Community adherence to current control measures is one of the vital factors that determines the success of controlling the spread of COVID-19. This adherence depends on the knowledge and attitude of a community toward COVID-19 and their precautionary measures against the disease.

This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of the community from the Aseer Region, Saudi Arabia, toward COVID-19 and their precautionary measures against the disease.

The descriptive cross-sectional study involved an online sample of participants from the Aseer Region, Saudi Arabia, who were recruited based on a nonprobability convenience sampling method from April to May 2020. The self-administered online questionnaire comprised four parts the first included the demographic details of the participants; the second consisted of 11 closed-ended questions that assessed the participants' knowledge of COVID-19; the third contained six closed-ended questions that assessed the participants' overall attitude toward COVID-19y measures against COVID-19, which is associated with obtaining information about the virus from the Ministry of Health website.
This study confirms that residents of the Aseer Region have high knowledge of, demonstrate a positive attitude toward, and use appropriate precautionary measures against COVID-19, which is associated with obtaining information about the virus from the Ministry of Health website.
High prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities (PCs) has been widely documented in caustic substance ingestion cases. However, their effect on the clinical features and prognostic outcomes remains unclear due to the paucity of discussion. We report on detailed clinical courses with long-term multifaceted outcomes and review the association between caustic ingestion and each specific PC.

The retrospective chart review included 396 adults (median follow-up, 16.6 months) with and 377 without (control group) PCs treated between 1999 and 2018 at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. LY2109761 Smad inhibitor All PCs were diagnosed/confirmed by psychiatrists through face-to-face interviews.

The PCs predicted serious esophagogastroduodenoscopy grading, higher rates of admission/surgery/intensive care unit stay, increments of systemic/gastrointestinal complications, and poorer 5-year overall survival rates. The poor survival among patients with PCs was highly consistent with their baseline characteristics. Significantly advanced age, more non-PCs, alcoholism, illicit drug abuse, and baseline unhealthy status resulted in statistically higher risks of severe complications and limited recovery.

PCs changed clinical patterns and had critical roles in the survival outcomes of caustic injury victims. Clinical awareness achieves benefit by limiting injuries in mild cases or allowing emergent interventions in severe cases. Future studies based on worldwide populations are essential for realizing geographic differences.
Access to essential health care is one of the major factors associated with maternal mortality. In developing countries, improving women's access to health care has significantly reduced maternal death. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the determinants of access to health care among women in East African countries based on 2008 to 2017 Demographic and Health Surveys (DHSs).

This study used secondary data from 2008 to 2017 DHSs of 12 East African countries. A two-level mixed-effects logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the variables associated with women's access to maternal health care. The adjusted odds ratios (AORs), 95% CI, and P-value were computed. Variables with P<0.05 were considered as determinants of access to maternal health care.

A total of 148,483 study participants were included in this study. Women who accessed health care were 64,218 (42.91%) in the region. The study revealed that access to women's health care was positively associated with factors; being educaplanned pregnancy were the predictors of access to health care. Therefore, there should be a common strategy to enhance the accessibility of health service utilization among women in the region and financial support for the poor that enables women to use health services. For better health care access, increasing the awareness of women and their partners about the significance of utilization of healthcare service focusing on uneducated persons are crucial activities.
is a common enteric parasite of controversial pathogenic roles in human diseases. Although the prevalence of
infections has been investigated in a diverse range of populations, there is little knowledge on the molecular epidemiology and risk factors of
infections among general populations in southeastern China.

A total of 507 individuals were randomly selected in Yunnan province, China from July 2016 to March 2017. Stool specimens were sampled for detection of
sp. using PCR assay, and the risk factors of
infections were identified.
isolates were subtyped, and the associations of
infections and subtypes with clinical manifestations were examined.

