`# Engineering an AI-Powered Tax Compliance Platform with Next.js, TypeScript & Workflow Automation

Most people think tax compliance is a finance problem.

It’s actually a distributed systems + workflow orchestration problem.

While building Tax Garden an AI-powered GST, ITR, and compliance platform for Indian businesses, we realized modern tax infrastructure behaves very similarly to large-scale event-driven systems.

 The Real Challenges

Indian compliance workflows involve:

asynchronous government portals

unreliable validation systems

delayed reconciliation data

constantly changing regulations

stateful filing dependencies

rule-heavy workflows

A single GST or ITR filing may depend on:

GSTN APIs

PAN validation

Aadhaar verification

AIS reconciliation

TDS datasets

invoice matching

banking verification

From an engineering perspective, this becomes:

workflow orchestration

retry handling

queue management

state synchronization

document processing

compliance rule engines

 Tech Stack We Use

Current stack powering Tax Garden:

 Frontend

Next.js

React 19

TypeScript

Tailwind CSS

Framer Motion

 Infrastructure

Vercel

Cloudflare

Amazon SES

Razorpay integrations

 Engineering Priorities

fast rendering

SEO-first architecture

scalable content generation

workflow automation

schema-driven UI

low-friction onboarding

Why Next.js Works Extremely Well for Compliance Platforms

Compliance products need:

SEO

fast content indexing

dynamic routing

server rendering

structured metadata

scalable publishing

Next.js gives:

hybrid rendering

route-based architecture

metadata APIs

edge optimization

excellent developer velocity

For content-heavy compliance platforms, SSR + SEO becomes a massive advantage.

 Biggest Engineering Bottleneck: Rule Changes

The hardest part isn’t frontend.

It’s adapting quickly when:

GST rules change

ITR schemas update

MCA deadlines shift

CBDT notifications arrive

filing validations evolve

This means compliance systems need:

modular rule engines

configuration-driven workflows

dynamic validation pipelines

Hardcoding compliance logic becomes unmaintainable very quickly.

AI + Compliance = Interesting Combination

We’re experimenting heavily with:

AI-assisted reconciliation

automated compliance explanations

filing guidance systems

smart classification workflows

notice interpretation

contextual tax recommendations

The challenge is balancing:

automation

explainability

legal accuracy

user trust

Compliance products cannot hallucinate.

 One Surprising Discovery

SEO infrastructure matters almost as much as product engineering.

Because:

tax searches are intent-heavy

users search problem-first

educational content drives acquisition

topical authority compounds over time

That’s why Tax Garden invests heavily in:

structured content

schema markup

internal linking

compliance knowledge architecture

 Final Thought

Building modern compliance infrastructure in India feels like combining:

SaaS engineering

workflow systems

AI tooling

legal frameworks

search infrastructure

It’s one of the most underrated engineering domains right now.

Website:

Building a Smarter ITR Filing Workflow for AY 2026-27 in India 🇮🇳

India’s income tax ecosystem is becoming increasingly data-driven.

Between AIS reconciliation, Form 26AS matching, crypto/VDA disclosures, new tax regime defaults, and updated ITR schemas, filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is no longer just a “submit a form” task — it’s a compliance engineering problem.

While working on compliance workflows at Tax Garden, we noticed that most filing issues happen because of:

Incorrect ITR form mapping

AIS vs Form 26AS mismatches

Invalid deduction claims

Unvalidated bank accounts

Improper reporting of freelance/business income

Last-minute filing load on the portal

 What Changed in AY 2026-27?

Some major operational changes impacting taxpayers and tax platforms:

 1. Increased Data Cross-Verification

The Income Tax Department now cross-checks:

AIS

TIS

Form 26AS

Bank interest

Securities transactions

Crypto exchanges

GST turnover

TDS filings

This means reconciliation logic is becoming more important than ever.

 2. New Tax Regime Becomes Default

Most salaried taxpayers now need active tax planning instead of passive filing.

Engineering-wise, this creates:

rule-based deduction calculations

dynamic tax optimization

conditional form rendering

 3. More Structured Validation

Modern ITR filing behaves almost like API validation pipelines:

schema checks

PAN/Aadhaar validation

account verification

deduction consistency checks

duplicate entry prevention

Compliance Is Slowly Becoming a FinTech Infrastructure Problem

Traditional manual filing workflows don’t scale well for:

startups

SMEs

freelancers

creator economy professionals

SaaS businesses

The future clearly points toward:

automation-first compliance

AI-assisted filing

reconciliation engines

real-time notice detection

workflow orchestration

That’s one reason platforms like Tax Garden are building automation-focused compliance systems using:

Next.js

React

TypeScript

workflow-driven architectures

compliance intelligence layers

Practical Filing Checklist Before You Submit ITR

Before filing:

Verify AIS & Form 26AS

Reconcile TDS entries

Validate bank accounts

Check old vs new regime impact

Review capital gains

Review crypto/VDA disclosures

Match GST turnover (if applicable)

Small mismatches can trigger:

refund delays

defective return notices

compliance scrutiny

 Full Detailed Guide

We published a detailed practical breakdown here:

https://taxgarden.in/blog/itr-filing-guide-ay-2026-27-new-forms-deadlines

It covers:

ITR forms

deadlines

reconciliation

tax regime comparison

common mistakes

filing workflows

Would love to hear how others are approaching tax automation and compliance engineering in India.

How AI Is Reshaping Tax Compliance for Indian Startups

If you run a startup or small business in India, your tax compliance workload just got a lot more interesting. The government, your CA, and your compliance software are all deploying AI simultaneously, and the gap between who benefits and who gets caught out is widening fast.

