Prototype Development (3 months) January - March

 Minimum Viable Product (MVP) Design:

Design a basic prototype of the solution that demonstrates its core functionalities.
Technical Development: Utilize coding skills, hardware prototyping tools, and design software to build the MVP.
Testing & Iteration: Conduct user testing to gather feedback and iterate on the prototype to improve its usability and effectiveness.

 Prototyping:

A prototype is an early model of something be it either hardware or software. There are two main types of prototypes; cardboard prototypes and paper prototypes.
Cardboard prototypes: Are you producing a physical three dimensional invention, building a prototype to begin will be ideal. You can begin by drawing your invention on paper and then using your sketches you can turn it into a physical model using cardboard

 Paper prototypes:

Suitable for software projects especially mobile apps and webapps. When producing a paper prototype, it is important to take into consideration the user interface, that is include items such as buttons, sliders that enable the users to move from one page of your app or website to another. For mobile apps, the paper prototype must contain all the pages found in the app.
Students with AI inventions can produce paper or cardboard prototypes depending on the type of invention. AI inventions could either be of hardware type or software type.

 Minimum Viable Product (MVP):

Before producing your prototype, it will be ideal producing an MVP for a start.
A minimum Viable product is an app, website, AI project or hardware device that has just enough features to satisfy your customers while collecting feedback so that improvements could be done later. It prioritizes only those things that solve the actual problems in the project. For example, to solve the problem of transportation, you could begin by producing a skateboard which solves the problem and then improving your invention by producing a scooter, a bike and later a car. The skateboard in this case is actually your MVP since it is the first product you produced and it has enough features to solve the problem of transportation.
Below is an in depth video to increase your understanding of MVP
(Understanding MVP)

 Prototyping mobile apps

A mobile app, is a software application designed to run on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet. Mobile apps could be built using the MIT app inventor platform or the Thunkable bee platform. If you are thinking about developing a mobile app, there are a few things you should keep in mind:
● Your target audience: Who are you building the app for? What are their needs and wants?
● The app's purpose: What will the app do? What features will it have?
● The app's design: How will the app look and feel? What kind of user experience do you want to create?
● The app's development: How will you develop the app? What programming languages and tools will you use?
● The app's marketing and promotion: How will you get people to download and use your app?
Below are in depthindepth video to enhance your understanding as you navigate through the MIT app inventor or Thunkable bee platform.
How to create mobile apps using MIT app inventor
How to create mobile apps using the Thunkable bee platform
Prototyping Web apps
A web application is a computer program that utilizes web browsers ( a web browser is a type of software that allows you to find and view websites on the Internet.) and web technology to perform tasks over the Internet.
There are several platforms on which web apps could be built. We have

Netlify:Netlify is a cloud platform that allows you to deploy static websites and web apps. This is a great platform for students who want to build web apps that are simple and easy to deploy.

Heroku:Heroku is a cloud platform that allows you to deploy web apps. This is a great platform for students who want to build web apps that are easy to deploy and scale.

Firebase:Firebase is a mobile platform that provides a variety of services for developing and deploying web apps. This is a great platform for students who want to build scalable and reliable web apps.

Figma:Figma is a web-based interface design tool that consists of powerful and exciting features for web design. This tool provides a collaborative and cost-effective platform for creating fascinating web designs.
Figma is one of the most preferred platforms for secondary school students to create web apps prototypes. Below is a video that can help you as you create your web app in the figma platform.
How to build websites using figma

 Prototyping AI inventions.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that deals with the creation of intelligent agents, which are systems that can reason, learn, and act autonomously. AI research has been highly successful in developing effective techniques for solving a wide range of problems, from game playing to medical diagnosis.
Teachable machine is the most suitable platform to use when developing an AI invention. It is a web-based platform that allows you to create AI models without any coding. This makes it a great platform for children who are new to programming. Teachable Machine can be used to create a variety of AI projects, such as image recognition systems and chatbots. Below is a video that will guide you as you use theusethe Teachable Machine to create your AI.
How to create AI inventions using Teachable machine

As you produce a prototype, it is ideal you test it's functionality with a few users, then collect feedback and improve upon the invention.

