Finding the right AI agent tools shouldn't be this hard. But in 2026, it is. GitHub search buries you in unranked results, best-of listicles rot within weeks, and most awesome-lists are abandoned by their maintainers. I got tired of hitting that wall, so I mapped the entire ecosystem: 3,300+ open-source AI agent tools across 32 categories, ranked by the community, and kept fresh by a bot that never sleeps.

I know this pain all too well. While I was deep in the trenches building AI agents, I kept bumping into the same wall. So, I decided to go all-in and map the open source AI agent tools universe, over 3,300 repositories in 32 categories, and create a self-updating system to keep it fresh and relevant.

Watch the full tour: a 40-second walkthrough of the whole site:

Why Tool Discovery for AI Agents Sucks

Here's the kicker: we're drowning in AI agent tools, but discovering them is a nightmare. Frameworks, coding agents, MCP servers, memory systems, RAG pipelines, evaluation harnesses, you name it, they're scattered across GitHub with zero ranking, freshness, or centralized place for comparison. Tool discovery for ai agents has become a real challenge.

The current directories are so flawed it hurts:

Static lists: accurate for about five minutes, then they start to decay.

Paid directories: SEO farms disguised as curated lists, complete with sneaky affiliate links.

GitHub search: sure, it's powerful, but it can't tell you which tools are alive, kicking, and actually used by humans. Searching ai agent tools github rarely gives you what you actually need.

What I Cooked Up: A Self-Updating AI Tools List

Meet Awesome AI Agent Stack. It's an open source AI agent tools directory boasting over 3,300 repositories in 32 categories. Each tool is ranked by GitHub stars, so you can see what the community genuinely uses. If you're looking for an AI tools list that doesn't go stale, this is it.

Here's the magic sauce: it maintains itself.

Every 5 hours, a bot hunts down trending sources for fresh AI agent tools.

It checks potential candidates against a strict quality bar: at least 1,000 stars, active maintenance, and true-to-purpose.

Dead links and archived repos? The bot kicks them to the curb automatically.

It's all free and open source: https://github.com/tayyabimam1/awesome-ai-agent-stack

The Top 5 AI Agent Tool Categories Right Now

Agent frameworks: your go-to orchestration layer that everything else plugs into.

Coding agents: the autonomous dev tools that are skyrocketing in popularity.

MCP servers: setting the standard for equipping agents with tools.

Memory systems: the key difference between a one-off demo and a genuinely useful agent.

Evaluation harnesses: because measuring agent quality seriously is non-negotiable.

 FAQ

What is Awesome AI Agent Stack? It's an open source AI agent tools directory: 3,300+ repositories across 32 categories, ranked by GitHub stars. If you're looking for an AI tools list that stays current, this is it.

How are the AI agent tools ranked? By GitHub stars, so the tools the community actually uses rise to the top. The most-starred repos in each category are the safest starting point, and the top 5 AI agent tools in any category are usually the ones worth your time.

How often is the list updated? Every 5 hours. A bot rescans trending sources for new AI agent tools, checks them against the quality bar, and files them for review. Dead links and archived repos get pruned on the same cycle.

What does it take for a repo to get listed? At least 1,000 stars, actively maintained, and genuinely agent-related. Searching ai agent tools github yourself rarely surfaces this signal, which is why the bar exists.

Is it free? Can I contribute? Completely free, forever. It's open source, so you can open a PR or suggest missing open source AI agents any time. Tool discovery for ai agents works best as a community effort.

 Star It on GitHub

If you're in the AI agent-building game, give the repo a star and swing by often. It's got fresh updates every 5 hours, so your ai agent tools github search just got way easier.
