How old were you when you first learnt how to program?

Coding has become a vital skill, and knowing how to program has become significantly valuable. In order to keep up with society’s reliability on technology an increasing number of parents consider introducing their children to programming at a young age.

Around 79% of surveyed American parents want their children to learn how to code in school and 77% are convinced that their children will only be successful in the digital economy if they learn this skill. Now the question arises; how beneficial is it to teach children how to program?

Obviously there are advantages and disadvantages that can be listed here and at the end it will depend on your personal beliefs whether you think it’s right or wrong to start teaching at a young age. However, maybe there are a few things you haven’t considered yet. Let’s have a look at a few advantages first:

1. Development of strategic thinking

Learning programming at an early age helps children develop computational thinking, which involves understanding patterns, recognizing algorithms, and solving problems efficiently. This supports and enhances critical thinking and decision-making.

2. Promotion of creativity and innovation

Programming allows children to turn their ideas into reality and cultivates creativity by enabling them to design and build their own projects, games and applications. Additionally, it encourages out-of-the-box thinking through an innovative mindset.

3. Influential future perspectives

By teaching kids how to program they are automatically being prepared for a future in which automation, artificial intelligence and technology-driven careers are a solid and significant part of.

Some disadvantages include:

1. Risk of overstressing

Programming requires patience, persistence, and a solid understanding of logical concepts. Some children might find it frustrating or overwhelming, potentially leading to discouragement or a loss of interest.

2. Negative effects on mental and physical health

Spending too much time in front of screens can have negative effects on their physical health, social interactions, and overall well-being. Therefore, it is essential to balance programming education with other activities, such as outdoor play, sports, and non-screen-related hobbies.

3. Negligence of other learning areas

While programming is a valuable skill, an excessive focus on it may cause children to neglect other important areas of learning. Other areas such as languages, mathematics, social sciences, and arts should not be moved in the background.

— — — Conclusion — — —

Teaching children how to program offers many more advantages and disadvantages but in the end it is up to the parents and more importantly, the interest of the children whether programming should be pursued. While there are numerous advantages, the drawbacks should not be overlooked and belittled. Now that you have considered some of the pros and cons, what team are you on? 🤔

In the world of software development, efficiency and productivity are key. As technology evolves, new tools and methodologies emerge to streamline the coding process. One such innovation is the integration of artificial intelligence in pair programming, which has shown promising results in enhancing productivity.

Pair programming is a collaborative approach where two programmers work together on a single task. It promotes knowledge sharing, error detection, and overall code quality. Incorporating AI assistance in pair programming can be beneficial as it suggests code snippets, functions, and solutions in real-time.

A recent study investigated the productivity effects of GitHub Copilot, an AI pair programmer developed by OpenAI and showed significant results. The study conducted a controlled trial where programmers were tasked with implementing an HTTP server in JavaScript. The treated group had access to GitHub Copilot, while the control group did not. The results revealed that the treated group, empowered by GitHub Copilot’s AI suggestions, completed the task 55.8% faster than the control group. The productivity benefits were more pronounced for developers with less experience, older programmers, and those who dedicated more hours to programming per day.

Here are some benefits of AI-Powered Pair Programming:

1. Increased Efficiency: AI suggestions accelerate the coding process by providing instant code snippets and function suggestions based on the context. Developers can save time and effort by leveraging these suggestions instead of starting from scratch.

2. Improved Productivity: The trial results clearly demonstrate the substantial productivity gains achieved by the treated group. Completing the task 55.8% faster indicates a significant enhancement in efficiency and output.

3. Skill Enhancement and Learning: AI-powered pair programming tools can act as virtual mentors, providing valuable insights and suggestions. Programmers can learn from the AI’s suggestions and improve their coding skills over time.

4. Error Detection and Bug Prevention: AI can analyze the code in real-time and detect potential errors or bugs. It can provide suggestions to prevent common coding mistakes, leading to higher-quality code and reducing bugs.

However, it is significant to mention that human expertise and judgment are crucial and cannot be replaced by AI. Pair programming involves collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity, which are areas where human programmers excel. Programmers bring a deep understanding of the context, domain knowledge, and the ability to make judgment calls based on experience. They can think critically, adapt to changing requirements, and provide valuable insights that go beyond what AI can currently offer.

In conclusion, AI-powered pair programming showcases the potential of AI to revolutionize software development. The trial results indicate significant productivity gains, particularly for developers with less experience and older programmers. As AI technologies continue to advance, the integration of AI assistants in pair programming holds tremendous promise for enhancing efficiency, expanding access to software development careers, and fostering continuous learning and skill development within the industry.

When do you need a DevRel team and how do you build one?

 What is DevRel?

DevRel stands for Developer Relations, which means developer relationships. DevRel teams are teams of people focused on building and maintaining a strong relationship between a tech company and their developer community.

