Ansible Certification Is Complicated

Ansible is the most widely used configuration management and automation tool in DevOps. It's agentless, uses YAML, and runs on everything. But when it comes to certifications, the landscape is messy.

Red Hat acquired Ansible in 2015 and folded it into their certification program. There's no standalone "Ansible Certified" exam anymore — Ansible skills are tested as part of the RHCE and through the EX407 (now EX374) specialist exam. Both cost $450 and require hands-on performance-based testing.

If you just want to prove you know Ansible, that's a lot of friction and money. Here's how the options break down.

 The Ansible Certification Options

Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) — EX294

The RHCE has been redesigned around Ansible automation:

$450, 3.5 hours

Performance-based exam (entirely hands-on, no multiple choice)

Requires active RHCSA ($450 prerequisite)

Covers: Ansible playbooks, roles, modules, inventories, variables, templates, vault, troubleshooting

Valid for 3 years

Best for: system administrators in Red Hat environments who automate with Ansible daily

The catch: you need RHCSA first, making the total investment $900+ before you even touch Ansible certification. And both exams are hands-on with no partial credit.

Red Hat Certified Specialist in Ansible Automation — EX374

$450, 4 hours

Performance-based exam

No prerequisite (but RHCSA knowledge expected)

Covers: Ansible Automation Platform, execution environments, automation controller, playbook development, roles, collections

Focuses specifically on Ansible Automation Platform (the enterprise product)

Best for: engineers working with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform specifically

The catch: this targets the enterprise Ansible Automation Platform, not vanilla open-source Ansible. If you use Ansible at the command line without the Automation Platform, much of the exam content won't match your daily work.

 TrueCert Ansible Track

TrueCert offers a progressive Ansible certification path:

Level

Certification

Questions

Time

Price

Introduction

Ansible Introduction

10

10 min

Free

Fundamentals

Ansible Fundamentals

20

30 min

$14.99

Professional

Ansible Professional

25

50 min

$29.99

Advanced

Ansible Advanced Automation Engineer

25

55 min

$44.99

Covers open-source Ansible — playbooks, inventory management, modules, roles, variables, templates, vault, error handling, optimization, and advanced automation patterns. Timed, randomized from a large question bank, instant results.

 Head-to-Head Comparison

RHCE (EX294)

EX374 Specialist

TrueCert Ansible

Price

$450 (+$450 RHCSA)

$450

Free – $44.99/level

Total cost

$900+

$450

$0 – $89.97

Format

Hands-on

Hands-on

Timed MCQ + scenarios

Duration

3.5 hours

4 hours

10–55 min per level

3 business days

3 business days

Instant

Prerequisite

RHCSA required

None (RHCSA recommended)

None

Focus

Ansible + RHEL admin

Ansible Automation Platform

Open-source Ansible

Retake

$450

$450

7-day cooldown (free)

Levels

1

1

4

 Which Should You Choose?

Choose RHCE if:

Your employer requires Red Hat certifications

You work in a RHEL/CentOS environment and need to prove both Linux admin and Ansible skills

You already have RHCSA

Your company will reimburse the $900+

Choose EX374 if:

You specifically work with Ansible Automation Platform (the enterprise product)

You need a Red Hat credential but don't want to go through RHCSA first

Your role involves automation controller, execution environments, and collections

Choose TrueCert if:

You use open-source Ansible (not the enterprise platform)

You want to verify your skills without spending $450–$900

You want progressive levels from beginner to advanced

You need instant results and verifiable credentials

You're preparing for RHCE and want to benchmark your Ansible knowledge first

 What's Actually Tested

Whether you choose Red Hat or TrueCert, the core Ansible skills overlap:

Fundamentals (tested everywhere):

Playbook structure and YAML syntax

Inventory management (static and dynamic)

Modules — command, copy, file, template, service, package, user

Variables — vars, facts, registered variables, precedence

Handlers and notifications

Conditionals and loops

Professional level:

Roles — structure, dependencies, Galaxy

Templates with Jinja2

Ansible Vault for secrets

Error handling — blocks, rescue, always

Tags and limiting execution

Performance optimization — forks, pipelining, async

Advanced level:

Custom modules and plugins

Dynamic inventory scripts

Callback plugins

Ansible in CI/CD pipelines

Large-scale automation patterns

Testing with Molecule

 The Practical Approach

Step 1: Take the free Ansible Introduction — 10 questions, 10 minutes. See if you actually know the basics.

Step 2: If you pass, move to Ansible Fundamentals ($14.99). This covers the same core topics as the RHCE Ansible sections.

Step 3: Ansible Professional ($29.99) tests roles, vault, error handling, and optimization — the skills you need for production automation.

Step 4: If you want to prove advanced expertise, the Advanced Automation Engineer ($44.99) covers custom modules, testing, CI/CD integration, and large-scale patterns.

Step 5: If your employer specifically requires RHCE, go for it — you'll be well-prepared after validating your knowledge across TrueCert's levels. And you'll have saved yourself from discovering gaps during a $450 exam.

 The Bottom Line

Red Hat's Ansible certifications are rigorous and respected — but at $450–$900 with hands-on exams and multi-day wait times for results, they're a serious investment.

Most engineers using Ansible day-to-day don't need the Red Hat brand. They need proof they can write playbooks, manage inventories, use roles, and automate at scale. TrueCert verifies exactly that — starting free, with instant results, across four progressive levels.

Start with the free Ansible Introduction and see where you stand. Or explore how Ansible fits into the bigger picture in our Best DevOps Certifications in 2026 guide.

Not Every Certification Has to Be Hard

Most cloud certification guides push you toward the AWS Solutions Architect or CKA — exams that take months to prepare for and cost $150–$395. That's fine if you're ready. But what if you're not?

