Lost Friends

I record my youth with lost words, trying to capture the fading years through the lens of a poet. Little did I know, I am but a grain of sand in the vast ocean, an unknown person, incapable of writing the grand world. All I can do is sigh deeply, holding my wrist alone: It’s just like this.

The end of my junior year also signals the approaching end of my university life. At this point, everyone has their own thoughts, their own pursuits, and their own choices. Whether or not those choices are right for us is another question, but at least we are all striving to make a living. As we part ways, at every corner of the road, many classmates have turned into familiar strangers. I think of how, years later, you won’t recognize me, and I won’t know you. It brings a sense of inexplicable sorrow to my heart.

Meeting each other is fate, and knowing each other is the result of countless lifetimes of cultivation. You say fate is truly magical; those destined to meet will find each other across thousands of miles, while those not meant to meet will sit face to face without ever connecting. We are all but a grain of sand in this vast world. It is fate that brought us together to share three years as classmates, that made us cherish each other, that allowed us to run side by side on the same track, and that led us to be in the same library, immersed in the cleansing power of books. But fate is also what makes us indifferent to each other, what makes us drift apart, what turns us into strangers, and what leads us to separate. Perhaps we come together by fate and part by fate—this is just how it is.

It’s often said, "The more friends you have, the easier the road will be." This shows the importance of friends. Whether a person can succeed often depends on their ability to integrate resources, especially connections. There’s another saying: "Education is the bronze medal, skills are the silver medal, and connections are the gold medal." This highlights the importance of networks. In a country like China, where relationships and human connections are valued so much, networks and relationships become even more significant. Writing this, okay, I might have gone a bit off-topic. Of course, connections aren’t the same as friends. In networks, when you ask for help, it’s often based on favors or interests. Friends, on the other hand, come in many forms—there are drinking buddies, lifelong confidants, platonic friends, and ordinary friends… and so on. A true confidant is something rare and precious. Some lifelong friends are those you’ve known for a long time, even childhood companions, while others are people you meet by chance, yet feel like you’ve known forever. The number of lifelong friends is always limited. If you consider many people to be your lifelong confidants, then those aren't truly lifelong friends. Such friendships need to be nurtured, and they will become a great treasure in life.

Losing touch, especially between friends, is a very common thing. If there are no common topics, no shared values, or no similar circles, you’ll naturally grow further apart. But believe that true friendship is like a fine wine—the older it gets, the richer and more precious it becomes. Years later, even if you haven’t contacted each other or communicated much, when you need help or face difficulties, you’ll immediately extend a hand, offering support and sharing your heart to solve the problem. No matter how much life’s trivial matters get in the way, having such a friend is one of life’s greatest blessings.

Since it’s so easy for friends to become lost, where do we go from here? I think the best approach is to let things happen naturally, without forcing anything. Those who understand you don’t need an explanation, and those who don’t, don’t deserve one. Because those who understand you, already do, and explaining is just unnecessary. As for those who don’t understand you, they never will, so what’s the point of explaining? Many things in life can’t be forced; even if forced, the result will be like a squashed fruit—still unripe, still not sweet, and maybe even lost. Whether I gain or lose, it’s my destiny. Sometimes, you have to believe that everything is predestined. I think the best attitude is to accept things as they come.

To be lost, is a common human condition, a natural part of life—it’s just how things are.

Because I Believe in Love

"Ask the world, what is love? It compels one to pledge life and death."

Love is an eternal topic in this world. Family, love, friendship—emotions are intertwined. And because of love, people often have endless imaginations.

As the maple leaves gently fall, a couple strolls hand in hand, chatting about the little things in life. In the dusk, as the sun sets, a couple of elderly people support each other, with the fading sunlight casting a feeling of quiet solitude. This kind of life is so enchanting.

I believe in fate. My view of love is that everything should happen naturally, love at first sight. A forced love will never be sweet. While it’s true that we should strive for what we want, if there is no mutual attraction from the start, how can such a love last? Only love at first sight can lead to a lifetime of mutual care and support. When fate arrives, everything will naturally fall into place. So, why chase after something relentlessly? After experiencing countless heartaches, why should we stop believing in love? I am a passionate person. I would change a lot for someone I like, and I would persist for that one person. As long as there’s hope ahead, the road will never have an end.

In this vast sea of people, it's a rare event for two people to pass by each other, let alone meet, get to know each other, and fall in love. The probability of two people encountering, understanding, and loving each other is almost infinitely close to zero. Fate is truly magical—when it’s meant to be, love will find a way. No matter where you are, fate will bring two people together.

