Project MagDrive: An open-source desktop app that encrypts and splits files across Google Drives

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share an open-source desktop tool I've been working on called MagDrive, and I’d really appreciate some community feedback, security reviews, and testing.

 What is it?

MagDrive lets you connect one or more Google Drive accounts and treats them like a secure, unified vault:

Encrypted before upload: Files are scrambled on your computer (client-side AES-256-GCM) before anything touches Google's servers, so Google cannot see your files or filenames.

File splitting & redundancy: It breaks larger files into pieces and spreads them across your connected drives using Reed-Solomon erasure coding. Even if one drive fails or gets disconnected, your files can still be recovered without losing anything.

Storage pooling: You can combine multiple free Google accounts into one bigger storage space.

Swarm Tracker support: Includes an optional zero-knowledge mirror tracker for peer discovery and package availability.

A quick note on how it was made

I’m not a veteran software engineer, so I heavily leveraged modern AI coding tools to help write and architect the codebase (Rust/Tauri v2 backend with a React UI). While I’ve thoroughly tested the core workflows myself on Windows, having more eyes on the code and real-world testing from actual users would mean the world to me.

Platform & Testing Status (Help needed!)

Windows: Tested and working on my end.

Linux & macOS: Pre-built binaries are generated automatically via GitHub Actions CI/CD (
.deb
,
.AppImage
, and
.dmg
), but I haven't been able to test them on bare-metal machines yet since I primarily develop inside WSL on Windows and don't own a Mac. If anyone on Linux or macOS can try running the binaries and report if they launch properly, that would be immensely helpful!

Windows SmartScreen warning: Because this is an independent hobby project, I don’t have a paid commercial code-signing certificate yet. Windows might display a blue "Windows protected your PC" screen—you just need to click "More info" $\to$ "Run anyway". The entire source code and build pipelines are open on GitHub for anyone to audit.

If you have a few minutes to check it out, review the repo, or test the Linux/Mac builds, I’d love to hear your thoughts, bug reports, and suggestions!

Thank you so much!
