Welcome to this remote software developer team projects showcase!

Below are team projects done by people who came together to build & learn in a Chingu Voyage.

p.s. There were so many awesome projects that we had to split this up into two articles. 😂 We'll have another showcase article coming out in the next few weeks so stay tuned.

Without further ado, let's dive in!

 1 — Welcome to Chingu!

So, you’re going to be joining a Chingu Voyage? Here’s a welcome from the community. 😃

2—Why Chingu exists and how can it help me?

So you’ve been conditionally accepted to a Chingu Voyage?

Guess what?!

Not only are you now on a path to accelerate your learning, meet new developer friends from across the world, and gain experience working in a team, you’ll also be contributing to Chingu’s Moonshot mission of…

Helping unlock the world’s tech talent through collaboration!!!! 🚀

Since 2016, Chingu has helped people get jobs at companies like Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and even Freecodecamp!

Chingu exists to help people from around the world come together to build together & reach their goals. Chingu members gain confidence in their skills, finish actual projects for their portfolio, and gain experience working in real remote teams (these are all things employers happen to love 😉 ).

Here’s a few videos of Chingu members:

 3— Roadmap: What’s next & how can I start?

Step 1: Read this article

Step 2: Join the Chingu Discord server (the invite link can be found in your onboarding email).

Step 3: Answer the question: Do I have a completed solo project I can submit?

Step 4a): If yes , submit that project via the Project Submission Form (this form can be found in your Chingu onboarding email).

Step 4b): If no , the first step is to build a solo project & submit it. You can find solo projects to build here.

Step 5: Receive feedback on your project & add the Voyage launch date to your calendar!

 Schedule for Voyage 33

There are 2 due dates to keep in mind when getting started.

Solo project submission due date : August 24, 2021

Voyage team launch date : August 30

Each Voyage team project lasts 6 weeks.

Note: Each month we launch a new batch of teams working on projects. This is usually around the beginning of the month.

4— What’s the solo project quality check?

In order to maintain quality of teams we require members to submit a completed solo project to be checked before being added to a team.

Some members will join Chingu and have a completed project they can submit right away. For others, this will be an opportunity to finally finish a project from start to finish! 🚀

If you don’t already have a solo project, we recommend building one of these.

Here are some quotes by past members who completed their first solo project:

I finished my first project :) that was amazing.😃

It was a great step in getting me out of tutorial hell. I didn’t realize how much this has hurt my growth until recently.

I learned SO MUCH. It made me feel certain I was able to move on to the next stage (a Voyage team project), and it allowed me to sharpen my Git skills. I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tutorial purgatory tunnel, as I had to complete the project without having a reference guiding me along. I would do a “solo project” every month tbh.

It was an important test. Now that I have successfully completed a project I feel I have what it takes to be a developer.

It really forced me to use skills that I had learned but not really applied

 5 — What can I expect from a Voyage?

Be surrounded by curious builders from around the world

Chingu attracts developers & PMs from around the world. You’ll be surrounded by ambitious learners who share your goals!

Gain experience in a remote software team

People underestimate the skills involved in working in a remote software developer team. Git/Github, merge conflicts, PRs, coordinating tasks, communication nuances, etc. are all a big part of building projects. This is why employers want to hire people with experience.

Get out of your comfort zone

Let’s also not forget: you will be challenged to level-up your skills. This is not a tutorial where you can lazily follow through. Participating in a Chingu project (solo or team) is not easy.

Joining Chingu = getting out of your comfort zone.

 Confidence & a shiny portfolio

You can also expect that if you show grit, you’ll come out with a shiny new project for your portfolio (some teams even build nonprofit projects or projects that create value for others).

6 — How can I prepare for this Voyage?

🔥A) Learn the basics of git/github

When we ask experienced members what the number one way to prepare for a team project is, they all say: Learn the basics of git/github!

If you’re new to git, do this→Learn Git basics in 15 minutes

Set up Git on your computer

These Git articles (written by the legendary Chingu Francesco Agnoletto) shall be your guide! Also: see Francesco’s video on git below for more.

🔥B) Learn and begin to practice these essential Soft Skills

30 principles to level-up your Soft Skills

(Note: if you learn these principles and how to apply them, they’ll change your life).

 Overheard in Chingu

I love commits like those. I once saw a commit titled “I’m sorry” for some super hacky / wonky solution at work. It got replaced a few weeks later with “Cheered up sorry code”

my shirt is finally shipped

I got mine too few weeks ago. I got the white one. They should try making with some other colors.

