Signal vs. Noise: Why I Built a Tech Trend Tracker That Ignores Hype

Engineering leaders burn a lot of time on signal acquisition. Newsletters, Hacker News, LinkedIn, Slack, RSS feeds. The volume is relentless and the signal-to-noise ratio is brutal.

The standard move is to subscribe to everything and skim. You end up with 40 browser tabs and a vague sense that something is happening with [insert buzzword here], but no real confidence in where things are actually moving.

I got tired of it.

 The idea behind TechDrift

TechDrift tracks technology topics across dozens of sources and ranks them by persistence, not volume. A topic that shows up in a single viral post doesn't move the needle. A topic that keeps appearing across different sources, different contexts, week after week? That's a signal worth paying attention to.

The core mechanism is cross-source persistence: does a topic maintain presence over time, or does it spike and disappear? Spike-and-disappear is noise. Consistent cross-source appearance is signal.

What that looks like in practice

Right now, signals that have been holding steady include things like:

AI-assisted code review tooling (not "AI coding" broadly; the specific tooling integration layer)

WASM adoption in backend and edge contexts

Observability platform consolidation

These aren't predictions. They're observations about what's sustaining presence across technical publications, practitioner blogs, and developer communities, after filtering out the one-day spikes.

 Who it's for

Engineers and engineering leaders who need to stay current without spending 3 hours a day on it. If you're deciding which infrastructure bets to make, which platforms to learn, or just trying to separate real traction from vendor marketing noise, that's the use case.

 Where it is now

TechDrift is live at techdrift.app. Free tier, no credit card. Signal board updates continuously.

Building this in public. Would genuinely welcome feedback from anyone who cares about the problem. What do you currently do to stay current? Where does your approach break down?
