Yield was also improved, as the highest amount of essential oils was produced by plants treated with Cs-Se NPs. Generally, the greatest improvement in measured parameters under saline conditions was obtained by treating plants with 20 mg L-1 Cs-Se NPs, which significantly increased salinity tolerance in bitter melon plants.3D printing has exponentially grown in popularity due to the personalization of each printed part it offers, making it extremely beneficial for the very demanding biomedical industry. This technique has been extensively developed and optimized and the advances that now reside in the development of new materials suitable for 3D printing, which may open the door to new applications. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is the most commonly used 3D printing technique. However, filaments suitable for FDM must meet certain criteria for a successful printing process and thus the optimization of their properties in often necessary. The aim of this work was to prepare a flexible and printable polyurethane filament parting from a biocompatible waterborne polyurethane, which shows potential for biomedical applications. GS-4997 mw In order to improve filament properties and printability, cellulose nanofibers and graphene were employed to prepare polyurethane based nanocomposites. Prepared nanocomposite filaments showed altered properties which directly impacted their printability. Graphene containing nanocomposites presented sound enough thermal and mechanical properties for a good printing process. Moreover, these filaments were employed in FDM to obtained 3D printed parts, which showed good shape fidelity. Properties exhibited by polyurethane and graphene filaments show potential to be used in biomedical applications.Glioblastoma is the most common form of primary brain tumour in adults. For more than a decade, conventional treatment has produced a relatively modest improvement in the overall survival of glioblastoma patients. The immunosuppressive mechanisms employed by neoplastic and non-neoplastic cells within the tumour can limit treatment efficacy, and this can include the secretion of immunosuppressive cytokines and chemokines. These factors can play a significant role in immune modulation, thus disabling anti-tumour responses and contributing to tumour progression. Here, we review the complex interplay between populations of immune and tumour cells together with defined contributions by key cytokines and chemokines to these intercellular interactions. Understanding how these tumour-derived factors facilitate the crosstalk between cells may identify molecular candidates for potential immunotherapeutic targeting, which may enable better tumour control and improved patient survival. There are important individual differences in adaptation and reactivity to stressful challenges. Being subjected to strict social confinement is a distressful psychological experience leading to reduced emotional well-being, but it is not known how it can affect the cognitive and empathic tendencies of different individuals. Cortisol, a key glucocorticoid in humans, is a strong modulator of brain function, behavior, and cognition, and the diurnal cortisol rhythm has been postulated to interact with environmental stressors to predict stress adaptation. The present study investigates in 45 young adults (21.09 years old, SD = 6.42) whether pre-pandemic diurnal cortisol indices, overall diurnal cortisol secretion (AUCg) and cortisol awakening response (CAR) can predict individuals' differential susceptibility to the impact of strict social confinement during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on working memory, empathy, and perceived stress. We observed that, following long-term home confinement, there was an increase in subjects' perceived stress and cognitive empathy scores, as well as an improvement in visuospatial working memory. Moreover, during confinement, resilient coping moderated the relationship between perceived stress scores and pre-pandemic AUCg and CAR. In addition, in mediation models, we observed a direct effect of AUCg and an indirect effect of both CAR and AUCg, on change in perceived self-efficacy. These effects were parallelly mediated by the increase in working memory span and cognitive empathy. In summary, our findings reveal the role of the diurnal pattern of cortisol in predicting the emotional impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting a potential biomarker for the identification of at-risk groups following public health crises.
Rehabilitation for unilateral spatial neglect (USN) using prism adaptation (PA) is one of the most widely used methods, and the effectiveness of PA is well-evidenced. Although the effect of PA generalized various neglect symptoms, the effectiveness for some aspects of neglect is not fully proven. The Catherine Bergego Scale (CBS) was developed to identify problems with the activities of daily living (ADL) caused by USN. The CBS is composed of 10 observation assessments and a self-assessment questionnaire. To assess the self-awareness of USN, the anosognosia score is calculated as the difference between the observational scores and the self-assessment scores. To investigate how PA affects ADL and self-awareness in subacute USN patients during rehabilitation, we analyzed each item of the CBS and self-awareness from a randomized, controlled trial (RCT) that we previously conducted (Mizuno et al., 2011).