Under the pressure of various interests, many people have started to lose faith in love. In today’s society, a happy marriage is often built on a solid material foundation. But I still believe in love, no matter how difficult it may be. Don’t let past heartaches make you say that true love doesn’t exist.

The world is full of ups and downs, but finding a soulmate to share the storms of life with and growing old together—that’s the greatest happiness in life.

"Take my hand, and we’ll grow old together." To meet, to know, to love. Treat your other half well, don’t hurt, betray, or deceive them. If you are a man and you’re married, treat your wife with care. Think about it—your wife has given her brightest years and most beautiful moments to you. What reason do you have not to treat her well?

While striving for success, avoid being troubled by matters of the heart. When you need to focus on your goals, do not waste time. Make sure to use time wisely, and never do anything that harms others. When you achieve success, everything will naturally fall into place.

Love cannot be rushed. As long as the emotions are in place, many things will unfold naturally. The more you desire something, the less likely it is to come. The less you hope for it, the more likely the outcome will surprise you. Four words: "Go with the flow."

Love should be unwavering; love should be unforgettable; love should endure forever. Love should last a lifetime.

Living is Just an Attitude

In the same world, it’s your attitude that shapes how it feels. The same situation, your perspective is what defines it.

As long as you're in a good mood, nothing will seem too bad. Life will respond to you in the way you approach it. The world itself doesn't change based on our subjective consciousness, but our own biases and perceptions can reflect the world’s colors. That’s why, on an overcast day filled with dark clouds, some people feel down, while others are still in high spirits.

I believe a person’s values change over time. It’s only after experiencing things that we truly understand. What seemed precious back then may now feel light and distant; things that were once hard to let go of may now feel like a vast, open sky; decisions we once stubbornly clung to may now lead to a sudden awakening. How we once viewed things shaped how we lived then; how we see things now shapes the life we live today, with all its vibrant hues.

We’re not lacking in information, but in deep thinking and a soulful heart. We are always learning from life. Reading more books is certainly good. Some people love reading and can read as much as they want, while others may not enjoy reading but can still immerse themselves in the beauty of life. There’s no need to force yourself to read in order to gain knowledge. It’s not about how many books you read, but about their depth, the thoughts you have while reading, and the reflections you gain afterward. Society itself is a great book, and many kinds of knowledge cannot be found in textbooks. So, as the saying goes, "Different people see different things," and everything needs to be looked at from multiple perspectives.

Living is just an attitude.

The Four Survival Rules for DBAs

 1. Backup Comes First

We must always remember that systems will eventually crash. Without an effective backup, you're just waiting for the inevitable! I often joke that the only thing that can wake a DBA up in the middle of the night is the thought of not having a valid backup.

 2. Think Thrice Before You Act

Always be clear about everything you're doing, or better yet, don’t do it! Sometimes, pressing "Enter" or running a single command can cause an irreparable disaster. Therefore, you need to confirm everything you’re about to do, and, when necessary, protect the scene.

 3. rm is Dangerous

Be aware that in UNIX/Linux, this command means you might lose everything permanently, so double-check your actions!
Too many people have regretted using "rm -rf." I wrote this rule after being woken up one morning by a friend who had accidentally run "rm -rf" and deleted 200GB of a database—without a backup.
The only advice I could give him was: Stay calm.

 4. You Set the Standards

Good standards are the foundation of minimizing failures. As a DBA, you need to establish and enforce these standards, which even guide developers and system administrators. This can help prevent both intentional and unintentional mistakes, thereby reducing the risks to the database.
We know that on well-managed database servers, even "rm -rf" might be restricted.
Perhaps there are even more rules we need to follow. That's why I always emphasize that DBAs must be meticulous and focused. Of course, I also really like another saying: "A person of extraordinary resilience will accomplish anything."

These four fundamental rules are my humble advice, shared with my fellow DBAs.

Parents in China

As the tree desires stillness but the wind continues to blow, a child desires to care for their parents but the parents are no longer there. There are a few things in life that cannot wait: the fleeting passage of time, the heart of filial piety, and the love we encounter.

Parents' lives are not easy. They have worked hard for decades, their hair turned grey, and their faces marked with wrinkles. Everything they do is for their children, sparing no effort to provide a good life, to send them to the best schools, buy the best clothes and shoes, and offer the best food. The hearts of parents everywhere are full of sacrifice—how much they give, and what do we do for them in return? Yet many people, living in comfort, fail to realize their blessings, and hurt their parents over and over again. How wrong that is. No matter what, we should never break our parents’ hearts.