Recently left my job as the sole front-end developer (also managing a large chunk of middleware in Node), and was hoping my boss would hire somebody at least mid-level to take my place. He hired a junior straight out of bootcamp. Think the company and project risks going under now because of greed or lack of funding. Seen this happen at so many Startups, where they try to keep hiring juniors as codebase gets larger and more complicated. New hire seems cool and is happy to be there but feel a bit bad about it. Their success is my success in a way as you never want a company to go under when you leave. Anyway, just venting and saying know what you are going into when applying for a junior role and don’t feel bad if it seems you are overwhelmed b/c it likely is the employer asking too much rather than you not being able to deliver.

I like watching science related content and space/time come up quite a bit. Imagine a timeline, you see out into the future. Whatever you are struggling with, your future self has already dealt with it. Future you has learned whatever it is. I use this mindset when I’m struggling with something (usually school related) and it helps me relax and not worry so much. Hope it helps you too

i got advice from my mum on this. she said if youre trying to just stay informed, then focus on what affects your life and your immediate community. Its hard worrying about all of the worlds problems

only issue I have since big sur is my HDMI cable. whenever something touches it by accident or I move my laptop, it’s blacking out the screen and if I manage to touch twice within a short amount of time, the mac crashes but besides all good

are you telling us your promotion and Jeff stepping down as Amazon CEO is a coincidence?

hehe hey there btw I found a way for anyone who was dying of the cliffhanger

 Overheard in Chingu

There’s only one Chingu Bot and that’s @Trion — Code for good

I left my job recently due to “burn out” but have a different perspective on it. I think burn out is good, in some ways. It essentially is your brain telling your body that “what you are doing isn’t rewarding” whether because the work is too hard or the rewards are too little or both. Many devs work on their own projects, working incredible hours and dealing with massive stress, but power through it because it’s so rewarding to build something from passion and creativity. I don’t think things are black-and-white. All work takes up energy -> adds stress. Most important thing is: Are you growing (in finances/skills/anything) and do you feel your time invested is worth it? Just my two cents.

I never really hang up laundry. My laundry machine has a closet-ready setting 8) less work. Laziness wtf

I like doing laundry actually. its relaxing & clean and smells good

WHAT!!!!!

self-evaluation and coworker-evaluation in our company in the moment. couple forms and spreadsheets

including professional development during 2020. took me like 3 hours to fill everything out

Reminds me, we’re supposed to have this individual status-talk once a year at work.. to see how we progress. Next one is next week.

Wut. We have meetings with our ceo every other month 👀

I used to be a dev. Now I’m consultant too 😞

I used to work with Cinema4D and After Effects about a decade ago so there’s a lot of similarites

🔥 Congratulations @thinh on getting an Angular Developer job offer!!

🔥 Scott Pence is starting a newsletter, and I highly recommend signing up. He is the kind of person who energizes you to do and be more by virtue of his learning adventures and witnessing how active he is.

I remember when Scott joined Chingu a few years ago. His industriousness reminded me of the wonderful Florin Pop (and for those who know Florin, you know that is big compliment).

You can signup for the newsletter here.

🔥 Throwback project: Here is a past team project by jffy, Fabien, Liviu! They built a Spotify clone.

but I have greek tomatoes and “kefalotiri” (hard goat cheese) which makes it totally Greek

lol he averted disaster this time

Whatever details. Who cares about details. We’re family

i dont think i will ever use an android

learning how Chingu is working (I’m new here) and figuring out if there’s enough time remaining to complete a solo project I guess I don’t need sleep anyways!

Reminds me of my days in the south and now I want some gumbo

There we go. I now officially sent a letter of resignation to my current job, and signed the contract for the new one.

I’m going to be super nervous / anxious until the trial period is over at the new job, but I guess that’s a part of it all

I have my spirits up and I have energy today, so I’m confident I’ll be more productive than…yesterday

is that different from the italian variety there?

Good day, fellows

I’m so happy happy. worked on a couple bugs with front end lead over past weeks, well styling mostly but whatever. all released now

Dinner anywhere makes me hungry (or breakfast or lunch too)

Right now I’m in a position where the amount of work changes a lot (ex. I think I had like 2–3 days of work in the last month) .. so, yeah

I’ll speak to voice coach about getting more tone in my voice

ill try got an idea on what i should add it to

with create-react-app sometimes you dont need run

I can sue for everything in America, right? .. I’m sure it’ll work!

Hi! Are there any TypeScript gurus available to answer a couple questions about using TypeScript with Redux?

