Best Age for Children and Teenagers to Start Using Social Media

Introduction
The question of when children and teenagers should start using social media platforms is an equivocal topic. Some argue in favour of early exposure aiding digital literacy and social skills; I firmly advocate placing a later age limit for accessing social media platforms. In my opinion, the right age should be at least 16 years old. This belief is based on worries about mental health, privacy dangers, and the importance of maturity required to handle the challenges of online interactions.

A new report from PrivacyHQ.com, reveals that 63 percent of parents allow their pre-teens to use YouTube, 54 percent permit the use of Instagram, and 49 percent let their children use TikTok. Moreover, 64 percent of parents reported their child's desire to become an influencer on Instagram or a YouTube content creator in the future, in comparison 81 percent of those parents surveyed said they would support that decision. As exciting and straightforward as it seems, we should ask whether kids truly grasp what it takes to build a following or realize that not everyone will become influential in the long run.

Here we will discuss the impact of social media, highlighting its potential to shape children’s personal development and societal norms.

Firstly, social media can mould attitudes, minds, mental health, values, and behaviours, having both negative and positive consequences. This is a result of the lack of universal ratings for content on social media platforms, unlike TV, movies, or video games.

Although educational videos and content are available online, we cannot rule out that there is still content inappropriate for children under the age of 13, and this puts children and teens at risk of cyberbullying, discrimination, hate speech, and posts promoting self-harm.

Moreover, exposure to social media before the age of 16 can put children and teenagers at risk of predators. This can result in oversharing, social isolation, and social media over-dependence.

In addition, younger users may not fully comprehend the long-term consequences of sharing personal information online. Waiting until they clock 16 allows for more mature decision-making and a better understanding of privacy settings and online safety measures.

In counterargument, we may agree to the expansion of learning opportunities and digital literacy for older children facilitated by social media homework. This can be cultivated through other means like supervised internet use, educational programs, and guidance from parents and educators.

Additionally, children below the age of 16 can only be introduced to social media platforms if certain policies are put in place. First, the provision of a safe environment or better compliance policy with age restrictions to certain features and websites. Removal of inappropriate content and items, commissioning, publishing, and implementing research on how to make platforms safer, friendlier, and healthier for children of all ages, are good options that should be implemented.

Also, parents must have open and honest conversations with their kids about the healthy use of social media. They must emphasize how social media isn’t real– and can be misleading and highlight the importance of using social media to engage in genuine conversations with friends.

Conclusion

In conclusion, setting the appropriate age for the use of social media to 16 or above prioritizes the well-being and safety of children and young adults which allows for more mature decision-making and reduces psychological risks.

OUTLINE

Introduction

The rise of online food delivery services

Crowding-out effects and market expansions

The staggered entry of online food delivery services

Quantifying incremental vs. diverted sales

Strategies for restaurants

Conclusion

Introduction
With the growth of online meal delivery services, the restaurant industry has undergone tremendous transformation. These services have had major impacts on our dining habits, enabling quick smartphone taps to place food orders. This article investigates the connection between conventional restaurants and Internet meal delivery services, seeking to elucidate the dynamic relationships, market expansions, and disruptive consequences between online and offline sales using empirical research.

The Rise of Online Food Delivery Services
"The rise of online food delivery is fundamentally changing the restaurant industry. It's no longer just about the food and service you provide within the four walls of your restaurant, but also about your ability to reach and engage customers through the digital world." -Danny Meyer (CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group)

Over the past decade, online food delivery services such as Uber Eats, Glovo, DoorDash, Grubhub, and others have become extremely popular. They offer a vast array of culinary choices at the fingertips of consumers, making dining more accessible and efficient.

Crowding-Out Effects and Market Expansions

As online food delivery giants expand their services into different markets, various effects also emerge. On one hand, "crowding-out" effects could negatively impact traditional brick-and-mortar restaurants as more consumers opt for the convenience of delivery services. On the other hand, market expansion occurs as online platforms introduce new revenue streams and extend the reach of restaurants beyond their physical locations.

