Quickly edit database from an iPhone

TablePlus iOS makes it easy to manage your database from a device as small as an iPhone.

If you haven’t installed TablePlus iOS on your iPhone, get it here.

The following guide was demonstrated on an iPhone 6 (4.7 inches).

 1. Inline edit

TablePlus open a database in a spreadsheet-like view. On a small screen like this one, you can save more screen space by hiding the left sidebar when you don’t need it. Simply drag its borderline to the left side.

With the table view, you can select and edit any data cell directly with a double-tap.

If the value is long and you need more space to work on it, you can use the text editor instead. To use the text editor:

Tap and hold on the data cell you need

Select Text Editor from the popup menu

Edit the long value in a bigger text editing view

Tap outside of the editor to close it

 2. Right sidebar

When you have a table with many columns, this right sidebar will help you view and edit a specific record easily and you will not mistake it for another row while scrolling. To use it, drag in the borderline on the right of the data table, then drag it out when you don’t need it anymore.

 3. Advanced data filters

To quickly filter out the records you want to see, use this. By default, the filter is hidden above the data table and to use it, you just need to drag the upper borderline down.

 4. Code review

The main concern for working on a small screen is that we might accidentally make a change, like a delete action, without knowing it. Then when we figure it out, it might be too late. TablePlus has an editing mode that is both convenient and safe to use. The change you have made will be pending, you can either review it first, choose to commit to the server or cancel it.

Furthermore, you can undo and redo all those changes easily using the classic combination of Cmd + Z, or holding the title bar and select Undo, everything is always under control.

 5. Multiple tabs and multiple workspaces

When you work with multiple databases at the same time, it’s easy to open another table, or switch to another connection and have them active at the same time.

Install PostgreSQL Server on Mac in 1 minute

To install PostgreSQL on Mac, the two most common ways are Docker and Homebrew service. But Docker might be too big and eat up a large portion of memory, or sometimes you feel clumsy configuring the local server using the command line.

On the other hand, it's really hard to install and manage multiple versions of PostgreSQL on your computer.

In this post, we are going to use DBngin, a free tool for database version management on Mac.

DBngin is a user-friendly Mac app designed to help you deploy multiple database management systems including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis of various versions on your Mac within a click.

Moreover, DBngin will automatically create a new database cluster and a database which can be managed via a simple server controller.

First, go to DBngin, download and install the app on your Mac.

Open DBngin and click on + New Server button.

Choose PostgreSQL from the drivers' list, choose the PostgreSQL version and name your server to create a new server. You can edit the server and change the port later on.

Now you already have a local PostgreSQL server running on your computer.

With DBngin, you can install and manage multiple servers of not only PostgreSQL but MySQL, Redis. You can turn on and off any database server by a click. Turn it on when you need and quit when you're done. No dependencies.

11 tips to boost your productivity with TablePlus

TablePlus is a modern, native client with intuitive GUI tools to create, access, query & edit multiple relational databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon Redshift, MariaDB, CockroachDB, Vertica, and Redis.

Download the app from the official website.

 1. Import URL

While creating a connection to the databases, if remembering username and password is a hassle for you, try this feature from TablePlus. Choose the driver, then copy and paste the database URL to import. Done!

 2. Open Anything

You can expect this feature to run as the Search Spotlight on Mac. TablePlus will search for databases, tables, views, snaps, functions. To open an item from the result list, double-click on the item or use the up arrow and down arrow key to select the item then hit enter.

 3. Favorite

You can quickly see the queries that you use frequently by adding them as the favorite, so you can get them with a click. You can see all your favorite queries from the Favorite tab in the left sidebar.
To add a query to favorite, select the query from the editor, right click then add to favorite.

 4. Inline edit

With the spreadsheet-like view, you can easily modify data using inline editing feature. The most common way is to double-click on the cell and hit enter once the edit is completed. Don’t forget to hit cmd + S to commit the change to the server.

 5. Filter

The filter can be used to narrow down the data in your table. It will display only the certain rows that meet the criteria that you specify and hide the unwanted parts of it from the current view. You can use multiple filters all at once.

 6. Show selected column

If data filter feature is to display a certain number of rows, this feature is to show a certain number of columns from the table and hide the rest.

 7. Multi-tabs - multiwindows

The chances are, you’ll be working with a lot of connections/databases/tables at the same time. So this feature will help you navigate faster without having to switch back and forth between them.

 8. Code review

Afraid that you made a mistake accidentally? Code review will take care of it. Code review will log all the changes that you made and show them to you then you can make the decision whether to commit the changes to the server or discard them.

 9. Split tab

There are two approaches to this. Either you can split query editor into two screens to write and run queries separately or you can write multiple queries on the same screen then split the results into different tabs. This can be really easy to compare the results placed next to each other.

 10. Shortcut keys

Shortcut keys save tons of time. Period. Every functionality in TablePlus is assigned to a shortcut key so that you can get things done much faster. Learn more about the shortcut key here

 11. Dark theme

If you are like most developers, working with a dark theme would help you be more focused and boost your productivity. You can enable the dark theme from the app’s preference. This feature is only available for the registered account only.

TablePlus helps you to be more efficient while working with multiple relational databases. You can connect to the server, create a new database, manipulate and save your data at a lightning speed, high-end secure guaranteed.

For now, TablePlus is available for macOS only, the windows version is going to be out soon.

Download the app from TablePlus' official website.

 Basic features

 Connect to the server

You can use TablePlus to create a connection to multiple databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon Redshift, MariaDB, CockroachDB, Vertica, and even Redis.
You need to prepare host, port, username, and password to connect. For SQLite, you can double click on the database file (normally it has
.db
,
.sqlite
, or
.sqlite3
file extension) to open with TablePlus.

You can also import URL, just copy and paste, it saves tons of times for you.

 Open anything

Hit Cmd + P and type the keyword, TablePlus will lookup from your database and open table, views, function, or snap, very convenient.

 Edit Data

TablePlus has a spreadsheet-like interface for you to browse and edit data inline in the most intuitive way.

Remember to hit cmd + S to commit the change to the server after to edit.

 SQL Query editor

To open the SQL editor, hit cmd + E.
You can write multiple queries and choose to run them simultaneously or only the query at the cursor. If you choose to run all, the results can be split and displayed in multiples tabs.

 Create new tables

Instead of running queries, you can create a new table from the GUI tool. Open the database and click on + new table button, just as easy as you create a new folder in macOS’ Finder.

 Data Filter

Use this feature to quickly filter out the records you want to see. You can apply multiple filters at once, each filter contains three parts:

a dropdown list of the column names

common conditions such as equal, contain, IS NULL,…

one text box to fill the value.

 Export/Import Data

You can import a table from a CSV file and export a table from your database to a CSV, JSON or SQL file.