Maybe you're switching careers and need a quick credential. Maybe you want to prove baseline knowledge before committing to an expensive exam. Maybe you just want to know where you stand.

Here are the easiest cloud certifications in 2026, ranked from simplest to hardest.

65%

Docker Introduction

10 min

Free

65%

Kubernetes Introduction

10 min

Free

65%

Why it's easy:

10 questions, 10 minutes

Tests fundamentals only — concepts, terminology, basic use cases

No scheduling, no proctoring, no prerequisites

Instant results with a verifiable Open Badges 2.0 certificate

Free retry after 7-day cooldown

Who it's for: Anyone who wants a quick, verifiable credential proving they understand cloud basics. Career changers, students, or experienced engineers benchmarking their knowledge.

 2. Microsoft Azure Fundamentals — AZ-900

Difficulty: Beginner

$165, 45 minutes, ~35 questions

Pure multiple choice — no labs, no hands-on

Covers cloud concepts, Azure services, security, pricing

No prerequisites

Microsoft sometimes offers free vouchers at virtual training events

Why it's easy: The content is broad but shallow. If you understand what cloud computing is, you can pass this with 1–2 weeks of study. It's a knowledge check, not a skills test.

Who it's for: People targeting Azure/Microsoft enterprise environments who want an official Microsoft badge.

 3. AWS Cloud Practitioner — CLF-C02

Difficulty: Beginner

$100, 90 minutes, 65 questions

Multiple choice + multiple response

Cloud concepts, AWS services overview, billing, security basics

No prerequisites

Why it's easy: Similar to AZ-900 — tests breadth, not depth. You don't need to know how to configure anything, just understand what services do and when to use them. Most people pass with 2–4 weeks of study.

Who it's for: Anyone entering the AWS ecosystem. The most popular entry-level cloud cert.

 4. Google Cloud Digital Leader

Difficulty: Beginner

$99, 90 minutes, 50 questions

Multiple choice

Cloud concepts, GCP services, digital transformation, security

No prerequisites

Why it's easy: Google's equivalent of the Cloud Practitioner. Conceptual knowledge, no hands-on skills required. The question pool is smaller than AWS or Azure exams.

Who it's for: People targeting GCP environments or Google-heavy companies.

 5. CompTIA Cloud+ (CV0-004)

Difficulty: Intermediate

$369, 90 minutes, ~85 questions

Multiple choice + performance-based questions

Vendor-neutral — covers cloud architecture, security, deployment, troubleshooting

No prerequisites (but CompTIA recommends 2–3 years of experience)

Why it's harder: Performance-based questions require you to actually solve problems, not just pick answers. The scope is broader than vendor-specific foundational exams. And at $369, the cost of failure is high.

Who it's for: IT generalists who want a vendor-neutral cloud credential, especially in government or defense roles where CompTIA is valued.

 6. TrueCert Fundamentals Assessments

Difficulty: Intermediate

Assessment

Time

Cost

Passing Score

AWS Fundamentals

30 min

$14.99

70%

Azure Fundamentals

30 min

$14.99

70%

GCP Fundamentals

30 min

$14.99

70%

Why it's harder than Introduction: 20–25 questions, 30 minutes, higher passing score. Tests applied knowledge — not just "what is S3?" but "when would you use S3 vs EBS vs EFS?"

Who it's for: Engineers who've used a cloud platform and want to prove working knowledge before investing in an expensive vendor cert.

 What About Kubernetes and Terraform?

The CKA ($395) and HashiCorp Terraform Associate ($70.50) are often listed alongside cloud certifications, but they're not beginner-level:

CKA is a hands-on terminal exam — you need real Kubernetes experience

Terraform Associate requires understanding of HCL, state management, and modules

If you want to start with these technologies, use the free TrueCert Introduction assessments in Kubernetes and Terraform first. They're the easiest way to validate your baseline.

 The Difficulty/Cost Matrix

Certification

Difficulty

Cost

Study Time

TrueCert Introductions

Beginner

Free

None

Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)

Beginner

$165

1–2 weeks

AWS Cloud Practitioner

Beginner

$100

2–4 weeks

Google Cloud Digital Leader

Beginner

$99

2–3 weeks

TrueCert Fundamentals

Intermediate

$14.99

Minimal

CompTIA Cloud+

Intermediate

$369

2–3 months

 The Smart Starting Point

If you're not sure where to start:

Take a free TrueCert Introduction — AWS, Azure, or GCP. Ten minutes, zero cost, instant feedback.

If you pass easily — you already know the basics. Skip the vendor foundational exam (save $100–$165) and go straight to TrueCert Fundamentals or an associate-level cert.

If you don't pass — now you know what to study, and it cost you nothing to find out.

Don't spend $100–$165 on a beginner exam to discover you're not ready. Start free, verify your level, then invest wisely.

The Problem With "Free" Cloud Certifications

Search for "free cloud certifications" and you'll find two things: expired promotions and certifications that are free to study for but still cost $100+ to take the exam.

Most cloud certifications aren't free. AWS exams start at $100. Azure starts at $165. GCP starts at $99. And that's before you factor in study materials, practice exams, and the time investment.

But there are legitimate free options in 2026. Here's what actually exists, what it covers, and whether it's worth your time.

