KIX arrivals get the same failure mode as Narita: a QR code in a corridor with no data.

Install on hotel/home Wi-Fi the night before. Turn the Japan line on after landing. Buy a physical SIM at the airport only if the phone refused the eSIM.

ICOCA/Suica tap still works with no data. Maps, IC top-up, and translation do not.

When the counter is the product

The airport counter is a battery with a SIM in it. You sign, you charge it, you drop it in a box on the way home. That is a real product. It is not the default if your phone already has an EID.

The phone has no EID. Dial *#06#. No EID means no eSIM, full stop.
Three or four people sharing one radio and you do not want four checkouts.
You want a laptop online without burning the phone as a hotspot all day.

When the eSIM is the product

One or two phones, eSIM-capable, trip about a week. You install at home. You do not stand in a line with a suitcase.

Ubigi 10GB / 7 days: $14 on their Japan card that day. Networks listed: KDDI and NTT Docomo. Data sharing allowed on their plan cards.
Airalo 7-day 10GB: $17. SoftBank on their Japan page.
Holafly 7-day unlimited lists hotspot as 1GB per day. That is not a family plan.

Two adults: two eSIMs, or one pocket Wi-Fi. Holafly’s daily hotspot cap is the usual way a couple discovers they bought the wrong shape of “unlimited”.

The airport is for people whose phone refused the eSIM, or whose Android cannot hold one.

Holafly’s Japan page: install before or during the trip; the plan starts when you connect in Japan. You still need internet to add the plan. Home Wi-Fi is that internet. A QR code on a phone with no data, in a corridor with bad Wi-Fi, is the failure mode.

Keep the home SIM for boarding. Turn data roaming on for the Japan plan after you land.

What the airport is for

Pocket Wi-Fi counters and physical tourist SIMs exist at NRT and HND. Names, queues, and yen prices change. If your phone is not eSIM-capable, that counter is the product, not a blog’s “best eSIM” table.

Two chips. Two jobs.

People mix them because both live in the same slab of glass.

eSIM is cellular. Dial *#06#. If an EID appears, the phone can hold an eSIM. That says nothing about Suica.
FeliCa (Osaifu-Keitai) is the gate tap. Most phones sold outside Japan do not have it. Those travelers need a physical IC card.

JR East Welcome Suica Mobile (info current as of March 2026 on JR East materials): iPhone / Apple Pay, valid 180 days from issue, remaining balance is not refunded. The company app is listed as iOS and watchOS. It is not an Android product today.

Samsung Japan (April 2026) said overseas Galaxy phones launching from the first half of 2027 are intended to support Welcome Suica Mobile. That is not the phone in your pocket this month.

What to do this month

Pixel, Galaxy, or Pixel-like phone bought in the US or Europe: assume no Suica in Wallet. Buy a physical tourist IC card at Narita or Haneda. Confirm the current product name at the counter — stock has changed since the chip shortage.
The same phone can still take an eSIM. Install it on home Wi-Fi. Keep the home SIM in the second slot if you need SMS codes from your bank.
WhatsApp, Maps, and Translate ride the eSIM. They do not need a Japanese phone number.

If you are walking Shinjuku with maps, stories, and the occasional call, you are not a 1GB person. You are also not a satellite uplink. Most first trips sit between 5GB and 10GB for the week, or they buy a day-capped “unlimited” plan and stop watching the meter.
