How I pick a voice input setup for PC typing (2026)

I type a lot on a laptop — chat replies, long AI prompts, the occasional email in another language — and the bottleneck is almost always the keyboard. Voice input helps, but “voice input” now means several different products that solve different problems. Here’s the short map I use before installing anything.

1. Built-in OS dictation (start here)

Windows Voice Typing (Win + H) / Apple Dictation
Best for: short bursts, already on the machine, zero setup
Tradeoff: uses the computer’s mic; room noise and laptop keyboard clatter show up fast; little “speak messy → clean prose” polish- Best for: you stay at the desk, speak into the laptop/headset mic, want filler-word cleanup and punctuation
Tradeoff: you’re still tied to the PC microphone quality and distance. Local-first options (e.g. SuperWhisper-style) win on privacy/offline; cloud-first options win on “just works” polish across devices

This category is great when the mic is fine and you mainly want cleaner text.

3. Phone-as-microphone only (audio pipe)

Classic example: WO Mic — phone becomes a virtual mic for the PC.

Best for: you already have Dragon / OS dictation / another STT on the computer and only need a closer mic
Tradeoff: you still install a driver/client path; speech-to-text stays on the PC side
Examples in this lane include Vox Manager, AirMic, and FlowMic (open source; Windows/macOS desktop + Android/iOS phone; cloud relay or self-host).
Best for: laptop mic is bad or far; you already hold the phone; you want words in ChatGPT / Slack / Notepad / the browser box — not in a separate transcript editor

- Same LAN vs cross-network (relay) without fighting drivers
- Optional translate / tidy-up on the way (speak one language, land another)
