Why I built a tactile desktop tear-off notepad with Tauri v2 and Rust instead of Electron

Whenever I needed to jot down a quick two-minute thought or run a quick inline calculation, opening full workspace apps felt excessive. I didn't need relational databases, complex workspaces, or 400MB of background RAM usage—I just wanted a scratchpad that sits on the desk like a real piece of paper.

So I built notey.

 What makes it tactile

The physical tear: Tearing off a note plays a crisp audio cue and triggers a confetti pop, then automatically moves the sheet into a searchable local archive so nothing is lost.

Micro-utilities: Inline arithmetic evaluation (typing
18 * 6 =
computes inline), checklists, and PNG snapshot export.

Always-on-top toggle: Keeps ephemeral scratch notes visible while switching between tasks.

Paper aesthetics: Ruled, grid, dotted, and plain paper textures with warm tints.

 Why Tauri v2 + Rust?

Desktop web wrappers often trade system resources for developer convenience. With Tauri v2 and Rust, the binaries stay lightweight, startup is instant, and idle memory usage stays tiny across both platforms.

It is completely free and open-source.

Releases (macOS & Windows): https://github.com/susmitharajendran45/notey/releases/tag/v1.0.29

Demo walkthrough: https://www.loom.com/share/39821f8c48d74febabc8969c176c5db3

Would love to hear your thoughts on building with Tauri v2 or features you value most in a desktop scratchpad!
