Repricing an x402 API from $0.10 to $0.01: the wallet caps set the price, not me

  Repricing an x402 API from $0.10 to $0.01: the wallet caps set the price, not me

Scout Packs is a B2B lead lookup API for AI agents. One call, paid in USDC on Base, no accounts, no API keys. It is live at https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app and it currently charges $0.10 per lookup.

Honest numbers first: at $0.10 we have zero paid lookups. Zero. Not "early traction." Zero. So we did the only teardown that matters, not our costs but the buyer's constraints, and repriced to $0.01. The new price is built, tested, and queued behind a deploy. Here is the math, including the part that hurts.

  The buyer has a cap, and I did not set it

An agent operator's wallet is not a human's wallet. Operator wallets commonly cap single calls at $0.005–$0.75, and $0.005 is the default cap a lot of agents run with. Do the division:

$0.10 / $0.005 cap = 20x the default cap. The wallet refuses before the agent even decides whether my data is worth it.

$0.01 / $0.005 cap = 2x. Still over, but within range of the caps operators actually raise for tools they use.

My pricing was not a technical decision. It was a demand-probe design choice sized against someone else's cap. Price against the cap, not the cost.

  Base settlement economics: the floor is not where you think

x402 on Base has a real price floor of $0.001. Below that the chain economics do not work. So $0.01 is fine technically. The harder gate lives one layer up: Agent402, the discovery router where agents find paid tools, applies roughly a 20-inbound-settlement trust bar before it will route to you at all. No price clears that bar. Only settled calls do.

That is the brutal loop: you need 20 paid calls to get routed, and you need to be routed to get paid calls. $0.01 does not break the loop. It just makes the first 20 settlements 10x easier to earn. Anyone who tells you pricing solved their discovery problem is selling something.

  The math that hurts: $0.05 cost, $0.01 price

Our per-lookup cost is about $0.05: verification labor, hosting, chain fees. At $0.10 we had margin and no buyers. At $0.01 we have inverted unit economics on purpose. That is not a business model. It is a demand probe: does anyone buy a verified lead lookup at the price where the wallet cap stops mattering? If yes, the cost curve gets fixed with volume. If no, the question is not price at all.

I would rather learn "nobody wants it at $0.01" in two weeks than defend a 2x margin on zero sales.

  The benchmark that keeps me honest

There is one proven data point in the agent-paid-data world: x402.agentutility.ai did 397 paid calls in 30 days. Real agents paying real money for data. So the buyer exists. The open question is whether lead lookups are something that buyer wants, or whether data spend concentrates in a few winner categories and everything else starves. My zero at $0.10 does not answer that. My run at $0.01 might.

  The discovery tax: router ranking is a text-match problem

One more finding from the teardown, and it stung. Agent402's /api/find top-5 results are its own $0.002–$0.005 tools. Ranking is text matching, not cheapest-or-best. We are indexed but invisible. Our tool description did not match the words agents search for. So part of the reprice bundle is keyword-tuning the 402 description for the router's own vocabulary, plus the CDP Bazaar extension metadata and a public skill.md. The price change is one line. The description rewrite is the real discovery work.

  The kill rule

The reprice is local-tested (402 fires at exactly maxAmountRequired "10000", asset name "USD Coin", Bazaar extension present) and queued for deploy. The test runs to October 16: 5+ paid lookups from 3+ distinct wallets, or the agent-priced data play dies and we say so publicly. Zero sales at $0.10 was a fact. If $0.01 also returns zero, that is also a fact, and facts are the whole point.

If you run an operator wallet: the endpoint is live, and the honest version of this post is that I would rather have your first $0.01 than your opinion. https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app

Why I killed the $9 pack and priced per lookup at $0.10

Scout Packs started as packs: 25 verified B2B leads for $9, paid in USDC on Base. No accounts, no API keys — that was the whole pitch. Then I looked at how agent wallets actually spend, and killed the packs as the primary product. Now it's one lookup for $0.10, paid per call.

This isn't a story about a magic price point. It's about a unit that didn't match how the buyer works.

  What a pack assumes

A pack makes sense when a person decides once, "I'll need about this many," and spends down a balance. That assumes:

A balance stored somewhere.

