Moreover, the multi-band absorber is insensitive to polarization and incident angles for TE and TM polarizations, and the three resonance frequencies can be reconfigured by changing the Fermi energy level of graphene. Our designed device exhibits the merits of bi-functionality and a simple configuration, which is very attractive for potential terahertz applications such as intelligent attenuators, reflectors, and spatial modulators.Maxwellian view systems can be employed to circumvent the vergence-accommodation conflict in near-eye displays (NEDs), which directly project images onto the retina regardless of the human eye's depth of focus. However, Maxwellian view optics typically have a limited eyebox, which prevents broader applications of this architecture in NEDs. Here, we demonstrate a thin-film two-dimensional beam deflector composed of multi-twist broad-band Pancharatnam-Berry deflectors to mitigate this limitation via eyebox replication. Based on experimental validation, our proposed design can display always-focused full-color images within a 9 mm × 9 mm eyebox and thus mitigate the limitation of conventional Maxwellian displays while adding negligible weight and volume. An on-chip linearization method for phase modulated microwave photonic link based on integrated ring resonators is proposed. By properly tailoring the phase and amplitude of optical carrier band and second-order sidebands, the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) components can be suppressed. this website Theoretical analysis are taken and a proof-of-concept experiment is carried out. Experimental results demonstrate that IMD3 is suppressed by 21.7 dB. When the noise of the link is properly optimized, an SFDR of 112.7 dB·Hz2/3 can be achieved. This opens the possibility of integrating linearization into a functional photonic integrated circuit.Monolayer two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have excellent optical and electrical properties and show great application potential in photodetectors. However, the thickness at the atomic scale leads to weak light absorption, which greatly limits the responsivity of corresponding photodetectors. Here we propose an all-dielectric sub-wavelength zero-contrast grating structure that enables a monolayer of MoS2 with ultra-narrow bandwidth perfect light absorption. The absorption enhancement can be attributed to the critical coupling of guided mode resonances from two specific order diffractions in the structure, as confirmed by the planar waveguide theory and coupled mode theory. Such absorption enhancement can be generalized to any other absorptive atomically thin films, and the wavelength of perfect absorption can be tuned by scaling the dimension of the photonic structure. Our results offer a promising photonic approach to realize ultra-highly sensitive narrow-band photodetectors by using atomically thin materials. We demonstrate foundry-fabricated O-band III-V-on-silicon discrete-mode lasers. The laser fabrication follows the back-side-on-buried-oxide laser integration process and is compatible with complex, multilayer, silicon-on-insulator based platforms. A series of devices were characterized, with the best devices producing on-chip powers of nearly 20 mW with Lorentzian linewidths below 20 kHz and a side mode suppression ratio of at least 60 dB.For effective photon conversion in solar-thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems, an enclosed-space confined emitter system is proposed, and its power generation potential is demonstrated. A cuboid monolithic absorber/emitter is applied for higher extraction efficiency without dead areas. An analysis using an enclosed space shows a 4.1% higher absolute system efficiency than that using a planar absorber/emitter system. In the experiment, system efficiency reaches 7.0%, which is obtained after multiplying the power measured from one cell by five. A system efficiency more than 20% is achievable by further improvement with a back surface reflecting TPV cells and a perfectly enclosed space. The minimum requirements for an optical reservoir computer, a recent paradigm for computation using simple algorithms, are nonlinearity and internal interactions. A promising optical system satisfying these requirements is a platform based on coupled degenerate optical parametric oscillators (DOPOs) in a fiber ring cavity. We can expect advantages using DOPOs for reservoir computing with respect to scalability and reduction of excess noise; however, the continuous stabilization required for reservoir computing has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we report the continuous and long-term stabilization of an optical system by introducing periodical phase modulation patterns for DOPOs and a local oscillator. We observed that the Allan variance of the optical phase up to 100 ms was suppressed and that the homodyne measurement signal had a relative standard deviation of 1.4% over 62,500 round trips. The proposed methods represent important technical bases for realizing stable computation on large-scale optical hybrid computers.Volterra equalization (VE) presents substantial performance enhancement for high-speed optical signals but suffers from high computation complexity which limits its physical implementations. To address these limitations, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an elastic net regularization-based pruned Volterra equalization (ENPVE) to reduce the computation complexity while still maintain system performance. Our proposed scheme prunes redundant weight coefficients with a three-phase configuration. Firstly, we pre-train the VE with an adaptive EN-regularizer to identify significant weights. Next, we prune the insignificant weights away. Finally, we retrain the equalizer by fine-tuning the remaining weight coefficients. Our proposed ENPVE achieves superior performance with reduced computation complexity. Compared with conventional VE and L1 regularization-based Volterra equalizer (L1VE), our approach show a complexity reduction of 97.4% and 20.2%, respectively, for an O-band 80-Gbps PAM4 signal at a received optical power of -4 dBm after 40 km SMF transmission.Enhanced manipulation and analysis of bio-particles using light confined in nano-scale dielectric structures has proceeded apace in the last several years. Small mode volumes, along with the lack of a need for bulky optical elements give advantages in sensitivity and scalability relative to conventional optical manipulation. However, manipulation of lipid vesicles (liposomes) remains difficult, particularly in the sub-micron diameter regime. Here we demonstrate the optical trapping and transport of sub-micron diameter liposomes along an optical nanofiber using the nanofiber mode's evanescent field. We find that nanofiber diameters below a nominal diffraction limit give optimal results. Our results pave the way for integrated optical transport and analysis of liposome-like bio-particles, as well as their coupling to nano-optical resonators.this website

