After weeks of intense development, late nights, unexpected setbacks (and more than a few “why won’t this work” moments), it’s finally here: Tavrn Alpha is officially live.

Tavrn is now available — in its first public form — at tavrn.top. 🎉

So why does it feel like every chat platform eventually stops being for us?

One of the biggest problems that creeps into every platform is, well... creep.

At Tavrn, we’re all about bringing people together in meaningful ways — and AHA! is one of our biggest steps in that direction. It’s our version of server discovery, but it’s so much more than a list of “popular” rooms. AHA! highlights the most active, engaging, and community-driven spaces on Tavrn.

And the best part? It’s open to you.

AHA! is a curated spotlight for standout servers on Tavrn. These are the communities you want to join — the ones where the chat’s always alive, the vibes are great, and something cool is always going on.

Servers accepted into the AHA! Program are featured more prominently across Tavrn, from search results to homepage shoutouts, and even outside the platform on Tavrn’s official social media.

📋 How Do You Apply?

If your server meets the minimum requirements, applying is easy:

Minimum Requirements:

At least 15 server members
3+ admins/moderators (including yourself)
Around 6–7 messages per day in the last week or so

If your server qualifies, head to:

Server Settings → Programs → AHA! Program

You’ll be asked to fill out a short application:

What your server is about
Why you want to join the AHA! Program
Your server’s promo message (this is what other users might see)

If your server doesn’t meet the requirements, the option to apply will be hidden.

We’ve officially reached Build 8 — our second milestone — and Tavrn is starting to feel like a real platform. This post covers our new server system, real-time messaging, roles, settings, and a few things we’re still keeping under wraps (👀).

We’ve been quiet… because we’ve been building.\
And now, we’re proud to say — Tavrn has officially hit Build 8, our second milestone.

This one’s a big deal.

What’s New in Build 8?

After a full system reset not too long ago, we’ve been sprinting toward one of the most important parts of any chat app: servers.

And now? They’re finally working.\
Mostly.

✅ Real-time messages\
✅ Roles and permissions\
✅ Server-wide settings\
✅ Channels that actually channel

This marks the first time Tavrn feels like a platform (to me atleast), not just a prototype.

This Changes Everything

With the server system online, Tavrn moves from “messaging app” to full-fledged community space.\
It’s no longer just about DMs — it’s about how people come together.

Roles let communities self-moderate.\
Settings help personalize and protect.\
Channels give you space to spread out (without overwhelming your screen).\
And the real-time system? It’s buttery smooth.

Of course, we’re still ironing out a few things — but this is the moment we’ve been working toward.

After a major setback wiped our codebase, we rebuilt Tavrn's 1-to-1 DM system from scratch — in just 3 days. This post breaks down how we did it, what’s new, and why it’s already better than before.

After losing our original codebase, we had two choices:

Start over slowly and mourn the loss...

Or hit the ground running and build something better.

We chose the second one.

The DM System, Reborn

It only took 3 days — but our 1-to-1 messaging system is back.

Fully rebuilt from the ground up. Clean. Fast. Future-proof.

And, honestly? It’s better than what we had before.

We redesigned how messages move, how conversations flow, and how it all scales.

What used to feel basic now feels tight — like something you’ll actually want to use every day.

What’s New?

Here’s a little peek at what’s already working in our new DM system:

Group Chats Deserve Better

You’d think after decades of chat apps, we’d have group chats figured out by now. But somehow, most of them still suck.

What Even Is a “Group Chat” Anymore?

In a lot of apps, the term “group chat” just means a smaller server with fewer features.

You get:

A slightly different icon
A few message options
And that’s it

No context. No identity. Just another DM with extra people and a weird sidebar.

It’s either that, or you have to create a whole server just to get roles, permissions, threads, and channels — which turns “let’s start a group chat” into “let’s manage a mini-organization.”

And that’s not what anyone signed up for.

The Missing Pieces

Group chats should feel like their own thing:

A space for chaos and cohesion
Something between a private room and a casual clubhouse
Not a stripped-down server or a bloated DM thread

But right now, most platforms treat them as an afterthought.

No real customization.

No context for new members.

No lightweight tools to help with organization without making it feel corporate.

Just a name, a group of people, and a prayer.

We’re Building Group Chats That Feel Right

With Tavrn, we’re doing group chats differently from day one.

We want them to:

Feel personal, like a cozy living room
Have tools just enough to make them manageable without killing the vibe
Let you organize conversations when you want to — not force it

We Lost Everything (Well, Almost Everything)

We hit a major setback. Our entire codebase was corrupted, and we have to rebuild Tavrn from scratch.

This isn’t the blog post we wanted to write.

Somehow — and we’re still not entirely sure how... but our entire codebase got corrupted. Like, fully. Totally. Beyond-repair levels of corrupted. No backups that worked. No magic undo button. Everything we’ve been building for Tavrn for the past months? Gone.

So yeah. We have to start over.

But This Is Not the End

The good news is we’re not dead in the water.

Our databases? Still intact.

Our infrastructure? Still there.

Our vision? Very much alive.

And maybe most importantly, we know exactly what we’re building now.

The original version of Tavrn was trial by fire. We were experimenting, testing, tweaking, failing, learning, building, and rebuilding. That messy process gave us a clear map of what works... and what doesn’t.

So while it sucks to lose all that progress, we’re not starting from scratch mentally. We’re starting with experience.

So What Happens Now?

We’re getting back to work like... immediately.

Honestly, we expect to recover a huge chunk of what we lost pretty quickly. Some of it will be even better this time around. Cleaner. Smarter. More efficient. And now we can build with the benefit of hindsight instead of just hope.

That said, this might slow things down a little. We’re not going to rush it, and we’re not cutting corners to make up for lost time. We’re still committed to building Tavrn the right way.

This sucks. We won’t pretend it doesn’t. But the support we’ve gotten already, even while Tavrn is still in development, means the world to us.

A friendly introduction to Tavrn, a new community platform built as an alternative to Discord and Guilded. This post explains why Tavrn was created, what makes it different, and invites readers to join the journey of building a better online hangout—without paywalls or corporate vibes.

Let’s be real—finding a good place to hang out online with your friends or community is getting harder. Discord is everywhere, but it’s starting to feel a bit… corporate. Guilded? It was awesome, but now it’s basically Roblox-only. Revolt is cool if you’re into open source, but it’s still finding its feet.

So, we made Tavrn. And honestly? We’re just a bunch of people who wanted something better for ourselves—and for you.

Why Tavrn Exists

We love hanging out online. We love gaming, sharing memes, running events, and just chatting about life. But we got tired of paywalls, missing features, and feeling like we were just another number in someone’s user stats.

Discord: Super popular, but you have to pay for the good stuff, and it’s easy to get lost in the noise.
Guilded: Used to be the best alternative, especially for gamers, but now it’s locked down to Roblox. If you’re not into Roblox, you’re out of luck.
Revolt: Open source and privacy-focused, but still growing and not quite there yet for big communities.

We wanted something that felt like home—a place where you and your friends can just… be. No weird restrictions. No “pay us or else.” Just a great experience, for free.

What We’re Building

Tavrn is our answer. We’re building it to be:

A real alternative to Discord: Familiar features, but with a friendlier vibe and no corporate nonsense.
A replacement for Guilded: If you miss what Guilded used to be, you’ll feel right at home here.
No forced payments: All the good stuff is free. We’re not here to nickel-and-dime you.