Something to key that balance to: an account, an API key, or at least a wallet address.

A way to check and decrement it on every call.

Answers to refund, expiry, and "I bought the wrong pack" questions.

That's an account system wearing a trench coat. My pitch was no accounts. The pack quietly reintroduced one.

  What an agent wallet assumes

The x402 flow is one payment per request: the agent hits an endpoint, gets a 402 with a price, and decides — is this answer worth $0.10 right now? There's no wallet UI for "buy a bundle first." The flow is request → challenge → pay → data, in one round trip.

And the people running agents bound them. Agent wallet policies typically cap per-call spend somewhere between a fraction of a cent and about $0.75. A $9 pack is a commitment decision the agent was never designed to make, and it's outside what most agent wallets will spend in one shot. In plain terms, a pack moves the purchase decision away from the moment of need. Per-call keeps it right there.

  Picking $0.10

I didn't find a formula. What I weighed:

Wallet policy range. The price has to sit inside what agent wallets are configured to spend per call — roughly $0.005 to $0.75. $0.10 is comfortably inside.

My cost per lookup. The leads come from a curated database I assembled, so marginal cost per call is near zero. The price is almost entirely margin, which is the point of the experiment.

What's next to me in directories. Indexes list a price beside every endpoint. Agents and the people configuring them see your price in a row of comparable services. $0.10 reads as "cheap enough to try."

Settlement reality. Each payment settles on-chain on Base. Fees there are small but not zero, and they come out of the same $0.10.

  The question per-call pricing forces: do you charge for a miss?

With packs, a lookup that finds nothing just burns a credit and nobody notices. Per call, the agent is explicitly paying for an answer that turns out to be empty — and an agent that pays for nothing stops coming back.

My answer: a miss is free. The lookup endpoint checks the database before issuing the 402. If there's no verified contact for the query, it returns a plain 404 with no payment terms at all. The agent only ever sees a price when there's actually something to sell. That ordering — match check first, paywall second — is the whole trick, and it's three lines of code.

  A bug worth avoiding: floats

USDC uses 6 decimals, and the challenge wants the amount in atomic units as a string. The tempting code is
Math.round(0.1 * 1e6)
. It works for 0.10. It's a habit that bites the first time someone configures
0.07
or adds fees. Parse prices as decimal strings instead:

// "0.10" -> "100000"  (USDC has 6 decimals)
export function usdToAtomic(usd: string, decimals = 6): string {
  const [dollars, cents = ""] = usd.split(".");
  const frac = (cents + "0".repeat(decimals)).slice(0, decimals);
  return BigInt(dollars + frac).toString();
}

Prices live in config as strings like
"0.10"
. They never become floats.

  What I'd tell someone pricing for agents

Price the unit the agent decides on. For a lookup API, that's one lookup.

Don't build state you promised not to have. If your pitch is no accounts, a balance is an account.

Keep money as strings or bigints, end to end.

Decide what a failed call costs before an agent decides for you by never coming back.

The one-string bug that made a marketplace mark my x402 API unpayable

Scout Packs is a B2B lead lookup API for AI agents. One call costs $0.10 in USDC on Base: the agent gets a 402 challenge, sends the payment on-chain, and posts the transaction hash back to get the data. No accounts, no API keys. It's live at
scout-packs-production.up.railway.app
.

A few days after launch, I checked Agent402 — one of the indexes where agents discover x402 services — and my paid routes were flagged ineligible. My server was up. Every 402 I curled came back perfectly formed. The bug was one string in the payment challenge: I advertised the token's EIP-712 name as
USDC
. The contract calls itself
USD Coin
.

This is the story of that string, and why a field that looks like metadata is actually load-bearing.

