One codebase, seven marketplaces: lessons from shipping a tools ecosystem

When you build a product that has to live in a browser extension store, a CMS marketplace, a desktop store and two mobile stores, you quickly learn that where you ship matters as much as what you ship. Here is how we structure distribution for Volade — a suite of 300+ free web tools wrapped in one premium ecosystem — and the lessons that cost us the most time.

 1. Treat every marketplace as a product

Each platform has its own review rules, metadata format, screenshot sizes and update cadence. We lost more time to rejected listings than to actual bugs. The fix was boring but effective: a single listing kit (icon set, screenshots, short and long descriptions, FAQ) stored next to the code. Submitting to a new store became a copy-paste job instead of a design task.

 2. One licence beats five pricing pages

Selling the same capability on Chrome Web Store, WordPress, Microsoft Store and the App Store means each store takes its cut and displays its own price. We moved to one licence that unlocks everything, letting each store handle only its platform's checkout. Customers stop comparing prices across stores, and we stopped maintaining five pricing pages.

 3. Ship the free tier everywhere

Our free tier — every product in its basic version, no credit card — is what earns reviews, tweets and organic installs. The paid tier converts people who already trust the tool. In practice: free listings in every store are your cheapest acquisition channel, and they double as backlinks to your site.

 4. Local-first is a distribution advantage

Wherever possible, processing happens on the user's device. That gave us three unexpected wins:

fewer server bills as we grew,

a privacy story that store reviewers actually like,

and apps that keep working when our API has a bad day.

 5. Store profiles are SEO you control for free

Every marketplace profile is an indexable page with a link back to you. Filling every field — screenshots, category, links, FAQ, changelog — consistently moved us up in in-store search, and the referral traffic from these directories compounds quietly over months.

 Wrapping up

Shipping wide is not about launching everywhere once; it's about making "everywhere" repeatable. If you're building a multi-platform product, start with the listing kit and the pricing model — everything else is detail.

You can see the whole ecosystem in action at volade.com. Happy shipping! 🚀