Want to melt your brain a bit more? Hit cmd + opt + i on Mac or I guess alt + opt + i on PC ....And if you want a great laugh check the console tab after you do

love feta and coffee not sure what the second thing is but i’m sure its lovely

Today’s Roundtable is going to be an interesting experiment. I’m working hard to resist the urge to read up on GraphQL Server so it’s more real life today. We’ll have plenty of mistakes to learn from

Are changus the cousins of chingus

Yesterday actually, I learned that GitHub has a cli and it’s way more intuitive than git commands

That was the second issue we were having. We got the context to work but when verifying the order existed before saving Entity was ‘double tracking’

I would never use this unless backed into a corner lol

That’s job security…you’re the only one that knows how to fix that bug lol

Ironically other people fixed them, I just had to review their PR (edited)

The real TIL: always escape anything name related.

TIL…I can’t live without git reset --hard HEAD^

I’ve used that so many times lol

you didn’t know Quokkas? the cutest animals there are?

You can’t triple stamp a double stamp, Lloyd!

 Shout-outs & Showcases

🔥 🔥CONGRATULATIONS Kodigo students on completing your projects and having a successful Demo Day event. Can’t wait to showcase these projects!

🔥 Big shout out to @masihtak

let me know when that PR is ready or if you need anything to help with that. I’m excited to get in there and re-factor them quiz pages!

I approved your Layout change. I tried to find something small to complain about, but it looks good

https://medium.com/media/b64ba5bc00533f3816bc24141da7b96b/href

how is the formatter not picking up these issues

How are you today?

pregnant as always

Bam, remote pregnancy. The future is amazing

well I cheated during my vacation — I dared working on my solo project(s). they might never forgive me tehehehe

omg omg omg. Backend started basket on backend. That means I’m soon doing programming again!

That sounds like Viking spy stuff ….

Where do I sign up?

“Søren, the golden goose flies at midnight.” -Royal Denmark National Military People

Sweden invasion begins!

I mean, eh.. gifts for sweden, yay!

gifts === sticks // returns true

this article is spot on. This guy mentions that too. A senior is one who provides value to the company, but more likely one who would provide more than a junior would.(edited)

this guy honestly sounds just like me haha

The criteria for becoming a senior engineer at a ten-person startup will be different from a FAANG company.

To give that perspective, there is a process for checking the right boxes as everything is data driven. When you want to go to next level, ask your manager to plan projects that take you to it. Without this you’ll keep delivering projects of same level and not be able to use that data much. Like I saw some people working too much on automating operations task but not enough features or vis versa. Once they and you think that you are ready, assessment is done. A senior from another organisation accesses your code and system designs. Then feedback is collected from many of your peers. All this goes to someone up the hierarchy, who finally approves or declines it based on data.

 Resource of the Week

Javascript questions to prepare for interviews!

Code for good!

I want to play bowling with a armadillo

Seriously….it doesn’t matter as long as it’s readable, maintainable, and you are productive using it

make them to run after npm i xD

i’m gonna cheat on you guys now and work on a solo project

excuse me a solo project? WE HAVE BEEN ABANDONED BY OUR GODDESS!!!!!!!!

I want to pet a kangaroo! and a penguin

I had a pet squirrel once

React state debugging resources

I am Code for good person :p I won’t put such script

English is only written in like major train stations etc.

I approved your Layout change. I tried to find something small to complain about, but it looks good

uhohhhh i blame backend

TOMORROW DONT BREAK THE LAWS

lol watching this video about why a person moved out of Denmark after moving in. And she was like “Well, they all speak Danish”

I mean, if you live near the German border, some signs are in both German and Danish.

i had too much alcohol last december

People who struggle even get help to find a cheap apartment

Anyway, lose your job here and you get supported by government.. first 2–3 years = around $3.000

for my solo project I’m using heroku for db stuff

 News, Shout-outs & Showcases

🔥 Happy Festivus / holiday season! ⛄️

⏲ Vintage project: Volunteer Managerby a Chingu team (Layer, Nick, Phrixus)

AppVolunteer Manager App helps people to recruit and manage volunteers for a non-profit project.

Stack : MongoDB, Express, React / Redux, Node.js

Chingu project type : Tier 3 🐻

🔥 Trion made a new video on how to get Google’s infamous foobar challenge!

Google Foobar is a secret hiring challenge that allows people to solve levels and get selected by Google. There have been a lot of success stories of people getting into Google through Foobar.

( Note , these type of videos often get removed so it may stop working)

🔥 Related to the above: A few years ago Trion also wrote an awesome article on his experience doing the Foobar challenge. Definitely worth a read!

What’s everyone working on today?

Working on algorithms

yesterday I was doing some big notation with recurrence and masters theorem

I don’t remember masters theorem anymore, I just use the tree method usually now but it is very good way, need to visit again

this AI is fun

How Bad Is Your Spotify?

Translation….they are at the bottom of the Bering Sea

A house

A slide

A gaming chair

And then last minute present wrapping and stocking stuffing

Christmas was a success at the K household. Although I got less than four hours of sleep

have you tried the spotify AI yet?