The overall detection rate of
sp. was 9.47% (95%
7.13-12.44%). Toilet type (
= 3.248, 95% CI 1.245-8.473), anemia (
= 2.601, 95%
1.245-8.473) and type of daily drinking water (
= 3.11, 95%
1.557-6.213) were identified as risk factors of
infections; however,
infections showed no associations with clinical symptoms. Four ections. ST3 is the dominant subtype of Blastocystis sp. characterized, and ST1 correlates with anemia. Improving hygiene conditions, developing healthy lifestyles and intensifying health education programs are strongly recommended to reduce the prevalence and transmission potential of Blastocystis infections.
The value of identifying and targeting population demographics at high risk of stroke based on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) with electronic health records (EHRs) in Shanghai is largely undiscovered.

To test the hypothesis that establishing an evidence-based support system composed of PROs integrated with EHRs could be effective at identifying individuals at high risk of suffering from stroke.

The patients included in this study joined the hypertensive patient management system from 2014 to 2018. We merged the Hypertension Patients Management Database and the Diabetes Mellitus Patients Management Database of Shanghai Jiading district, then kept the hypertension patients with or without diabetes. We subsequently performed a screen analysis utilizing EHRs to target the population with any risk factor for stroke, namely, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, smoking and physical inactivity. We also calculated the distribution of each risk factor and the combinations of risk factors.

In the Jiading District of Shanghai, 46,580 hypertensive patients with complete baseline information joined the hypertensive patient management system from 2014 to 2018.LY2109761 Smad inhibitor

Withdrawal, but not craving, mediated the effect of drug use severity on the nucleus accumbens' response to drug cues. We did not find similar effects for the neural responses to stimuli unrelated to drugs. Our findings emphasize the central role of withdrawal symptoms as the mediator between the clinical severity of OUD and the brain correlates of sensitization to opioid-related cues. They suggest that in OUD, baseline withdrawal symptoms signal a high vulnerability to drug cues.
Guidelines regarding head and neck surgical care have evolved during the coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic. Data on operative management have been limited.

We compared two cohorts of patients undergoing head and neck or reconstructive surgery between March 16, 2019 and April 16, 2019 (pre-COVID-19) and March 16, 2020 and April 16, 2020 (COVID-19) at an academic center. Perioperative, intraoperative, and postoperative outcomes were recorded.

There were 63 operations during COVID-19 and 84 operations during pre-COVID-19. During COVID-19, a smaller proportion of patients had benign pathology (12% vs 20%, respectively) and underwent thyroid procedures (2% vs 23%) while a greater proportion of patients underwent microvascular reconstruction±ablation (24% vs 12%,). Operative times increased, especially among patients undergoing microvascular reconstruction±ablation (687 ± 112 vs 596 ± 91 minutes, P = .04). click here Complication rates and length of stay were similar.

During COVID-19, perioperative outcomes were similar, operative time increased, and there were no recorded transmissions to staff or patients. Continued surgical management of head and neck cancer patients can be provided safely.
Whether a patient's outcomes are better when receiving nutritional counselling during cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has been scarcely described. We compared changes in weight, waist circumference (WC) and blood pressure (BP) in patients attending CR with and without nutritional counselling.

A retrospective analytical study was conducted in which two groups of patients who completed a phase II CR (36 sessions) were compared CONTROL [n=144, mean (SD) age=59(12)years, 17% females], comprising patients without nutritional counselling (attended between 2003 and 2009), and NUT [n=128, mean (SD) age=60(13)years, 27% females], comprising patients with dietitian-delivered nutritional counselling (attended between 2010 and 2019). Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to compare changes in weight, WC, and BP during CR between groups. Logistic regression models determined the probability of reducing weight and systolic BP (SBP).

NUT group decreased weight [-1.3(3.1)kg; P<0.0001] and WC [-3.0(3.8)cm; P<0.0001] to a greater extent than CONTROL [weight -0.4(3.1)kg; P=0.51; WC -1.4(4.5)cm; P=0.02]. In CONTROL, 7% reduced≥5% weight and 31% reduced≥10mmHg SBP, whereas, in the NUT group, 18% reduced≥5% weight and 47% reduced≥10mmHg SBP. Patients in NUT (versus CONTROL) were more likely to lose≥5% of weight (odds ratio=4.27, 95% confidence interval=1.69-10.80; P<0.01) and reduce SBP≥10mmHg (odds ratio=3.15, 95% confidence interval=1.58-6.27; P<0.01).

