What Happens After the AI Builds Your Site: Hosting, Costs and Growing Past the Prototype

Disclosure: I'm part of the team behind Veloxa Build. Facts below come from our public pricing, FAQ and comparison pages.

AI builders are very good at the first hour of a project. You type a description, a working site appears, and a few messages later it looks like something you would show a customer. The questions that matter start after that hour. Where does the site live? What happens to the bill as you keep changing it? What if the prototype turns into a real product?

This article looks at the part of AI building that demos skip: hosting, ongoing costs, ownership and the path from prototype to production. The examples use Veloxa Build, the AI website and app builder from VeloxaHost, because it was designed around exactly this question, but the checklist at the end applies to any builder.

Problem 1: AI credit and hosting get tangled together

Most AI builders sell you an allowance: credits, tokens or a dollar amount of AI usage each month. That is fair, because AI models cost real money to run. The trouble starts when the same allowance also pays for keeping your site online, or for the backend services your app uses.

When those are mixed, a busy month of edits can affect a live site, and it becomes hard to predict what a project really costs. For a business whose website is its storefront, that is the wrong trade-off.

Veloxa Build keeps them separate. Hosting with HTTPS is included on every plan, including Free, and it never uses AI credit. If your AI usage runs out, published sites stay online. You lose the ability to make AI changes until the allowance resets or you upgrade, nothing more.

Problem 2: you cannot see what each change costs

"100 credits a month" sounds generous until a single complex request uses several of them. Without per-message costs, it is easy to burn through an allowance in a weekend without noticing.

Veloxa Build shows the cost of every message in the builder and publishes its rates per million tokens. The main building model is $1.75 per million input tokens, $0.325 for cached input and $5.50 for output, which the pricing page describes as the model provider's list price plus 25 percent. A smaller model handles quick tasks like naming a project at a fraction of that.

The Pro plan includes $20 of usage a month, which works out to roughly 100 to 200 AI edits depending on their size. The practical habit that follows: ask for focused changes. "Rewrite the hero heading" costs far less than "redesign the whole site", and gives you more control too.

Problem 3: team members multiply the bill

A prototype often starts with one person. Then a co-founder wants to tweak the copy, a designer wants to adjust the layout and a client wants to fix their own phone number. On a per-seat plan, each of those people is another monthly charge.

Veloxa Build plans are per organization. On paid plans, everyone in your VeloxaHost organization can build and share the plan's AI usage, with no seat fees. The Free plan is for one person.

Problem 4: the draft and the live site are the same thing

Once real customers visit a site, you cannot have half-finished changes appearing live. Good builders separate the draft from what is published.

In Veloxa Build, edits stay in your draft until you choose "Publish changes". Every project has a shareable draft link for feedback, the Publish panel shows when the live site is behind the draft, and version history keeps the 30 most recent versions per project. Restoring is reversible, so a bad change is never permanent.

Problem 5: the prototype outgrows the builder

This is the big one. Many AI-built projects stay small, and that is fine. But some turn into something bigger: a tool with real users, an app that needs a relational database, background jobs or a custom backend. At that point a builder is no longer the right home.

With most builders, that means exporting the code and starting again with a new hosting provider: a new account, new billing, new dashboards and a migration.

Veloxa Build runs on VeloxaHost, which also sells managed web hosting and cloud servers on the same account:

Managed web hosting from $9.99 a month, for 3 to 100 sites on NVMe storage, with Git deploys, one-click WordPress, a browser terminal and file manager.

Cloud servers (VPS) from $5 a month, billed by the hour and capped at the monthly price, so an afternoon of testing costs pennies and a server left running never costs more than its monthly price.

The project, the hosting and the servers sit on one bill. Moving up a level is a change of plan, not a change of provider.

What "you own your code" should mean

Almost every builder says you own your code. The useful questions are on which plan you can get it, and what still works once you take it away.

Veloxa Build lets you download your project as plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript on every plan, including Free. Pages, styles and scripts run on any static host. Be aware of the honest caveat, though: forms, user sign-in, file storage and stored data rely on Veloxa Build hosting and do not work in an exported copy. If your app uses those features, plan how you will replace them before moving it elsewhere. This is true of most builders with built-in backends, even when it is not spelled out.