Activated protein C (APC) resistance is a major risk factor of venous thrombosis which may be acquired by hormonal therapy or other causes. ARV-825 clinical trial The FibWave, a sensitive global clot-based assay design to analyze the coagulation kinetics in plasma, may be a good candidate to assess this prothrombotic state. This study aims to assess the suitability of the FibWave to differentiate the coagulation kinetics of women on oral contraceptives.

Fifty-four healthy volunteers were divided into 5 groups men [n=13], women not using hormonal contraception [n=12], women using second [n=12] or third generation [n=12] combined oral contraceptives, and women using progestin only contraceptive [n=5]. Patients with coagulation abnormalities were also assessed [n=8]. The APC resistance was assessed on the FibWave using exogenous APC or Protac, and on the Calibrated Automated Thrombogram using the ETP-based APC resistance assay.

Either in presence or in absence of APC or Protac, the FibWave was able to detect a hypercoagulable state in plasma samples. All combined oral contraceptives showed a lower FW-Max
, FW-Max
and FW-Min
percentage of inhibition and a lower FW-Ttpeak ratio than the other groups. The sensitivity of the FibWave was similar to the one of the ETP-based APC resistance assay.

The FibWave is able to differentiate APC resistance levels observed in women on combined oral contraceptive. The FW-Max
, FW-Max
and to a lesser degree FW-Min
were identified as the most sensitive parameters with a similar performance to the ETP-based APC resistance assay.
Oncogenic alterations of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling are frequently noted in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In recent decades, EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been developed, although the therapeutic efficacy of these inhibitor is restricted to EGFR-mutant patients. In this study, we investigated that clathrin-mediated EGFR endocytosis hampers the effects of gefitinib and sustains NSCLC cells with wild-type EGFR.

NSCLC cell lines (H358, Calu-3, SNU-1327, and H1703) were stimulated with the EGF and treated with gefitinib and endocytosis inhibitors (phenylarsine oxide (PAO) and Filipin III). Growth inhibition and apoptosis were evaluated. Immunofluorescence, immunoprecipitation, and western blot assay were performed to investigate EGFR endocytosis and determine the signaling pathway. Xenograft mouse models were used to verify the combination effect of gefitinib and PAO in vivo.