A double-masked randomized, controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of a 2-week PA therapy on USN in 8 hospitals in Japan. We compared each item of the CBS, anosognosia score, and absolute value of the anosognosia score between the prism group and the control group.

Two of ten items (gaze orientation and exploration of personal belongings) were significantly improved in the prism group compared with those in the control group. The absolute value of the anosognosia score was significantly improved by PA.

Improvement of oculomotor exploration by PA may generalize the behavioral level in a daily living environment. This study suggested that PA could accelerate the self-awareness of neglect during subacute rehabilitation.
Over the past two decades, various factors have led to fewer opportunities for hands-on learning in the operating room among orthopaedic surgery trainees. Innovative training platforms using anatomic models, cadaveric specimens, and augmented reality have been devised to address this deficiency in surgical training, but such training tools are often costly with limited accessibility. Cognitive training is a low-cost training technique that improves physical performance by refining the way in which information is mentally processed and has long been used by professional athletes and world-class musicians. More recently, cognitive training tools have been developed for several orthopaedic surgery procedures, but the overall utility of cognitive training in orthopaedic surgery remains unknown.

The purpose of this study was to review the existing literature regarding the use of cognitive training in orthopaedic surgery and to summarize the results of investigations comparing cognitive training tools with othenitive training represents a promising, low-cost adjunct to traditional orthopaedic surgery training. Further efforts should be directed at developing and evaluating additional cognitive training tools for orthopaedic surgery trainees.
The objective of this scoping review is to explore existing literature about nurse practitioners' competencies and scope of practice in primary health care in order to examine and conceptually map the evidence and identify gaps in the literature.

To meet growing health care needs, current primary health care models have expanded to include nurse practitioners. The integration of nurse practitioners in primary health care is challenging. This is mainly due to the lack of a unified definition of the role, competencies, or clear criteria to determine scope of practice.

This scoping review will consider studies addressing nurse practitioner practice in primary health care. The focus lies on nurse practitioner competencies (eg, core competencies or practice activities) and scope of practice (eg, areas of responsibility or legally defined professional boundaries). Studies that were conducted in primary health care settings in rural, urban, and suburban regions where nurse practitioners are employed will be inextracted data will be presented in tables or graphs, with an accompanying narrative summary.
This scoping review aims to compare strategies for measuring prescription medication switching with pharmacy claims data, with a focus on psychotropic vs non-psychotropic medications.

Medication switching (ie, the replacement of one medication for another) is common and occurs due to several factors (such as adverse effects to a specific medication). In pharmacoepidemiology studies that use pharmacy claims data, it is important to identify and account for switches; however, due to data limitations and lack of a methodological standard, this can be challenging. The aim of this scoping review is to describe how studies have previously measured medication switching with pharmacy claims data in order to create a repository of common strategies and highlight areas for future research.

This review will include studies that have used pharmacy claims data to measure medication switching as their primary independent or dependent variable. Studies conducted at the individual level (ie, not ecological), published hed with the assistance of a health sciences research librarian. Two reviewers will independently screen titles, abstracts, and full-text articles. Strategies for measuring medication switching will be narratively described and summarized overall and by broad medication class.
This network meta-analysis aims to rank the best postoperative drug regimen to control inflammatory complications related to mandibular third molar surgery.

Many studies of oral drugs have been proposed to control postoperative inflammatory complications after third molar surgeries with inconclusive results. A systematic review with network meta-analysis in this field may clarify the best therapeutic protocol for practice in dentistry.