 What is not there yet

To make a good decision, you need the gaps as well as the features. Today Veloxa Build has no GitHub sync, no SQL database (generated apps get a key-value database), no model picker and no payments integration. Custom domains are listed as coming soon on paid plans; for now, sites publish to an address like yourname.veloxa.site. AI features inside the apps you build work while you build and test them, but are not yet available to visitors of a published app.

For marketing sites, portfolios, small business pages, booking and lead forms, and simple internal tools, none of those gaps get in the way. For an online store or a data-heavy SaaS, they do, and the VPS route is the better fit once you reach that stage.

A checklist for any AI builder

Before you commit a real project to an AI builder, ask these questions:

Does hosting use my AI allowance? If it does, a busy month of edits can put your live site at risk.

Can I see what each message costs? Per-message costs make spending predictable.

Do I pay per team member? Multiply the plan price by everyone who will touch the project.

Is there a draft separate from the live site? And can I restore an earlier version?

Can I download my code on my plan? And which features stop working after export?

Where does the project go if it grows? Same account, or a migration to a new provider?

What happens if I stop paying? On Veloxa Build, Pro is switched off in the console under Settings → Add-ons, and the organization keeps the plan until the end of the paid month.

 The bottom line

The first hour of AI building is impressive with almost any tool. The months after that decide whether it was a good choice. Pick a builder where hosting is separate from AI credit, costs are visible, the team does not multiply the bill and there is a clear next step when the project grows.

Veloxa Build starts free at veloxahost.com/veloxa-build, with Pro at $25 a month for the whole organization. Hosting and VPS plans are at veloxahost.com/pricing.

AI Website Builders Compared in 2026: Veloxa Build vs Lovable, Bolt, v0, Replit and Base44

Disclosure: I work on Veloxa Build, one of the builders compared here. Competitor figures come from each provider's public pages, and I list where we fall short.

There are now more AI app and website builders than anyone can try in a weekend. Lovable, Bolt, v0, Replit and Base44 are the names that come up most, and each one promises roughly the same thing: describe what you want and get a working result. The differences only show up when you look at pricing, what the AI allowance actually buys, how team seats are billed, where your project is hosted and whether you can take your code with you.

This article compares Veloxa Build Pro with the plan closest in price from each of those builders. Competitor figures come from each provider's public pricing and documentation pages, checked on 8 October 2026. Pricing in this space changes often, so treat this as a snapshot and check the provider's page before you buy.

 The short version

Price: most entry paid plans cluster between $20 and $30 a month.

AI allowance: every builder measures it differently: credits, tokens or dollars. That makes direct comparison harder than it should be.

Seats: this is where costs diverge most for teams. Some builders charge per member, others do not.

Hosting: some include it, some bill it separately, and some count backend usage against your AI credits.

Code ownership: almost all let you get your code out, but on different plans and through different routes.

 Price and included AI

Here is what the closest-priced plan of each builder offered on 8 October 2026:

Veloxa Build Pro: $25 a month, with $20 of AI usage at published per-token rates. Yearly billing at $250 a year is coming soon.

Lovable Pro: $25 a month, or about $20.83 billed yearly, with 100 credits. A message uses roughly 0.5 to 2 credits.

Bolt Pro: $25 a month, with 10 million tokens.

v0 Plus: $30 per user per month, with $30 of credits per user.

Replit Core: $20 a month, or $18 billed yearly, with $20 of credits.

Base44: Starter at $20 a month ($16 billed yearly) with 100 message credits and 2,000 integration credits; Builder at $50 a month ($40 billed yearly).

The unit matters. Credits are simple to read but hard to translate into work, because one complex message can use several. Tokens are precise but abstract. A dollar allowance at published rates, which Veloxa Build and v0 both use in some form, lets you see exactly what each message cost. Veloxa Build shows the cost of every message in the builder, and publishes its rates: $1.75 per million input tokens and $5.50 per million output tokens for the main building model, which it describes as the model provider's list price plus 25 percent.

In practice, Veloxa Build estimates $20 of usage as about 100 to 200 AI edits a month. That is a guide, not a limit. Large rewrites cost more than small wording changes.

