      <title>Using HTTP Headers for faster Responses</title>

  Intro
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There is a history: You got a ticket because a specific API route is slow, and it's your job to fix that. Sounds familiar, right? Your first thought is to make whatever operation there fast, but it's not possible in this case. The second option is to give more resources to the service, but that does not sound like a real solution. The third option is to cache with Redis/memcached to avoid paying the penalty for every request. But what if I told you about a "free" solution that is as simple as adding some headers to the response?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The solution itself is tied to where the server is hosted, or at least where the domain exists. Each platform has its own ways to do so. For our example, we will use Cloudflare for the sake of simplicity.&lt;/p&gt;

  Explanation
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Cloudflare has cache headers so it can cache fetch requests made to their own domain, in my case: &lt;code&gt;https://[project].stneto.dev&lt;/code&gt;. These headers aren't tied to a specific provider, so each of them can have their own version, such as: &lt;a href="https://docs.netlify.com/platform/caching/#supported-cache-control-headers" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;Netlify&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="https://vercel.com/docs/edge-network/caching#how-to-cache-responses" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;Vercel&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="https://docs.aws.amazon.com/apigateway/latest/developerguide/api-gateway-caching.html#enable-api-gateway-cache-keys" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;AWS Api Gateway&lt;/a&gt; and the list can go on.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The code example did show some JavaScript code, but the caching itself isn't tied to a language or a framework, so it's possible to do something like this as well:&lt;/p&gt;

  Closing thoughts
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The know-how to better use the platform can do wonders for you, as the solution is there "for free," and you just need to know how to use it. There is a difference between using what the platform offers to you and a specific platform feature. Using response headers between platforms is quite simple, as you can just replace them, and you are good to go. But using some very specific behavior tied to a platform can be quite dangerous if you ever need to move away from there. It's about the diminishing returns; staying "platform-free" can be nice because you have more flexibility on where the service runs, but at the same time, you won't be using 100% of what the platform offers to you.&lt;/p&gt;

  What are tests and it's objectives?
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Code testing exists with the objective to make sure that your code behaves the same after you add and remove code, with the passing of time, or even modify the code itself. They don't guarantee that your code is bug-free, neither that you don't have unknown behavior, they just make sure that given inputs it will do what &lt;strong&gt;you&lt;/strong&gt; expect. Don't think that just because you wrote tests that your code is perfect and there is no error within, they don't replace QA, logging and tracing. Use them as guides, but don't blindly follow them as rule books on how your code behaves&lt;/p&gt;

  What are the different types of tests?

&lt;p&gt;If you are an experienced developer you can guess some times, but in this article i'm going to show only three of them for the sake of time and explanations.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A very common and prolific kind of test. The focus of unit testing is to check pure functions, not creating any side effects. If you run the same function 100 times, the same expected result should happen 100 times.&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We need a postgres connection for our current tests, if you run in an environment that does not have said connection, we can't run our tests. Let's improve it then. Look at the database connection type &lt;code&gt;*sqlx.DB&lt;/code&gt;, not a postgres specific connection, so as long as we provide a valid sqlx connection, we can be sure that our tests can execute easily. And for that we can use sqlite, both in memory or writing to a single file, as SQL for the most part is a spec language, we can swap sqlite and postgres depending on where we are running.&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Our code increased quite a bit. But what did it changed? First of all, now we make only one query to the database. We also manually map query result into a business rule structure in the &lt;code&gt;Post&lt;/code&gt; and &lt;code&gt;Comments&lt;/code&gt; structs. We also separated the database struct &lt;code&gt;postsWithCommentsRow&lt;/code&gt; from our external structs.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;After understanding a little more about tests, we took some go code, wrote some tests and improved the code. So what now? Even if you don't like go, you can still understand the concepts from what we discussed here and use in your own code. Testing is one of the skills that you learn with passing the time and acquiring more experience.&lt;/p&gt;

  What usually happens
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;When you have a decloupled client from the backend, you usually have something like:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Having a single query when you can is the best way to avoid eating the tax to request data to the database&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;What you don’t see in the list are the multiple serialization and deserialization costs associated with operations. Fetching from the database or any external source of information, will make you pay the deserialization cost, and when you serialize back to the client you pay for it again.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Why i pay for it?” you ask, every point of interaction of data: database, server, client; each one of them has its own domain for handling data, even if its the same domain (typescript server/client) you still need to send data between them, and for that you need a common language to be able to send and for the receiver to understand and parse it.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Yeah, true. But with protobuf you need to know beforehand the shape of the data being sent from both server and client, and that defeat the proposit of fetching less data or using sql aggregations.&lt;/p&gt;

  Double Serialization
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Serialization in the article references taking the data, transforming into a shared common language (json, yaml, xml, etc…), and sending it off to whoever requested it to be deserialized into a known data.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But what is &lt;code&gt;double serialization&lt;/code&gt;? Double serialization is when data is being serialized/deserialized twice for the same request. Wonder how? Database → Api → Client. Each arrow means that data was serialized, shipped, then deserialized. If you aren’t careful with the data being passed around, you can end up with a lot of garbage to handle and performance issues as it can be a heavy operation. The more data needs to be transported, the more garbage is created.&lt;br&gt;

  Closing thoughts

&lt;p&gt;Perhaps you've never had to think about how much information you search for and send. It's so much simpler to gather everything without being too careful, but it's these little details that start creating problems in the form of a snowball.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Thinking pessimistically:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;You fetched more information than you needed.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The server had to do more work to process and send the information.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;There are more data packets to be sent over the network, increasing the chance of problems and packet resending, which raises latency.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The application had more work to do in processing more information than necessary.

