How a childhood fascination with video games evolved into a journey through martial arts, software development, computer science, and environmental AI.

Every developer has a starting point.

For some, it is a school computer. For others, it is a programming tutorial, a robotics kit, or a personal project that refuses to work until three in the morning.

For Omar Abdelfattah Alshafai, the story began somewhere less conventional: in front of a gaming console.

Born in 2008 to an Egyptian family in Saudi Arabia, Omar spent his early childhood in Riyadh, where video games became one of his first serious interests. At around six years old, he was playing Call of Duty, experimenting with different game modes, and trying to achieve results that would challenge his own limits.

His online username was
h3mora208
.

At the time, there was no computer science degree, no software library, and no environmental AI research on the horizon. There was simply a young player who wanted to improve.

Looking back, his early gaming experiences offer an interesting starting point for a much broader story: one about competition, curiosity, and the willingness to explore disciplines that initially seem unrelated.

 1. The First Arena: Competitive Gaming

Omar's early gaming years revolved around titles such as Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Call of Duty: Black Ops III.

He recalls achieving a 100-kill Team Deathmatch result in five minutes at the age of eight, alongside a one-minute-and-thirteen-second Gun Game run in Black Ops III.

These are personal recollections rather than independently verified competitive records, but they illustrate what gaming meant to him at that age.

He was not interested only in playing. He was interested in performance.

Gaming provided a system with rules, measurable outcomes, immediate feedback, and opportunities to improve. A failed attempt could be followed by another. A difficult challenge could become a personal target.

Those same characteristics appear in software development.

A program produces an unexpected output. A developer investigates the problem, changes the implementation, and tests it again. Progress comes from understanding what went wrong and trying a better approach.

Gaming and programming are obviously different activities, and success in one does not automatically translate into success in the other. Nevertheless, both can provide environments in which curiosity and repeated experimentation matter.

For Omar, gaming was one of his earliest experiences with that process.

In late 2017, he moved to Egypt. His surroundings changed, and so did the arenas in which he would eventually pursue competition.

 2. From Virtual Competition to Martial Arts

Gaming was not the only interest that shaped Omar's adolescence.

He began training in Sanda Kung Fu and Tang Soo Do, entering a world where improvement demanded physical conditioning, technical practice, patience, and resilience.

In 2022, he earned a black belt in Tang Soo Do. In 2023, he earned a black belt in Sanda Kung Fu.

He also reports winning African championship titles in 2022 and 2023, a Mediterranean championship in 2023, and the Jeet Kune Do Open League in 2024.

His reported fighting record stands at 67 wins, three losses, and 13 draws across 83 fights, although the scope of the record depends on which bouts and competitions are counted.

These achievements belong to a different category from software projects and academic qualifications, but they are an important part of his background.

Combat sports require an individual to respond to changing conditions rather than simply follow a predetermined plan. Training involves recognizing patterns, making decisions under pressure, correcting mistakes, and adapting to an opponent.

In that respect, there is an interesting parallel with engineering: a solution that works in theory still has to perform under real conditions.

The comparison should not be taken too literally. Fighting and programming require different skills. But both reward preparation, adaptation, and the ability to learn from failure.

Omar's athletic journey would continue alongside his growing interest in technology.

 3. A Return to Gaming: Sim Racing in Riyadh

In 2023, at fifteen years old, Omar participated in an Aramco Aston Martin sim-racing event at Boulevard City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Competing in the GT3 category using Project CARS 3, he reports finishing in second place.

The event represented a return to the digital competitive environment where his interests had begun.

But by then, gaming was no longer the only arena in his life. Martial arts had introduced him to physical competition, while his emerging interest in programming was opening another direction.

Rather than replacing one interest with another, he continued to explore several of them.

That combination would eventually become a defining feature of his personal story.

 4. Beyond the Competitor: Coaching and Learning

Omar's involvement in sport expanded beyond his own performance.

He became a coach for an under-13 kickboxing team and reports serving as a trainer for his school's kickboxing team while attending a military secondary school in Egypt.

Coaching changes the nature of a challenge. Instead of concentrating exclusively on personal progress, a coach must help other people develop their abilities.

He also reports earning a sports coaching certificate through the International Olympic Committee and completing the FIFA Diploma in Football Medicine in 2025.

These experiences reflect an interest in understanding sport beyond competition itself, including training, development, and the science associated with athletic performance.

That interest is relevant to his broader journey because it demonstrates a willingness to approach a subject from multiple perspectives.

An athlete experiences performance directly. A coach helps develop it. A student investigates the principles behind it.

Software engineering offers a similar range of perspectives: using a tool, building it, and studying the systems and algorithms that make it work.