_

Idea Generation & Validation (2 months) January - February

_

B

rainstorming Sessions: Teams brainstorm innovative tech solutions to address real-world problems.

Problem Validation: Conduct user research and market analysis to validate the chosen idea and ensure its feasibility.

Idea Pitching: Teams pitch their ideas to a panel of experts for feedback and refinement.

To easily identify problems in your community, one of the crucial steps is understanding your community as well as the people living in that community.

 What is a Community?

A community is a group of people who live in the same place and share common interests or goals. Communities can be big or small, rural or urban, and they can be based on anything from geography to religion to hobbies.
A community for students can be their school, their neighborhood, or even their online social group. The important thing is that the community feels like a place where you belong and where you can connect with others who share their interests.

But how can you know your community better?

Below are some key strategies you could use to improve your knowledge on your community.

Volunteer in the community. This is a great way to get involved and to see firsthand the problems that people are facing.

Attend community meetings. This is a great way to learn about the issues that are important to people in the community. You can also meet with community leaders and learn about their plans for addressing these issues.

Talk to people in the community. Ask them about their experiences and what they think are the biggest challenges facing the community.

Carry out surveys to find out what people face as daily challenges

Volunteering in your community, carrying out surveys talking to people are not the only way of identifying problems in your community.

Problems could as well be identified by several other ways such as brainstorming or why not, identifying the problems you face personally.

Brainstorming is a group problem-solving method that involves the spontaneous contribution of creative ideas and solutions by a group of people. It is a great way to generate a lot of ideas in a short amount of time, and it can be used to solve any kind of problem.

 Brainstorming tips:

Set a clear goal. What are you trying to achieve with your brainstorming session? Once you know the goal, you can start to generate ideas that are relevant to it.

Have a diverse group of people. The more diverse your group, the more likely you are to come up with creative ideas. Make sure to include people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives.

Encourage wild ideas. Don't be afraid to think outside the box. The best ideas often come from the most unexpected places.

Build on each other's ideas. Once someone has shared an idea, see if anyone else can build on it or improve it. This can help you to come up with even more creative (Below is a short video that can provide you with excellent brainstorming tips)

Tips for better brainstorming

 Project Validation tips.

Need and Impact: Assess the extent of the problem and the potential impact your solution could have on addressing it. Consider the relevance and urgency of the problem in your community and how your solution can effectively meet the needs of the affected individuals or groups.

Research and Data: Conduct thorough research to gather data and information related to the problem. This research will help you understand the root causes, identify any existing solutions or initiatives, and provide evidence to support the effectiveness of your proposed solution.

Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with key stakeholders who are directly or indirectly affected by the problem. This can include community members, local organizations, experts, and authorities. Seek their input, perspectives, and feedback on your proposed solution to ensure it aligns with the actual needs of the community.

Feasibility: Evaluate the feasibility of your solution in terms of resources, time, and skills required for implementation. Consider the availability of necessary technology, funding, human resources, and any potential regulatory or logistical challenges.

Sustainability: Assess the long-term sustainability of your project. Consider its potential for scalability, its ability to create lasting positive change, and the availability of ongoing support and maintenance. Additionally, explore potential partnerships or collaborations that can contribute to the sustainability of your project.

Pilot Testing: Before implementing your solution on a larger scale, conduct a small-scale pilot test. This will allow you to evaluate its effectiveness, identify any necessary adjustments or improvements, and gather feedback from users or beneficiaries. You can enable people such as family members, friends to use your product, and provide feedback for improvement.

Design Thinking, an approach to Problem Solving

Design thinking is human centered approach in solving problems. It involved finding out what people and producing it to solve their various problems.

It has five main stages: Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test.