&lt;li&gt;If it's an application with a more "relaxed" approach to memory, the application itself has become heavier (garbage collection).&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;With more information to be sent, the response has also become heavier. Both in transforming the information from one domain to a common format and in sending all that information over the network again.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;More information was transmitted, and now you also start paying for data transmission over the network.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The client receiving the information will need to put in more effort to process the information.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The simple decision to fetch more information than necessary created a huge snowball effect. Perhaps, when everything needs to move quickly for the delivery of something, it makes sense to reconsider later how much information is being transmitted. But thinking that this problem doesn't exist is a considerable risk and can turn into a massive snowball.&lt;/p&gt;

Every main service probably has a data source where data is stored and served, so being able to retrieve data faster can lead to better performance and an overall reduction in costs.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;code&gt;(cost=0.28..8.29 rows=1 width=47)&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;: This section provides information about the estimated cost of executing the query. The cost is an arbitrary unit used by the database optimizer to compare query execution strategies. In this case, the estimated cost of the query is between 0.28 and 8.29. It also estimates that there will be 1 row returned, and the width of each row is 47 bytes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;code&gt;(actual time=0.033..0.035 rows=1 loops=1)&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;: This part of the output shows the actual execution time of the query. It took between 0.033 and 0.035 milliseconds to execute the query. It also indicates that only 1 row was returned, and the query executed in a single loop.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;code&gt;Index Cond: ((id)::text = '01H7BWSR1GJCJBKGGPV5NS3YNY'::text)&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;: This line specifies the condition used in the index scan. It's comparing the "id" column of the "users" table, cast to text, to the value '01H7BWSR1GJCJBKGGPV5NS3YNY' also cast to text. This condition is used to identify the row(s) that match the WHERE clause of your query.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;code&gt;Planning Time: 0.070 ms&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;: This line provides the time it took to plan the query, which is the process of determining the most efficient way to execute the query. In this case, it took 0.070 milliseconds to plan the query.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;code&gt;Execution Time: 0.056 ms&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;: This line indicates the total execution time of the query, which is the time it took to execute the query after planning. In this case, it took 0.056 milliseconds to execute the query.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We are faced with a different scan, now with &lt;code&gt;Seq Scan&lt;/code&gt; and as the name implies, we sequentially scanned through the table looking rows with matching conditions. At the time of the query, the are 1000 rows in the table, only one with ‘username-999’ as a column value, but we had to scan the entire table as there was no way to guarantee that only that row had the value.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But lets say that there is a new business rule about unique usernames.&lt;br&gt;

  Explaining the index
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Why did it change from a Seq to an Index scan? Previously, we had no way to find which record had the username without scanning the entire table for the matching row(s). However, now we can have better assurance that the value is unique when modifying the data, and a faster lookup as we can scan the index more efficiently.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Bitmap Index uses bits (0s and 1s) to represent whether a particular value exists or not in the column. &lt;p&gt;We previously indexed both fields separately, but now we have both of them in the same query.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In this case, we can delve further into the query to better understand its planning aspect. By first index scanning the user_id, and then the published value, we can eliminate a larger portion of unwanted rows by examining the user_id. This is because there are more possibilities of having different values that we don't want. We can then check a smaller subset of the published filter.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We can also create a compounded index for the case above: user_id and published.&lt;br&gt;

  What is the main difference between a KV store and a SQL database?
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In "classic" databases, there are many points of access to the data. You can jump from table1 to table2 to table3 to table n, as long as there is a logical connection between them. To take advantage of this, you have to plan what should happen in the query. Database engines are great at this. However, one drawback is that you must plan the entire process and execute it afterward. In Postgres, this is shown as &lt;strong&gt;Planning Time: N ms - Execution Time: N ms&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;With KV stores, you can achieve almost linear data access at the expense of a rigid access pattern. You must access data using the key → value pattern every time. There is a base cost to using this pattern, as you must compute the key to locate the data. For small amounts of data, this cost may not be worth paying. However, you can tip the scale in favor of the initial cost for larger amounts of data.&lt;/p&gt;

  When to use one or another
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In general, SQL databases are more flexible and offer decent performance when you don't know the data access pattern. When using a KV store, you trade flexibility for faster read speeds. For some use cases, this tradeoff is acceptable, but not for all. However, SQL databases and KV stores are not mutually exclusive. You can have both at the same time.&lt;/p&gt;