This review will consider randomized clinical trials that included healthy adult patients or those who had treated and controlled systemic diseases; asymptomatic patients who were free of acute infection or inflammation at the surgical site immediately before third molar surgery; and patients submitted to surgical removal of one lower third molar at a time in which they have received oral anti-inflammatory and/or analgesics in the postoperative moment. The outcomes are pain, edema, trismus, and adverse effects.

Sources of published studies, unpublished studies, and gray literature will be searched without time or language restrictions. 4SC-202 inhibitor Titles and abstracts of all search results will be screened by two independent reviewers. The full text of potentially relevant studies will be assessed. Methodological quality of the included studies will be performed using the JBI checklist for experimental studies. Data related to specific details about the population, study methods, interventions, and outcomes will be extracted from the included studies. The findings will be presented in a narrative form and polled in network meta-analysis, when possible.

To evaluate and summarize the level of evidence for the immediate, short-term, and long-term effects of game-based rehabilitation on upper limb function in adults within the first six months following stroke.

A game-based intervention is a valuable therapeutic tool for incorporating principles of motor learning and neuroplasticity in the rehabilitation of upper limb function post-stroke. Most of the existing reviews on game-based rehabilitation are focused on the chronic phase of stroke. However, as maximum upper limb motor recovery occurs in the first six months after stroke, further exploration of the effects of game-based rehabilitation in this phase is necessary.

We will include randomized clinical trials assessing the immediate, short-term, and long-term effects of game-based rehabilitation on upper limb function in adults within the first six months following stroke.

The systematic review will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) checklist and JBI methodology for systematic reviews of effectiveness.4SC-202 inhibitor