 Empathy:

It involves putting yourself in the user’s shoes to identify their problems. In the empathizing stage, research is important. We have;

 Ethnographic Research:

It involves immersing yourself in a community and interacting with the individuals of the community to easily identify their problems. Researchers must go into the field and live there for some time to experience the problems caused by individuals in that community.

 Lean Research:

Does not necessitate the researcher to be present at the field, but rather puts the information provided by various researchers at the center of their design
Define: This stage involves defining the problem you are solving and trying to understand it. A problem statement is produced at this level.

 Ideate:

It involves coming out with a list of ideas to produce a solution. Ideation could be done in two major ways,

 - Using the Disney 3 room approach: Has three rooms, the dreamers room for answering the question “What”, the realistic room answering the question “How” and the critic room that answers the question “Why”

 Using the worst idea approach:

involves team members listing a variety of ideas(gross, illegal or terrible ideas)
Prototype and Testing: Involves producing a prototype of your idea and testing your solution with the aim of collecting feedback from users to improve upon your invention.
It is possible to either build a Low fidelity Prototype that has just a few features of your final product or a high fidelity prototype that has almost all the features of your product.
No entrepreneur will desire to take the risk of producing a finished product that doesn’t satisfy the consumer’s taste. Prototyping and testing are therefore key steps that should not be missing in the production process.
For better understanding of design thinking, below is a video with detail explanation on what design thinking is all about. (Design thinking )

 Pitching your idea for validation.

Below are some key things to include in your pitch deck when trying to validate your idea.

Problem Statement: Clearly define the problem you have identified in your community. Describe the challenges, needs, or pain points that your solution aims to address. Use statistics, data, or real-life examples to highlight the significance and urgency of the problem.
A good problem statement must be SMART, i.e

S= Specific: Your problem statement should bring out the specific problem your team is solving. Be specific to a group of people, and if possible a particular age group.

M= Measurable: Make sure what you do can be quantified.

A= Attainable: Don’t set goals that are beyond your execution.

R= Realistic

T= Time bound: Your project should be executable within a given period of time.

Solution Overview: Provide a concise and compelling description of your innovative solution. Explain how it addresses the identified problem and outline its key features or functionalities. Clearly articulate the unique value proposition of your solution and how it sets itself apart from existing approaches.

Target Audience: Identify the specific audience or community that will benefit from your solution. Describe their characteristics, pain points, and how your solution directly caters to their needs. Demonstrate a clear understanding of your target audience's motivations and why they would adopt your solution.

Market Analysis: Present a market analysis that showcases the size, potential growth, and trends within the target market or community. Include information about any existing competitors or alternative solutions and explain how your solution differentiates itself and fills any existing gaps.

Business Model: Outline your business model and revenue generation strategy. Explain how you plan to monetize your solution and sustain its operations. Include details about pricing, partnerships, distribution channels, and any potential sources of funding or revenue streams.

Technical Implementation: Provide an overview of the technical aspects of your solution. Explain the underlying technology or platform, development stages, and any specialized requirements. Highlight any unique or proprietary technology that gives your solution a competitive advantage.

Impact and Benefits: Clearly articulate the potential impact and benefits of your solution. Describe the positive outcomes it can deliver to the community, such as improved efficiency, cost savings, social impact, or environmental sustainability. Back up your claims with relevant data or case studies, if available.

Team Formation (1 month) - January

## Club Creation Members form clubs based on shared interests and expertise.

Team Building Activities: Facilitated workshops and events to help members connect and build strong teams.

Mentor Pairing: Assign experienced mentors to each team to provide guidance and support throughout the project development process.

.
As you create a team with like minded individuals, leadership and team work are necessary aspects you need for the smooth collaboration among your team members.
Leadership:
A leader is someone who inspires and motivates others to achieve a common goal.
Leaders are often seen as having strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
Qualities of a good Leader.
Vision: A leader should have a clear vision for the future and be able to articulate that vision to others.
● Communication: A leader should be able to communicate effectively with both individuals and groups.
● Motivation: A leader should be able to motivate and inspire others to achieve their goals.
● Decision-making: A leader should be able to make sound decisions under pressure.
● Problem-solving: A leader should be able to identify and solve problems effectively.
● Teamwork: A leader should be able to work effectively with others to achieve common goals.