Jay Chou has a song called Listen to Mother’s Words, and it’s truly a good song. Indeed, no matter when, we should always listen to our mothers. Parents always have our best interests at heart, so we should never complain that they’re too nagging. Every interruption, every moment of impatience, is the greatest harm to them. Take the time to carefully, attentively, and patiently listen to their advice, even if you don't want to.

In this lifetime, a few decades is all we get—don't leave behind regrets. Spend more time with your parents when you can. I’m still in college, and I only get to see my parents twice a year. In about a year, I will graduate and step into the workforce. Once I start working, if my parents are not nearby, I will only be able to see them once a year. When you calculate it, the time we spend with our parents is truly limited. Do those trivial matters really matter so much? Compared to our parents, they are probably as light as a feather. So, why not spend more time with them? No matter how great our achievements may be, the greatest hope of our parents is that we live safely and happily.

Parents are selfless and don’t expect much in return. In this complicated world, only this familial love remains the purest.

Parents have it hard, so cherish them as you walk through life.

This article is dedicated to the ones I love the most—my parents.

Talking About Personality

A long time ago, I read a passage that went something like this: The lower-class person has neither ability nor control over their temper; the middle-class person has both ability and a temper; the upper-class person has ability but no temper.

If you look at the people around you or those throughout history who have achieved great accomplishments, many of them are known for their good temper. A good temper, someone who rarely gets angry, shows that they don't sweat the small stuff. A person’s happiness isn’t about how much they own, but about how little they fuss over things.

Five years ago, I was a person with a very strange temper. I’d get upset over the smallest things, and as a result, I had very few friends—many classmates kept their distance from me. My bad temper even made me sick. There’s an old saying: Anger harms the spleen; stress harms the liver. When a person has a strange temper or a bad personality, they often end up with all sorts of weird health issues. Steve Jobs was an example of this. Looking back, I realize how foolish I was. Even though I knew my bad temper wasn’t helping me or anyone else, I still clung to it. Being able to recognize this now shows that I’ve grown up.

On the other hand, if you want to achieve something, you must have a good personality. Optimism, positivity, extroversion, enthusiasm, kindness, and sincerity will make you shine, even if your appearance isn't particularly striking. A good personality will help you make lasting friendships, expand your network, and allow you to succeed in your endeavors.

Today, I came across a quote from someone: A pessimist sees the world from the foot of the mountain; an optimist sees it from halfway up; a person with a broad perspective sees it from the top. I think people with good personalities are more likely to reach an optimistic or even a broad perspective in life.

A good personality takes you farther.

What Does One Seek in Life?

Lately, I’ve been distracted by many trivial matters, and I haven’t had time to do the things I truly enjoy. Even in my unconscious state, I’ve found myself thinking about many issues.

Time management is a crucial skill for achieving great accomplishments. A person’s time in a day is limited, so how to make the most of that limited time to gain the greatest benefit is something worth considering. I set small daily plans for myself, placing high-priority and urgent tasks at the top. I tackle them first and distinguish whether they’re completed or not by using different colors. If an important task isn’t finished, I make sure to find a way to complete it the next day or carve out some time for it. I also use “hidden time” (time that is less visible) to do smaller tasks. This is part of my time management.

I’m not very good with words and prefer expressing my thoughts through writing. However, to achieve more well-rounded development, language skills are essential. So, I take every opportunity to improve myself in this area.

In my class, we discussed luxury, a topic with so much to say. The luxury goods market in China is thriving, and I think this has a lot to do with the Chinese mindset. Chinese people value face and the tradition of gift exchange. To satisfy their vanity and show off their social status, many are willing to spend large amounts of money on luxury items. Many families spend on luxury goods before they’ve even achieved financial security, and luxury items are becoming younger and more fashionable. This kind of consumer mindset is unhealthy. Contentment brings happiness, and a simple life is the truest form of richness.

I saw a piece of news that read, "7-year-old daughter repeatedly asks, 'What’s the meaning of life?' Mother posts for support." Aside from the innocence and curiosity of the child, this is a question worth pondering. What is the meaning of life? What do we seek in life? This is a question that one must reflect on throughout their life. My thoughts now will certainly be different from those years down the road. For me, living is about realizing one’s own value, and what we seek in life is ultimately to fulfill Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. We’re often busy chasing after things, without realizing that many of our pursuits are meaningless. Years later, how much value will all the busyness of today hold? What does one truly seek in life?