Some argue that online food delivery services may just "crowd out" existing sales, meaning they could take away business from dine-in or takeout orders by cannibalizing them. However, others believe these services could expand the market by stimulating overall demand for restaurant food, thus attracting new customers who would have yet to dine out otherwise.

The Staggered Entry of Online Food Delivery Services

According to recent studies, the introduction of online delivery platforms led to a significant increase in restaurant sales due to the visibility and accessibility provided by the platforms, which attracted a wide range of customers. However, as more delivery options became available, the market became saturated. Research suggests that the incremental gains seen in the initial phase began to level off, and the negative effects on traditional restaurants without an online presence became noticeable. These restaurants experienced a decrease in foot traffic and dine-in sales.

Quantifying Incremental vs. Diverted Sales

Online food delivery platforms have raised questions on whether they generate new sales or simply take away business from physical restaurants. Studies have shown that some argue that online delivery services create new business by attracting a previously untapped market, which results in an expansion of the customer base. Others suggest that online orders come at the expense of dine-in sales, leading to a redistribution of sales rather than an expansion, resulting in a decline in traditional revenue streams for restaurants that rely heavily on dine-in customers.

(Source: statista.com)

A few years ago, there was a fierce battle for national market dominance between DoorDash and Uber Eats; today, not so much. Although Uber Eats is internationally the best-known restaurant, the situation is very different in the United States.
By 2023, DoorDash now control 65% of the US market for online meal delivery services, with Uber Eats coming in second with 23% of the market share. Whereas, other apps’ market share is followed by Grubhub (9%), Postmates (2%), and others (1%).

Strategies for Restaurants

Following the digital transformation era, traditional restaurants are faced with the need to reassess their strategies. Nowadays, embracing technology is not an option, but a necessity. Here are some key strategies that restaurants should focus on to stay competitive and grow:

Optimizing Online Presence: Establishing an online presence is important. Restaurants should collaborate with multiple delivery platforms, invest in user-friendly websites and mobile apps, and leverage social media for marketing and engagement.

Culinary Innovation: To stand out in the crowded online marketplace, restaurants must focus on culinary innovation. Unique and appealing menu offerings can attract a range of customers, including those seeking new and exciting dining experiences.

Fig. 2: Menu Template

Efficient Delivery Logistics: Timely and efficient delivery services are essential for customer satisfaction. Restaurants need to invest in streamlined logistics, ensuring food quality is maintained during transit and deliveries are made within the promised time frame.

Fig. 3: A delivery Logistics concept illustration

Collaborative Partnerships: Building strategic partnerships with online delivery platforms can be mutually beneficial. Restaurants can tap into the platforms' expansive user base, while the platforms benefit from an enriched and diverse array of culinary choices.

Fig. 4: Online Delivery Platform Illustration

Conclusion

Online food delivery services have a significant impact on restaurant sales, and the long-term effects depend on how both online and traditional establishments adapt to the changing landscape. Restaurants that embrace digital transformation, leverage technology for growth, and focus on customer-centric strategies are likely to thrive in this new era of dining. The relationship between online food delivery services and traditional restaurants will continue to shape the future of how we enjoy our favourite cuisines.

  TABLE OF CONTENT

1. Introduction
2. Tips and Techniques
3. Search Engine Optimization
4. Conclusion

Technical writing is an art that needs precision and clarity. It also needs the ability to make the audience understand. Technical writing is a link between complex concepts and the end-user. It makes information easier to understand. In this article, we will discuss several techniques and tips to improve clarity and precision in technical writing.

Know Who Your Audience Is

The first rule of technical writing is to have a good understanding of your intended audience. Before you start writing, you should consider who will be reading your document. The more information you have about your audience, the better you can analyse it. This will help you find your audience. You'll understand their goals and expectations for the document. You'll also learn about their background, knowledge, and experience. As well as their culture and how they like to communicate. It is important to set the language, tone, and level of detail according to your audience's needs.