 Actually Free Cloud Certifications

 1. TrueCert Introduction Assessments (Free)

TrueCert offers free Introduction-level assessments across all major cloud and DevOps technologies:

Assessment

Topics

Time

AWS Cloud Introduction

EC2, S3, IAM, networking, cloud concepts

10 min

Azure Introduction

Azure services, resource groups, basics

10 min

GCP Introduction

Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, IAM, basics

10 min

Kubernetes Introduction

Pods, deployments, services, architecture

10 min

Docker Introduction

Containers, images, Dockerfiles, basics

10 min

Terraform Introduction

IaC concepts, HCL, providers, state

10 min

Linux Introduction

Commands, permissions, processes, shell

10 min

What you get:

Timed, randomized assessment — 10 questions, 10 minutes

Instant score and results

Verifiable Open Badges 2.0 certificate if you pass (65%+)

Add to LinkedIn with one click

Discount code for the next level (Fundamentals)

No credit card. No course. No catch.

 2. AWS Cloud Quest (Free Tier)

AWS offers Cloud Quest, a role-playing game that teaches cloud concepts through hands-on labs. The Cloud Practitioner track is free.

Interactive, gamified learning

Uses a real AWS sandbox environment

No certification — you get a digital badge, not an exam-validated credential

Good for absolute beginners learning AWS for the first time

Limitation: It's a learning tool, not a skill verification. You can complete it by following instructions without actually understanding the concepts.

 3. Microsoft Applied Skills Credentials (Free with Learn Profile)

Microsoft offers free Applied Skills assessments through Microsoft Learn:

Lab-based assessments on specific Azure tasks

Free to take (requires Microsoft Learn profile)

Earns a credential badge

Very narrow scope — each assessment covers one specific skill, not broad cloud knowledge

Limitation: These are task-specific, not comprehensive. Passing "Deploy containers by using Azure Kubernetes Service" proves you followed a specific lab, not that you understand Kubernetes.

 4. Google Cloud Skills Boost (Free Tier)

Google offers free introductory courses and labs through Cloud Skills Boost:

Hands-on labs in a sandbox GCP environment

Earns Google Cloud skill badges

Introductory content is free, advanced requires subscription ($29/mo)

Limitation: Badges prove course completion, not skill verification. There's no timed assessment — you just finish the lab exercises.

"Free" Certifications That Aren't Actually Free

Watch out for these:

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner — the exam costs $100. Study materials may be free, but the certification isn't

Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) — exam costs $165. Microsoft sometimes offers free vouchers at events, but the standard price applies

Google Cloud Digital Leader — exam costs $99

Free trial promotions — vendors occasionally waive exam fees during promotional periods, but these are temporary and unpredictable

Free vs Paid — What's the Difference?

Free (TrueCert Intro)

Paid (TrueCert Fundamentals+)

Paid (Vendor Certs)

Cost

$0

$14.99–$44.99

$99–$300

Depth

Fundamentals

Applied knowledge

Comprehensive

Time

10 min

30–60 min

90–180 min

Results

Instant

Instant

24–48 hours

Certificate

Yes (Open Badges 2.0)

Yes (Open Badges 2.0)

Yes (vendor badge)

Verifiable

Yes (unique token)

Yes (unique token)

Yes (vendor portal)

Free certifications prove you understand the basics. Paid certifications prove you can apply the knowledge. Both have value — they serve different purposes.

 The Smart Approach

Here's what we recommend:

Step 1: Take a free Introduction assessment. Pick the technology most relevant to your work —

AWS, Azure, GCP, or Kubernetes. Ten minutes, instant feedback.

Step 2: If you pass, you already know the basics. Move to Fundamentals ($14.99) to prove applied knowledge — or go straight for the vendor cert if you're confident.

Step 3: If you don't pass, you've identified exactly what to study — for free, in 10 minutes, instead of discovering gaps during a $150 exam.

 The Bottom Line

Truly free cloud certifications exist, but they're introductory level. That's fine — they serve a real purpose:

Career changers can prove baseline knowledge to employers

Students can build credentials before graduation

Experienced engineers can quickly verify fundamentals before investing in advanced certs

The key is knowing what free certifications prove and what they don't. A free Introduction certificate says "I understand the basics." A paid Fundamentals or Professional certificate says "I can do the work."

Start with free. Progress when you're ready.

Browse all free assessments or see which path fits your career in our Best Cloud Certifications in 2026 guide.

Best Docker Certifications in 2026 — DCA Is Gone, Here's What to Do Instead

The DCA Is Dead — Now What?

If you've searched for "Docker certification" recently, you've probably noticed the confusion. The Docker Certified Associate (DCA) — the only official Docker certification — was discontinued when Mirantis acquired Docker Enterprise. There is no direct replacement from Docker Inc. or Mirantis.

That leaves Docker as one of the most widely used technologies in the world with no official vendor certification. But that doesn't mean you can't prove your Docker skills. You just need to know where to look

 Docker Certification Options in 2026

 1. Cloud Provider Container Certifications

AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure all include Docker and container knowledge in their certifications, but none of them are Docker-specific:

AWS Certified DevOps Engineer — covers ECS, ECR, and container deployment, but Docker is a small part of a much larger exam

Google Cloud Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer — includes GKE and container concepts

Azure Administrator (AZ-104) — touches on Azure Container Instances

The problem: these are cloud-specific exams that cost $150–$300, require extensive study beyond Docker, and test you on vendor lock-in services rather than core Docker skills.

 2. Kubernetes Certifications (CKA/CKAD)

The CNCF's Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) and Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) are often recommended as Docker certification alternatives. They do cover container concepts, but:

They focus on Kubernetes, not Docker

They cost $395 each

They assume you already know Docker — they don't test it directly

Writing a Dockerfile and managing containers is very different from managing Kubernetes clusters

 3. Linux Foundation Certified IT Associate (LFCA)

The LFCA includes a "DevOps Fundamentals" section that covers container basics. But at $250 and with Docker being just one of many topics, it's not a Docker credential — it's a general IT certification that happens to mention containers.