The Attitude of a Programmer

I’m sure everyone has heard the saying, "Attitude determines everything." Only now do I truly understand the meaning of this phrase.

A person’s attitude can determine the outcome of something they do. The more humble, serious, passionate, and proactive the attitude, the better the result tends to be. On the contrary, the opposite can easily be imagined.

I have deeply experienced this myself. Sometimes, when I approach something with a negative mindset, I tend to adopt a half-hearted attitude, and as a result, the outcome is poor. When I think about it, what a waste of time and energy, not to mention how it harms my health and affects my emotions. The way you approach something is often how the result turns out.

I’ve seen plenty of examples around me where people missed good opportunities, made mistakes, or hurt others simply because of a bad attitude. Only when it’s too late do they regret it—wishing they had seized the opportunity when they had the chance. Life doesn’t offer a "regret pill." Knowing this, why not do things right from the start? Think twice before acting. Don’t let a poor attitude leave regrets in your life.

Attitude shapes the direction of everything.

I’ve grown used to living alone.

I started liking her in my second year of high school, and now it’s been four or five years. After graduation, I never saw her again—until that day when I ran into her after so long. I realized that I still loved her deeply. Even now, she remains the only one I love, irreplaceable in my heart.

From the day I met her, her smile became deeply engraved in my memory. High school studies were intense, and I never dared to say the words I had been holding in for so long. When the college entrance exams ended, we had a gathering. I drank quite a bit that day, and finally, under the influence of alcohol, I “bravely” confessed my feelings. As expected, she turned me down. Later, I found out she already had a boyfriend—our class’s chemistry representative, just like me. I was heartbroken. That summer, I felt helpless and drowned myself in alcohol and distractions. Every night, she appeared in my dreams—I was intoxicated by her presence.

I thought I could forget her, but I couldn’t. She was studying medicine in Nanchong. One day, I somehow got her contact information and called her. That familiar voice, that sweet laugh—they hadn’t changed at all. We talked for a long time, and it was such a joy.

After that, we stayed in touch frequently. I even added her number to my “family contacts.” Every conversation filled me with happiness—I always wished those calls could last forever.

After a long time, I finally gathered my courage to confess once more. Some things, you either do now or never get the chance again. Even if I were rejected again, I wanted no regrets. As expected, I failed once more. But this time, I felt calm—no longer devastated like before. Maybe I had grown more mature, more aware of what could be and what could never be.

One day, she came to my house to hang out. We played mahjong together. She sat to my left. Sometimes my hand brushed hers accidentally, and warmth rippled through my heart. I stole glances at her—her soft hair, a few strands covering her eyes, her cheeks flushed red under the sunlight. She looked so beautiful.

Now, we’re still in touch. Every message or call still makes me incredibly happy. How I wish she were my other half. But in reality, we’re just good friends. Inside, I’m torn—on one side, I still love her; on the other, she doesn’t accept me. In the stillness of night, when I revisit those deeply buried memories, waves of emotion surge in my heart. We understand each other, yet we are destined not to love. What pain that is. If only—if only it were possible—how wonderful it would be. But everything that begins with “if” becomes unreal in the end.

I am the kind of person who is steadfast and devoted in love—once I’ve chosen, it’s forever.

Everyone carries a few scars they dare not mention. When that wound is reopened, it hurts so deeply. I don’t want to think about it, yet in the dark of night, when the world is quiet, I can’t help but think of her. How many sleepless nights have I tossed and turned, entranced by thoughts of her? The familiar song “Fireworks Easily Cold” plays in my ears, and I search within its lyrics for traces of our story. Beyond fate that endures even life and death, what kind of wound is the “Jiangnan rain”? What loneliness hides within Luoyang City, within the Qianan Temple? All the ties of fate built over lifetimes leave behind tears after the rain—yet all I can truly do is long for eternity.

If, in the next life, I meet you again, I will still, without hesitation, say to you with all my heart: I love you.

Poverty and Growth

In recent years, I've spent the New Year with my grandmother, as my parents don’t return home for the holiday. When others ask why my parents don’t come home, for those who genuinely care about us, I say it's because my parents can't afford to spend the money to come back for the New Year. For those who are insincere, I tell them they’ll return only in the summer.