Patients who received nutritional counselling during CR improved anthropometric measures and were more likely to lose weight and reduce SBP than patients without nutritional counselling.
This study aimed to calculate HCV testing rate and prevalence of anti-HCV according to socio-demographic factors in primary care in Catalonia, Spain, from 2011 to 2016, and to identify the rate and determinants of attrition at linkage to specialized care. Patient data from 274 primary care centres (3414 PCP) were analysed, including socio-demographic information, morbidity, laboratory tests and treatments (1-Jan-2011 to 31-Dec-2016). Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to examine HCV testing rate, HCV seroprevalence and rate of attrition at linkage to specialized care. In the study period, there were 839 072 people tested for HCV infection and 21 156 with first-time positive anti-HCV test results. Rate of HCV testing was 143.54/103 pop (95% CI 143.26-143.83). Women had higher HCV testing rate (158.65/103 women [95% CI 158.24-159.07]), compared to men (128.10/103 men [95% CI 127.72-128.49]). The highest HCV testing rate was among people aged 25-34 (284.11/103 pop [CIs 283.10-285.12]). The anti-HCV seroprevalence was 3.62/103 pop (CIs 3.57-3.67). The highest prevalence was found among men (4.20/103 men [CIs 4.12-4.27]), people aged 45-54 (7.19/103 pop [CIs 7.01-7.37]), people aged 75-84 (7.26/103 pop [CIs 6.99-7.53]), Spanish (3.68/103 [CIs 3.61-3.75]), European and Northern Americans (5.64/103 [CIs 5.33-5.96]) and Asians (9.78/103 [CIs 9.21-10.35]). From those who had a positive anti-HCV result, 49.8% (N = 10 528) were not linked to specialized care. Appropriate clinical care pathways and referral systems need to be established to ensure optimal linkage to specialized care for people newly diagnosed with HCV in primary care.
Succinate activates the receptor GPR91 identified in the bladder. The present study aims to unravel the mechanisms of bladder relaxation by succinate and how the receptor is involved in structural and functional changes of the bladder.

Physiological recordings of bladder function were carried out by cystometry and organ bath from C57BL/6 mice, homozygous GPR91
mice, and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. GPR91 expression was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction and tissue morphology was examined by light (Masson trichrome) and fluorescence microscopy. Nitric oxide (NO) and ATP secretion were measured.

Bladders of GPR91 KO mice had a greater mass to body weight ratio with a thicker bladder wall compared to C57BL/6 mice. They also displayed increased basal and maximal bladder pressures, and decreased intercontraction intervals, bladder capacity, micturition volume, and compliance. During cystometry, bladders of SD rats and C57BL/6 mice instilled with succinate (10 mM) showed signs of relaxation while bladders of GPR91 KO mice were unresponsive.click here