Omar's interests were beginning to span both the practical and the analytical.

 5. Discovering Programming

In 2023, Omar began learning programming independently.

This introduced a new kind of challenge.

Instead of competing against another player or athlete, he could now work with logic, algorithms, data, and software systems. Instead of measuring improvement through a score or competition result, he could build something and observe whether it worked as intended.

His learning journey included online educational resources associated with organizations such as Harvard, IBM, Cisco, and Microsoft.

These resources formed part of his independent learning. Completing an online course is not the same as enrolling in a university degree, but online education can provide an accessible way to explore technical subjects and build foundational skills.

Over time, his interests developed toward computer science, software engineering, and artificial intelligence.

One of his projects was
omni-data-refinement
, a Python library that became part of his software development journey.

Projects like this matter because programming becomes more meaningful when concepts are applied to something concrete. A developer must think about what a tool should do, how its components fit together, and how to make its behavior useful to someone who might eventually use it.

That process is different from simply watching tutorials or completing isolated exercises.

It is also an important transition in the journey from learning a programming language to thinking like a software developer.

 6. From Software to Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence offers a particularly interesting direction for someone whose interests span technology, data, and real-world systems.

AI is not simply about creating chatbots or generating images. It also involves extracting information from complex datasets, identifying patterns, developing predictive models, and building tools that support decisions.

For Omar, the field became part of a wider interest in how computational methods can be applied to problems beyond conventional software applications.

His technical interests expanded toward environmental computing and Earth observation.

This creates an opportunity to connect two areas that are often discussed separately: computer science and environmental science.

Environmental systems produce enormous quantities of data. Satellites observe the Earth's surface and atmosphere, while other instruments collect information about land cover, vegetation, water, temperature, and weather.

Making sense of these observations can require data processing, statistical analysis, machine learning, and scientific interpretation.

A machine-learning model might help classify satellite imagery, identify changes in vegetation, or estimate environmental conditions from remote-sensing observations.

But these applications also introduce difficult questions.

Does a model trained on one geographical region work in another? How does its performance change between seasons? Can differences in sensors or environmental conditions affect its predictions?

These are not merely programming problems. They sit at the intersection of software engineering, data science, machine learning, and environmental research.

For developers interested in AI, they demonstrate why understanding the underlying data and the real-world problem is just as important as selecting a model.

 7. Learning About the Earth Through NASA ARSET

Omar later became a participant in NASA's Applied Remote Sensing Training (ARSET) programme.

NASA ARSET provides training on remote-sensing data and its applications, including environmental monitoring, agriculture, water resources, and disaster management.

Official programme information is available through NASA Applied Sciences Training.

For a computer science student interested in environmental AI, remote sensing provides an opportunity to explore how software and machine learning can work with observations of the real world.

Satellite data can be used in workflows that involve image processing, geospatial analysis, classification, and predictive modelling.

For example, a developer could investigate whether a land-cover classification model performs equally well across different regions, or whether a model's accuracy decreases when applied to satellite imagery collected under different conditions.

Such questions encourage developers to think beyond a model's headline accuracy and examine how well it generalizes to new data.

This is an important distinction in applied machine learning: a model can perform well on a familiar test dataset and still struggle when the data distribution changes.

Environmental AI is therefore not only about building models. It is also about understanding uncertainty, evaluating performance, and interpreting results responsibly.

Omar's participation in remote-sensing training represents a step toward exploring these connections between computer science and environmental applications.

It should not be confused with employment at NASA or participation in a NASA research mission. Rather, it is an educational experience connected to a scientific field that he is interested in pursuing.

 8. Why the Combination Matters

At first glance, gaming, martial arts, coaching, programming, and environmental computing might seem like unrelated interests.

One involves digital competition. Another involves physical performance. Another requires building systems with code. Environmental computing applies computational techniques to the study of the planet.

Yet there is a useful way to understand the combination: each offers a different kind of problem to solve.

In gaming, the challenge might be mastering a difficult level or improving a result.

In martial arts, it might be refining a technique or adapting to an opponent.

In coaching, it might be helping another person understand a skill.

In software development, it might be designing a tool that behaves reliably.

In machine learning, it might be discovering whether a model can identify meaningful patterns in data it has never encountered before.

The details differ, but all of these pursuits involve learning, practice, and evaluation.

That does not mean athletic achievement guarantees technical ability, or that an interest in gaming automatically makes someone a good programmer. Skills must be developed in each field independently.

The more interesting point is that people do not necessarily need to restrict themselves to a single interest while they are learning.

An athlete can study computer science. A developer can explore environmental science. A student can build software while continuing to compete in sport.