I’ve gotten used to life at school, where spending time with my classmates and teachers is so enjoyable. At home, I find myself longing to return to school more than I ever longed to return home while at school. When I’m at home, it feels like there are no relatives, and very few people who truly care about us. I never used to talk about my relatives, but now I see they are insincere and petty. I feel uncomfortable around them. Whenever there’s some benefit to be gained, there are conflicts. What confuses me the most is how even familiar neighbors, and sometimes even relatives, treat us this way. It makes me feel helpless. I admit that we are poor, but does being poor mean we deserve to be looked down upon and mocked? Everyone has dignity. When you cross someone’s bottom line, you’re planting the seeds of resentment, which might quietly explode one day. I really don’t like this, whether it’s from my father’s side of the family or my mother’s side. I truly envy those harmonious big families. You’d think that since we’re all siblings, we wouldn’t make such a fuss over small things. How I wish I had an aunt whom I love and who loves me back. How I wish I had an uncle who is kind to me and whom I can be good to. But I don’t have that. My own uncle is closer to others than to us. He won’t even stop by my house for a moment, yet he’ll go to other people’s homes for meals. Others give heavy gifts when visiting, while we’re treated like outsiders. I see everything and keep it in my heart. I know that the ones who are truly hurt and saddened by this are my parents. But right now, I can’t share their burdens. However, one day, I will rise above this and make sure no one looks down on our family again. The world is cold and people are unpredictable, and dealing with others is always so difficult.

I am a poor child, and poverty has taught me to work even harder. It has taught me to cherish every bit I earn through hard work. Poverty has made me understand the cold and warmth of the world and has made me learn independence at an early age. Everything has two sides, and often the bad things in life help you grow faster. You should thank those who hurt you because they are the ones who make you stronger. I once heard a saying: "Perhaps some people appear in your life just to teach you a lesson." Don’t complain about anything; instead, be grateful for everything you have.

My mother says most people want to see you live in poverty. The better you do, the more they envy you. I think there’s some truth to that. But I believe those who think like this will never achieve greatness. If you can’t tolerate others being better than you, you’ll never be able to accomplish anything big.

“Thirty years in the east, thirty years in the west.” All suffering is temporary, and happiness can’t last forever either. There’s no such thing as a road that leads directly down to the earth or up to the heavens. Life is the same way. You never know what tomorrow will bring. Tomorrow’s you, today’s you, and yesterday’s you are never the same. What you should do is cherish the present and live in a way that you can be proud of. Years later, when you look back on your past, you want to be able to say you did everything with a clear conscience. My mother says it doesn’t matter how others treat us; what’s important is that our family lives in harmony. I would add that what matters most is your own mindset. Don’t let others influence your beautiful life.

Talk About Belief

If a person lives without belief, it’s as if they’re a walking corpse.

Strong belief can help us achieve our goals. A firm belief can point us in the right direction. A firm belief can prevent us from wavering.

I have a younger sister who tends to give up on something as soon as she faces the slightest setback. To this day, she has achieved nothing. Take her attempt at learning to ride a bicycle, for example. She gave up on it after falling just once. I don’t even know how many times I fell when I was learning. Without the ability to endure hardship and without strong belief, one is bound to achieve nothing.

Tibetans have a deep and unwavering religious faith. They hold their beliefs with utmost devotion, which is why Tibetan Buddhism is revered, respected, and admired by many. A person who has strong belief and perseveres in their efforts earns respect and admiration.

The height of one’s belief determines the height of one’s life. The further your mind can reach, the further you can go. Most successful people have strong belief and trust that they can succeed.

Belief is the direction of the heart.

We Are Social Animals

We are social animals, and living alone is simply not feasible.

There are people around us who prefer to be solitary, thinking of themselves as some sort of "master" in their own world. But have you ever thought about how they’ve gotten to this point? They do everything alone, bear all responsibilities by themselves, and hardly communicate with those around them. It’s hard to imagine. If this continues, it will not only harm them but also become a burden to those around them. In our profession, though there are instances of individuals who quietly make their mark and build their own success, that was in the past. Just because it happened then doesn’t mean it will happen in the future, although we can’t entirely rule out the possibility. For the development of a well-rounded and balanced personality, this would undoubtedly be a disaster.

We are social animals, and that will never change. Humans are emotional beings, and forming bonds over time is only natural. If you’ve always been alone, it’s hard to imagine how you would adapt to society in the future, because once you enter the workforce, avoiding interactions with others is simply impossible. So, I remind everyone not to be too reclusive.

We are social animals, so spend more time interacting with others.