 Teamwork

Teamwork refers to the collaborative effort of a group of individuals working together towards a common goal. It involves effective communication, mutual support, coordination, and the pooling of skills and resources to achieve shared objectives.
Requirement for Good Teamwork.

Clear Goals and Roles: A well-functioning team should have clearly defined goals and objectives that are understood by all members. Each team member should have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities within the team to ensure accountability and a shared sense of purpose.

Communication: Effective communication is essential for good teamwork. Team members should actively listen to one another, express their thoughts and ideas clearly, and provide constructive feedback. Open and transparent communication helps to avoid misunderstandings and encourages collaboration.

Trust and Mutual Respect: Trust is the foundation of good teamwork. Team members should trust and rely on each other's abilities, knowledge, and commitment. Trust fosters an environment where ideas can be freely shared, conflicts can be resolved, and individuals feel safe to take risks and contribute their best efforts.

 4. Collaboration and Cooperation:

Team members should be willing to collaborate and work together towards a shared goal. This involves being open to different perspectives, valuing diverse skills and opinions, and actively seeking opportunities for synergy. Cooperation and a spirit of teamwork help to leverage the collective strengths of the team.

Effective Leadership: Good teamwork often requires effective leadership. A leader should provide guidance, support, and direction to the team. They should foster an inclusive and positive team culture, encourage participation, and facilitate decision-making processes. A strong leader can inspire and motivate team members to perform at their best.

Conflict Resolution: Conflict is natural in any team, but it should be managed constructively. Team members should be able to address conflicts openly, honestly, and respectfully. Effective conflict resolution involves active listening, empathetic understanding, and finding win-win solutions that benefit the team as a whole.

 Importance of teamwork and leadership

● Increased productivity: When people work together effectively, they can accomplish much more than they could individually.

● Improved decision-making: When people share their ideas and perspectives, they are more likely to make better decisions.

● Increased creativity: When people work together, they can come up with new and innovative ideas.

● Improved problem-solving: When people work together, they can pool their resources and knowledge to solve problems more effectively.

● Increased motivation: When people are part of a team, they are more likely to be motivated to achieve their goals.
## Strategies for selecting good team mates

Define Roles and Skills: Start by clearly defining the roles and skills needed for the project. Identify the specific expertise, knowledge, and abilities required to accomplish the project's objectives. This will help you determine the necessary qualifications for team members.

Assess Experience and Expertise: Evaluate the experience and expertise of potential team members. Look for individuals who have relevant knowledge, skills, and a track record of success in similar projects or domains. Consider their past achievements, educational background, certifications, and any specialized training they may have.

Compatibility and Collaboration: Consider the compatibility and collaborative skills of potential team members. Look for individuals who can work well with others, communicate effectively, and contribute positively to a team environment. Assess their ability to listen, give and receive feedback, and resolve conflicts constructively.

Diversity and Complementary Skills: Aim for a diverse team that brings different perspectives, experiences, and skill sets to the project. Look for individuals who can complement each other's strengths and weaknesses. This diversity can foster innovation, creativity, and a broader range of problem-solving approaches.

Team Player Attitude: Seek team members who have a cooperative mindset and are committed to the project's success. Look for individuals who are willing to collaborate, support others, and prioritize the collective goals over individual interests. Assess their level of motivation, dedication, and reliability.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills are vital for effective teamwork. Look for individuals who can express their ideas clearly, listen actively, and engage in constructive dialogue. Assess their ability to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and maintain a positive and respectful team atmosphere.

Problem-Solving and Adaptability: Projects often encounter challenges and changes along the way. Look for team members who demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and adaptability. Assess their ability to think critically, handle uncertainty, and come up with creative solutions. Look for individuals who embrace learning opportunities and are open to change.