BACKGROUND New-onset diabetes after transplantation (NODAT) is a complication of solid organ transplantation. We sought to determine the extent to which NODAT goes undiagnosed over the course of 1 year following transplantation, analyze missed or later-diagnosed cases of NODAT due to poor hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) collection, and to estimate the impact that improved NODAT screening metrics may have on long-term outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a retrospective study utilizing 3 datasets from a single center on kidney, liver, and heart transplantation patients. Retrospective analysis was supplemented with an imputation procedure to account for missing data and project outcomes under perfect information. In addition, the data were used to inform a simulation model used to estimate life expectancy and cost-effectiveness of a hypothetical intervention. RESULTS Estimates of NODAT incidence increased from 27% to 31% in kidney transplantation patients, from 31% to 40% in liver transplantation patients, and from 45% to 67% in heart transplantation patients, when HbA1c and FBG were assumed to be collected perfectly at all points. selleck products Perfect screening for kidney transplantation patients was cost-saving, while perfect screening for liver and heart transplantation patients was cost-effective at a willingness-to-pay threshold of $100 000 per life-year. CONCLUSIONS Improved collection of HbA1c and FBG is a cost-effective method for detecting many additional cases of NODAT within the first year alone. Additional research into both improved glucometric monitoring as well as effective strategies for mitigating NODAT risk will become increasingly important to improve health in this population.BACKGROUND Cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes are necessary for the production or metabolism of fetal sex hormones during pregnancy. The second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D 4D) is formed in the early stage of human fetal development and considered an indicator reflecting prenatal sex steroids levels. We explored the association between 2D 4D and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of CYP. MATERIAL AND METHODS Correlation analysis between 2D 4D and 8 SNPs, rs2687133 (CPY3A7), rs7173655 (CYP11A1), rs1004467, rs17115149, and rs2486758 (CYP17A1), and rs4646, rs2255192, rs4275794 (CYP19A1), was performed using data from 426 female and 412 male Chinese university students. SNP genotyping was conducted using PCR. Digit lengths were photographed and measured by image processing software. RESULTS rs2486758 (CYP17A1) correlated with left hand 2D 4D in men (P=0.026), and rs1004467 (CYP17A1) correlated with right hand 2D 4D in men (P=0.008) and the whole population (P=0.032). In men, allele G rs1004467 decreased right hand 2D 4D, while allele C of rs2486758 increased left hand 2D 4D. In women, left hand 2D 4D was higher in genotypes with allele A of SNP rs4646 (CYP19A1) under the dominant genetic model; female DR-L was higher in genotypes with allele T of rs17115149 (CYP11A1). SNPs rs2687133 (CYP3A7) and rs1004467 (CYP17A1) were significantly correlated with right hand 2D 4D (P=0.0107). CONCLUSIONS SNPs rs1004467 and rs2486758 of CYP17A1 are significant in the relationship between 2D 4D and CYP gene polymorphisms under different conditions. SNP interactions between CYP genes probably impact 2D 4D. The correlation between 2D 4D and some sex hormone-related diseases may be due to the effect of CYP variants on the 2 phenotypes. The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) after liver transplantation is 0.5%-4%. Laparoscopic surgery is the standard-of-care treatment, however it is rarely performed in patients who had previously undergone liver transplantation. Few reports exist regarding minimally invasive surgery in such context and none about laparoscopic right colectomy. We present the case of a 64-year-old female with a history of liver transplantation in 2001 and who developed a right-sided CRC. A laparoscopic right colectomy was successfully performed, and the post-operative course was uneventful. Given the known benefits, we believe that laparoscopic approach should be considered in such patients.Postpartum retroperitoneal or pelvic haematomas are rare after vaginal delivery. The clinical presentation can vary from being an incidental finding to the development of life-threatening bleeding. Due to their rarity, there are no established guidelines for the management of these postpartum haematomas. The reported treatments vary from watchful observation to emergent laparotomy. We report a case of postpartum pre-sacral haematoma after uneventful vaginal delivery managed successfully by laparoscopic drainage after the failure of conservative treatment.Horseshoe kidney (HSK) is a rare congenital malformation of the kidneys and is commonly associated with other anomalies of the renovascular and ureteropelvic systems. These anomalies present a surgical challenge, especially for surgeries involving the retroperitoneum. We present the case of a 56-year-old male patient with biopsy-proven rectal cancer who had completed neoadjuvant chemoradiation and was planned for curative resection. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the abdomen and pelvis revealed the presence of an HSK. Reconstructed three-dimensional (3D) images of the renal vasculature revealed the presence of an accessory renal artery originating directly from the aorta and supplying the isthmus of the HSK without any other venous or ureteral anomalies. Laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection with total mesorectal excision was done without any untoward complications. The presence of HSK per se is not a contraindication for laparoscopic operations involving the retroperitoneum. Pre-operative 3D CECT helps to identify the presence of anatomical variations and guides surgical resection.Choledochal cysts can present with abdominal pain, jaundice and stones.MRI is the standard imaging tool and the type of biliary enteric anastomosis depends on the cyst type.
Laparoscopic-Warshaw technique (lap-WT) may be selected as a function-preserving operation for malignant border lesions in the tail region of the pancreas. However, previous reports showed that there are complications such as infection and abscess formation due to lack of blood flow to the spleen after surgery. To overcome the problems, we have performed real-time vessel navigation by using indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence during lap-WT.

We report our experience of three patients with pancreatic tumour who underwent real-time vessel navigation during lap-WT at Hokkaido University from May 2017 to September 2018.

The median operating time was 339 min (174-420). The median intraoperative bleeding was 150 ml (0-480). There were no incidences of complications. There were no cases with post-operative spleen ischaemia or abscess formation and varices formation.