 4. TrueCert Docker Track

TrueCert offers a progressive Docker certification path:

Level

Certification

Questions

Time

Price

Introduction

Docker Introduction

10

10 min

Free

Fundamentals

Docker Fundamentals

20

30 min

$14.99

Professional

Docker Professional

25

50 min

$29.99

What's covered:

Introduction — containers vs VMs, basic commands, images, Dockerfiles

Fundamentals — Dockerfile instructions, container lifecycle, images and containers, Docker Compose, volumes and storage, Docker networking

Professional — multi-stage builds, container security (scanning, rootless, read-only), registry management, advanced Compose (profiles, healthchecks), resource limits, overlay networking, logging and monitoring, production deployment patterns

All assessments are timed, randomized from a question bank, and produce verifiable Open Badges 2.0 certificates.

 Head-to-Head Comparison

DCA (discontinued)

CKA

Cloud Certs

TrueCert Docker

Docker-specific

Yes

No

No

Yes

Price

Was $195

$395

$150–$300

Free – $29.99

Still available

No

Yes

Yes

Yes

Format

MCQ + labs

Hands-on terminal

MCQ

Timed MCQ + scenarios

Results

24–48 hours

24 hours

Varies

Instant

Covers Dockerfiles

Yes

Minimal

No

Yes

Covers Compose

Yes

No

No

Yes

Covers security

Basic

No

No

Yes (Professional)

 Which Should You Choose?

Choose CKA if you're focused on Kubernetes and already know Docker well. The CKA assumes Docker knowledge — it doesn't teach or test it.

Choose a cloud cert if you need to prove skills on a specific platform (AWS, GCP, Azure) and containers are just part of that picture.

Choose TrueCert if:

You want to verify your Docker skills specifically, not as a side topic in a broader exam

You don't want to spend $195–$395 on a certification that barely covers Docker

You want to start free and progress through levels

You need instant results and a verifiable credential

 The Practical Approach

Here's what we'd recommend:

Step 1: Take the free Docker Introduction on TrueCert. 10 minutes, zero risk. See if you actually know the basics or just think you do.

Step 2: If you pass, move to Docker Fundamentals. This covers the core skills you use daily — Dockerfiles, Compose, networking, volumes. 20 questions, 30 minutes, $14.99.

Step 3: For engineers who manage containers in production, Docker Professional covers multi-stage builds, security scanning, registry management, and production deployment patterns — the skills that separate someone who uses Docker from someone who runs it in production.

Step 4: If your role also involves orchestration, pair your Docker credentials with the Kubernetes track. Container skills and orchestration skills complement each other — Docker is how you build and run containers, Kubernetes is how you manage them at scale.

 The Bottom Line

The DCA is gone and nothing has directly replaced it. Cloud certs and Kubernetes certs include containers as a subtopic, but none of them actually verify that you can write a Dockerfile, debug a container, configure networking, or secure a production deployment.

Docker skills aren't going away — containers are the foundation of modern deployment. The certification landscape just hasn't caught up. TrueCert fills that gap with Docker-specific assessments at every level, starting free.

Start now: Free Docker Introduction or browse the full Docker & Containers career path.

5 Mistakes Engineers Make When Getting Certified

Certifications Should Help Your Career, Not Drain It

The certification industry is worth billions. And a lot of that money comes from engineers making the same mistakes over and over.

Here are the five most common ones — and what to do instead.

Mistake 1: Starting with a Course Instead of an Assessment

Most engineers default to buying a course before they know what they actually need to learn. They spend 40 hours watching videos on topics they already understand, just to get to the 10% they didn't know.

The fix: Take an assessment first. If you've been using Terraform for two years, you probably know 80% of what a fundamentals exam covers. A 10-minute free assessment tells you exactly where your gaps are — then you can study just those topics.

You might discover you're already ready to pass. Or you might find one specific area (state management, modules, whatever) that needs work. Either way, you save dozens of hours.

Mistake 2: Picking the Wrong Certification

Not all certifications are equal. Some are highly recognized in your industry. Others look impressive but don't move the needle with hiring managers.

Common mistakes:

Getting an AWS certification when your target company uses GCP

Earning a general "IT certification" when employers want specific tool proficiency

Stacking beginner certs instead of going deeper in one area

The fix: Before choosing a certification, check 10 job postings for your target role. What do they actually list as requirements? That's your certification roadmap — not a catalog page.

If five out of ten postings mention Kubernetes, get Kubernetes certified. If they mention Terraform, do that. Don't guess.

Mistake 3: Treating Certification as a Finish Line

Passing an exam doesn't mean you're done learning. Technologies evolve. Terraform 1.5 added
import
blocks. Kubernetes deprecated PodSecurityPolicy. AWS launches new services quarterly.

Engineers who earned certifications two years ago and never updated their knowledge are walking around with outdated credentials.

The fix: Treat certifications as checkpoints, not finish lines. TrueCert's career paths are designed for this — start at Introduction, progress through Fundamentals and Professional, then revisit as technologies change.

Re-certify periodically. Not because the certificate expired, but because your knowledge might have.

Mistake 4: Collecting Certifications Instead of Building Depth

Some engineers have 15 certifications across 12 technologies. They know a little about everything and a lot about nothing.

Hiring managers see through this. A resume with "AWS Certified + Azure Certified + GCP Certified + Terraform + Kubernetes + Docker + Ansible + Jenkins + Linux + Python" at the fundamentals level looks like someone who studied for exams rather than someone who builds things.

The fix: Go deep before you go wide. A progression like:

Kubernetes Fundamentals

Kubernetes Administrator

Kubernetes Security Specialist
...tells a much stronger story than three fundamentals certs in three different tools. Depth signals expertise. Breadth signals curiosity. Employers hire expertise.

