Building My First Android App: Turning a Phone Into a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse

Building and publishing my first Android app has been a valuable learning experience. It taught me that creating an app is only one part of the journey. Making it useful, testing it across devices, and helping people discover it are challenges of their own.

My project is PC Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse, published under Mad Byte Devs on Google Play.

The problem I wanted to solve

Sometimes, you need a keyboard or mouse for your computer but don't have one immediately available. Perhaps you're controlling a laptop from a distance, giving a presentation, or simply looking for another way to interact with your PC.

I wanted to build a practical Android utility that could help with these situations by using a phone as an input device.

 What the app does

The app turns a compatible Android phone into a Bluetooth input device.

Its features include:

Keyboard: Type on your computer using your phone.

Mouse and trackpad: Control the cursor from your phone's screen.

Shortcuts and additional controls: Access supported tools for common computer interactions.

No companion PC software: Use Bluetooth HID support on compatible devices instead of installing a separate receiver application on the computer.

Compatibility depends on the phone, computer, operating system, and supported Bluetooth features.

 Publishing was only the beginning

Getting an app published on Google Play feels like a major milestone, especially when you're working independently. But launch day is not the finish line.

After publishing, there is still plenty to learn:

How people discover an app through search.

Which screenshots communicate its value clearly.

What users find confusing or frustrating.

How to prioritize feedback and improve the experience.

How to market a product without relying on paid advertising.

I'm particularly interested in learning how other independent developers approach organic discovery and user retention.

 What I'm focusing on next

My focus is on improving the app, learning from user feedback, and experimenting with sustainable ways to reach people who could genuinely benefit from it.

I'm also interested in how other developers balance building features with distribution. It's easy to spend all your time improving a product and leave marketing until later.

 Try the app

If you need a phone-based Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, or trackpad for a compatible computer, you can find the app here:

PC Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse on Google Play

I'm still learning as an independent developer, so I'd welcome constructive feedback and insights from others who have built and launched their own apps.

For fellow developers: What has worked best for you when getting your first product in front of the right users?