Sometimes, the most valuable direction emerges from combining interests rather than abandoning all but one.

 9. The Developer Is Still Becoming

Omar's story is still in progress.

Born in 2008, he is at an early stage of his academic and professional life. His undergraduate studies in computer science are ongoing, his technical skills continue to develop, and his future direction has not yet been fully determined.

His athletic results, coaching experience, educational activities, and software projects represent different kinds of progress. They should be evaluated on their own merits rather than combined into a single measure of success.

A championship title is not a programming qualification. A training certificate is not a research publication. A software library is not proof of expertise in every area of computer science.

Recognizing these distinctions makes the story more meaningful, not less.

It shows a young person exploring multiple fields while still having plenty to learn.

The next stage will depend on what he builds, what he studies, how he evaluates his work, and whether he can turn his curiosity into useful contributions.

For an aspiring developer, that is perhaps the most relatable part of the story.

Nobody begins with complete knowledge of a field. Progress comes from choosing a problem, learning what is necessary, experimenting with solutions, and improving through experience.

 Conclusion: One Journey, Many Arenas

Omar Abdelfattah Alshafai's journey began with video games in Saudi Arabia and gradually expanded into martial arts, coaching, software development, computer science, and environmental computing.

It is an unusual combination, but it does not need to be presented as a completed success story or an extraordinary prediction about the future.

Its value lies in the process.

A childhood interest in competition developed alongside athletic training. Independent learning introduced programming. Software projects created opportunities to apply technical knowledge. An interest in AI opened the door to questions about how computing can help us understand the Earth.

Each chapter introduced a new set of challenges and a new opportunity to learn.

For developers, students, and anyone exploring multiple interests, the lesson is simple: your starting point does not have to define the limits of what you learn next.

You can begin with a game and become curious about the technology behind it. You can study programming and discover applications in fields you never expected to explore. You can continue developing one skill while making room for another.

The important thing is to move beyond curiosity alone—to practice, build, investigate, and keep learning.

The story is not about having already mastered every arena.

It is about continuing to enter new ones.

From Navy SEAL to Doctor to Astronaut: What Jonny Kim's Journey Teaches Us About Learning

One person. Three demanding professions. A journey that shows why learning should not be limited to a single field.

What would it take to become a Navy SEAL, earn a medical degree from Harvard, and travel into space as an astronaut?

Most people would consider any one of those achievements a lifetime ambition. Each requires years of preparation, demanding training, and the ability to perform under pressure.

Jonny Kim pursued all three.

His journey is remarkable not simply because of the professions he entered, but because each required him to learn an entirely different set of skills. Military operations, medicine, mathematics, aviation, and spaceflight might appear to belong to separate worlds, yet his career connects them through a common theme: the willingness to keep learning.

For students, software developers, engineers, and anyone trying to build a future in technology, his story offers an interesting perspective on what it means to develop expertise.

It also raises a question worth considering:

What if your first career goal does not have to be your final destination?

 1. A Beginning That Did Not Reveal the Future

Jonny Kim was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, to South Korean immigrant parents.

After graduating from Santa Monica High School in 2002, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He eventually joined the Navy SEALs, serving in operational roles that included combat medic, sniper, navigator, and point man.

According to NASA's biography, he participated in more than 100 combat operations during two deployments to the Middle East.

His military experience placed him in environments where preparation, teamwork, situational awareness, and decision-making could have serious consequences.

Yet his story did not end with military service.

Experiences during his time in the Navy influenced his decision to pursue medicine. Through the Navy's enlisted-to-officer programme, he began a new academic journey, earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of San Diego in 2012.

He subsequently attended Harvard Medical School, graduating with a medical degree in 2016, and completed postgraduate training in emergency medicine.

The transition is significant.

Kim moved from a military operational environment into mathematics, medical education, and clinical training. Each transition demanded new knowledge rather than simply extending the technical skills he had already acquired.

His journey demonstrates that a person's earlier experiences can inform their next direction without necessarily determining it.

Sources: NASA's astronaut biography and the U.S. Navy's account of his medical and aviation training.

 2. The Power of Learning Something Completely New

Imagine spending years developing expertise in one demanding profession and then deciding to become a beginner again.

That is one of the most interesting aspects of Kim's journey.

Military service did not automatically qualify him to practise medicine. A medical degree did not automatically qualify him to fly military aircraft. And neither achievement alone made him ready for spaceflight.

Each transition required its own education, assessment, and training.

This distinction matters because learning is often misunderstood as collecting knowledge that can be transferred unchanged from one subject to another.

In reality, different fields have different standards of competence.