 Mistake 5: Ignoring Verification

You passed the exam. You got the certificate. Now what?

Most engineers add it to their LinkedIn and move on. But the most valuable thing about a certification isn't the badge — it's the ability for someone else to verify it.

If a hiring manager can't confirm your credential independently, it's just a line on your resume. It might as well say "trust me."

The fix: Use certifications that offer verification. TrueCert provides:

A unique verification token for each certificate

A public verification page where employers can confirm your credentials

Open Badges 2.0 compliant credentials

One-click LinkedIn integration

When you share a credential, share the verification link — not just the badge image.

 The Bottom Line

Certifications are tools. Like any tool, they work when used correctly and waste time when used poorly.

The pattern that actually works:

Assess first — find your gaps with a free assessment

Pick strategically — match certifications to job requirements

Go deep — build a career path in one area before diversifying

Stay current — re-assess periodically

Make it verifiable — use credentials that employers can check

Stop collecting badges. Start proving skills.

Avoid mistake #1 — pick the right cert.
Career Paths vs Single Certifications — What's the Right Approach?

One Cert or a Full Path?

Most people think about certifications one at a time. "I need a Kubernetes cert." "I should get AWS certified." "I'm thinking about Terraform Associate."

But certifications are more valuable when they tell a story. A single Kubernetes cert says "this person knows Kubernetes." A career path — Linux Fundamentals → Docker → Kubernetes → Kubernetes Administrator → Kubernetes Security Specialist — says "this person is a serious platform engineer."

The difference matters more than you think.

 The Case for Single Certifications

Single certifications work when:

You're filling a specific gap — your resume is strong but missing one credential

You're preparing for an interview — you need proof of a specific skill fast

You're mid-career — you already have the broader experience, just need the validation

You're testing the waters — trying out a new technology before committing

In these cases, a career path is overkill. Just get the cert you need.

 The Case for Career Paths

Career paths work when:

You're switching careers — moving from development to DevOps, or from sysadmin to cloud

You're early in your career — you need to build credibility systematically

You're competing for senior roles — you need to demonstrate depth, not just breadth

You want a clear learning roadmap — so you know what to study next

A career path turns individual certifications into a progression. Hiring managers see: this person didn't just collect random credentials, they built expertise systematically.

 TrueCert's Career Path Structure

TrueCert offers 37 active career paths across different roles and technologies. Here's how they're structured:

DevOps Engineer — 9 certs
Linux → Ansible → Terraform → Kubernetes → GitHub → then Professional-level certs in each
Est. 12 hours of assessments

Cloud Infrastructure Professional — 7 steps
AWS + Terraform + Kubernetes + Linux at Fundamentals, then Professional levels
Est. 10 hours

AI Practitioner — 7 steps
AI Fundamentals → Prompt Engineering → Claude → Agentic AI → Claude Code
Est. 6 hours

PostgreSQL Database Administrator — 4 steps
SQL Introduction → PostgreSQL Fundamentals → Professional → Specialist
Est. 5 hours

Each path is designed to take you from beginner to verified professional in a specific domain.

 The Stacking Strategy

Here's what works well for most engineers:

Year 1 — Build your foundation
Pick one career path aligned with your current role. Complete it from Introduction to Professional level. This takes 6-12 hours of assessments spread over a few weeks.

Year 2 — Specialize
Add Specialist-level certifications in your area of focus. If you're a DevOps engineer, maybe it's Kubernetes Security. If you're a database admin, maybe it's PostgreSQL Performance.

Year 3 — Diversify
Add adjacent skills. A DevOps engineer picks up AI & LLM fundamentals. A cloud architect adds observability tools. This is where you differentiate yourself from the crowd.

By year 3, you've built a credential stack that tells a clear story about your expertise — and each certification in that stack is verifiable.

Specialist Badges — The Bonus Payoff

TrueCert automatically awards Specialist Badges when you complete specific combinations of certifications. Examples:

Infrastructure Specialist — Linux + Terraform + Linux Pro + Terraform Pro + Terraform Specialist

AWS Specialist — AWS Fundamentals + AWS Pro + AWS Specialist

Kubernetes Specialist — Kubernetes Fundamentals + Kubernetes Admin + Kubernetes Security

AI Specialist — AI Fundamentals + Prompt Engineering + Agentic AI

These badges appear on your public profile and tell hiring managers at a glance what you actually know.

 The Practical Approach

Not sure which path fits your goals? Here's a simple framework:

What role do you want in 12 months? Write it down.

What technologies does that role require? Check 5 job postings on LinkedIn.

Which career path on TrueCert matches those technologies? Browse truecert.co/paths/.

Start with the free Introduction assessment. See how far you are.

If the career path feels like the right fit, commit to it. If you're just filling a gap, stick with single certifications.

 The Bottom Line

Single certifications prove specific skills. Career paths prove trajectory.

Both have their place. Neither is wrong. The right choice depends on where you are in your career and where you want to go next.

Start with the free Kubernetes Introduction, AWS Cloud Introduction, or Terraform Introduction — then decide if you want to go deeper.

Browse all career paths: truecert.co/paths/

Need help choosing? Browse our Best DevOps Certifications and Best Cloud
Certifications comparisons.

Why Proctored Exams Aren't the Only Way to Prove Skills

 The Proctored Exam Monopoly

For decades, the certification industry has been built on a single model: proctored, scheduled, expensive exams.

You pay $150-$500. You wait weeks for a slot. You drive to a testing center or install surveillance software on your computer. You sweat through 2-3 hours with a camera watching your every move. Then you wait days for results.

This model exists for a reason — to prevent cheating and maintain credibility. But it also creates massive friction for everyone else.