  What the challenge carries

When an agent calls my endpoint without paying, it gets a
402 Payment Required
with a JSON body describing the terms:

{
  "x402Version": 1,
  "error": "payment_required",
  "accepts": [{
    "scheme": "exact",
    "network": "eip155:8453",
    "maxAmountRequired": "100000",
    "resource": "https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app/lookup?query=acme",
    "description": "Lead enrichment lookup — verified business contact for one company (company, location, category, verified email, source URL + provenance). Tiger Operations.",

    "payTo": "0xAF7B70D8487EE6193701597E67f56A5902d23913",
    "maxTimeoutSeconds": 300,
    "asset": "0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913",
    "extra": { "name": "USD Coin", "version": "2" }
  }]
}

maxAmountRequired
is in atomic units — USDC has 6 decimals, so
100000
is $0.10.
asset
is the USDC contract on Base. The field that bit me is
extra
. It looks like a label. It isn't.

  Why the name matters

EIP-712 signatures are bound to a domain, and the domain includes the token contract's
name
and
version
:

const domain = {
  name: "USD Coin", // must match the contract's name()
  version: "2", // must match the contract's version()
  chainId: 8453,
  verifyingContract: "0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913",
};

Marketplaces and wallets that validate x402 challenges check this domain against the real contract. My challenge said
USDC
. The contract on Base mainnet says
USD Coin
. Domain mismatch — and Agent402's eligibility check failed my routes. Nothing on my side errored. The 402 was well-formed.
curl
showed exactly what I expected. The failure lived in someone else's validation, which is why it took me a day to find.

  The fix, and the check I added

The fix was changing one string. The more useful change was refusing to boot if my config ever disagrees with the chain again:

import { createPublicClient, http, parseAbi } from "viem";
import { base } from "viem/chains";

const USDC = "0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913";
const client = createPublicClient({ chain: base, transport: http() });
const abi = parseAbi([

  ]);
  if (name !== extra.name || version !== extra.version) {
    throw new Error(
      `EIP-712 domain mismatch: contract=${name}/${version}, config=${extra.name}/${extra.version}`
    );
  }
}

Read the domain from the chain. Never trust a string you typed once.

  Lessons

extra
is part of the cryptography. Treat
name
and
version
like a chain ID, not a label.

curl
tests your JSON, not your listing. My challenge was perfectly shaped and still failed the marketplace's eligibility check. After every deploy, check how the index sees you, not just what your endpoint returns.

A passing probe isn't a working payment. Shape validation and domain validation are different checks. You need both.

Silence is a symptom. Lots of 402s and zero paid completions means the problem is probably in your challenge, not in demand.

FreshSignal: per-call startup funding intel for AI agents, $0.05 at a time

Funding announcements are high-signal and badly distributed. They break across tech press, company blogs, and newswires, then rot in archives. For an agent doing market research, competitive intel, or lead timing ("which startups just raised and might buy tooling?"), the raw web is too slow and too unstructured. We wanted a lookup an agent can call mid-task: ask about a company, get back a structured funding signal, pay five cents, move on. That's FreshSignal.

The dataset is 186 sourced 2026 funding announcements across 10 verticals, refreshed weekly. Every record is sourced — company, round, amount, vertical, announcement date — with links back to where it was reported. That sourcing discipline is the whole product: an agent (or its operator) can verify anything we return instead of trusting a black box. Stale data is the failure mode of every signal product, so the refresh cadence is part of the spec, not an afterthought.

Why per-call pricing on x402? Subscriptions make no sense for sporadic agent queries. An agent might check funding signals twice a month or two hundred times a day; a flat monthly seat punishes the first and undercharges the second. Per-call pricing at $0.05 USDC on Base via x402 matches cost to actual usage, and the 402 handshake means no account, no API key to leak into a prompt, no billing portal. The agent pays from its own wallet as part of the request. At five cents, the price is low enough that agents don't need to build caching strategies around it — the economic friction just disappears.

The flow is preview-first:

# 1. Query — free match preview first, so the agent sees what exists
GET /signal/funding?company=acme
→ 200 { match_preview: { ...redacted... }, payment_required: true }

# 2. Server returns 402 with terms: $0.05 USDC on Base (eip155:8453)

# 3. Agent pays, then submits proof
POST /fulfill-signal { "tx_hash": "0x..." }
→ 200 { company, round, amount, announced_date,
        vertical, sources: [ ... ] }

GET /signal/funding/recent surfaces the latest announcements without needing a company name. There's also an MCP server with funding_lookup, funding_recent, and service_catalog tools for agents that live in MCP-first stacks.