Organise information

When writing technical documents, it is important to present complex information in a way that is easy to follow. Achieving this requires consistency, simplicity, and interactivity. To achieve this, you should prepare a layout or an outline that includes a logical flow of ideas. Use headings, subheadings, and bullet points to break down information into easy-to-understand chunks. Also, consider the structure of your document. Make sure each section builds on the last.

Use clear and concise language, and craft readable sentences

The primary purpose of technical writing should be to educate and persuade the audience, rather than to entertain or inspire them. To achieve this goal, use simple language and avoid using unnecessary words. You should aim to convey information directly and concisely, with around 15-20 words per sentence. Avoid using too much jargon and prefer using active voice as it makes your writing clearer and easier to understand.

Define technical terms and acronyms

If your document has technical jargon or industry-specific terms, you must define and explain them. You can create a glossary if necessary and provide context for readers who may not be familiar with the specialized vocabulary. By doing so, you can ensure that a wider audience understands your document.

Visual aids enhance understanding

Incorporating visual elements such as diagrams, figures, charts, and illustrations enhances comprehension. A well-designed visual aid conveys complex information more than paragraphs of text. Using visuals to complement written content provides a visual representation of concepts.

Review and revise

After completing a draft, it's important to take the time to review and revise it. During this process, you should look for errors. These include grammar mistakes, inconsistencies, and chances to improve the text. Also, it's good to have someone else review your work. This adds validation and ensures the document is error-free and serves its purpose.

Use style guides

Many consider style guides to be reliable sources that offer editing guidelines for materials. They offer rules for formatting and language usage, ensuring consistency throughout a document. Some examples of style guides include the Chicago Manual of Style and the Microsoft Manual of Style. Use small-scale local style guides. They provide quick answers to common problems. Compiling a stylesheet each time you edit is also a good practice. It lists recurring errors encountered while editing.

Be mindful of formatting

Consistent fonts, font sizes, spacing, headers, and footers give context. They also make long documents look professional.

Keep it updated

You must keep your technical docs up to date. This is to show changes in software, processes, or procedures. By doing so, users will have access to the most relevant and dependable information.

Test your document

To improve your writing or communication, conduct surveys or interviews. Use them to determine your audience's technical skills. Feedback from users and experts can be valuable. It provides insights for improvement. To avoid plagiarism, always use quotes and proper citation and referencing. You can also use plagiarism detection software, such as Grammarly. It ensures proper paraphrasing and review of your documents.

Tools

Technical writing software is necessary for proper technical writing. Word processors, like Microsoft Word and Google Docs, are useful. So are documentation tools, like MadCap Flare and Adobe FrameMaker. Also useful are markdown editors, such as Typora, and collaboration tools, like Notion.

Search engine optimization

To enhance the visibility of your content in search engines, deploy keywords. You can use tools like Google Keyword Planner, SEMrush, or Ahrefs to identify relevant keywords related to your topic. Try to incorporate these keywords into your title tags, meta descriptions, and headers for largest impact. Make sure to create content that answers the user's question. This will position you as an authority in your field.

Conclusion

To master the art of technical writing, one must combine clarity, precision, and an understanding of the audience. Technical writers do this by organizing information, using clear language, adding visuals, and following best practices. Technical writing is a valuable skill to have in situations where information is an important asset. It opens doors to effective communication and collaboration by enabling you to convey information.

  TABLE OF CONTENT

1. Understanding CSS Colour Properties
2. A Comprehensive Overview of Background Properties
3. Optimization Strategies for Colour and Backgrounds
4. Methodology for research
5. Challenges and Consideration
6. Conclusion and References

Web design relies on the effective use of Colours and Backgrounds. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) do this. This proposal explores advanced CSS techniques for enhancing web design by incorporating complex colour schemes and backgrounds, ensuring responsiveness and accessibility, and enhancing the visual appeal and user experience of web applications.

What is CSS? CSS is a stylesheet language that defines the presentation of HTML or XML documents, dictating how elements should appear on various media, but it is not a programming or markup language.