We confirmed the differences in EGFR endocytosis according to gefitinib response in wild-tbined with gefitinib could be an option in treatment of wild-type EGFR NSCLC.Atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) was identified and associated with congenital tremor (CT) type A-II in new born piglets and has been reported in many countries. In China, the first APPV identification in swine herds was reported in Guangdong province in 2016. To investigate the genetic characteristics of APPV in Guangxi province, 53 tissue samples from neonatal piglets with CT were collected and detected from October 2017 to May 2019. Five APPV strains which were named as GX04/2017, GX01-2018, GX02-2018, GX01-2019 and GX02-2019 were obtained. Sequence analysis revealed that all six APPV strains from Guangxi province, including five strains from this study and one from a previous report, shared 83.3%-97.5% nucleotide identity of complete genome and 91.7%-99.1% amino acid identity of the open reading frame (ORF), and shared 77.7%-97.7% nucleotide identity of complete genome and 90.6%-99.3% amino acid identity of ORF with reference strains. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all APPV strains could be divided into three clades based on the complete genome, Npro , Erns and E2 gene sequences, respectively; and the APPV strains from Guangxi province distributed in two clades (clades I and II). No sign of recombination was observed from Guangxi strains. Evolution analysis performed on the complete genome of 58 APPV strains showed that America, Europe and Asia strains during 2006-2019 evolved at a mean rate of 1.37 × 10-4 substitutions/site/year, and the most recent common ancestor (tMRCA) of them was estimated as 1,700.5 years ago. The findings of this study indicated that there existed a high degree of genetic diversity of APPV from Guangxi province, Southern China, which provided important information on the epidemiological features and evolutionary relationships of APPV.Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by the intracellular bacterium, Coxiella burnetii. Its primary mode of transmission is by inhalation of aerosols originating from infected animals and contaminated environments. The organism has a very low infective dose, can persist in the environment for long periods of time and large outbreaks fuelled by windborne spread have been previously reported. Detection of C. burnetii in the environment is therefore important during human and animal outbreak investigations and for the control and prevention of Q fever. This study aimed to systematically review and critically appraise the published literature on sampling methods used to detect C. burnetii from different environmental samples. A search of four electronic databases with subsequent hand searching identified 47 eligible articles published since 1935. These articles described sampling of dust, air, soil and liquids in attempts to detect C. burnetii during 19 Q fever outbreaks and in 28 endemic settings. Environmental positivity was most commonly associated with ruminant livestock populations. Evidence describing spatio-temporal characteristics and associated geographical dispersion gradients was limited. The most commonly tested sample type was dust which also yielded the highest bacterial loads of >108 bacteria/cloth. The MD8 (Sartorius) air sampler was used widely for air sampling. Soil was the only sample type for which a validated laboratory protocol was established specifically for C. burnetii. Each environmental sample type has its advantages and limitations which are discussed in detail and a simplified framework to guide decisions around environmental sampling for C. burnetii is provided. In any type of environmental sampling, it is recommended to use standardized and validated methods and to match the most ideal sampling strategy and timing with the research context. These conditions are essential to be considered when designing future Q fever management plans that involve environmental sampling for C. burnetii.ARV-825 clinical trial

Trans-synaptic cell-adhesion molecules are critical for governing various stages of synapse development and specifying neural circuit properties via the formation of multifarious signaling pathways. Recent studies have pinpointed the putative roles of trans-synaptic cell-adhesion molecules in mediating various cognitive functions. Here, we review the literature on the roles of a diverse group of central synaptic organizers, including neurexins (Nrxns), leukocyte common antigen-related receptor protein tyrosine phosphatases (LAR-RPTPs), and their associated binding proteins, in regulating properties of specific type of synapses and neural circuits. In addition, we highlight the findings that aberrant synaptic adhesion signaling leads to alterations in the structures, transmission, and plasticity of specific synapses across diverse brain areas. These results seem to suggest that proper trans-synaptic signaling pathways by Nrxns, LAR-RPTPs, and their interacting network is likely to constitute central molecular complexes that form the basis for cognitive functions, and that these complexes are heterogeneously and complexly disrupted in many neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders.
Cognitive impairment is a common complication in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Currently, limited types of animal models are available for studying cognitive impairment in CKD. We used unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in mice as an animal model to study the cognitive changes and related pathology under prolonged renal impairment METHODS UUO was performed in 8-week-old male C57BL/6 N mice with double-ligation of their left ureter. A sham group was subjected to the same experimental procedure without ureteral obstruction. Cognitive and behavioral tests were performed to examine potential changes in cognition and behavior at 2, 4 and 12 weeks after surgery. Sera were collected, and kidneys and brains were harvested for the detection of systemic inflammation markers and neurodegenerative changes.

These mice displayed weak performance in the novel object recognition test, Y-maze test, and puzzle box test compared to the sham group. Reductions in synaptic proteins such as synapsin-1, synaptophysin, synaptotagmin, PSD95, NMDAR2B and AMPAR were confirmed by western blot analysis. Histological examination revealed elevated levels of Nrf2 and 8-hydroxyguanosine, and hyperphosphorylation of tau in the hippocampus. UUO mice also had increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and TNF-α.

