RainGuard AI - Go Outside Before the Rain Does

This is my submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle.

 What I Built

RainGuard AI — Go Outside Before the Rain Does is an open-source, AI-powered preventive maintenance assistant designed for housing societies.

Heavy rainfall can expose clogged drains, waterlogging, and other maintenance problems. RainGuard AI helps maintenance teams identify potential risks before the rain arrives and turn them into actionable field-inspection tasks.

GitHub Repository: https://github.com/srikrishik/rainguard-ai

 How It Works

Assess rainfall-related risks using available forecast and society information.

Prioritize assets that may need attention.

Generate practical field-inspection checklists.

Capture photos and findings during inspections.

Use AI-assisted analysis to help identify issues and suggest preventive actions.

Track maintenance tasks and follow-up inspections.

 How I Built It

RainGuard AI combines FastAPI, a JavaScript frontend, MongoDB Atlas, and hosted Gemma multimodal AI.

The backend manages application logic and inspection workflows, while the frontend provides the interface for maintenance teams. Gemma helps analyze inspection evidence and generate useful recommendations.

The project is open source, and the repository documents its implementation.

 Why Open Innovation Matters

Preventive maintenance tools should not be limited to organizations with large budgets or specialized technical teams.

Open-source AI makes it possible for independent developers to experiment with practical solutions to everyday infrastructure problems. RainGuard AI explores how these technologies can help housing societies move from reactive repairs toward preventive action.

 My First User

I am looking for housing society managers and maintenance teams willing to try RainGuard AI and share feedback. My next goal is to test it with a real society and learn what features would provide the most value.

 Prize Categories

 Best Use of Gemma

RainGuard AI uses Google's Gemma multimodal AI through a hosted inference service to help analyze field-inspection evidence and generate preventive maintenance recommendations for housing societies.

 Best Use of Temporal

RainGuard AI incorporates Temporal durable workflows to support reliable execution of maintenance-related tasks and follow-up inspections.

 Best Use of MongoDB Atlas

MongoDB Atlas serves as RainGuard AI's data layer, supporting the storage and retrieval of application data for housing society maintenance and inspection workflows.

 Best Use of GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot assisted me throughout the development of RainGuard AI, including implementing backend and frontend features, debugging errors, improving existing code, and writing tests. It helped me develop and refine this open-source project more efficiently.

 Project Repository

https://github.com/srikrishik/rainguard-ai

Thanks for checking out RainGuard AI!

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm excited to make my first post on DEV and start my open-source journey with Hacktoberfest 2026! 🎉

I'm currently learning Python, SQL, DSA, and backend development, while exploring AI and building projects.

This month, I’m looking forward to:

Making my first open-source contributions

Learning from the developer community

Participating in hackathons

Building and sharing projects

Excited to learn, contribute, and connect with everyone! 🚀