Anatomy of a CSS rule set

CSS rulesets are instructions for styling HTML elements. They are created by selecting an element and specifying its properties, such as colour, font size, or background colour, which can be changed.
Code sample:

h1{
color: #ffffff;
font-size:5px;
}

Impact of Backgrounds on User Experience

Backgrounds significantly impact user experience (UX) in web design, influencing the look and feel of a website or application. They set the tone, convey information, and enhance usability. Choosing the right text and background colours ensures readable content and contributes to the emotional tone of the website. Backgrounds should fit different screen sizes for a good experience across devices.

Colour Spaces and Formats

HSL and RGBA are popular colour spaces in modern web design. HSL represents the colour itself, while RGBA represents the standard RGB representation. HEX format concisely represents RGB values, ideal for maintaining consistent brand colours across platforms. RGBA provides precise control over individual colour channels, allowing for detailed adjustments. Both spaces offer unmatched flexibility, allowing designers to create dynamic, layered designs while ensuring stability and consistency for maintainability.

Colour Gradients

Colour gradients are a powerful design tool that adds depth and visual interest to backgrounds. They can be linear or radial, creating smooth transitions between colours. Linear gradients create a straight-line transition, while radial gradients create a circular or elliptical transition. Radial gradients can be used to emphasize elements or create a spotlight effect.

Linear Gradient
CSS code:

.linear-gradient {
  background: linear-gradient (to right, #ff7e5f, #feb47b, #ffca95);
}

Radial Gradient
CSS code:

.radial-gradient {
  background: radial-gradient (circle at top right, #4e54c8, #8f94fb, #4e54c8)
}

Text and Background Contrast
High contrast improves text legibility, allowing users to read content. Adequate contrast reduces eye fatigue, enhancing the reading experience. WCAG defines least contrast ratios based on text size and weight. Common requirements include:

a. Large Text (18.67px and above, bold): Least contrast ratio of 3:1

b. Small Text (below 18.67px, non-bold): Least contrast ratio of 4.5:1

Image Backgrounds

Image background techniques include parallax effects, image overlays, and responsive strategies. Parallax effects involve moving background elements at different speeds, creating depth and immersion. Overlays increase contrast and provide a cohesive design. Responsive strategies adapt images to different screen sizes and devices, ensuring a consistent experience. To implement these techniques, select images with distinct foreground and background elements, use libraries like ScrollMagic or AOS, and adjust opacity and contrast.

CSS Patterns

CSS patterns are repeating designs applied to backgrounds, creating a cohesive web content backdrop. They can be implemented using background properties, background-repeat, gradients, subtle patterns, and geometric shapes.

CSS Textures

CSS textures mimic real textures using images or gradients, adding a tactile feel to designs. They can be layered, adjusted for opacity, and maintained for consistency and text readability.

Depth and Layering

CSS layering and stacking techniques enhance design depth by controlling element stacking order, combining textures with parallax scrolling, overlaying textures on images or gradients, and adding faint box shadows.

Background Effects

These techniques add depth, sophistication, and a touch of creativity to the design.

A. Background Blur Effect: Background blur creates a sense of depth by making elements in the foreground stand out. It is particularly effective for highlighting key content.

Implementation Steps

Use the backdrop-filter property to apply a blur effect to the background.

CSS code:

.blurred-background {
  backdrop-filter: blur (8px);
}

use the filter property with the blur function.

Apply background blur to hero sections to draw attention to key messages and use blur for modals or popups to emphasize the foreground content.
CSS code:

.blurred-background {
  filter: blur(8px);
}

B. Image Filters: CSS filters let you change image characteristics. They create effects like saturation, contrast, and brightness.

Implementation Steps

Apply filters to the background image.

CSS code:

.filtered-background {
  filter: grayscale(50%) contrast(120%) brightness(80%);
}

Overlay a pseudo-element with filters on top of the background.