What the Income Tax Department Already Knows
CBDT cross-references your ITR with data from banks, mutual funds, property registrars, and the Annual Information Statement (AIS). If your lifestyle indicators do not match your reported income, the AI flags the return before a human ever reviews it. This is not a future feature. It ran in the 2025-26 filing season and will be sharper in AY 2026-27.

For founders: if you paid rent, bought mutual funds, or received dividends this year, all of it is already in the government's data. Your ITR needs to match.

AI at the Filing Layer
The big compliance platforms now use AI for two jobs: GSTR-2B reconciliation (matching your purchase invoices against what your vendors reported) and ITC eligibility filtering (flagging credits you cannot legally claim). Both tasks were previously manual and error-prone.

For a startup doing 100+ transactions a month, manual GSTR-2B reconciliation takes 3-4 hours. AI reduces it to 15 minutes, with mismatches highlighted for human review.

What AI Still Cannot Do
Government AI chatbots like Karsati answer procedural questions (which ITR form to use, how to e-verify) but cannot compute your optimal tax regime, handle capital gains from ESOPs, or respond to a notice with nuanced arguments. That still requires a professional.

The practical split for Indian startups: use AI for data entry, reconciliation, and deadline tracking. Keep a human CA in the loop for interpretive decisions, notice replies, and anything involving the new Income Tax Act 2025 transition.

The Bottom Line
AI in Indian tax compliance is not a replacement for expertise. It is a multiplier. The teams using it well are the ones pairing AI-powered automation with qualified CA oversight.

Full breakdown with platform comparisons and what to look for when evaluating a compliance partner is on Tax Garden: https://taxgarden.in/blog/ai-in-tax-compliance-india-2026

New Income Tax E-Filing Portal 2026: Karsati AI, Form Wizard, and What Changed

India redesigned its income tax e-filing portal on April 1, 2026. If you last used the old portal (eportal.incometax.gov.in circa 2021-2025), the experience has changed in a few meaningful ways not just the visual refresh, but the actual interaction model.

Here is a developer-and-technically-minded breakdown of what is new.

Karsati: The Portal is Built-In AI Assistant

Karsati is a multilingual AI assistant embedded directly in the e-filing portal interface. It is available in English and Hindi and responds in real time as you navigate filing workflows.

What it does technically:

Contextual guidance: Karsati knows which page you are on. If you are in the ITR-4 income section, it gives ITR-4-specific help, not generic FAQs.
Form selection: Ask Karsati what ITR form you should use, describe your income type (salary + freelance, or business + capital gains), and it recommends the right form.
Field explanations: Click a specific field and ask Karsati what it means. Especially useful for Schedule OS (Other Sources), Schedule CG (Capital Gains), or the newly renumbered sections under the Income Tax Act 2025.
Deadline lookups: You can ask about specific filing deadlines without navigating away from the form.
Karsati does not auto-fill or make entries on your behalf. It is strictly a guidance layer. Think of it as a contextual help sidebar that actually understands the form.

 Form Wizard: Guided ITR Selection

Before Karsati, choosing the right ITR form was a lookup exercise: find the instructions PDF, match your income type to the criteria, then start filing. The new portal adds a Form Wizard that walks you through it interactively.

The Wizard asks:

Are you an individual, HUF, firm, company, or trust?
What types of income did you earn this year?
Do you have business income? If yes, are you opting for presumptive taxation?
Do you have capital gains?
At the end, it recommends the correct form and opens it directly. For ITR-1 (salaried) to ITR-4 (presumptive business) transitions, this reduces errors significantly.

Integrated Payment: No More Challan 280 as a Separate Step

Previously, paying self-assessment tax or advance tax required generating a Challan 280 separately on the NSDL/Protean portal, noting the BSR code and challan serial, and entering those in the ITR. The new portal integrates payment directly in the filing workflow.

You can pay via:

Net banking (all major Indian banks)
UPI (BHIM, GPay, PhonePe)
NEFT / RTGS (generates a virtual account number)
Debit card
The challan details auto-populate after payment. This removes a significant source of errors for first-time filers who used to enter the BSR code incorrectly.

What Changed With the Income Tax Act 2025 Renumbering

This is where things get tricky for developers building tax-related tools:

The Income Tax Act 2025 (effective April 1, 2026) replaced the Income Tax Act 1961 with entirely renumbered sections. If you have code that references section numbers in documentation, validation messages, or business logic:

Old 80C (deductions for life insurance, PPF, ELSS) is now in a different section
Old 44AB (tax audit threshold) is now Section 63
Old 44AD (presumptive taxation for businesses) is now Section 58
Old 139 (ITR filing) is now Section 263
CBDT published a conversion table in March 2026. CBDT also issued a corrigendum addressing 76 errors in the first published draft of the new rules. If you are building compliance software, validate against the corrigendum, not just the original Act text.

 Pre-Filled Data: What Gets Auto-Loaded

The portal now auto-fills more data than before via three sources:

Form 26AS: TDS deducted by employers, banks, tenants, and others
AIS (Annual Information Statement): Interest, dividends, capital gains from brokers and mutual funds, rental income, foreign remittances
TIS (Taxpayer Information Summary): Simplified aggregate view of AIS data
For an individual filer, most of Schedule TDS, Schedule OS (savings interest), and equity capital gains can now be pre-filled from AIS. You review and confirm rather than enter from scratch.

For business filers (ITR-3, ITR-6), the business income schedules still require manual input or import from accounting software.

The One Friction Point: Section Numbering in Notices

The biggest UX friction in 2026 is that GST notices still reference old section numbers (CGST Act 2017 was not replaced), while income tax notices now reference new Act 2025 sections. If you are building a notice-management tool, you now need to handle two different reference systems for the same taxpayer.
