A Browser Strategy Game With Exactly One Resource

Most .io games are reflexes with a scoreboard. Territorial.io is different — it's real-time strategy compressed into a 15–30 minute round, running in a tab with no account and no install. You can play territorial.io online right now; the page embeds the official web version.

One resource: population. No gold, no tech tree. Your land generates population, population is your army, and the share you commit to an attack decides whether it succeeds. Every few seconds you answer one question: expand into empty land, or spend troops on a defended border? Empty land is nearly free; a defended border is a spending decision. Knowing which you're facing is the skill ceiling of the first ten minutes.

The mechanic newcomers miss: attacking along a long border costs far more troops than a narrow one, because your army spreads across the whole front. That's why compact nations punch above their weight — a small country with a tight border holds off a giant, while a sprawling empire leaks everywhere. Shape matters more than size: round out a corner instead of stretching a thin corridor.

What actually works:

The first two minutes are for empty land — population compounds like interest.

Never attack a neighbor with a stronger third party watching. If two of you bleed, the spectator wins.

Keep a permanent border force; committing 100% to an offensive invites being eaten from the other side.

Being number two is a strategy. The leader attracts a coalition; stay quiet and expand into the wreckage.

Watch troop counts, not land area.

For the dev crowd: your browser connects to a game server, and everything — other players, their moves, the shapes — happens live server-side and streams to you. A stable connection matters more than a fast machine. Nice little case study in thin-client real-time architecture.

Built by independent German developer David Tschacher (started 2020, released 2021), it's since grown a dedicated map-making and strategy community, plus official mobile versions — still rare for the genre.

It loads in seconds, asks for no account, costs nothing. [Play territorial.io online].