Maternal diet can influence the developing immune system of the offspring. We hypothesized that maternal fibre and gluten intake during pregnancy were associated with the risk of celiac disease in the child. In the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa, n = 85,898) higher maternal fibre intake (median 29.5 g/day) was associated with a lower risk of celiac disease in the offspring (adjusted relative risk 0.90, 95% CI 0.83 to 0.98 per 10 g/d increase). Gluten intake during pregnancy (median 13.0 g/d) was associated with a higher risk of childhood CD (adjusted relative risk = 1.21, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.43 per 10 g/d increase). These results were largely unaffected by adjustment for the child's gluten intake at 18 months. In an independent study of 149 mother/child dyads, maternal fibre intake did not predict concentrations of total or sub-types of short-chain fatty acids in repeated infant stool samples, or fecal microbiome diversity in the mother or child. Our results suggest that high fibre and low gluten intake during pregnancy could be protective factors for celiac disease, although the mechanism is unknown. The increasing demand for high-density data storage leads to an increasing interest in novel memory concepts with high scalability and the opportunity of storing multiple bits in one cell. A promising candidate is the redox-based resistive switch repositing the information in form of different resistance states. For reliable programming, the underlying physical parameters need to be understood. We reveal that the programmable resistance states are linked to internal series resistances and the fundamental nonlinear switching kinetics. Corticosterone The switching kinetics of [Formula see text]-based cells was investigated in a wide range over 15 orders of magnitude from 10[Formula see text] s to 250 ps. The capacitive charging time of our device limits the direct observation of the set time below 770 ps, however, we found indication for an intrinsic switching speed of 10 ps at a stimulus of 3 V. On all time scales, multi-bit data storage capabilities were demonstrated. The elucidated link between fundamental material properties and multi-bit data storage paves the way for designing resistive switches for memory and neuromorphic applications.Wheat blast caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae pathotype Triticum (MoT) is an emerging threat to wheat production. To identify genomic regions associated with blast resistance against MoT isolates in Bolivia and Bangladesh, we performed a large genome-wide association mapping study using 8607 observations on 1106 lines from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre's International Bread Wheat Screening Nurseries (IBWSNs) and Semi-Arid Wheat Screening Nurseries (SAWSNs). We identified 36 significant markers on chromosomes 2AS, 3BL, 4AL and 7BL with consistent effects across panels or site-years, including 20 markers that were significant in all the 49 datasets and tagged the 2NS translocation from Aegilops ventricosa. The mean blast index of lines with and without the 2NS translocation was 2.7 ± 4.5 and 53.3 ± 15.9, respectively, that substantiates its strong effect on blast resistance. Furthermore, we fingerprinted a large panel of 4143 lines for the 2NS translocation that provided excellent insights into its frequency over years and indicated its presence in 94.1 and 93.7% of lines in the 2019 IBWSN and SAWSN, respectively. Overall, this study reinforces the effectiveness of the 2NS translocation for blast resistance and emphasizes the urgent need to identify novel non-2NS sources of blast resistance. The focus of this paper is on elastic metamaterials characterised by the presence of wide sub-wavelength band gap. In most cases, such mechanical property is strictly connected to the periodic repetition of the unit cell. Nonetheless, the strict periodicity requirement could represent a drawback. In this paper, we present a design strategy for aperiodic elastic metamaterials in order to achieve the same performances as for the periodic counterparts. This is done by exploiting the concept of separation of modes for different building blocks, arranged in aperiodic fashion. A theoretical explanation is provided, as well as numerical simulations; the concept is validated by means of a set of experimental tests on prototypes that are realized via additive manufacturing.Primary vitreoretinal lymphoma (PVRL) often masquerades as other uveitic diseases. We investigated the aqueous cytokine level changes and the effects of intraocular methotrexate (MTX) in patients with PVRL. In this retrospective consecutive case-series study, we reviewed the records of 14 consecutive patients with PVRL treated between 2018 and 2020. The concentrations of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IL-17, interferon (IFN)-γ, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were determined at baseline and several time points after intravitreal MTX injections during follow-up. Markedly elevated IL-10 levels and a higher IL-10/IL-6 ratio were found in patients with PVRL. The aqueous levels of IL-10, IL-12, and TNF-α, and the IL-10/IL-6 ratio significantly decreased at 1 month after intravitreal MTX therapy onset compared with the baseline values (P = 0.001, 0.002, 0.001, and 0.001, respectively). The mean duration to normalized IL-10 levels was 1.17 ± 0.4 months. Where serially recorded IL-10 levels were available, regular intravitreal MTX treatment was associated with rapid reduction in IL-10 levels, while elevated IL-10 level was associated with disease recurrence. Elevated IL-10 levels and high IL-10/IL-6 ratio may aid in the diagnosis of PVRL. Aqueous IL-10 level monitoring can help assess the therapeutic response and indicate disease recurrence. This work reports an analytical method for determining electrical resistivity (ρ) and sheet resistance (RS) of isotropic conductors. The method is compared with previous numerical solutions and available experimental data showing a universal behavior for isotropic conductors. An approximated solution is also reported allowing one to easily determine ρ and RS for samples either with regular or arbitrary shapes.Corticosterone

Hand hygiene (HH) is an important patient safety measure linked to prevention of healthcare-associated infection yet how outbreaks affect HH performance has not been formally evaluated.

