      <title>Property type coercion in Angular using decorators</title>

  What are decorators?
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;JavaScript decorators are functions that alter the default behavior of classes, methods and properties. Like in other programming languages such as Java, C# and Python, we can use them to transparently enhance different aspects of our code. Web UI frameworks like Angular, Lit and Aurelia use them as the building blocks of their component models. Node.js frameworks and libraries such as NestJS, sequelize-typescript and TypeORM also provide decorators to make their APIs more expressive. A great example of spot-on decorator usage is a database entity declaration in TypeORM:&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The &lt;code&gt;Entity&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;PrimaryGeneratedColumn&lt;/code&gt; and &lt;code&gt;Column&lt;/code&gt; decorators transform the plain JavaScript class into an entity mapped to a database table with specific column characteristics. What's most impressive is we achieve all this with no procedural code at all. The table definition is declarative which makes it pleasant to read and easy to understand. All the complicated procedural instructions are inside the decorator functions themselves, hidden from our eyes. Decorators designed with care and thought can create as elegant APIs as the one shown above.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;While no JavaScript runtime supports decorators natively yet, there are implementations which use transpilation to achieve the same results. The most used ones are &lt;a href="https://babeljs.io/docs/en/babel-plugin-proposal-decorators"&gt;@babel/plugin-proposal-decorators&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="https://www.typescriptlang.org/docs/handbook/decorators.html"&gt;TypeScript's experimental decorators&lt;/a&gt;. At the end of March 2022 the decorators proposal reached stage 3 so we can expect them to become an official part of the ECMAScript specification pretty soon. I believe decorators are worth exploring in their current state, even if they end up being slightly different than the Babel/TypeScript implementations. In the worst case scenario we can keep using the polyfills while waiting for the JavaScript community to define migration strategies.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In this article I will show you how to use decorators in TypeScript since the &lt;code&gt;experimentalDecorators&lt;/code&gt; compiler flag is active by default for all Angular projects.&lt;/p&gt;

  Why do we need type coercion in Angular components?
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;You've probably heard &lt;a href="https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary/Type_coercion"&gt;"type coercion"&lt;/a&gt; mentioned in the context of the JavaScript engine making implicit data type conversions:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This automatic transformation from one type into another causes headaches to many inexperienced developers. Those who consider themselves experienced will tell you to avoid implicit type conversions at any cost. I'd say you should learn how it works and use that knowledge to your advantage. Let's see how can we apply type coercion for Angular component input properties.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Imagine we have the following Angular component which renders a number with two buttons that can either decrement or increment it.&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The template looks familiar to all developers with an Angular background, but sometimes we might have team members that are proficient with vanilla HTML or Web Components instead. Imagine we are developing the components of our company's design system in Angular but teammates from product development work primarily with Web Components. Now upper management has tasked them with urgently building the prototype for a new product. In such situations we might want a more flexible and forgiving API that mimics how native HTML and Web Components work:&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This API hides the complexities related to the Angular-specific property binding syntax and everything will work intuitively for our teammates. We as component authors won't have to babysit the product developers and they will feel empowered by the similarities with what they already know well.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;However, we can't do that with the current state of our component. We can get either of two disappointing results depending on our project setup:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt;We will receive strings for &lt;code&gt;count&lt;/code&gt; and &lt;code&gt;disabled&lt;/code&gt; instead of number and boolean respectively. This can cause hard to diagnose bugs and unexpected component behavior.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Our code won't compile if we have the &lt;code&gt;strictTemplates&lt;/code&gt; compiler flag turned on. The compiler will complain that we aren't passing the expected types to our component inputs.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Neither of these is something we desire. We want everything to &lt;em&gt;just work™&lt;/em&gt;. This problem is so common that the Angular team included a default solution for it in its CDK (component development kit). We can import the &lt;code&gt;@angular/cdk/coercion&lt;/code&gt; package to use different coercion related utility functions in our code. This approach comes with some caveats on its own:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;we must turn the simple public properties to a getter/setter pair with a private field backing each;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;if we are using strict templates, we must declare the accepted input type separately to let the compiler know we use different input and internal types;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Notice the use of &lt;code&gt;this&lt;/code&gt; in the getter and setter - in this case it refers to the current component's instance. It's tempting to use &lt;code&gt;target&lt;/code&gt; here, but that would be a mistake since &lt;code&gt;target&lt;/code&gt; is actually the component's prototype. In other words, in the context of the &lt;code&gt;get()&lt;/code&gt; function, &lt;code&gt;Object.getPrototypeOf(this) === target&lt;/code&gt; will evaluate to &lt;code&gt;true&lt;/code&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We can use decorators to reduce code duplication and enhance our Angular components with useful behaviors. Decorators can both improve the developer experience and the correctness of our components' business logic. All these benefits come in the form of declarative expressions that don't add much noise and complexity to our codebase.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Due to the intricacies of the Angular runtime, its template compiler, TypeScript, and the tight integration between all these, metaprogramming in this environment might require resorting to ugly hacks and workarounds. That's why the UI engineer should always keep the right balance between developer experience, code quality and functionality.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The story UI renders a boolean control knob for the &lt;code&gt;checked&lt;/code&gt; &lt;code&gt;@Input&lt;/code&gt; property of the component but we can't change the label yet. It's passed to the template as projected content and that requires special handling on our side.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A quick note: we are using the new Storybook story format CSF 3 in the examples since CSF 2 is going to be deprecated in Storybook 7.0 (the next major version at the time of writing). The main difference is that the story configuration is an object (&lt;code&gt;StoryObj&lt;/code&gt;) instead of a function (&lt;code&gt;Story&lt;/code&gt;/&lt;code&gt;StoryFn&lt;/code&gt;). This makes creating and combining stories way easier. You can read more about the new format &lt;a href="https://storybook.js.org/blog/component-story-format-3-0/"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;. We can achieve the same result demonstrated in the article with CSF 2 as well, so don't get discouraged if you're using that format in your existing project.&lt;/p&gt;