We characterized the cognitive and neuropathological changes in UUO mice. The results show that this mouse model can be used to further study cognitive changes related to chronic renal impairment.
We characterized the cognitive and neuropathological changes in UUO mice. The results show that this mouse model can be used to further study cognitive changes related to chronic renal impairment.Carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO) modulate inflammatory nociception and anxiety. We evaluate whether treatments with a heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) inducer (CoPP) or a carbon monoxide-releasing molecule (CORM-2) are capable of inhibiting inflammatory pain aversiveness in wild type (WT) and inducible nitric oxide synthase-knock out (NOS2-KO) mice with persistent inflammation and its relationship with μ- (MOR) and δ- (DOR) opioid receptors. WT and NOS2-KO male mice with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) injected into the hind paw were evaluated in the von Frey and the escape-avoidance paradigm (PEAP) tests, at 10 days, before and after the treatment with CORM-2 (5 mg/kg) or CoPP (2.5 mg/kg). WT mice groups treated with CORM-2 or CoPP also received naloxone (NLX, a non-specific opioid receptor antagonist). The HO-1, neuronal nitric oxide synthase, NOS2, MOR, and DOR expression in the dorsal hippocampus were evaluated by western blot. CFA reduced mechanical threshold in WT and NOS2-KO mice but only increased the percentage of time in the light compartment in the PEAP in WT mice. CORM-2 and CoPP inhibited these effects in both strains. Pre-treatment with NLX reverses the anti-allodynic and anti-aversive effects of CORM-2 or CoPP in WT mice. GSK'872 CORM-2 and CoPP increases the protein levels of HO-1, MOR and DOR in the dorsal hippocampus of WT mice but not in NOS2-KO animals. Results showed that HOCO pathway activation promotes anti-allodynic effects and reduced pain aversiveness caused by peripheral inflammation by increasing the expression of MOR and DOR activated by HO-1 in the dorsal hippocampus.
Cervical pessary has been proven to be effective in reducing the rate of preterm birth in asymptomatic women with singleton gestations and short cervical length in the midtrimester of pregnancy; however, the efficacy of this device in women with arrested preterm labor is still a subject of debate.

This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the use of a cervical pessary in women with singleton pregnancy and arrested preterm labor would reduce the risk of preterm birth at <37 weeks of gestation.

This study is a parallel group, nonblinded, randomized trial. Participants included in the study were women with a diagnosis of arrested preterm labor between 24 0/7 and 33 6/7 weeks of gestations. The participants were randomized to either the cervical pessary group or no pessary group in a 11 ratio. The primary endpoint was preterm birth at <37 weeks of gestation. A sample size of 120 participants was determined, but the trial was concluded before the completion of enrollment.

A total of 61 women with singleton pregnancies and arrested preterm labor at 24 0/7 to 33 6/7 weeks of gestation were enrolled in the trial. Of the 61 women, 32 were randomized to the cervical pessary group and 29 to the control group. Preterm birth at <37 weeks of gestation occurred in 14 women (43.8%) in the pessary group and 6 women (20.7%) in the control group (relative risk, 2.98; 95% confidence interval, 0.96-9.30).

In this underpowered trial, among women with singleton pregnancies and arrested preterm labor, compared with no pessary use, the use of a cervical pessary does not result in a lower rate of preterm birth at <37 weeks of gestation.
In this underpowered trial, among women with singleton pregnancies and arrested preterm labor, compared with no pessary use, the use of a cervical pessary does not result in a lower rate of preterm birth at less then 37 weeks of gestation.GSK'872

from New York metropolitan area towards Western and Northern regions over time. Proportions of population aged 45 years and above (β=3.25 [0.17-6.32]), living alone at residential houses (β=3.31 [0.39--6.22]), and proportion of crowd residential houses (β=6.15 [2.15-10.14]) were positively associated with the growth rate of COVID-19 infection. In contrast, living alone at rental houses (β=-2.47 [-4.83--0.12]) and rate of mental health providers (β=-1.11 [-1.95--0.28]) were negatively associated with COVID-19 growth rate across all 16 time points.

There are geospatial differences in COVID-19 incidence after implementing different NPIs. Socioeconomic, racial/ethnic, and healthcare resource disparities at the structural and historical levels across counties need to be considered in infection control policymaking to narrow the unequal health impact on vulnerable populations effectively.

