      <title>Why Your WPM Plateaus (And What Actually Breaks It)</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;Every typist hits the same wall. You go from 40 to 55 WPM in a few weeks of casual practice, then you stall. You keep typing every day, the number doesn't move, and the internet's advice ("just practice more") stops working. Here's why, and what actually breaks the plateau.&lt;/p&gt;

  The plateau isn't about speed. It's about error recovery.
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;When people say they're "stuck," they usually mean their peak speed hasn't moved. But peak speed was never the bottleneck - it's how fast you recover from a miss that determines your average.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Watch a 40 WPM typist and an 80 WPM typist type the same paragraph. Their peak keystroke speed in a clean run is often closer than you'd expect. The real gap is what happens after an error: the 40 WPM typist pauses, looks at the screen, backspaces, and restarts the word. The 80 WPM typist's fingers keep moving almost without a break. That pause-and-correct cycle costs 300-800ms per mistake, and at 3-5 mistakes per 100 words, that's the entire gap.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If you're plateaued, your first diagnostic question shouldn't be "how do I type faster" - it should be "how long does it take me to recover from an error." That's a trainable skill, and it's almost never the thing people practice.&lt;/p&gt;

  Chunking: why word-level typing is a ceiling
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Beginners type letter by letter. Intermediate typists type word by word - they see "the," commit to the pattern, and their fingers execute it as one motion rather than three keystrokes. This is chunking, and it's the single biggest jump in typing ability.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But there's a second, much less talked-about level: phrase chunking. Fast typists don't just recognize "the" as a unit - they recognize "in the middle of" or "as soon as possible" as units, because those phrases repeat constantly in natural language. If you're stuck around 60-70 WPM, you've likely maxed out word-level chunking and haven't started phrase-level chunking. The fix isn't more volume at the same difficulty - it's practicing with longer, more natural prose (not random word lists) so your brain has real phrase patterns to compress.&lt;/p&gt;

  Finger independence, not "typing more"
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A huge amount of wasted practice time comes from typing volume without addressing physical constraints. If your ring and pinky fingers are weak or poorly positioned, no amount of repetition fixes that - you're just reinforcing a compensX pattern (e.g., using your middle finger to reach keys your ring finger should hit). This shows up as a hard ceiling around 70-90 WPM for a lot of typists, regardless of how much they practice, because the compensation pattern itself has a speed limit.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The fix is boring and unpopular: isolated drills that force weak fingers to do their actual job, even though they feel slower at first. It's a short-term regression for a long-term unlock.&lt;/p&gt;

  What to actually track
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If you only track WPM, you're tracking an output, not the levers that produce it. Track these instead:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;

&lt;strong&gt;Error recovery time&lt;/strong&gt; - how long between a mistake and getting back to full speed&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Consistency, not peak&lt;/strong&gt; - your average pace across a whole test matters more than your fastest 5-second burst&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Accuracy trend at your current speed&lt;/strong&gt; - if accuracy is dropping as you push speed, you're outrunning your recovery skill, not actually getting faster

This was a deliberate call: without it, a "fast and sloppy" playstyle beats "fast and clean" on pure point efficiency, which is exactly backwards from what a typing platform should reward.&lt;/p&gt;

  Floors, not just formulas
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A few flat rules sit on top of the formula:&lt;/p&gt;

Without a minimum gain, a player performing right at their tier's expected WPM earns close to nothing per match, which feels bad even when it's "correct" by the formula. Without a real abandon penalty, quitting a match you're about to lose is strictly better than finishing it - which quietly rots the whole point of ranked play.&lt;/p&gt;

  Win streaks as a soft nudge, not the core loop
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Streak bonuses (+5 at 3 wins, +10 at 5, +20 at 10) exist on top of the base formula, not instead of it. They reward consistency without becoming the dominant scoring mechanism - the core formula still does the actual work of separating skill levels; streaks just make a good session feel a little better than the raw math alone would.&lt;/p&gt;

  Where this leaves the tier curve
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Tiers scale from Rookie (5–15 WPM) up through Mythical (151+ WPM) across eleven bands, each with its own expected-WPM window. The scaling isn't linear - the WPM range widens at the top (Godlike, Transcendent, and Mythical span much wider bands than the early tiers) because the population of players thins out fast at high speeds, and a tight band up there would mean too few matches landing in-range to feel meaningful.&lt;/p&gt;