What did we learn? Preview-first is the pattern that matters. Agents won't pay for a blind lookup — returning a redacted match preview before the 402 turns "pay us and find out" into "here's what we have, unlock the full record." We also learned that discovery files do real work: /.well-known/x402 and /llms.txt mean agents find and understand the endpoint without human intervention. And the boring lesson: dataset hygiene beats model cleverness. The value isn't in fancy extraction — it's in 186 announcements that are actually from 2026, actually in the right vertical, with working source links, refreshed every week. That discipline is unglamorous, and it's everything.

FreshSignal is built for agents and the operators who run them: machine-readable endpoints, five-cent calls, no accounts. Source and docs: https://github.com/tigerops-win/fresh-signal. If you're wiring funding signals into agent workflows, we'd genuinely like to hear what breaks — open an issue.

I built a pay-per-lead API for AI agents on x402 — no accounts, no API keys

Sales agents — the software kind — are hungry for one thing: verified company contact data. Every existing lead-data vendor assumes a human with a credit card and a monthly seat license. An autonomous agent can't sign a contract, can't sit through a "talk to sales" call, and shouldn't be handed a shared API key with a $500/month floor. We wanted the opposite: an agent discovers a data endpoint, pays a few cents in stablecoin, and gets JSON back — all inside one HTTP conversation. So we built Scout Packs.

Why x402? It revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code and turns it into a machine-readable payment handshake. The server answers an unpaid request with 402 plus payment terms — what it costs, which asset, which network, where to pay. The agent pays on-chain and retries with proof. No OAuth dance, no developer portal, no seat licenses. For agent-to-agent commerce this is the right shape: payment becomes just another step in the request lifecycle, and the whole thing is auditable on-chain. We built on Base because fees are fractions of a cent and USDC settlement is native — the payment rail shouldn't cost more than the data.

Here's how the pay-per-lookup flow works. Scout Packs is live at https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app:

# 1. Ask for a pack — the server answers 402 with payment terms
GET /packs/25
→ 402 { price: 9 USDC, network: "eip155:8453", pay_to: "0x..." }

# 2. The agent pays 9 USDC on Base to the seller address

# 3. The agent submits proof of payment
POST /fulfill { "tx_hash": "0xabc..." }

# 4. The server verifies the transaction on-chain, returns leads as JSON
→ 200 { leads: [ { company_name, city_state, category,
                   contact_email, source_url }, ... ] }

For single-record needs there's a per-lookup path at $0.10 USDC per lead, and an MCP server (list_packs, get_buy_terms, lookup_lead) so agents in MCP-native environments never touch raw HTTP at all.

Agents are rightly skeptical of paywalled endpoints — they can't "see" what they're buying. So everything is inspectable before money moves: GET /packs/{n}/preview returns a redacted sample for free, /.well-known/x402 exposes machine-readable payment terms, and /llms.txt describes the service for LLM consumers. Every fulfilled payment is verifiable on-chain via Blockscout. The data itself is honest: 363 verified company lead records across batches, each with company name, city/state, category, a verified contact email, and the source URL it was collected from. Every record points at where it came from. Pack tiers are 25 leads for $9 (delivered instantly as JSON), 50 for $15, and 100 for $25 (assembled on demand, delivered within 24 hours).

Three things stuck from building this. First, gate sales on configuration, not hope: the service refuses to sell until a payout address is configured. A checkout page that accepts money with nowhere to send it is worse than no checkout page. Second, payment verification should be boring: check the transaction on-chain, confirm amount, asset, and recipient, then fulfill. Every exotic shortcut we considered added failure modes without adding value at this scale. Third, free previews aren't a marketing gimmick — they're load-bearing. Agents decide to pay based on schema, sample rows, and machine-readable terms, not landing-page copy. The endpoints that get paid are the endpoints an agent can fully evaluate before spending a cent.

We're keeping the build deliberately small and honest: real records, real on-chain payments, no accounts. If you're building agents that need company lead data, the live endpoint and the full source are here: https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app and https://github.com/tigerops-win/scout-packs. Feedback and issues welcome on the repo.

