This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

 What I Built

WhisperTrail is a small step toward reconnecting with the world outside our screens.

It is an AI-powered nature journaling web app that encourages people to take a walk, observe their surroundings, and notice the little things they might usually ignore.

Here’s how it works:

Start a walk and step outside.

Capture a photo of something you notice in nature.

Let AI generate a caption for your photo.

Add your own observation and turn the moment into a personal nature memory.

Save your moments in a field journal to revisit later.

WhisperTrail is designed for anyone who wants to slow down, spend more time outdoors, and build a habit of noticing the world around them.

The goal isn't to spend more time using an app. It's to use a little technology to encourage more time away from the screen.

 Demo

🌐 Live Demo: https://whisper-trail-5jajqvmih-riddhika2024.vercel.app/

 Code

💻 GitHub Repository: https://github.com/Riddhika2024/WhisperTrail

 How I Built It

I built WhisperTrail using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Vite.

The core AI feature uses Transformers.js with the open model Xenova/vit-gpt2-image-captioning to generate captions for photos directly in the browser.

Instead of relying on a separate hosted image-captioning inference API, the app runs the model in the user's browser. The generated caption is combined with the user's own observation to create a nature-journaling experience.

I also implemented a local field journal using IndexedDB, allowing users to save their nature moments in the browser.

The initial model download may require an internet connection, so I am not claiming that the entire app works fully offline.

Building this project helped me explore how open-source AI can be integrated into a practical web application while keeping the experience focused on the real world.

 Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

For WhisperTrail, open innovation matters because AI should be something developers can experiment with, understand, and adapt—not just access through a closed API.

Using an open model and the Transformers.js library gave me a way to run image captioning in the browser without depending on a separate hosted image-captioning service.

This approach also means the photo does not need to be sent to a separate image-captioning API by WhisperTrail. The field journal stores moments locally in the browser as well.

Open tools make experimentation more accessible and give developers more flexibility to explore different models and build experiences around their needs.

Most importantly, WhisperTrail uses AI for a purpose beyond keeping people online: helping them notice, explore, and appreciate the world outside their screens.

 What I Learned

Building WhisperTrail helped me understand how to integrate an open-source AI model into a web app, work with browser-based inference, and save user-created entries locally.

It also challenged me to think about technology differently: not every useful app needs to maximize screen time.

Sometimes, the best experience is one that encourages you to put your phone away and go outside. 🌱