We believe that laparoscopic real-time vessel navigation using indocyanine green fluorescence during lap-WT could contribute in reducing the post-operative spleen-related complications.selleck products

Biradicaloids attract attention as a novel class of reagents that can activate small molecules such as H2 , ethylene and CO2 . Herein, we study activation of parahydrogen (nuclear spin-0 isomer of H2 ) by a number of 4- and 5-membered pnictogen biradicaloids based on hetero-cyclobutanediyl [X(μ-NTer)2 Z] and hetero-cyclopentanediyl [X(μ-NTer)2 ZC(NDmp)] moieties (X,Z=P,As; Ter=2,6-Mes2 -C6 H3 , Dmp=2,6-Me2 -C6 H3 ). The concerted mechanism of this reaction allowed observing strong nuclear spin hyperpolarization effects in 1 H and 31 P NMR experiments. Signal enhancements from two to four orders of magnitude were detected at 9.4 T depending on the structure. It is demonstrated that 4-membered biradicaloids activate H2 reversibly, leading to SABRE (signal amplification by reversible exchange) hyperpolarization of biradicaloids themselves and their H2 adducts. In contrast, the 5-membered counterparts demonstrate rather irreversible parahydrogen activation resulting in hyperpolarized H2 adducts only. Kinetic measurements provided parameters to support experimental observations.Gastrointestinal symptoms and liver injury are common in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, profiles of different pharmaceutical interventions used are relatively underexplored. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been increasingly used for patients with COVID-19, but the efficacy of CHM used in COVID-19 on gastrointestinal symptoms and liver functions has not been well studied with definitive results based on the updated studies. The present study aimed at testing the efficacy of CHM on digestive symptoms and liver function (primary outcomes), the aggravation of COVID-19, and the time to viral assay conversion (secondary outcomes), among patients with COVID-19, compared with standard pharmacotherapy. The literature search was undertaken in 11 electronic databases from December 1, 2019 up to November 8, 2020. Appraisal of the evidence was conducted with Cochrane risk of bias tool or Newcastle Ottawa Scale. A random-effects model or subgroup analysis was conducted when significant heterogeneity was identified in the meta-analysis. The certainty of the evidence was assessed with the grading of recommendations assessment, development, and evaluation approach. Forty-eight included trials involving 4,704 participants were included. 4SC-202 mouse Meta-analyses favored CHM plus standard pharmacotherapy for COVID-19 on reducing the aggravation of COVID-19 and the time to viral assay conversion compared with standard pharmacotherapy. However, the present CHM as a complementary therapy for treating COVID-19 may not be beneficial for improving most gastrointestinal symptoms and liver function based on the current evidence. More well-conducted trials are warranted to confirm the potential efficacy of CHM furtherly.A series of triphenylethylene-naphthalimide (TPE-naph) conjugates was synthesized by a molecular hybridization technique, and their anticancer activity was evaluated in vitro on 60 human cancer cell lines through their cytotoxicity. The ratios of E and Z isomers