Our team delivers more than 150 iSAQB-related trainings each year, across different formats and levels. The iSAQB Roadmap

The International Software Architecture Qualification Board (iSAQB) defines an international learning path for software architects.

It starts with the CPSA-F – Foundation Level, continues with the CPSA-A – Advanced Level, and ends with the CPSA-E – Expert Level (will soon be available as a further and highest certification level).

What topics are in the CPSA-F exam?

According to iSAQB, the CPSA-F gives you the knowledge to:

The questions in the exam reflect these areas. They focus on conceptual understanding, not memorization. You’ll see realistic case situations, short design tasks, and questions about why certain decisions make sense in a given context.

What is the exam format / question types / scoring rules?

The CPSA-F exam is a multiple-choice test run by accredited certification bodies. You can take it online or in person after a three-to-four-day accredited training, or independently if you study on your own.

Language: English or German
Question types: single-choice, multiple-choice, and allocation (matching)
Number of questions: around 39 (as shown in the mock exam)
Passing threshold: ≥ 60 %

5 Preparation Tips for the iSAQB CPSA-F Exam

Here’s a simple plan that combines the official materials with what successful candidates recommend.

1. Learn the basics first

If you ask architects whether the iSAQB certification is worth it, you’ll probably hear different answers. I heard two types of answers:

“Yes, it helped me grow.” and “It depends on what you expect.”
The certification itself does not magically make you a better architect. It can give you a clearer way of thinking, a stronger voice in technical discussions, and a structure for learning that many of us need once we move beyond pure coding.

How do I know this?

I ran a podcast series with eight professionals from different fields (from companies like Bosch, Daimler Truck, and Finnova), asked how they approached iSAQB, and learned what changed for them. I collected their views and the details of the process, then brought everything together in one detailed article.

Their experiences show that the iSAQB certification’s value depends on where you are in your career and what you expect to gain.

When it’s worth it

I wanted one clear answer to a simple question: how do you think like a software architect? I read two books, The Software Architect Elevator and Fundamentals of Software Architecture. Then I sat with our trainer, Serkan Karagülle, asked a lot of questions, and reviewed my notes with him. From that work, we wrote a full article for Tecnovy.

This post is the short version for dev.to. First, a quick answer. Then where that answer shows up in those two books. After that, ten simple strategies you can use at work today.

So, how do you think like a software architect?

It’s not about memorizing patterns or frameworks. Thinking like an architect means seeing the whole picture. You link business goals to technical choices, weigh trade-offs, and keep systems ready for change. You aim less for a “perfect” solution and more for the right move in the current context. In short, an architect doesn’t only design software. They design direction.

Where does this answer come from?

Two books shaped this view more than anything else. Every architect I spoke with pointed to them.

The first is The Software Architect Elevator by Gregor Hohpe. He shows how strong architects move between two worlds, the “engine room” where teams build systems, and the “penthouse” where leaders set business goals.

The second is Fundamentals of Software Architecture by Mark Richards and Neal Ford. They explain the daily work, making trade-offs, balancing priorities, and communicating in plain language.

These books gave me the base for this mindset. They tie ideas to real projects and make clear that architecture is about learning and communication as much as code.

Top 10 strategies to think like a software architect

Here are ten practical ways to build the mindset we saw in our work and in those two books. Pick two, try them this week, then add more.

1- See both business and technology
Switch views during the day. Start with the problem the business wants to solve. Then check your design and ask how it supports revenue, risk, cost, or speed.

2- Plan for change, not only stability
Design seams where change will happen. Use interfaces, events, or feature flags. Reduce the blast radius when a team ships a change.

3- Surface hidden assumptions
List assumptions on a whiteboard. Ask why, what if, and how often. Turn fragile guesses into testable statements.

4- Think in trade-offs
Create a simple decision matrix. Write the options, pros, cons, and risks. Pick the best fit for the context, not the most popular tool.

5- Tie choices to business drivers
Link every decision to a driver like time to market, compliance, or unit cost. If a choice does not serve a driver, drop it.

6- Communicate in simple language
Explain designs with one picture and three bullets. Run short design reviews. Make sure both engineers and managers can repeat the idea back.

7- Balance breadth and depth
Stay hands-on with one or two areas. Keep broad awareness of the rest. Use spikes and small prototypes to compare tools on real sample data.

8- Document decisions on one page
Use ADRs. Capture the decision, the options you dropped, the reasons, and the date. Share them in the repo where work happens.

9- Avoid extremes in your role
Be present in code reviews and standups. Set direction, remove blockers, and give teams space to own the details.

10- Keep learning and build your network
Architecture grows with your skills and your circle. Keep a simple learning plan, review once a month (or once a quarter, it is up to you), and share notes with peers.

I started by creating a LinkedIn profile that showcases my skills, experiences, and goals. First, find my friends then continue with connecting with my professors and people I worked with. I joined industry groups related to my field of interest. For this part, don’t be shy to engage in discussions or share your insights.

You can send connection requests to people you admire or want to learn from by personalizing your invitations with a brief note explaining why you’d like to connect. It’s a friendly and professional way to grow your network.

Reddit and Dev.to are for everyone who enjoys learning and sharing knowledge, not just computer geeks. They provide a forum for discussing trends, posing questions, and interacting with like-minded individuals.

You can join forums on Dev.to, for instance, that discuss design, web development, or even career guidance. On the other side, Reddit offers a plethora of subreddits (forums) where you can participate in conversations about almost any subject.

These resources are priceless, whether you're looking for help with a code issue or want to learn more about a certain sector.

3- Online Webinars

Webinars are another fantastic way to expand your network and gain valuable insights. Even while researching the topic you're interested in on Google, you can find many online free or paid options.