College students' mental health may be disproportionally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic because of the abrupt shift off campus and subsequent loss of a social network and potential long-term impact on job prospects.

We sought to assess the nature of COVID-19's mental health impact among a sample of undergraduates who were experiencing the pandemic as it occurred in real time.

In total, 140 college students completed smartphone-based ecological momentary assessments of anxiety and optimism related to COVID-19 and other generic mental health variables 6 times daily.

Participants completed >23,750 surveys. Overall, >75% of these surveys indicated at least some level of anxiety about COVID-19. On average, the proportion of responses each day at the highest levels of anxiety about COVID-19 was 7 times greater than the proportion of responses at the highest levels of non-COVID-19-specific anxiety. Structural change analyses indicated a significant downward trend in COVID-19 anxiety after the first week of June, but even at the lowest point, >15% of the participants in the sample still reported high levels of COVID-19 anxiety each day. Participants felt more anxious about COVID-19 on days when the number of new cases and deaths due to COVID-19 were higher. When participants felt anxious about COVID-19, they also felt sad, anxious (in general), and had a greater desire to drink and use drugs. Participants felt more optimistic about COVID-19 when they received more support from others and from their university.

This study demonstrated the widespread mental health impact that COVID-19 has had on college students.
This study demonstrated the widespread mental health impact that COVID-19 has had on college students.Mutation in SLC7A14 gene causes autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (arRP). Here we describe the generation and characterization of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) lines of RP patient with SLC7A14 mutation and his healthy parents. hiPSCs were derived from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) reprogrammed with integration-free plasmids including the reprogramming factors OCT3/4, SOX2, MYC and KLF4. All the established hiPSC lines showed normal karyotype, pluripotency and differentiation capacity.Human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells expressing Cas9 protein are valuable for the pathogenic mechanism study and drug discovery. These cells can be efficiently induced to differentiate into disease cell models with specific mutations through adding designed sgRNAs. Here, we generated a human gene-editable iPS cell line by gene editing method that Cas9 gene driven by Tet-on operator was perfectly integrated into the human AAVS1 safe harbor locus. The established Cas9 expression iPS cell line named as WMUi013-A can express endogenous pluripotent markers, has the ability to differentiate into the three germ layers, and possesses a normal karyotype.Drug checking is a service for people who use drugs that includes product analysis and an individual interview including results feedback and harm reduction counselling. It uses different analytical methods but few studies demonstrate their value in current practice. The main objective of this work is to compare the analytical performance of IR spectroscopy to laboratory reference method in the context of drug checking in a harm reduction centre. The secondary objectives are to carry out a description of the people who use drugs requesting a product analysis, and to compare the assumed compositions of products purchased with their real compositions. During 2018, all requests for drug testing analysis were included for on-site analysis by IR spectrometry in a harm reduction center and verified by the reference method (UPLC-HRMS) at Bordeaux University Hospital Center. Socioeconomic and product data were also collected. One hundred and thirty-six samples were collected. The results obtained with IR and UPLC-HRMS were compared. IR spectrometry results did not match with reference method in 8 % (n=11) of cases, corresponding to blotters, cannabis and some psychoactive substances present in mixture or in small quantities. Among the products collected, only 5.1 % (n=7) did not correspond to the declared product, either alone or with adulterants. The IR spectrometer allows a simple and rapid detection of at least one molecule, most often the one of interest. However, it is limited to powder and tablet type matrices and is not suitable for blotters, cannabis, mixed or low content substances for which high resolution mass spectrometry remains the reference method.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a congenitally inherited disease characterized by progressive muscle damage and loss of function in children, which currently has no cure. Parents of children with DMD go through significant challenges when caring for a child with this condition.

The aim of this study was to explore the lived experience of Jordanian parents caring for a child with DMD.

We utilized qualitative, descriptive, phenomenological design. Ten pairs of parents of children with DMD were interviewed at their homes from the southern region of Jordan. The Participant verbal as well as nonverbal cues were recorded during the interview. Selleckchem SB431542 Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's 7-step method.

Parents experienced psychosocial, emotional, and financial problems, which affected family dynamics and the quality of life. Themes emerged were face the new disease, caring for our child and handling the situation, staying in contact with the outside world, and career options and opportunities.

Parents experienced feelings of stress and anxiety mixed with emotions of hopelessness.Selleckchem SB431542