  Make the story support projected content

&lt;p&gt;By default Storybook automatically maps the current values of the control knobs to the displayed component's properties. This works for the trivial cases where we don't use &lt;code&gt;ng-content&lt;/code&gt; and we have all control knobs named the same way as our component's properties. To allow content projection for our checkbox, we must go a step further and manually render an Angular template in our story. This will offer us more flexibility in regard how Storybook's UI manipulates our component but will also mean we have to take care of some new caveats.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Let's update the story by adding - our own &lt;code&gt;render&lt;/code&gt; method and a control knob (text field) for changing the checkbox label:&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The first change is the addition of a new custom type called &lt;code&gt;StoryType&lt;/code&gt; which appends the &lt;code&gt;label&lt;/code&gt; string field to the &lt;code&gt;EvilCorpCheckboxComponent&lt;/code&gt; interface. We also use that new type as the generic argument for the &lt;code&gt;Meta&lt;/code&gt; and &lt;code&gt;StoryObj&lt;/code&gt; interfaces. This trick is useful when we have more Storybook UI controls than a component's &lt;code&gt;@Input&lt;/code&gt; properties. In this case, the &lt;code&gt;label&lt;/code&gt; is not part of the Angular component's interface but still we want to edit it via the Storybook control knobs.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We've also added the &lt;code&gt;label&lt;/code&gt; property to the &lt;code&gt;argTypes&lt;/code&gt; and &lt;code&gt;args&lt;/code&gt; metadata fields. This allows us to edit the label's value and the component will automatically update itself with the current one.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The most notable change is the &lt;code&gt;render&lt;/code&gt; method added to the default export of type &lt;code&gt;Meta&lt;/code&gt;. It takes the values from the Storybook control knobs as a parameter and allows us to dynamically build a story metadata object. With these new powers we can render an Angular template that receives all its properties from the Storybook knobs. One gotcha is that we must provide all component &lt;code&gt;@Input&lt;/code&gt;s by hand. Storybook magically took care of this before, but now that we've requested complete control over the rendering, we have to do it by ourselves. The &lt;code&gt;template&lt;/code&gt; field contains an Angular template string which evaluates each time the function's arguments change. The &lt;code&gt;props&lt;/code&gt; field in the return value of the &lt;code&gt;render&lt;/code&gt; function binds its contents to the template's variables, for example:&lt;br&gt;