A controlled interrupted time series was performed across five acute-care academic hospitals using group electronic monitoring. This system captures 100% of all hand sanitizer and soap dispenser activations via a wireless signal to a wireless hub divided by a previously validated estimate of the number of daily HH opportunities per patient bed multiplied by the hourly census of patients on the unit. Daily HH adherence 60 days prior and 90 days following outbreak on inpatient units was compared to control units not in outbreak over the same period, using a Poisson regression model adjusting for correlation within hospitals and units. Predictors of HH improvement were assessed in this multivariate model.

In the 60 days prior to outbreak, units destined for outbreak had significantly lower HH adherence compared to control units (IRR of 0.91 (95% CI 0.90-0.93; p <0.0001). Following outbreak, the HH adherence among outbreak units increased above controls (IRR 1.04, 95% CI = 1.02-1.06; p <0.0001). Greater improvements were noted for outbreaks on surgical units, involving antibiotic-resistant organisms and enteric outbreaks, as well as those where healthcare workers became ill.

Hospital outbreaks tend to occur on units with lower HH adherence and are associated with rapid improvements in HH performance. Group electronic monitoring of HH could be used to develop novel prospective feedback interventions designed to avert hospital outbreaks.
However, a small amount of roughage is incorporated in finishing diets to help prevent ruminal acidosis, although few studies have examined optimum roughage inclusion level in barley-based diets. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of roughage proportion in barley-based finishing diets on growth performance, feeding behavior, and carcass traits of feedlot cattle. Crossbred beef steers (n = 160; mean body weight ± SD, 349.7 ± 21.4 kg) were allocated to 20 pens that were assigned randomly to four dietary treatments (five pens of eight steers per treatment). The treatment diets contained barley silage at 0%, 4%, 8%, and 12% of dietary dry matter (DM). The remainder of the diets (DM basis) consisted of 80%, 76%, 72%, and 68% barley grain, respectively, 15% corn dried distiller's grains, 5% mineral and vitamin supplement, and 32 mg monensin/kg diet DM. The diets were fed as total mixed ra9, 163.8, 158.5, 160.6 g/kg DMI; P = 0.023). When averaged over the study, proportion of barley silage in the diet had no linear or quadratic effects (P > 0.10) on meal frequency, duration of meals, intermeal duration, or meal size, but eating rate decreased linearly with increasing silage proportion (P = 0.008). There was no diet effect on liver abscesses (P ≥ 0.92), and effects on carcass characteristics were minor or nonexistent. We conclude that increasing the proportion of barley silage in a feedlot finishing diet at the expense of barley grain to minimize the incidence of ruminal acidosis may decrease feed conversion efficiency.Outcome after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is adversely affected by relapse to a considerable degree. To exploit the graft-versus-leukemia effect more effectively, we assessed the feasibility of early initiation of epigenetic therapy with panobinostat and decitabine after allo-HSCT and before donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI) in poor-risk patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or refractory anemia with excess blasts with International Prognostic Scoring System score ≥1.5. A total of 140 poor-risk patients with AML aged 18 to 70 years were registered, and 110 proceeded to allo-HSCT. Three dose levels were evaluated for dose-limiting toxicities, including panobinostat monotherapy 20 mg at days 1, 4, 8, and 11 of a 4-week cycle (PNB mono group) and panobinostat combined with either decitabine 20 mg/m2 (PNB/DAC20 group) or decitabine 10 mg/m2 (PNB/DAC10 group) at days 1 to 3 of every 4-week cycle. After phase 1, the study continued as phase 2, focusing on completion of protocol treatment and treatment outcome. PNB mono and PNB/DAC10 were feasible, whereas PNB/DAC20 was not related to prolonged cytopenia. Sixty of 110 patients who underwent transplantation were eligible to receive their first DLI within 115 days after allo-HSCT. Grade 3 and 4 adverse events related to panobinostat and decitabine were observed in 23 (26%) of the 87 patients, and they received epigenetic therapy. Cumulative incidence of relapse was 35% (standard error [SE] 5), and overall survival and progression-free survival at 24 months were 50% (SE 5) and 49% (SE 5). Post-allo-HSCT epigenetic therapy with panobinostat alone or in combination with low-dose decitabine is feasible and is associated with a relatively low relapse rate. The trial was registered at the European Clinical Trial Registry, https//www.clinicaltrialsregister.eu, as ECT2012-003344-74.Primary effusion-based lymphoma (EBL) presents as a malignant effusion in a body cavity. The clinicopathologic features and prognosis of primary human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8)-negative EBL remain unclear. We therefore conducted a retrospective study of 95 patients with EBL, regardless of HHV8 status, in Japan. read more Of 69 patients with EBL tested for HHV8, a total of 64 were negative. The median age of patients with primary HHV8-negative EBL at diagnosis was 77 years (range, 57-98 years); all 58 tested patients were negative for HIV. Primary HHV8-negative EBL was most commonly diagnosed in pleural effusion (77%). Expression of at least 1 pan B-cell antigen (CD19, CD20, or CD79a) was observed in all cases. According to the Hans algorithm, 30 of the 38 evaluated patients had nongerminal center B-cell (non-GCB) tumors. Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNA was positive in 6 of 45 patients. In 56 of 64 HHV8-negative patients, systemic therapy was initiated within 3 months after diagnosis. Cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (CHOP) or CHOP-like regimens with or without rituximab (n = 48) were the most common primary treatments.read more