CSS code:

.overlay-filter {
  position: relative;
}
.overlay-filter::before {
  content : "";
  position : absolute;
  top: 0;
  right: 0;
  bottom: 0;
  left: 0;
  background: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2);
  filter: blur(4px);
}

Apply filters to avoid overwhelming the background maintaining consistency in filter application for a cohesive visual style.

C. Colour Overlays: Colour overlays can alter the mood of an image, creating a cohesive colour scheme or enhancing visual appeal.

Implementation Steps

Overlay a coloured pseudo-element on the background.

CSS code:

.color-overlay {
  position: relative;
}
.color-overlay::before {
  content: "";
  position: absolute;
  top: 0;
  right: 0;
  bottom: 0;
  left: 0;
  background: #3498db;
  opacity: 0.7;
}

Use the background-blend-mode property for more blending options.

CSS code:

.color-overlay {
  background: url('background-image.jpg') center/cover;
  background-color: #e74c3c;
  mix-blend-mode: overlay;
}

Apply colour overlays to highlight specific sections and use overlays for a consistent look in image galleries.

Colour Accessibility

Designing for inclusivity and accessibility involves careful colour choices, accessibility standards, clear text labels, and ARIA roles. Including easy-to-use colours, descriptive text labels, and paired icons or symbols enhances the user experience, especially for those with colour blindness.

Implementation Strategies

I. CSS Styling

CSS code:

.accessible-element {
  background-color: #f0f0f0;
  color: #333;
  border: 1px solid #ddd;
  padding: 10px;
}

II. ARIA Roles

html

<button role="button" aria-label="Submit Form">
  Click Here
</button>

Background Contrast and Readability

To improve readability, adhere to WCAG contrast ratio recommendations, use bold or semi-bold fonts, and ensure large text for comfortable reading. Implement media queries to adjust contrast for different screen sizes, confirm text-to-speech compatibility, and use semantic HTML elements for proper screen reader interpretation. Maintain brand consistency, adapt colour schemes to different screens, and ensure accessibility standards on various devices.

Considerations for Different Devices

Simplify colour palettes for mobile devices, tablets, and desktops to prevent visual clutter, balance colour choices for intermediate sizes, and optimize touch and mouse interaction for larger screens.

Strategies for Responsive Colour Schemes

A. CSS Media Queries

CSS code:

@media screen and (max-width: 600px) {
  body {
    background-color: #f8f8f8;
    color: #333;
  }
}
@media screen and (min-width: 601px) and (max-width: 1024px) {
  body {
    background-color: #ececec;
    color: #444;
  }
}
@media screen and (min-width: 1025px) {
  body {
    background-color: #f5f5f5;
    color: #555;
  }
}

B. Dynamic Colour Adjustments

Use JavaScript to adjust colours based on the device's characteristics. Allow users to choose a colour scheme based on their preferences. Using responsive colour schemes is key. They deliver a smooth and nice experience on many devices. Designers can make harmonious colour schemes. They do this by considering the traits of mobiles, tablets, and desktops. They should use CSS media queries and make dynamic adjustments. Testing and user feedback are vital. They ensure that responsive colours work. They also contribute to a positive user experience.

Responsive Backgrounds

Responsive web design involves adjusting backgrounds to different viewport sizes, maintaining brand identity, and ensuring text readability. Balance aesthetics and usability, using lightweight assets for smaller screens. Optimize background images for larger screens without compromising loading times. Use background-size, background-position, and background-repeat to adapt backgrounds for complex designs.

CSS code:

@media screen and (max-width: 600px)
{ body {
background-color: #f8f8f8;
}
}
@media screen and (min-width: 601px) and (max-width: 1024px) {
body {
background-color: #ececec;
}
}
@media screen and (min-width: 1025px) {
body {
background-color: #f5f5f5;
}
}

Research and Analysis

Understanding current colour and background trends is crucial for creating appealing designs. To achieve this, conduct a competitor analysis, including selecting a diverse set of competitors, analysing their colour palette, and analysing their background styles. Identify dominant trends and patterns, and ensure the colours and backgrounds work well on all devices and screens. Current trends include gradients, duotones, muted tones, and dark mode options. Background trends include abstract patterns, minimalistic backgrounds, and animated backgrounds. Opportunities for improvement include adding unique differentiations, enhancing consistency across platforms, and optimizing designs for users with visual impairments.