These teams typically work closely with developers to get feedback on products and technologies, provide training and resources, and help developers build applications or integrations. They also often organize community events and conferences to promote the exchange of ideas and experiences within the dev community.

DevRel's main goal is to build strong relationships with developers to ensure they understand, use, and can successfully deploy a company's products and technologies. Through these relationships, a company can gather valuable feedback from the dev community to improve products and drive innovation.

5 reasons why companies have DevRel teams

Improving product development: DevRel teams work closely with developers to get feedback and input that can be incorporated into product development. Through this exchange, companies can ensure that their products meet the needs and expectations of the dev community.

Increase product acceptance: DevRel teams can help increase product acceptance and adoption by providing training, documentation, tutorials, workshops, and other resources that help the dev community work successfully with products.

Strengthen brand reputation: By creating a positive relationship with the dev community, companies can strengthen their image and reputation and be perceived as innovation leaders in their industry.

Increasing customer loyalty: DevRel can help build a strong relationship between customers and companies by encouraging engaged developers to share their experiences with other developers, increasing customer retention and loyalty.

Innovation and competitive advantage: By collaborating with the Dev Community, companies can develop innovative solutions and applications that give them a competitive edge.

What does the work of a DevRel employee look like?

DevRel employees focus on building and maintaining relationships with developers and the developer community. Their work consists of helping developers understand a company's technology and products by providing training, resources, and support.

An important part of the job is also to gather feedback from developers and share it with the product and development teams. This includes organizing community events and conferences, and participating in developer forums and online communities to stay in touch with developers and understand their needs and requirements.

Although DevRel employees are not directly responsible for selling products or services, they contribute indirectly by strengthening the bond between developers and the company, thus building a loyal and engaged developer community. A strong dev community, in turn, can help the company grow by generating positive word-of-mouth and referrals.

Which companies have DevRel teams?

Some large technology companies that are known to be investing heavily in their DevRel teams include Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook. These companies have extensive developer communities and offer a wide range of resources, training, support and community events to help developers use their products and services.

However, there are also many smaller companies and startups that have DevRel teams and focus heavily on their relationship with their dev community. The size of a DevRel team often depends on the needs of the company and the size of the community it wants to serve.

How do you build a DevRel team?

The following steps offer a good starting point:

Identify needs:Before you build a DevRel team, find out what kind of support and resources your developers need. Conduct surveys and interviews to understand the needs and challenges of your developer community.

Build a team:Once you've identified the needs of your community, assemble a team of people who have the skills and experience to meet those needs. Typically, a DevRel team consists of developers, evangelists, community managers, and technical writers.

Create a plan:Create a plan that describes the team's goals, strategies, tactics, and resources. Define the types of resources and support the team should provide and plan the activities it will undertake to support the dev community.

Build a community:Build a dev community by organizing online and offline events to foster discussion and collaboration, and provide training and resources to meet dev needs.

Measure success: Measure the success of your DevRel team by tracking metrics such as engagement, dev community growth, and feedback from developers. Use this data to optimize and continuously improve the team.

Building a DevRel team takes time, patience, and resources. It's important to build a culture of collaboration, engagement, and trust to build a strong relationship with your dev community.

Here are some KPIs that can be used to measure the success of DevRel teams:

Community growth: This metric tracks the number of developers engaging with the company’s products and services. DevRel teams can measure this by tracking social media followers, event attendance, and online community membership.

Developer satisfaction: DevRel teams can use surveys, feedback forms, and other tools to measure how satisfied developers are with the company’s products and services.
Developer retention: This metric measures how many developers continue to use the company’s products and services over time. DevRel teams can measure this by tracking customer churn rates.

Developer advocacy: This metric tracks how many developers are actively recommending the company’s products and services to others. DevRel teams can measure this by tracking social media mentions and online reviews.

Developer engagement: This metric tracks how actively developers are engaging with the company’s products and services. DevRel teams can measure this by tracking the number of developers who attend events, participate in forums, and contribute to open-source projects.

These KPIs can help DevRel teams measure the success of their efforts and identify areas for improvement.

What do employees of DevRel teams earn?

Salaries can typically range from $60,000 to $150,000 per year. Entry-level employees with little experience may earn less, while experienced DevRel professionals with specialized knowledge and skills may earn a higher salary.

How does stackstream help DevRel teams?

By using stackstream, DevRel teams can provide real-time workshops, training, and tutorials to help developers work with their products and services. In addition, DevRel teams can use stackstream to engage with the dev community and gather feedback and input. For example, they can host live Q&A sessions or panels to interact directly with the community and hear their concerns. This way, DevRel teams can ensure that their products meet the needs and expectations of the dev community.

Another benefit of stackstream for DevRel teams is the ability to use the recorded videos for training purposes or as a reference for future workshops and training.

Practical examples

What does the Facebook DevRel team do?

Facebook's DevRel team is responsible for developing tools and APIs that help developers build on the Facebook platform. These tools and APIs include the Facebook Graph API, Facebook Login, and the Facebook SDKs, among others.