A programmer can understand algorithms without knowing how to diagnose a patient. A physician can understand human physiology without knowing how to engineer a spacecraft. A talented athlete can possess extraordinary discipline without automatically becoming an expert in machine learning.

The useful skill is not assuming that expertise in one field makes every other field easy.

It is being willing to learn the fundamentals, accept feedback, and build competence from the beginning.

For developers, this is particularly relevant.

You might know Python but need to learn C++. You might build websites but want to understand distributed systems. You might understand machine learning theory but discover that deploying a reliable model requires a completely different set of skills.

Every new field has its own vocabulary, tools, constraints, and methods of evaluation.

Kim's career is a reminder that becoming a beginner again is not necessarily a step backward. Sometimes it is the beginning of the next stage of development.

 3. From Mathematics and Medicine to Spaceflight

In 2017, NASA selected Kim as one of its astronaut candidates.

His background already included military service, mathematics, medicine, and emergency medical training. But becoming an astronaut introduced another enormous learning challenge.

Astronaut candidate training included instruction in International Space Station systems, robotics, spacewalk operations, aircraft training, geology, survival skills, and Russian-language proficiency.

These subjects are not interchangeable. They represent different technical and operational demands that must come together when a crew works in space.

For an engineer or software developer, this provides a useful example of systems thinking.

A complex system rarely depends on one component alone.

A spacecraft requires hardware, software, communication systems, power management, navigation, environmental controls, and procedures for handling failures. The people operating it must understand not only their individual responsibilities but also how different components interact.

A similar principle applies to software engineering.

A web application might have a frontend, backend, database, authentication service, external APIs, and deployment infrastructure. Each component can work independently while the complete system still fails because the components do not interact correctly.

Understanding the whole system is therefore different from mastering a single component.

Kim's training illustrates how demanding environments require people to combine specialised knowledge with an understanding of the larger operation.

NASA's official account of his astronaut training is available here.

 4. The Developer's Perspective: Building More Than One Skill

There is an important lesson here for people entering computer science.

It is tempting to believe that success comes from mastering a single programming language, framework, or technology.

But the software industry rarely operates around isolated skills.

A machine-learning engineer may need mathematics, data processing, programming, model evaluation, and deployment knowledge. A cybersecurity engineer may need networking, operating systems, scripting, threat analysis, and an understanding of human behaviour.

The challenge is not necessarily to master everything at once. It is to understand which skills are needed for a particular goal and develop them in a sensible order.

Kim's journey suggests a useful approach:

Build depth in one field while remaining willing to explore others.

This is different from trying to learn every technology simultaneously.

A student who spends a month switching between ten programming languages may develop less practical ability than one who learns a language properly and uses it to build several projects.

Likewise, exploring artificial intelligence becomes more productive when programming fundamentals, mathematics, and data handling are developed alongside it.

The goal is not to accumulate the largest possible list of interests. It is to turn curiosity into competence.

 5. Why His Story Matters to AI and Engineering

Kim's professional background is particularly interesting because medicine, aviation, and space exploration increasingly intersect with advanced technology.

Modern spaceflight depends on complex engineering systems, software, robotics, communications, and scientific research. Medical research aboard the International Space Station also explores questions about human physiology, biology, and how living systems behave in microgravity.

During his first spaceflight, Kim served as a flight engineer on the International Space Station as part of Expeditions 72/73.

He launched aboard the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft on April 8, 2025, and returned to Earth on December 9, 2025, after approximately 245 days in space.

His mission included scientific investigations and technology demonstrations. Among the work described by NASA were studies involving bioprinted tissues, remotely commanded robotic systems, and materials manufacturing in space.

These projects demonstrate how scientific research often requires several disciplines to work together.

A biomedical investigation might involve biology, medical knowledge, materials science, and specialised equipment. A robotic experiment might depend on control systems, communications, software, and an understanding of the environment in which the robot operates.

Artificial intelligence can contribute to many such fields, but it is most useful when developers understand the problem they are trying to solve.

For example, building an AI system to analyse medical images requires more than training a neural network. It also requires appropriate data, meaningful evaluation, awareness of limitations, and careful interpretation of results.

The same applies to Earth observation, autonomous systems, and scientific computing.

Technology becomes more powerful when technical skills are combined with an understanding of the real-world problem.

NASA's report on Kim's return and the research conducted during the mission is available here.

 6. Discipline Is Important, but So Is Direction

Stories about exceptional careers are often reduced to a single explanation: discipline.

Discipline certainly matters. Long-term goals require consistent effort, and demanding professions require people to prepare even when the work is difficult.

However, discipline alone does not explain an entire career.