Chitin derived from seafood wastes is a sustainable biopolymer, which can be used to constructe new materials to reduce the environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable plastics. Herein, nanofibrous microspheres fabricated from chitin solution were used as carriers to construct three different chitin-supported Pd catalysts through diverse activation methods, subsequently revealed their differences in structure and performance. The palladium nanoparticles were firmly and highly dispersed on the microspheres due to the interconnected nanofibrous networks and functional groups of chitin, confirmed by various physicochemical characterizations. As the best candidate catalyst of Pd/chitin-Ar, in the CO oxidation reaction, which achieved 100% CO conversion with a lower Pd content, and exhibited excellent stability in 24-hours cycle reaction. Importantly, the catalyst was further applied in Heck coupling reaction, which also displayed competitive catalytic activity and stability (∼6runs, 94%). Setanaxib cell line This utilizing of biomass resource to build catalyst materials would be important for the sustainable chemistry. The advent of high-performance conductive organohydrogels, which are sustainable in extremely cold environment, has attracted immersing interest in biosensors. In this work, a highly stretchable, self-healable, adhesive and antibacterial cellulose-based ionic conductive organohydrogel with low-temperature strain sensitivity was developed, using in-situ polymerization of acrylamide in glycerol-water with poly (vinyl alcohol), chitosan, FeCl3 and 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TCNF). Owing to their chemically cross-linked structures and multiple H-bonding networks, the organohydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties, such as high stretchability (540 %), high compression strength (0.44 MPa), nearly 87 % self-healing efficiency and adhesive to various substrates. Also, good antibacterial property was confirmed by the diameter of inhibition zone (∼5.1 mm) against Salmonella enteritidis. Notably, the organohydrogels remained high conductivity and flexibility even below -20 °C, which can be applied as low-temperature strain sensor for real-time. Therefore, it has promising applications in artificial intelligence and personal healthcare under cold environment.Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), as emerging green solvents, provide a new opportunity for the biorefinement of biomass, component extraction, and cellulose nanofibrillation. Herein, different carboxylic acid-based DESs were applied for preparation of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) from cellulose raw materials accompanied by simultaneous esterification modifications of CNFs. The results showed that pretreatment of DESs combined with mechanical treatment can swell and esterify the cellulose materials, producing CNFs with widths less than 100 nm. The DES pretreatment temperature played important roles in the esterification modifications and nanofibrillation of cellulose. The esterification modifications of cellulose prevented the over-hydrolysis and dissolution of cellulose during the DES pretreatment, guaranteeing CNFs with high yields of 72 %-88 % and maintaining the cellulose I crystal structure. Moreover, the esterified CNFs were used as a reinforcement to prepare CNF-strengthened polylactic acid (PLA) composites. The surface esterification