were determined on the basis of HPLC methodology and NMR spectroscopy. The structure-activity relationship for anticancer activity was deduced on the basis of the nature and bulkiness of the amine attached to the C-4 position of the naphthalene ring. Experimental and molecular modeling studies of the most active TPE-naph conjugate bearing a morpholinyl group showed that it was able to inhibit topoisomerase-II (TOPO-II) as a possible intracellular target. Moreover, the transportation behavior of TPE-naph conjugate towards human serum albumin (HSA) indicated efficient binding affinity. The steady-state and time-dependent fluorescent results suggested that this conjugate quenched HSA significantly through static as well as dynamic quenching. Thus, this report discloses the scope of triphenylethylene-naphthalimide (TPE-naph) conjugates as efficient anticancer agents.Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) has received extensive attention in characterizing alkali-ion battery materials because it is highly sensitive for probing the local environment and dynamic information of atoms/ions. However, precise spectral assignment cannot be carried out by conventional DFT for high-rate battery materials at room temperature. Herein, combining DFT calculation of paramagnetic shift and deep potential molecular dynamics (DPMD) simulation to achieve the converged Na+ distribution at hundreds of nanoseconds, we obtain the statistically averaged paramagnetic shift, which is in excellent agreement with ssNMR measurements. Two 23 Na shifts induced by different stacking sequences of transition metal layers are revealed in the fast chemically exchanged NMR spectra of P2-type Na2/3 (Mg1/3 Mn2/3 )O2 for the first time. This DPMD simulation auxiliary protocol can be beneficial to a wide range of ssNMR analysis in fast chemically exchanged material systems.Although light is the driving force of photosynthesis, excessive light can be harmful. One of the main processes that limits photosynthesis is photoinhibition, the process of light-induced photodamage. When the absorbed light exceeds the amount that is dissipated by photosynthetic electron flow and other processes, damaging radicals are formed that mostly inactivate photosystem II (PSII). Damaged PSII must be replaced by a newly repaired complex in order to preserve full photosynthetic activity. Chlorella ohadii is a green microalga, isolated from biological desert soil crusts, that thrives under extreme high light and is highly resistant to photoinhibition. Therefore, C. ohadii is an ideal model for studying the molecular mechanisms underlying protection against photoinhibition. Comparison of the thylakoids of C. ohadii cells that were grown under low light versus extreme high light intensities found that the alga employs all three known photoinhibition protection mechanisms (i) massive reduction of the PSII antenna size; (ii) accumulation of protective carotenoids; and (iii) very rapid repair of photodamaged reaction center proteins. This work elucidated the molecular mechanisms of photoinhibition resistance in one of the most light-tolerant photosynthetic organisms, and shows how photoinhibition protection mechanisms evolved to marginal conditions, enabling photosynthesis-dependent life in severe habitats.4SC-202 mouse

