Frontend interviews can be challenging, even when you have hands-on experience with React and JavaScript.

You might understand how to build a component, manage state, and call APIs, but interviews often test much more: JavaScript fundamentals, problem-solving, React concepts, performance optimization, and your ability to explain technical decisions.

The biggest challenge isn't always learning more. It's knowing what to prepare, in what order, and how to practise consistently.

Here is a practical roadmap you can use to organize your preparation.

Week 1: Strengthen Your JavaScript Fundamentals

JavaScript is one of the most important areas to prepare for a frontend interview.

Focus on:

var
,
let
, and
const

Scope, closures, and hoisting

Promises,
async/await
, and error handling

The event loop and microtasks versus macrotasks

Array methods such as
map
,
filter
, and
reduce

Objects, references, shallow copies, and deep copies

Practice challenge: Explain the difference between
Promise.all()
and
Promise.allSettled()
.

Promise.all()
rejects when one of its input promises rejects.
Promise.allSettled()
waits until all input promises settle and returns the outcome of each one.

Don't stop at memorizing definitions. Practise explaining when you would use each method in a real application.

Week 2: Focus on React and TypeScript

Once your JavaScript fundamentals are solid, move to React.

Important topics include:

Props, state, and component rendering

useState
,
useEffect
,
useMemo
, and
useCallback

Controlled and uncontrolled components

Context API and Redux

Component composition and reusable hooks

React performance optimization

TypeScript interfaces, types, generics, and utility types

Practice challenge: When would you use
useMemo
instead of
useCallback
?

useMemo
caches a calculated value, while
useCallback
caches a function reference between renders when its dependencies haven't changed.

In an interview, also explain why neither should be added everywhere automatically. First identify a meaningful performance or reference-stability problem.

Week 3: Practise Real-World Frontend Engineering

Interviewers may want to understand how you build and maintain production applications, not just how well you know individual APIs.

Prepare for:

HTML semantics and CSS layouts

Responsive design and accessibility

API integration and loading/error states

Unit testing and component testing

Browser rendering and frontend performance

Server-side rendering and client-side rendering

Microfrontend architecture and module federation

Practice challenge: How would you improve the performance of a React page that renders slowly?

A structured answer might cover measuring the issue first, identifying unnecessary renders, reducing expensive calculations, splitting large bundles, optimizing network requests, and checking whether large lists need virtualization.

The important part is explaining how you would identify the bottleneck before choosing a solution.

 Week 4: Simulate the Interview

Use the final week to combine what you've learned.

Try to complete:

JavaScript coding problems under time limits

A small React machine-coding exercise

A frontend architecture discussion

A review of common technical questions

Mock interviews where you explain your answers aloud

After each session, record the topics you struggled with and revisit them.

 A Simple Daily Study Routine

If you have around two hours a day, try this schedule:

30 minutes: Review concepts.

45 minutes: Solve coding problems.

30 minutes: Practise explaining answers aloud.

15 minutes: Review mistakes and note what to revisit.

Consistency is more valuable than trying to study everything in a single weekend.

 Common Interview Preparation Mistakes

A few mistakes can make preparation less effective:

Memorizing answers without understanding the underlying concepts.

Studying React while neglecting JavaScript fundamentals.

Watching tutorials without writing code yourself.

Ignoring testing, accessibility, and performance.

Never practising answers under interview conditions.

A structured plan helps you identify gaps and measure progress.

Want a More Structured Preparation Guide?

I created Frontend Interview Accelerator — Expanded Edition, a digital e-book designed for frontend developers with 2–5 years of experience.

It brings together frontend interview preparation topics, coding practice, and a 30-day study plan in one resource.

You can explore it here:

Frontend Interview Accelerator — Expanded Edition

The e-book is priced at $4.99. Review the product page to see whether its contents fit your preparation needs.

Disclosure: I'm the creator of this e-book, and I'm sharing it as an optional resource for readers who want a more structured way to prepare.

 Let's Discuss

If you're preparing for a frontend interview, which area do you find most challenging?

JavaScript coding questions

React concepts and hooks

Machine-coding rounds

Frontend system design

Share your experience in the comments. Your answer might help another developer prepare more effectively.
