Laptop Battery Draining Too Fast? Here's How to Make It Last

If your laptop used to last six hours and now dies after three, the battery probably isn't the whole story. Software settings, background apps, and heat all eat runtime. Here's how to claw it back, starting with the biggest wins.

 Check What's Draining It First

Windows has a built-in battery report most people never open. Run
powercfg /batteryreport
in an admin terminal and open the HTML file it generates — it shows capacity history and per-day drain. If full-charge capacity has dropped 30%+ from design capacity, the battery itself is aging and no setting will fully fix it.

 Kill the Background Hogs

Open Task Manager → Startup apps and disable the updaters, chat clients, and game launchers you don't need at boot. Then check Settings → System → Power & battery → Battery usage per app: anything burning double-digit percentages in the background gets restricted or uninstalled.

Lower the Screen — The Biggest Single Win

The display is the hungriest component by far. Dropping brightness from 100% to 60–70% can add an hour of runtime alone. Set a shorter screen timeout (2–3 minutes) and let the display sleep aggressively.

 Switch to Efficiency Mode

Windows 11's Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode → "Best power efficiency" genuinely extends runtime by capping boost clocks. For browsing and office work you won't feel the difference; for gaming, switch back.

 Stop the Heat

A hot laptop burns more power — fans spin up, the CPU boosts harder to compensate. Keeping the machine cool with keeping the machine cool with sensible fan control pays off in battery life as well as noise.

 Update Drivers and BIOS

Chipset and power-management driver updates often include real efficiency fixes. Check your laptop maker's support page quarterly — especially after major Windows updates.

 Calibrate Occasionally

Once every few months, run the battery from 100% to ~10% in one sitting, then charge fully. This doesn't restore capacity, but it recalibrates the fuel gauge so the percentage reads honestly.

 When to Replace

If the battery report shows under 70% of design capacity and you've done everything above, replacement is the answer. On most laptops it's a 15-minute job with a $40–80 part — check iFixit for your model.