 Team seats: the hidden multiplier

For a solo maker, seats do not matter. For an agency or a small team, they can double or triple the bill.

Veloxa Build: unlimited members on paid plans, no seat fees. Everyone in the organization shares the plan's AI usage.

Lovable: unlimited members.

Bolt: team access is on the Teams plan at $30 per member.

v0: $30 per user.

Replit Core: up to 5 builders in your workspace.

Base44: multi-user editing on every plan.

A three-person team on a per-seat plan at $30 pays $90 a month before any extra usage. On a no-seat-fee plan, the same team pays the plan price once and shares the allowance. Which is better depends on how heavily each person builds.

 Hosting: included, separate, or metered

An AI builder is only half the job. The site has to live somewhere, and hosting is where the models differ most:

Veloxa Build: hosting is included on every plan and never uses AI credit. Sites stay online even if AI usage runs out. Custom domains are coming soon (5 on Pro).

Lovable: hosting included; backend usage draws on credits.

Bolt: hosting included, with 30 GB a month.

v0: hosting is billed separately through Vercel.

Replit: deployments are billed separately, by usage.

Base44: hosting included, with a custom domain from the Starter plan.

If your site is a business's main storefront, the question to ask is simple: what happens to the live site when the AI allowance runs out? Separating hosting from AI credit means the answer is "nothing".

 Code ownership and version control

Code download: Veloxa Build allows it on every plan, including Free. Lovable on paid plans. Bolt yes. v0 and Replit through GitHub or Git. Base44 from the Builder plan.

GitHub sync: Lovable, Bolt, v0 and Replit have it, and Base44 from Builder. Veloxa Build does not have GitHub sync yet.

Version restore: all six offer it in some form: version history, checkpoints or deployments.

If you are a developer who wants every change in a Git repository from day one, the builders with GitHub sync are a better fit today. If you mainly want the safety of being able to leave, a plain download on every plan covers that.

 Model choice

v0, Replit and Base44 (Builder plan and up) let you pick which AI model does the work. Lovable and Veloxa Build do not; Bolt offers a choice of agent rather than model. Model choice matters most to developers who already have a favorite model for code. For most people building a site, the default works fine.

 Growing past the builder

Most AI-built projects start as a prototype. Some become real products that need a database, background jobs or more control than a builder gives. What happens then?

Veloxa Build runs on VeloxaHost, so the same account has managed web hosting and cloud servers (VPS) from $5 a month, billed by the hour and capped at the monthly price.

Replit offers Reserved VMs from $15 a month.

The others expect you to export the code and move it to a different provider when you outgrow them.

Where Veloxa Build falls short today

A fair comparison includes the gaps. As of October 2026, Veloxa Build has:

No GitHub sync

No SQL database (generated apps get a built-in key-value database, plus sign-in and file storage)

No model picker

No payments integration

Custom domains still marked as coming soon

If you need any of these right now, one of the other builders is the better choice for that project.

Also worth knowing: website builders with AI added

Traditional website platforms have added AI too. Hostinger's AI Builder, for example, is sold with its hosting plans. Its $2.99 to $7.99 monthly prices require a 48-month prepayment and renew at $10.99 to $25.99 a month, and plans include 5 to 15 one-time AI credits, with a separate credit plan for building with the AI agent. That model suits someone who wants a conventional site with an AI head start, rather than ongoing AI-driven building.

 How to choose

Solo maker, wants code in Git from day one: Lovable, Bolt or v0.

Developer who wants to pick the model: v0, Replit or Base44 Builder.

Small business or freelancer who wants hosting handled and predictable costs: Veloxa Build or Base44.

Agency or team that would pay per seat elsewhere: Veloxa Build or Lovable, since neither charges per member.

Prototype that may become a real product on its own server: Veloxa Build (VPS on the same account) or Replit (Reserved VMs).

Every builder here has a free way to try it. The most reliable test is to give each the same prompt for a project you actually need, then compare the result, the cost shown and what it would take to keep it online for a year.

The full side-by-side table with source links for every figure is at veloxahost.com/veloxa-build/compare.