The DevRel team provides developers with a wide range of support, including documentation, tutorials, code samples, and support through various channels such as forums and social media.

Facebook's DevRel team provides training and workshops for developers to help them get the most out of the Facebook platform and tools. These trainings can take place both online and offline.

Engagement with the dev community: Facebook's DevRel team is present on various channels to engage with the community and gather feedback. These include social media, forums, meetups, and conferences.

Fostering innovation: The DevRel team works closely with the developer community to gather feedback and suggestions for improvements and new features for the Facebook platform. The team also uses feedback from developers to build new tools and APIs that meet the needs of the dev community.

90 companies with DevRel

Google

Microsoft

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Facebook

Digital.ai (CollabNet)

Gainsight

Hazelcast

Mattermost

Netlify

Nginx (F5 Networks)

Puppet

Rackspace

Snow Software

Solace

Sumo Logic

TIBCO Software

Travis CI (Idera)

Weaveworks

In a world where technology is playing an ever-increasing role, the importance of DevRel teams will only increase. By bridging the gap between business and developers and supporting the dev community, DevRel can help align products with user needs better and drive innovation faster.

Twitch for Coding

 A Testimonial

When your stress level rises while coding

Imagine the following: Your boss wants you to implement a new feature. You're new in the company and haven't really familiarized yourself with the source code and the internal processes. You're sitting in the office of your new colleagues with a question mark above your head. You don't let your desperation show, because you want to prove that you're doing a good job. You can't think of a solution, but you want to make a good first impression. Your eyes wander back and forth between the clock and the computer screen with the 30 open tabs, all of which you need because you want to be well prepared in order to deliver a good result. Your motivation is still high. Yet, it's already closing time again - by now the third and fourth in a row and you're still preparing. Your next plan is to ask for help and ask a colleague, but stop!

 Get help from other coders

stackstream, ever heard of it?
It's a live streaming platform for coders. An ecosystem of techies who want to learn from each other and support each other. The platform is for those who want a quick answer to complex coding questions and don't want to spend a lot of time skipping through a tutorial or a document. Unlike stackoverflow, where you describe your technical problem to the (huge) community there and hope for an answer, on stackstream you can open a room and be matched live with developers who will help you. The answers are interactive, you can ask questions, learn and change your mindset. In the spirit of open source, you do the same for questioners.

 Open Source 2.0

From my own experience I know how important it is to get answers to technical problems as quickly as possible. You are sitting in front of a complicated source code and just don't know what to do. Most of the time it's really only small things that cause you headaches. Either I use Google or I describe my questions directly in a designated forum and hope for a quick and qualified answer.
Since these are processes that can be endlessly annoying and time-consuming, stackstream provides a much more efficient and at the same time interactive remedy. The principle is based on constant exchange with people who don't know each other but are like-minded. Because through live streaming it is possible to get other perspectives on your lines of code. This is a big advantage when you can't see the forest for the trees.

According to the motto "You have problems with your Python code and don't know what to do? From now on, experienced developers are available to you directly via Livecam." a very cool tool for the open source market has now been created.

Furthermore, you have the chance to look over the shoulders of others and learn a few tricks here and there. Everybody also gets the chance to compare their progress with others.

This is how the Twitch for coders works

Similar to Twitch, on stackstream you will see numerous sessions on various topics. The difference is that stackstream is only about code.
To watch or listen to other sessions, you don't even need an account. Only once you want to be active in the chat or in a stream, you need an account. And that's created within a minute. Once you have an account, you can publish your own content. You also have the possibility to get in contact with other coders via direct message. Because stackstream is very democratic, there is no right or wrong, or inappropriate questions. The goal is to share, learn and help others. If you're lucky, you'll even get to meet and interact with recognized IT industry leaders in a live stream.
The cool thing is, stackstream is constantly being developed upon user request. The product grows with the community, because now you and even yours truly have the opportunity to directly contribute to the development of new features.

Google was yesterday. stackstream is today.

So, do you want to sit around alone in front of your computer all your life? What's the point of googling problems and getting non-specific answers that only approximate your problem? Google or not, but what if you can log on to stackstream and get an answer right away that's much more satisfying? And get in touch with people in your industry face-to-face?

I would have saved myself a gray hair or two

I wish there had been something like stackstream much earlier. I might have had one less bead of sweat by just quickly starting a webcam session. You can instantly connect with an expert streamer who can give you instant, no-obligation advice, and you can even write your lines of code together and learn as you go. How cool is that? The secret weapon for bad days and thinking blocks.

I've been so impressed with the whole thing that I spend my days writing blog articles here and even take an active role in designing stackstream. I hope this blog post inspired you and helps you with future coding challenges!

Your Daniel

Also, willst du dein Leben lang alleine vor deinem Computer herumsitzen?

Dein Daniel
