to your site.

Share your listing page with people who might actually use it.

One example is StartupWiki's launch board. I build it, so weigh that. On that board, a submission verifies a "Featured on StartupWiki" badge on your product's site, gets its own page, and stays on the board ranked by community upvotes, with a boost for the most recent launches. Check each board's own rules before you submit, since they differ.

What should you write in your listing?

Most people lose votes at this step. Keep it simple:

Name: the real name, no extra keywords.

One-liner: who it is for and what it does, in plain words. "A budgeting app for freelancers" beats "The future of finance."

Description: two or three sentences, the problem first, then how you solve it.

Link: send people to a page where they can try the product, not a blank homepage.

How do you get people to look at your listing?

A listing does not promote itself. Within the first day:

Message ten people who have the problem you solve and ask what they think.

Share the link where you already take part, and say it is yours.

Reply to every comment and question.

You do not need hundreds of votes. A few real users who give you feedback are worth more than a big number.

 What mistakes should you avoid?

Submitting everywhere on one day with the same text. Rewrite it a little for each site.

Ignoring site rules, especially on communities.

Paying for a listing before you know a free one works for you.

Not tracking where visitors come from. Add a simple tag to your links so you know which site worked.

How long does it take to see results?

Expect days for a launch board and weeks for directories. Treat the first month as a test. Note which places sent real visitors and do more of that.

Which free option fits your kind of startup?

A software product or app: launch boards and maker communities first. People there like trying new tools and will tell you what is broken.

A service or agency: directories and niche communities. Buyers search for you by name or category, so a findable listing matters more than a vote count.

A physical product: local directories, relevant subreddits, and newsletters in your category. Launch boards are fine for press and feedback, but your buyers may be elsewhere.

A research or content site: communities and newsletters, plus a launch board listing to get a first wave of readers.

Pick the group that matches where your first customers already spend time, then add the rest as you have capacity.

What should you have ready before you submit?

Do this once and every submission gets faster. Keep a short text file with your name, one-liner, a two-sentence description, your logo, two screenshots, and a contact email. Add a clear page on your site that explains what you do and how to try it. If a board or directory asks for a badge or a verification step, set that up first so you are not scrambling after you submit.

 FAQ

Where can I submit my startup for free?

Free launch boards, free startup directories, and maker communities. Use all three groups in one week.

Do I need to pay to get listed?

No. Most boards and directories have a free option. Paid options mostly buy speed or visibility, and you can decide on those later.

 What is a launch board?

A site where makers list new products and visitors browse, vote, and discover them. Listings are ranked by votes, often with a boost for recent launches.

How many places should I submit to?

Start with five to ten. Quality of the listing matters more than the number of sites.

How soon will I get users?

Some visitors can show up in days. Steady traffic from directories and search usually takes weeks.
