After food, shelter, and clothing, the basic need of the 21st century is the internet. Nowadays, we use smartphones, smartwatches, smart speakers and more, the internet has become the part of devices of our daily life. In the future, internet access will also be measured like fuel efficiency and engine power.

IoT (Internet Of Things) is the fastest growing technology which integrates the internet to the device or equipment to make life easier.
For example, If your AC at home is connected to the internet, you can operate it from anywhere with your smartphone instead of remote control.
This was just a glance at how the internet is important to us. Here, we will discuss one of the emerging technology connected to the internet which is Connected Cars.

Understand Connected Cars
A device in an automobile which connects to different devices with each other in the vehicle or other devices, networks or services in other cars, home or offices is known as connected cars.

As per experts, these cars are an emerging idea in IoT which means it has an internet connection and is mostly equipped with wireless LAN. It can process its performance and service along with ensuring passenger’s comfort using sensors and the internet.

These cars track fleet mileage and fuel usage along with other important data. It provides the driver with shorter routes and details regarding driving behaviour.

Back to History
The idea for the Connected Car was brought in the market by General Motors in 1996 with OnStar. The system was designed for getting emergency help during accidents. A call was delivered to call center for the driver’s help.

It was first worked with voice then it added a cellular system to share GPS positioning for help. After OnStar’s success, other automakers came up with similar safety features available in the paid version after the free trial.

Then in 2001, remote diagnostics was introduced in the car. In 2003, the introduction of vehicle reports, route navigation, and network access device was considered to be a great change. Then in 2007, Continental introduced data-only telematics which used to collect data from the car for the user. Afterwards, in 2014, Audi A3 offered 4G LTE WIFI Hotspot access and became the first to do so. Then General Motors became the first mass deployment of 4G LTE.

In the UK, ‘The AA’ was the first to introduce breakdown detection in connected cars. This car was known as Car Genie which would not only generate alerts on car health issues but also directly phone calls for customer help to prevent breakdown.

A European start-up “Stratio Automotive” in 2017 provided predictive intelligence in 10,000 vehicles to enable fleet operators for better managing and maintenance of their fleet.

Segments of Connected Cars
We can further categorize Connected Cars into 8 segments, which are;

GPS also known as Global Positioning System is a satellite-based radio navigation and monitoring system developed and owned by the United States and operated under the United Air Force to carry out their military operations. But as the growth of technology and research accelerated, GPS was used for tracking vehicles and monitoring different application or objects around the world.

Overview of GPS

In 1957, first artificial Earth satellite Sputnik was launched by the scientists of the Soviet Union now known as Russia into space. Unfournetly the satellite was lost in the atmosphere within its three months of launch. But research scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology noted that the radio signal frequency transmitted through Sputnik satellite was changing based on its location.

Thus, the change in signal frequency helped the scientists to discover that location of a satellite in an orbit can be tracked from the ground surface by measuring the changes develop in the frequency of the radio signal. After that race between different nation started to develop their own GPS tracking satellites.

In 1959 first navigation Satellite Transit 1B was developed and launched by the United States. It was built to track and target ground regions which helped the US navy and military force to get an accurate position and study the momentum of submarines.

Finally, in the year, 1978 first GPS tracking satellite NAVSTAR was launched by the United States which consists constellation of 24 satellites and their ground stations. Which was later increased to 31 satellites in the year 2000. In which 27 are active satellites and rest 4 satellites are kept as a replacement if any one of the 27 satellites gets dysfunctional.

GPS Tracking Software Working

GPS tracking software makes use of 2-D trilateration and 3-D trilateration to estimate the actual position, elevation, velocity and time of an object. There are 24 satellites continuously revolving around the earth's orbit which makes use of GNSS network.
GNSS coordinates with the satellites that use microwave signals transmitted to GPS devices which gives information regarding the speed, location and time.

While tracking any object the device requires signals from at least four satellites to get an accurate location of an object. Each of this satellite is powered by solar energy which helps them to rotate around the earth orbit twice a day, which transmits signals regularly.

When a user starts using GPS in its devices. The signals from the device communicate with three satellites in a fraction of time making use of high-frequency radio signals traveling at the speed of light and receives location data from these satellites. Then the distance between the device and those three satellites are calculated. Due to the fixed orbital path of satellites and atomic clock timing the accurate location of the user is known.

Generally, to obtain an accurate location from anywhere around the globe 4 satellites come under the process in which 3 satellites play a major role in getting the location information. And the fourth satellite is used to get more improved location accuracy and altitude due to the error occurred during the measure of precise time between each signal received.

Internet of Things Vs Fleet Management!

(IoT) Internet of things is a vast environment of physical objects, device, or sensors connected with the internet. Any digital device, objects or people that have an ability to transfer data over a network medium without the need of a human to computer interaction, that can be remotely controlled and monitor.

Fleet management is an industrial technique to organize and improve the efficiency and productivity of resources and reduce the cost control over vehicles. Thus, In Fleet Management System Internet of things is considered as an ecosystem of multiple technologies used in fleets like commodity sensors, real-time activity, wireless networks, control systems, embedded systems, and machine learning.

Working Structure of IoT With Fleet Management

In early days Fleet operating companies doesn’t had much connectivity system. In spite of having devices like mobile phones and GPS sensors were not able to provide accurate data. Resulting issues like maintenance and lost control over the vehicle. But with the rise of IoT Technology offering several new tools like live vehicle streaming cameras, scheduling, Load Management, Driver Behaviour, and vehicle tracking have changed the working pattern of the fleet companies.

As mention above different IoT enables devices or objects are used in a fleet like sensors, real-time features, etc. This object transmits real-time data over an internet connected network. Then after this data are collected from individual vehicles and analyzed, helping both fleet operators and drivers.

IoT generally makes use of 3 Technolgy that underpins fleet management which are RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification), GPS (Global Positioning System), OBD I (Onboard Diagnostic) and OBD II.

RFID is used to fetch accurate and reliable information to consistently operate and manage the live behavior of the fleet. These vehicles make use of RFID tags which are hooked on fleet vehicles. Which allows detailed and automated wireless identification of these fleets.

GPS is used to obtain a real-time route map, Route Information, Weather Information over which fleet will travel its trip.

OBD device is used to monitor Vehicle behavior, create and generate multiple alert alarms, check on Fuel Consumption and Mileage analysis and detect a failure in vehicle machines.