I’m scared of it. I’m a Ludditte

congrats so happy for you buddy

i miss hockey so much lol

yea, live coding is intense

and hey We have all Canadian division this year!!!

I think many people struggle with Imposter Syndrome

Congratulations for presenting

I just want to start v-26 — Im rushing to it

I absolutely credit chingu with elevating my understanding of web development both quickly and properly. Great community!

I was waiting to see some algorithm kick in once you beat a certain level and it turn into a coding interview …But then … the last challenge

Yeah, but what I’m looking for is to better understand how it appears for each person, it turns out someone suffering from it from fear of judgment, some negative thought, even someone who when they are alone feel fear and surrender. what I need is when you most struggling with the Imposter Syndrome, what works for you what makes you even worst (ex, facing a challenge, code failure and etc)

On twitch to be discovered one has to stay online. That is trouble. my channel is just couple of gaming videos, so don’t know how youtube truly works. need some clickbait videos xD

I’m really eager to help Chingu, if you need help please don’t hesitate to ask me for help!

I was attracted to JavaScript because of the ability to just build something and share it instantly with the world. You put it on the web, and you get a URL, you can send it to anyone with a browser. That was the part that just attracted me to the web and to JavaScript.

I spoke extensively about Chingu in my interviews and the CIO was very impressed with what I accomplished here.

I’ve ran it on our master branch. 11/10 would do it again. But we only use about 40 packages

you will learn to love [key: string] in react/ts

zombie virus incoming

Actually, I thought that with docker-compose you didn’t need a dockerfile. However, in a dockerfile I would have a copy command to setup the root and that’s not something in my docker-compose.yml file. Time for more reading

So, recruiter contacts me on LinkedIn, wanting an informal interview for a position where I would be a “perfect fit”. So I agreed. During the interview, she asks why I would fit the position. So I just said “I looked at the job offer you sent, and I do fill most of your needs regarding frontend”. Then she asks about backend, and I’m honest saying “I’m a frontend developer — I don’t know backend, especially .net Core”.. and then she gets half-annoyed, asking why we’re even having this convo. She comes to me, wanting an interview for a position she thought I would fit. Then she gets annoyed when I didn’t seem super enthusiastic (due to the backend part), and don’t fit the job 100% .. Like .. what

https://medium.com/media/5fc85305b8cb794e790df078b86248e5/href

The job was like 80% frontend and 20% backend

does anyone know a neat trick to somehow force a border to vertically align a pixel higher?

I hear you there. But foggy glasses is temporary. Death is permanent

Thank you both for saving me a bunch of time. I’m not so good when it comes to recursion.

Is there any reason to prefer the ternary operator over the short-circuit evaluation in javascript?

foo ? bar() : null

vs

foo && bar()

which technologies would I use to create the infrastructure to have people log in to an app and it display content for that user? I’m trying to work on the Journal app and add that functionality now that I finished my Voyage. My guess is to connect Auth0 to a database and that would be it. Is that correct?

Hi you don’t give Auth0 access to the database, you use Auth0 to handle authentication to secure your backend API to protect those end points. You can use Auth0 for this, or implement your JSON web token auth system

Hi Everyone! I’m working on some kind of program to defeat Impostor Syndrome for programmers and need some help with research. I need some volunteers who distress from Impostor Syndrome, I will credit your aid in the research if you want or you can entirely be anonymous.

I maintain that we all suck at it, it’s supposed to be hard. Coding is thinking you’re a hopeless idiot 90% of the time and a genius the other 10%.

Yea i was feeling down because I didn’t know sucking at it was part of the job

I get the feeling when I can’t solve something. Like in design reviews I couldn’t find a flaw while rest of the team finds it and starts discussing. I watch some motivational songs and youtube videos to pump up my self esteem. Then I am fine for few days.

they are different foo && bar() will return a boolean true/false, foo ? bar() : null will return either bar() when foo is truthy or null when it is falsy

Coding Goals Make an awesome product with Chingu. And finish my master’s thesis.

which technologies would I use to create the infrastructure to have people log in to an app and it display content for that user? I’m trying to work on the Journal app and add that functionality now that I finished my Voyage. My guess is to connect Auth0 to a database and that would be it. Is that correct?

hey everyone, I submitted my solo project for v26, how can I know if I my project as good enough to join the cohort? thanks very much

Coding History I haven’t been coding very long, off and on for close to a year. I know some Java, a bit of C++ and Swift, and am working on becoming proficient with HTML, CSS, and JS.

Strengths My strength is learning new technologies. I am driven to be better tomorrow than I am today.

After getting motivated by Rick Astley, I got cured
