After more than 20 years working in tech and teaching beginners how to code, I have learned that teaching yourself to program is totally doable and actually pretty rewarding when you approach it the right way. The key is starting with the basics like variables, loops, decisions, and data structures and really understanding how they work. From there, having a clear learning path and using solid resources makes a huge difference. Getting your hands dirty by writing code, breaking it, and fixing it is where the real learning happens. Staying disciplined and building good habits helps keep things moving forward, especially when motivation dips. It also helps to connect with other learners and developers in places like this so you can ask questions, share progress, and stay inspired. With coding skills in demand across so many fields, self taught learners who stick to these ideas can move forward with confidence and keep improving over time.

Troy Tuckett is the author of several books and videos designed for beginners.

Hello. My name is Troy. I have been teaching beginners the principles of programming for many years both at the college and community levels. I recently finished a course for beginning java coding called Java Coding for Absolute Beginners. Would love your thoughts on it (good or bad) to help me continue to make it more effective.