Both techniques offer the option of including a wide variety of functional groups into the CH chain. Thus, enhanced and new properties can be obtained in accordance with the requirements for different applications, such as the release of drugs, the improvement of antimicrobial properties of fabrics, the removal of dyes, or as scaffolds to develop bone tissues.Mining is the most common activity that introduces heavy metal ions into aquatic ecosystems, especially in low income-developing nations where governments are implementing stricter regulations for industrial wastewater. In this context, this work is focused on the application of xanthate-modified alginates for the removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solutions. In order to confirm the presence of xanthate groups alongside alginate chains, characterization by second-derivative FT-IR was carried out and significance evidence attributed to xanthate groups was found at around 1062-1079 cm-1, 829-845 cm-1 and 620-602 cm-1. In addition to this, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were employed to explore thermal properties of modified alginates. According to these results, enthalpy changes (∆H) characteristic of dehydration and collapse of biopolymeric structure were estimated as +11.41 J/g and -6.83 J/g, respectively. Furthermore, the presence of S element was confirmed by EDS mapping technique, whereas FESEM image showed a cracked and homogeneous surface distribution. On the other hand, the effect of important parameters such as pH, dosage, initial concentration as well as Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm were deeply discussed. Finally, rheological measurements were performed aiming to investigate the gel-like viscoelastic features associated to nickel xanthate compound. The present work aims at assessing the main characteristics of lignocellulosic micro/nanofibers (LCMNF) from bleached thermomechanical pulp (BTMP) from spruce while glimpsing the suitability of cationic demand (CD) as effective monitoring parameter of the fibrillation process. For this, BTMP was mechanically refined at different times in a Valley beater, aiming at determining the required refining time and fiber length to be later fibrillated in a high-pressure homogenizer. It was found that 150 min treatment is required to avoid clogging in the pressure chambers of the homogenizer. The mechanically treated BTMP was gradually passed through a high-pressure homogenizer, leading to four LCMNF with different fibrillation degree. The main characteristics of the LCMNF were determined, as well as the effect that high-pressure homogenization may generate onto the LCMNF structure. It was observed that CD is a robust parameter to monitor the fibrillation process, as it is a good indicator of the LCMNF characteristics. Ac-PHSCN-NH2 In addition, it was found that WRV may not be a good indicator of the extent of fibrillation for LCMNF, as the lignin content varies with the homogenization intensity. Finally, the limitations of CD as monitoring parameter and perspectives on this regard are provided to the reader.Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) attracted significant scientific interest, considering their immense diversity of usage and biocompatibility. Perceiving the growing importance of sustainable chemistry, many efforts have been made to prepare these NPs using naturally occurring materials mostly plant extracts and microbes. Magnetic NPs (MNPs) are commonly used as composites and are considered in two matters synthesis and modification of their functional groups. Biopolymeric nanocomposites are a group of hybrid materials composed of natural polymers and inorganic nanomaterials. Biopolymers such as alginate, cellulose, starch, gelatin, chitosan, etc. have been considered extensively and provided composites with better electrical and mechanical thermal properties. Fe3O4 NPs incorporated in a polymer and biopolymer matrix is a good instance of the functional nanostructure, which has been able to enhance the properties of both ingredients. These hybrids can have impressive applications in various scopes such as magneto-optical storage, electromagnetic interference shielding, catalyst, water remediation, biomedical sensing, and so on. In this study, we have tried to briefly introduce Fe3O4 NPs, investigate the green and sustainable methods that have been suggested for its synthesis and review recent utilization of their biopolymeric nanocomposite (NC) including starch, chitosan, dextrin, etc. as catalysts and photocatalysts. In this study, exopolysaccharides (EPSs) produced by Weissella confusa XG-3 were characterized. The monosaccharide composition of XG-3 EPS was determined to include glucose according to GC data, and its molecular weight was 3.19 × 106 Da, as determined by HPLC. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a smooth, porous, and branched structure, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirmed the presence of round lumps and chains on irregular surfaces of XG-3 EPS. The results of the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses suggested that XG-3 EPS is a linear α-(1,6)-linked dextran. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data confirmed the noncrystalline amorphous structure, and the results of the Congo red assay corresponded to the random coiled chain conformation of XG-3 dextran. XG-3 dextran exhibited good radical scavenging activity and reducing power and possessed high thermal stability, with a degradation temperature (Td) of 306.8 °C. The absolute value of the zeta potential and particle size of XG-3 dextran continually increased with increasing dextran concentration. The water contact angle showed that XG-3 dextran had relatively high hydrophobicity in the presence of sucrose. XG-3 dextran stimulated the growth of Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. These findings indicate that XG-3 dextran has unique characteristics and can be potentially applied as a food additive and an antioxidant.Irisin is a muscle factor discovered in 2012 that plays an important role in many tissues, including bone.