 What Proctored Exams Actually Prove

Here's the uncomfortable truth: passing a proctored exam doesn't prove you can do the job. It proves you can pass the exam.

Plenty of engineers pass CKA, AWS SAA, or HashiCorp Terraform Associate by memorizing question banks and study guides. The exam verifies memorization under pressure, not real-world application.

What matters to employers is whether you can actually use the tools — not whether you can recall trivia from a study book.

 The Skills Verification Model

TrueCert takes a different approach: timed, randomized, scenario-based assessments that test applied knowledge.

How it works:

Questions are pulled randomly from a large question bank — you never see the same set twice

Time pressure prevents lookups and memorization

Scenarios test applied knowledge, not definitions

Results are instant

Each attempt is logged and verifiable

Why it works for employers:

Verification tokens link to specific assessment attempts

Employers can check credentials via API in real time

The randomized format makes answer-sharing useless

Scenario questions mirror real-world tasks

 Doesn't Timed Verification Allow Cheating?

This is the main objection. Let's address it honestly.

Yes, someone could theoretically have a friend take the exam for them. But:

The same is true for remote-proctored exams — people hire test-takers despite cameras

The verification token ties the credential to an account, not just a name

Employers can ask candidates to log into their TrueCert dashboard during interviews — instant proof of ownership

For teams that need stricter verification, TrueCert offers organization-managed invite-only assessments

The real question isn't "can this be gamed" — every system can be gamed. The question is "is it good enough to be useful?"

When Proctored Exams Still Make Sense

We're not saying proctored exams are worthless. They absolutely have a place:

Government and regulated industries — where compliance requires formal proctoring

Senior leadership roles — where a $300 CKA or AWS SAP signals investment

Career pivots — where a recognized brand name on your resume opens doors

Employer reimbursement — if your company is paying, take the official exam

But for 90% of day-to-day skill verification — showing a hiring manager you actually know Terraform, proving to a team lead that you understand Kubernetes networking, demonstrating AWS proficiency during a technical screen — a timed skills assessment is faster, cheaper, and just as valid.

 The Future of Certification

The certification industry is slowly catching up. Credly, Badgr, and Open Badges 2.0 have created an ecosystem where credentials can be verified by anyone, anywhere. Proctored exams are no longer the only way to earn recognized credentials.

At TrueCert, every certificate:

Is Open Badges 2.0 compliant

Has a unique verification token

Can be checked via public API

Can be added to LinkedIn with one click

Links back to the cert holder's account for additional verification

That's more transparency than most proctored certs offer.

 The Bottom Line

Proctored exams are one tool in the toolbox. They're not the only tool, and they're not always the right one.

If you want to verify your skills quickly, cheaply, and honestly — try a TrueCert assessment. Start with any free Introduction assessment. Ten minutes, zero risk, instant feedback.

If you pass, you'll know you're ready for the official exam. If you don't, you'll know exactly what to study.

Either way, you learn something. That's the point.

AWS Certification in 2026 — The Complete Guide

 The AWS Certification Maze

AWS offers 12 official certifications across 4 levels. Each costs between $100 and $300. Each requires scheduled proctored exams. And each requires significant study time.

If you're just trying to prove you know AWS, that's a lot of friction. Here's how the landscape actually breaks down — and where TrueCert fits in.

 The Official AWS Certification Path

 Foundational Level

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02)

$100, 90 minutes, 65 questions

Entry-level, tests cloud concepts and AWS basics

No prerequisites

Best for: managers, sales, or technical staff new to AWS

 Associate Level

AWS Certified Solutions Architect — Associate (SAA-C03)

 AWS Certification Cost Breakdown

Here's what every AWS certification actually costs in 2026:

DevOps Engineer Professional (DOP-C02)

$300

Professional

Security Specialty

$300

Specialty

Networking Specialty

$300

Specialty

Machine Learning Specialty

$300

Specialty

Data Analytics Specialty

$300

Specialty

Database Specialty

$300

Specialty

SAP on AWS Specialty

$300

Specialty

Total for all 12: $2,800

 Hidden costs most people forget

The exam fee is just the starting point. Most candidates also pay for:

Study courses — A Cloud Guru ($35/mo), Stephane Maarek on Udemy ($15–$50), or Adrian Cantrill ($40/course). Budget 2–3 months of study per exam.

Practice exams — $15–$30 from Tutorials Dojo or WhizLabs

Retake fees — fail and you pay the full exam fee again (no free retakes)

AWS account usage — hands-on practice can incur charges if you forget to clean up resources

Realistic cost per certification: $200–$400 when you include study materials and the risk of a retake.

 How TrueCert compares on cost

AWS Official (1 cert)

TrueCert (full track)

Exam fee

$100–$300

Free – $44.99/level

Study materials

$50–$150

Not needed

Practice exams

$15–$30

Not needed

Retake cost

Full fee again

Free (7-day cooldown)

Realistic total

$200–$400

$0–$89.97

Levels covered

1

4 (Intro through Specialist)

 TrueCert's AWS Track

TrueCert offers a simpler progression:

Level

Certification

Time

Price

Introduction

AWS Cloud Introduction

10 min

Free

Fundamentals

AWS Fundamentals

30 min

$14.99

Professional

AWS Professional — Associate Cloud Engineer

50 min

$29.99

Specialist

AWS Specialist

60 min

$44.99

Each level covers the same core topics as AWS's official exams — just verified faster and cheaper.

 Which Path Should You Choose?