of the CNFs improved their dispersibility and interfacial compatibility with PLA, thereby achieving the mechanical enhancement of CNF/PLA composites. The synthesis and specific surface functionalization of antimicrobial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their incorporation into an alginate hydrogel is described. Divalent cation-mediated ionic crosslinking was used to disperse the AgNPs throughout the gel, made possible by -COO- cross-linking sites provided by the surface-enhanced nanoparticles, inspired by the classic egg-box model crosslinking of calcium alginate. An AgNP concentration, 10-20 μg g-1 increased hygrogel elasticity, viscosity, and shear resistance by 45, 30, and 31% respectively. Cryo-TEM revealed evenly distributed AgNP assemblies of discrete AgNPs throughout the gel matrices. FTIR-ATR indicated AgNPs were involved in alginate carboxylate-Ca2+-COO-AgNP crossbridging, which was not achieved through mixing of AgNPs into preformed gels. Live/dead fluorometric assays determined a minimal bactericidal concentration of 25 μg g-1 Ag for 6 microorganisms. Anti-biofilm assays showed species-dependent cell death of 44 -61%, with limited silver ion release of 0.41% and 1.1% after 7 days for Gram positive and negative bacteria, respectively.A simplistic synthesis approach for fabrication of ultra-light density (2.2 to 24 mg. cm-3), highly porous (98.4%-99.8%), and cross-linked natural cellulose aerogel from rice straw was developed via a freeze-drying process. The obtained natural cellulose aerogels exhibited porous network structure with specific areas of 178.8 m2. g-1 and mesopore volumes of 0.8 cm3. g-1. The cellulose aerogel with 1.3 wt% displayed the highest Young's modulus and compressive strength. Subsequent hydrophobic coating with methyltrimethoxysilane, the super-hydrophobic and oleophilic cellulose aerogel (water contact angle as high as 151 ± 7°) were capable of adsorbing a wide range of organic solvents and oils with adsorption capacities up to 170 g. g-1 based on the density of the liquids. Furthermore, the adsorbed organic solvent could be desorbed by means of simple mechanical squeezing. These results suggested that the super-hydrophobic natural cellulose aerogel can be used as a precious sorbents for adsorption of oil and organic solvents. The aim of this study was to develop a novel Kappa carrageenan (κCA)-coated Starch/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) with adjustable mechanical, physical and biological properties for hemostatic applications. Results indicated that compared to Starch/CNF hydrogel, mechanical strength of κCA-coated Starch/CNF hydrogels significantly enhanced (upon 2 times), depending on the κCA content. Noticeably, the compressive strength of Starch/CNF increased from 15 ± 3 kPa to 27 ± 2 kPa in the 1% wt. κCA coated sample. Furthermore, the surface modification of Starch/CNF hydrogel using κCA reduced swelling ability (upon 2.3 times) and degradation rate (upon 2 times). Hemolysis and clotting tests indicated that while the hybrid hydrogels were blood compatible, they did not significantly change the blood clotting ability of starch matrix. The synergistic effects of Starch/CNF hydrogel and κCA coating provided excellent properties such as superior mechanical properties, adjustable degradation rate and blood clotting ability making κCA-coated Starch/CNF hydrogel a desirable candidate for hemostatic applications.Setanaxib cell line