The approach is expected to be useful for the analysis of various types of lipid-based systems, e.g. for the characterization of interactions between target drug molecules and potential carrier/delivery systems. Two of the microstructural parameters most influential in the properties of polycrystalline materials are grain size and crystallographic texture. Although both properties have been extensively studied and there are a wide range of analysis tools available, they are generally considered independently, without taking into account the possible correlations between them. However, there are reasons to assume that grain size and orientation are correlated microstructural state variables, as they are the result of single microstructural formation mechanisms occurring during material processing. In this work, the grain size distribution and orientation distribution functions are combined in a single multivariate grain size orientation distribution function (GSODF). In addition to the derivation of the function, several examples of practical applications to low carbon steels are presented, in which it is shown how the GSODF can be used in the analysis of 2D and 3D electron backscatter diffraction data, as well as in the generation of representative volume elements for full-field models and as input in simulations using mean-field methods. An automatic sample changer system for measurements of large numbers of liquid samples - the µDrop Sample Changer - is presented. It is based on a robotic arm equipped with a pipetting mechanism, which is combined with a novel drop-based sample holder. In this holder a drop of liquid is suspended between two parallel plates by surface tension. The absence of a transfer line benefits the cleaning, improving the background as well as making it faster and more efficient than most comparable capillary-based systems. The µDrop Sample Changer reaches cycle times below 35 s and can process up to 480 samples in a single run. Sample handling is very reliable, with a drop misplacement chance of about 0.2%. Very low sample volumes ( less then 20 µl) are needed and repeatable measurements were performed down to 6 µl. Using measurements of bovine serum albumin and lysozyme, the performance of the instrument and quality of the gathered data of low and high concentrations of proteins are presented. The temperature of samples can also be controlled during storage and during measurement, which is demonstrated by observing a phase transition of a mesophase-forming lipid solution. The instrument has been developed for use in small-angle X-ray scattering experiments, which is a well established technique for measuring (macro-)molecules. It is commonly used in biological studies, where often large sets of rare samples have to be measured.Laboratory diffraction contrast tomography (LabDCT) is a recently developed technique for 3D nondestructive grain mapping using a conical polychromatic beam from a laboratory-based X-ray source. The effects of experimental parameters, including accelerating voltage, exposure time and number of projections used for reconstruction, on the characterization of the 3D grain structure in an iron sample are quantified. find more The experiments were conducted using a commercial X-ray tomography system, ZEISS Xradia 520 Versa, equipped with a LabDCT module; and the data analysis was performed using the software package GrainMapper3D, which produces a 3D reconstruction from binarized 2D diffraction patterns. It is found that the exposure time directly affects the background noise level and thus the ability to distinguish weak spots of small grains from the background. With the assistance of forward simulations, it is found that spots from the first three strongest hkl families of a large grain can be seen with as few as 30-40 projections, which is sufficient for indexing the crystallographic orientation and resolving the grain shape with a reasonably high accuracy. It is also shown that the electron current is a more important factor than the accelerating voltage to be considered for optimizing the photon numbers with energies in the range of 20-60 keV. This energy range is the most important one for diffraction of common metals, e.g. iron and aluminium. Several suggestions for optimizing LabDCT experiments and 3D volume reconstruction are finally provided. This article reports on energy-dispersive micro Laue (µLaue) diffraction of an individual gold nanowire that was mechanically deformed in three-point bending geometry using an atomic force microscope. The nanowire deformation was investigated by scanning the focused polychromatic X-ray beam along the nanowire and recording µLaue diffraction patterns using an energy-sensitive pnCCD detector that permits measurement of the angular positions of the Laue spots and the energies of the diffracted X-rays simultaneously. The plastic deformation of the nanowire was shown by a bending of up to 3.0 ± 0.1°, a torsion of up to 0.3 ± 0.1° and a maximum deformation depth of 80 ± 5 nm close to the position where the mechanical load was applied. In addition, extended Laue spots in the vicinity of one of the clamping points indicated the storage of geometrically necessary dislocations with a density of 7.5 × 1013 m-2. While µLaue diffraction with a non-energy-sensitive detector only gives access to the deviatoric strain, the energy sensitivity of the employed pnCCD offers absolute strain measurements with a resolution of 1%. Here, the residual strain after complete unloading of the nanowire amounted to maximum tensile and compressive strains of the order of +1.2 and -3%, which is comparable to the actual resolution limit. The combination of white-beam µLaue diffraction using an energy-sensitive pixel detector with nano-mechanical testing opens up new possibilities for the study of mechanical behavior at the nanoscale.Neutron spin-echo spectroscopy is a unique experimental method for the investigation of polymer dynamics. The combination of neutron spin-echo spectroscopy with grazing-incidence geometry (GINSES) opens the possibility to probe the dynamics of soft-matter materials in the vicinity of the solid substrate in the time range up to 100 ns. However, the usage of the GINSES technique has some peculiarities and, due to the novelty of the method and complexity of the scattering geometry, difficulties in further data analysis occur. The current work discusses how virtual experiments within the distorted-wave Born approximation using the BornAgain software can improve GINSES data treatment and aid the understanding of polymer dynamics in the vicinity of the solid surface. With two examples, poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) brushes and poly(ethylene glycol) microgels on Si surfaces, the simulation as well as the application of the simulation to the GINSES data analysis are presented. The approach allowed a deeper insight to be gained of the background effect and scattering contribution of different layers.find more