 Choose Official AWS Certification if:

Your employer specifically requires AWS badges on your LinkedIn

You're preparing for a role change and need recognized credentials

You want the AWS brand on your resume

 Choose TrueCert if:

You want to verify your skills quickly and cheaply

You need proof of capability without the $150-300 price tag

You're early in your AWS journey and want to know where you stand

You want to use it as prep — pass TrueCert first, then invest in official AWS when you're confident

 The Realistic Approach

Here's what most engineers actually do:

Take the free AWS Cloud Introduction — 10 minutes, zero risk, instant feedback

Work through Fundamentals and Professional — builds confidence, identifies gaps

Study for SAA-C03 — using your TrueCert results as a starting point

Book the official exam — when you're already passing practice assessments comfortably

This approach saves money (TrueCert Fundamentals + Professional = $44.99 vs $150 for official SAA) and gives you instant feedback along the way.

 The Bottom Line

Official AWS certifications are the gold standard for recognition. But they're expensive, scheduled, and slow to get results.

TrueCert lets you verify your AWS knowledge in under an hour, for a fraction of the cost, with instant results. Use it to prove what you know, or as a stepping stone to the official certs.

Start with the free AWS Cloud Introduction and see where you stand.

The Kubernetes Certification Landscape in 2026

Kubernetes is the standard for container orchestration. If you work in DevOps, platform engineering, or cloud infrastructure, proving your Kubernetes skills is no longer optional — it's expected.

But the certification landscape is fragmented. There are multiple options at different price points, difficulty levels, and formats. This guide breaks down the major options so you can pick the right one for your role and career goals.

 The Major Options

 CNCF / Linux Foundation Certifications

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation offers three Kubernetes certifications through the Linux Foundation:

CKA — Certified Kubernetes Administrator

Performance-based exam (hands-on in a terminal)

2 hours, 15-20 tasks

$395 (includes one free retake)

Focus: cluster setup, networking, storage, troubleshooting, RBAC

Valid for 3 years

Best for: platform engineers and cluster administrators

CKAD — Certified Kubernetes Application Developer

Performance-based exam

2 hours, 15-20 tasks

$395 (includes one free retake)

Focus: pod design, configuration, deployments, services, observability

Valid for 3 years

Best for: developers who deploy applications on Kubernetes

CKS — Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist

Performance-based exam, requires active CKA

2 hours, 15-20 tasks

$395 (includes one free retake)

Focus: supply chain security, runtime security, network policies, compliance

Valid for 2 years

Best for: security engineers and senior platform engineers

 TrueCert Kubernetes Track

TrueCert offers a progressive certification path from beginner to specialist:

 Which Should You Choose?

 Choose CKA if...

You need a credential specifically recognized by employers who require CNCF certifications

You're comfortable with a $395 investment

You want a hands-on exam that proves you can operate a cluster under pressure

You're targeting roles at companies that explicitly list CKA as a requirement

 Choose CKAD if...

You're a developer who deploys to Kubernetes but doesn't manage clusters

You want to prove application-level skills (pods, deployments, services, probes)

Your role is more "deploy and observe" than "install and troubleshoot"

 Choose CKS if...

You already hold a CKA

You specialize in security or compliance

You work on multi-tenant clusters or handle sensitive workloads

 Choose TrueCert if...

You want to verify your skills quickly without a $395 commitment

You're building a progressive credential from fundamentals to specialist

You want instant results and the ability to start right now

You're early in your career and want to prove basics before investing in CKA

You want a stepping stone — use TrueCert to identify gaps, then decide if CKA is worth it

 The Practical Approach

Here's what we'd recommend for most engineers:

Step 1: Take the free Kubernetes Introduction on TrueCert. 10 minutes, zero risk. See where you stand.

Step 2: If you pass, work through Kubernetes Fundamentals and Kubernetes

Administrator. These test the same concepts as CKA — workloads, networking, storage, RBAC, troubleshooting — in a fraction of the time and cost.

Step 3: If your employer requires CKA specifically, go for it. You'll be better prepared because you've already validated your knowledge. If they don't require it specifically, TrueCert's verifiable certificates serve the same purpose at a fraction of the cost.

Step 4: For security specialization, TrueCert's Kubernetes Security Specialist covers RBAC, network policies, pod security standards, OPA/Gatekeeper, runtime security, and supply chain security — the same topics as CKS.

 The Bottom Line

CKA/CKAD/CKS are the gold standard if your employer requires them. They're rigorous, hands-on, and widely recognized.

But at $395 each with scheduled exams and 24-hour result wait times, they're not the right starting point for everyone. TrueCert lets you verify your skills instantly, identify your gaps, and build credentials progressively — starting for free.

They're not competitors. They're complementary. Start with TrueCert to prove what you know, then invest in CKA when you're confident you'll pass.

Start now: Free Kubernetes Introduction or browse the full Kubernetes Engineer career path.

 Where Do You Actually Stand?

Every DevOps engineer thinks they know their tools. But when was the last time you tested that assumption?

Maybe you've been writing Terraform configs for three years but never touched
moved
blocks or
import
. Maybe you use Docker daily but couldn't explain multi-stage build cache optimization under pressure. Maybe you manage Kubernetes clusters but haven't kept up with Pod Security Standards replacing PodSecurityPolicy.

Skills drift. Tools evolve. The gap between what you think you know and what you actually know grows quietly.

 Free Assessments — No Excuses

TrueCert offers free Introduction-level assessments across all major DevOps technologies. Each one takes 10 minutes, covers the fundamentals, and gives you an instant score.

Free account, no credit card. Just 10 questions and an honest answer about where you stand.

 What Happens After

If you pass (65% or higher):

You get a verifiable certificate — yes, even for the free assessment

You unlock a discount code for the next level (Fundamentals)

You can add the credential to LinkedIn with one click

If you don't pass:

You see which topics you got wrong (without revealing answers)

You can retry after a 24-hour cooldown

You know exactly what to study

Either way, you learn something. That's the point.