People also need opportunities, education, mentorship, resources, feedback, and sometimes circumstances they could not have predicted.

Kim's journey involved formal institutions, structured training, military education pathways, medical school, and NASA's astronaut selection process.

Acknowledging those factors does not diminish his achievements. It provides a more realistic picture of how people develop expertise.

For students, this means that personal effort and external opportunities should not be treated as opposites.

You can take responsibility for your learning while also seeking mentors, scholarships, internships, research programmes, and communities that help you improve.

You can work independently without pretending that you must do everything alone.

In software development, the equivalent might be contributing to open-source projects, asking experienced developers to review your code, joining a research group, or collaborating with people whose skills complement your own.

Progress is often the result of individual effort combined with an environment that supports learning.

 7. The Importance of Being Willing to Change Direction

One of the most striking aspects of Kim's career is that his early professional path did not prevent him from pursuing a completely different ambition.

He moved from military service to medicine and then into astronautics.

That does not mean everyone should constantly change careers. Nor does it mean that every new interest deserves an immediate commitment.

Instead, his story challenges the idea that a person must choose one identity early in life and remain within its boundaries forever.

A computer science student might discover an interest in climate science. A medical student might become fascinated by robotics. An electrical engineer might move into spacecraft systems. A software developer might eventually pursue scientific research.

These transitions require planning and substantial work, but they are possible.

The important distinction is between changing direction because you have discovered a meaningful new goal and abandoning every difficult task when progress becomes uncomfortable.

Learning a new field takes patience. Developing expertise takes time.

Curiosity can help you choose a direction, but sustained effort is what turns that direction into meaningful progress.

 8. What Students and Developers Can Actually Learn From Him

Jonny Kim's career is extraordinary, but the most useful lessons do not require anyone to become a Navy SEAL, attend Harvard, or travel into space.

They can be applied to ordinary learning and engineering work.

First, learn the fundamentals.

Do not rush through programming basics simply to reach the latest AI framework. Understanding algorithms, data structures, mathematics, and software design makes advanced work easier to approach.

Second, build things that demonstrate what you know.

Tutorials can introduce concepts, but projects force you to apply them. Build a useful application, contribute to an open-source repository, or reproduce an experiment from a research paper.

Third, become comfortable with being a beginner.

When you enter a new field, expect to encounter unfamiliar concepts. Ask questions, study the fundamentals, and use feedback to identify what you need to improve.

Fourth, understand the broader system.

Do not focus exclusively on the part of a project that interests you most. Learn how your code interacts with databases, networks, users, hardware, or the environment in which it operates.

Finally, connect your skills to a meaningful problem.

Technology is not valuable simply because it is technically impressive. Its value often comes from what it helps people understand, build, improve, or accomplish.

These are practical habits that can help students develop their abilities regardless of their chosen field.

 9. The Journey Continues Beyond the Headlines

In August 2026, NASA announced that Kim would leave the agency to continue his military service in the U.S. Navy.

His departure followed nearly a decade of service to NASA, including his eight-month mission aboard the International Space Station.

The announcement marked a new transition in a career already defined by several major professional chapters.

It is also a reminder that careers do not always follow a straight line, even after someone has achieved an extraordinary goal.

A successful chapter does not have to be the final chapter. Skills developed in one environment can inform future work, and experience can create new possibilities.

For anyone pursuing a career in technology, this is worth remembering.

Your first programming language will not necessarily be your last. Your first project will not define the limits of your abilities. Your first job does not have to determine the rest of your career.

What matters is developing a strong foundation, learning from experience, and making thoughtful decisions about what comes next.

Kim's career cannot be reduced to a formula that guarantees success. His opportunities, experiences, and personal circumstances are unique.

But his willingness to undertake demanding new forms of learning provides a useful example for anyone who wants to keep growing.

Conclusion: Your First Skill Does Not Have to Define You

Jonny Kim's journey connects military service, mathematics, medicine, aviation, and space exploration.

Each field demanded new knowledge. Each transition required preparation. And each professional chapter contributed to a career that crossed boundaries many people might never consider crossing.

For developers and students, the lesson is not that everyone should attempt to master five different professions.

It is that learning does not have to stop when you become competent in one field.

You can develop expertise in computer science while exploring environmental science. You can build software while studying the mathematics behind machine learning. You can pursue an engineering career and remain curious about medicine, robotics, or space exploration.

You do not need to know every step of your future before you begin.

Choose a direction. Learn the fundamentals. Build something. Seek feedback. Then decide what you want to learn next.

The most important part of a long journey is not knowing every destination in advance.

It is being willing to prepare for the next challenge when it arrives.
