If you’re a UI/UX designer, you probably already know how to make money from client work.

But what if you could also make money from the things you create without starting from zero for every new client?

That’s where digital products and other scalable income streams come in.

“Passive income” doesn’t mean completely hands-off income. Most products still require marketing, updates, customer support, and maintenance.

The difference is that you’re creating something that can potentially be sold or used by multiple people instead of exchanging your time for every payment.

Here are 10 practical ways to start.

Website Templates

Website templates can be useful for startups, agencies, freelancers, portfolios, SaaS businesses, and personal brands.

Instead of designing a completely new website for every customer, you create a reusable foundation that buyers can customize.

A good template should be more than visually attractive. Make sure it’s responsive, organized, easy to customize, and solves a specific problem.

UI Kits

UI kits package reusable components such as buttons, forms, cards, navigation elements, dashboards, and other interface patterns.

If you’ve already built a collection of useful components, you may be able to turn them into a product that saves other designers time.

Organization matters. Clear naming, consistent components, and simple documentation can make a good UI kit much more valuable.

Figma Resources

Figma resources are another practical option.

You could create:

Wireframe kits

Landing-page sections

Mobile UI resources

Dashboard components

Component libraries

Design templates

The best resource isn’t necessarily the biggest one. Start by solving one specific problem well.

Design Systems

Design systems can be valuable products for teams that want consistency without building everything from scratch.

A focused design system could include typography, colours, spacing, components, buttons, forms, and documentation.

You don’t need to create an enterprise-level system on your first attempt. Start with a specific audience or use case.

Icons and Illustrations

Icons and illustrations can be packaged into reusable collections.

You could create resources for particular industries or use cases such as:

Finance

Healthcare

Education

SaaS

E-commerce

Consistency is key. Your collection should feel like one product rather than a group of unrelated assets.

Animations and Motion Assets

If you work with motion design, consider creating reusable animations.

Examples include:

UI transitions

Loading animations

Animated icons

Micro-interactions

Website effects

Make the files easy to understand and clearly state which software or formats are supported.

Other Digital Products

Your design skills can also become products that aren’t traditional design assets.

Think about:

UX research templates

Design checklists

Client onboarding templates

Presentation templates

Portfolio templates

Design briefs

Look at the repetitive problems designers or businesses face, then create something that makes one of those problems easier.

Courses and Tutorials

Teaching can become another scalable income stream.

You don’t have to start with a huge course.

A focused tutorial can be enough to test whether people are interested in what you know.

For example:

“How to Build a Reusable Figma Component Library” is more specific and actionable than simply offering a course called “Learn UI Design.”

Start with one problem. Teach the solution clearly.

Content and Affiliate Income

Your knowledge can also become content.

You could create tutorials, design breakdowns, case studies, resource lists, or product reviews.

Over time, useful content can attract people who may eventually purchase your products or use relevant services you recommend.

The priority should always be usefulness first, monetization second.

Build a Product Ecosystem

One product doesn’t have to exist on its own.

For example, you could create:

UI kit → website template → icon pack → tutorial

Each product can support the others.

This can be more effective than constantly creating unrelated products because you’re building around a specific audience and set of problems.

⸻

Which Option Should You Start With?

You don’t need to try all ten.

Here’s a simple way to think about them:

Income stream Effort Scalability
Website templates Medium–High High
UI kits Medium High
Figma resources Medium High
Design systems High High
Icons Medium High
Illustrations Medium High
Motion assets Medium–High High
Digital products Medium High
Courses High High
Content Medium–High High

If you’re a beginner, start with one small product.

For example, instead of spending months building a huge design system, create a focused Figma resource that solves one clear problem.

Then get it in front of people and learn from the feedback.

Where ThemesMotion Fits In

Creating a good product is only one part of the process.

People also need to discover it.

ThemesMotion is a discovery platform where designers, developers, freelancers, agencies, templates, digital products, and premium design resources can be found.

For designers creating digital products, a platform like ThemesMotion can be another place to showcase your work and make it easier for potential users or clients to discover what you create.

Of course, a profile alone won’t sell a product. You still need a useful product, good presentation, and consistent promotion.

A Simple 90-Day Roadmap

Days 1–30: Build

Choose one product idea.

Research similar products, identify gaps, and build your first version.

Don’t aim for perfection. Aim for something useful.

Days 31–60: Launch

Put the product in front of potential users.

Create content around the problem it solves.

Ask for feedback and pay attention to the questions people ask.

Days 61–90: Improve

Use the feedback to improve the product.

Update the files, improve the presentation, and make the buying or downloading experience clearer.

Then decide whether to create a related product or improve the existing one.

Don’t Confuse Passive Income With No Work

This is probably the most important thing to understand.

A digital product can be scalable, but it isn’t necessarily effortless.

You may still need to:

Update your files

Answer customer questions

Fix problems

Improve documentation

Market the product

Respond to feedback

The advantage is leverage.

Instead of being paid once for one piece of work, you’re creating something that can potentially help many people.

Start With One Thing

You don’t need ten products.

You don’t need a huge audience.

You don’t even need to know exactly what will work.

Start with one useful idea.

Build it.

Share it.

Learn from the response.

Then improve.

If you could turn one of your current design skills into a digital product, what would you create first?