 The DevOps Career Path

The free assessments are the entry point to structured career paths. Here's how the DevOps Engineer path works:

Step 1 — Introduction (Free)

Take the free assessments in Linux, Docker, Terraform, and Kubernetes. Prove you understand the basics.

Step 2 — Fundamentals ($14.99 each)

20-25 questions, 30 minutes. Tests applied knowledge — not just definitions, but how to use the tools in real scenarios.

Step 3 — Professional ($29.99 each)

25 questions, 50 minutes. Scenario-based questions that test intermediate skills used in production environments.

Step 4 — Specialist ($44.99 each)

Advanced assessments for engineers who architect and troubleshoot complex systems.

Each level builds on the previous one. You can stop at any level — every certification stands on its own.

Why Not Just Use Certification Prep Courses?

Because you might not need one.

If you've been working with Terraform for two years, you don't need a 40-hour course. You need a 30-minute assessment that confirms what you already know — and identifies the 10% you've been guessing about.

TrueCert tests skills, not study habits. The questions are randomized from a large question bank, timed to prevent lookups, and weighted by difficulty. You either know it or you don't.

 Start Now

Pick one. Take 10 minutes. See where you stand.

Linux Introduction — the foundation of everything

Docker Introduction — containerization basics

Terraform Introduction — infrastructure as code

Kubernetes Introduction — container orchestration

AWS Cloud Introduction — cloud fundamentals

Or browse all free assessments and pick the one most relevant to your work.

Not sure which certification path to take? Check our Best DevOps Certifications in 2026 guide.

 Why Terraform Certification Matters

Infrastructure as Code is no longer optional. It's how modern teams manage cloud resources, and Terraform is the dominant tool — used by over 80% of organizations adopting IaC.

But here's the problem: everyone lists Terraform on their resume. How do you prove you actually know it?

A verified certification cuts through the noise. It tells hiring managers and recruiters that your skills have been tested, not just claimed.

 What Terraform Certifications Exist?

There are two main paths:

 HashiCorp's Official Certification

HashiCorp offers the Terraform Associate exam — a 60-minute, multiple-choice test covering IaC concepts, CLI workflow, state management, modules, and Terraform Cloud. It costs $70.50 and requires scheduling through PSI. The certification is valid for two years.

Best for: People who specifically want the HashiCorp brand on their credential.

 TrueCert's Terraform Track

TrueCert offers a progressive Terraform certification path with four levels:

Level

Certification

Questions

Time

Price

Introduction

Terraform Introduction

10

10 min

Free

Fundamentals

Terraform Fundamentals

20

30 min

$14.99

Professional

Terraform Professional

25

50 min

$29.99

Specialist

Terraform Specialist

25

55 min

$44.99

Each level builds on the previous one, covering increasingly advanced topics from basic HCL syntax all the way to large-scale architecture, CI/CD integration, and policy-as-code with Sentinel.

Best for: People who want to verify their skills quickly, at the right level, with an instantly verifiable credential.

 What's Actually Tested?

Whether you choose HashiCorp or TrueCert, the core topics are similar:

HCL syntax and configuration — resources, variables, outputs, locals

CLI workflow — init, plan, apply, destroy

State management — backends, locking, import, state manipulation

Modules — structure, sources, versioning, registry

Providers — configuration, versioning, multiple providers

Expressions and functions — for_each, count, dynamic blocks, built-in functions

At higher levels (Professional/Specialist), expect questions on:

Remote backends and Terraform Cloud workspaces

Sentinel policies and governance

Testing strategies (Terratest, terraform test)

CI/CD pipeline integration

Multi-environment and multi-region patterns

State refactoring and infrastructure evolution

 How to Prepare

Here's the honest truth: if you use Terraform daily, you probably don't need a course. You need to verify what you already know.

 If You're a Beginner

Start with the free Terraform Introduction assessment. It takes 10 minutes and covers the basics. If you pass, you're ready to study for Fundamentals.

Key resources:

HashiCorp's official Terraform tutorials

Build something real — deploy a VPC with subnets, security groups, and an EC2 instance

 If You're Intermediate

Go straight to the Terraform Fundamentals or Professional assessment. The questions test applied knowledge, not memorization — if you can write Terraform configs from memory, you'll do well.

Focus areas:

State operations (terraform state mv, import, taint/untaint)

Module patterns (when to use count vs for_each)

Lifecycle rules and their real-world applications

Workspace strategies for multi-environment setups

 If You're Advanced

The Terraform Specialist certification tests architecture-level decisions — CI/CD integration, policy-as-code, testing strategies, and managing Terraform at scale across teams.

 TrueCert vs HashiCorp: Quick Comparison

HashiCorp Associate

TrueCert Track

Cost

$70.50

Free — $44.99 per level

Time

60 min (scheduled)

10-55 min (on demand)

Levels

1

4 (Introduction to Specialist)

Proctored

Yes (PSI)

Timed, randomized questions

Valid for

2 years

Verifiable via token

Results

Days

Instant

Retake

After waiting period

7-day cooldown

They're complementary, not competing. Many professionals hold both.

 Getting Started

The fastest way to find out where you stand:

Take the free Terraform Introduction — 10 questions, 10 minutes, free account

If you pass, you'll get a discount code for the next level

Work your way up through Fundamentals, Professional, and Specialist as your skills grow

Each certification earns you a verifiable digital credential you can add to LinkedIn with one click.

No courses required. No scheduling. Just prove what you know.

Ready to get started? Browse all Terraform certifications or take the free introduction assessment.

Terraform is just one piece of the puzzle. See the full Best DevOps Certifications in 2026 guide.