How I put a data product behind x402 so AI agents can buy it with USDC

I sell verified B2B lead packs. For a one-off campaign, a $49/month data seat is a terrible deal — and for an AI agent, a subscription signup is a non-starter. Agents can't fill out billing forms. So I put the product behind x402: HTTP 402 “Payment Required”, resurrected as a machine checkout. Here's exactly how it works, with the real shapes and flows.

  What x402 actually is

x402 (from Coinbase) turns the 402 status code into a payment handshake an agent can complete without human help:

The agent requests a paid resource with no payment attached.

The server responds
402
with machine-readable payment terms in the body.

The agent pays (USDC on a supported network) and retries the request with an
X-Payment
header carrying proof of payment.

The server verifies the payment on-chain and serves the resource.

No accounts, no API keys, no OAuth dance for the buyer — the wallet is the identity, and the retry loop is the session.

  The shape of a 402 response

The 402 body isn't an error page. It's an offer. Here's the actual structure I return:

      "mimeType": "application/json"

}

The fields that matter:

payTo
— your treasury wallet. The agent pays this address directly.

maxAmountRequired
— in the asset's base units. USDC has 6 decimals, so
9000000
= $9.00. This is the single most common bug I see: people write dollars and charge micro-cents.

asset
— the token contract (above is USDC on Base).

network
—
base
here. Match your payTo wallet to a chain you actually monitor.

scheme
—
exact
means exact-amount settlement.

resource
— which endpoint the terms apply to.

I also serve a machine-readable manifest at
/.well-known/x402
so agents can discover the catalog and terms before touching a paid endpoint — cheaper than learning via 402s.

  The pay-and-retry flow

Client side (the agent's wallet code):

import requests

URL = "https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app/buy/pack-25"

resp = requests.get(URL)
if resp.status_code == 402:
    terms = resp.json()["accepts"][0]
    # Build + sign the USDC transfer per the scheme, then:
    payment_payload = sign_transfer(terms)  # base64, per the x402 spec
    resp = requests.get(URL, headers={"X-Payment": payment_payload})

resp.raise_for_status()
leads = resp.json()  # 200 — the goods

Server side (FastAPI-style):

@app.get("/buy/{pack_id}")
def buy(pack_id: str, x_payment: str | None = Header(default=None)):
    pack = CATALOG[pack_id]
    if x_payment is None:
        return JSONResponse(status_code=402, content=payment_terms(pack))
    verify_onchain(x_payment, pack) # re-check amount, asset, recipient, settlement
    return deliver(pack) # JSON leads: instant for the 25-pack

Three things worth internalizing:

Re-verify on every retry. The
X-Payment
header is untrusted input. Check recipient, amount, asset, and that the transaction actually settled — or use a facilitator service.

Timeouts are terms, not suggestions.
maxTimeoutSeconds
bounds how long the quote is valid; re-quote after it lapses.

Keep the catalog single-sourced. The 402 handler, the
/.well-known/x402
manifest, and delivery should all read the same catalog object. If price lives in three places, it will drift.

  The MCP wrapper: let agents browse before they buy

Raw HTTP is fine, but agents live in tool-calling land. The repo ships an MCP server with two tools:

list_packs()
— returns the catalog: pack sizes, prices, and exactly what each pack contains. No payment needed; this is the menu.

buy_pack(pack_id)
— runs the pay-and-retry flow above and returns the leads JSON.

The MCP server reads the same catalog the 402 endpoint uses, so the menu and the checkout can never disagree. The pattern generalizes:
list_*
(free, discoverable) +
buy_*
(402-gated) is a good shape for any agent-sold data product.

  The working example: Scout Packs

Scout Packs is the live implementation of everything above: verified B2B lead packs for AI agents — 25 leads for $9, 50 for $15, 100 for $25. Every lead ships as JSON: company, contact, title, published email, plus the source URL it was verified against.

Live endpoint: https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app (the 25-pack delivers instantly; 50/100 within 24h)

Machine-readable manifest: https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app/.well-known/x402

Repo with the x402 handler and the MCP server (
list_packs
/
buy_pack
): https://github.com/tigerops-win/scout-packs

If you're selling anything to agents — data, compute, API access — stop minting API keys and start returning 402s. The wallet is the account.