Development

Modular CSS architecture involves breaking down styles into modular components for reusability and maintainability. It uses BEM for clear naming conventions, and Flexbox and Grid Layout for responsive and adaptive layouts. CSS variables create dynamic styles and consistent theming. Transitions and animations allow smooth interactions and customization. Responsive typography and vertical rhythm improve readability. Advanced selectors target specific states or elements. CSS Grid provides fine-grained layout control and named grid areas for clarity.

*Incorporating Feedback Loops   *

Regular code reviews, adherence to coding standards, user testing, and user feedback are essential for improving CSS implementations. These processes ensure compatibility, performance, and user satisfaction, while also providing valuable insights into user behaviour and design elements.

Continuous Improvement Strategies

Implement version control systems for CSS branching and semantic versioning for clear tracking. Automated testing, including CSS linting and visual regression testing, catches potential errors and enforces coding standards. Continuously update knowledge of new CSS features and best practices within the team.

Advanced CSS Techniques

Utilize Flexbox and Grid layouts for efficient design structures, create adaptive grids for different screen sizes, use CSS variables for consistency, apply transitions and animations, use viewport units for responsive font sizes, use custom selectors and pseudo-elements for targeted styling, and use CSS grid frameworks for streamlined layout creation and browser compatibility. These techniques ensure readability across devices, smooth state changes, and engaging animations.

Conclusion

Advanced CSS techniques for colours and backgrounds enhance web design aesthetics, accessibility, and user experience, ensuring a good experience for all users. These techniques improve website appearance and stand out in today's digital landscape, making it stand out in the competition.

Development Team

Front-End Developers, Designers, and Project Managers.

Postman is a widely used API development tool and integrating its capabilities into Visual Studio Code (VSCode) can streamline your workflow. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of installing the Postman extension on VSCode for efficient API testing and development.

Before proceeding, ensure you have the following prerequisites:

Visual Studio Code: Make sure you have VSCode installed on your device. You can download it from https://code.visualstudio.com/

Postman Account: You need a Postman account. If you don't have one, sign up at postman.

Let’s get started:

Open VSCode

Launch Visual Studio Code on your device.

Navigate to Extensions

Click on the Extensions icon in the Activity Bar on the side of the window or use the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + X (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Shift + X (Mac) to open the Extensions view.

Search for Postman

In the Extensions view, type "Postman" into the search bar. Look for the official Postman extension by Postman Inc.

Install the Extension

Click on the "Install" button next to the Postman extension. This will start the installation process.

Reload VSCode

After the installation is complete, you may need to reload VSCode to activate the extension. You can do this by clicking the "Reload" button that appears after installation or simply restarting VSCode.

Sign in to Postman Account

Once VSCode has been reloaded, open a new or existing project. If you haven't signed in to your Postman account within VSCode, you may be prompted to do so. Sign in using your Postman credentials.

Configure Postman Settings (Optional)

Go to the Settings in VSCode (Ctrl +, or Cmd +,), search for "Postman", and explore the extension settings. Configure any preferences according to your requirements.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed the Postman extension on Visual Studio Code. You can now seamlessly integrate Postman's powerful API testing and development features directly into your VSCode environment.

FAQs

Q: Do I need a Postman account to use the extension?

A: Yes, a Postman account is required to sign in and fully utilize the Postman extension features.

Q: Can I use the Postman extension without installing the Postman desktop app?

A: Yes, the Postman extension for VSCode is designed to work independently of the desktop app. However, having both installed offers a more comprehensive API development environment.

Q: How do I update the Postman extension?

A: VSCode will automatically handle extension updates. If there are new updates available, VSCode will prompt you to install them.
