Are you looking to work with some of the most in-demand technologies in software development today? Akello is an open-source project that leverages a powerful stack to solve complex data integration challenges in healthcare. Not only is Akello tackling real-world problems, but it’s also a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with modern technologies like Supertokens, Python, Kubernetes, Microservices, Kafka, and Temporal.

What is Akello?
At its core, Akello is designed to simplify data integration across healthcare systems. By making it easier to connect different services through microservices, we aim to accelerate innovation in an industry that’s notorious for being slow and fragmented. But we’re still in the early stages, and we need developers to help build and shape the project.

Here’s the tech stack powering Akello:

Supertokens: We use Supertokens for user authentication, providing a secure and scalable way to handle user sessions and authentication flows. If you’re interested in learning how to manage secure logins and authentication in a microservice environment, Akello offers hands-on experience.

Python: As one of the most popular programming languages today, Python powers much of the backend logic in Akello. Whether you're already familiar with Python or want to sharpen your skills in building scalable services, contributing to Akello is a great way to dive deeper.

Kubernetes: Akello runs its microservices on Kubernetes, one of the most powerful tools for orchestrating containers. If you’ve been wanting to learn how to manage distributed systems or scale microservices in a cloud-native environment, Akello provides a sandbox to hone those skills.

Microservices Architecture: Akello’s architecture is built on microservices, meaning every component is independent, modular, and easy to extend. This is a perfect chance to contribute to a real-world microservice-based project while learning best practices around service isolation and communication.

Kafka: We rely on Kafka for our message bus, allowing different services to communicate asynchronously. If you're looking to understand how to implement event-driven systems or manage real-time data pipelines, Akello gives you practical exposure to Kafka in action.

Temporal: Finally, Akello integrates Temporal for workflow orchestration. If you’ve been curious about how to manage complex, long-running processes or build fault-tolerant systems, contributing to Akello will give you experience with Temporal’s unique workflow engine.

Why should you join Akello?
Akello is not just about solving a big problem in healthcare—it’s also a learning platform for developers interested in working with cutting-edge tech. By contributing, you’ll gain practical experience with the tools and frameworks that are reshaping how software is built today. Whether you're new to microservices or want to expand your knowledge of Kubernetes, Kafka, or Temporal, Akello is the perfect project to get hands-on experience.

In healthcare, systems don’t play nicely together. Whether it’s EHR systems, medical devices, or lab data, the integration process is often tedious, fragmented, and forces developers to reinvent the wheel over and over again. This slows down innovation, making it harder to deliver the life-saving technology and streamlined solutions healthcare desperately needs.

That’s why we’re building Akello. Our mission is to simplify data integration in healthcare by providing a flexible, microservice-based platform that connects different systems effortlessly. But we’re still early in the process, and this is where you come in.

Akello is designed to make it easier for developers to build integrations without starting from scratch. It’s a platform where different point solutions can plug in and work together. But there’s more to be done, and we need contributors to help shape the project and solve real-world problems. If you’ve ever worked with healthcare standards like HL7 or FHIR, or struggled with connecting siloed systems, you’ll know exactly how much value a project like Akello can bring.

By contributing to Akello, you’re not just building software—you’re helping create a foundation that could accelerate innovation across the healthcare industry.
Building Akello: Join Us in Simplifying Data Integration for Healthcare

If you’ve ever worked in healthcare tech, you know the struggle—integrating data is a monumental challenge. Systems don’t talk to each other, data is siloed, and every new project feels like a painful repeat of the same manual integration work. Whether it’s connecting EHR systems, medical devices, or handling patient data across multiple platforms, the process is slow, error-prone, and exhausting.

Enter Akello—or at least, the idea of it.

Akello is an open-source project we’re currently developing with one goal in mind: to simplify data integration in healthcare. We’re building a platform that makes it easy to connect different services using a modular, microservice-driven architecture. But we’re not there yet—and we need your help to get it off the ground.

Healthcare’s complexity is what makes innovation so slow. Every hospital or clinic might have its own way of managing data, and developers are constantly rebuilding the same integrations from scratch, project after project. Akello aims to change that by providing a set of building blocks to unify these disparate systems. The idea is to create something extensible, where developers can plug in new services without needing to start over each time.

But here’s the exciting part: Akello is still in development, and we need contributors. If you’ve got experience building in healthcare, or if you’ve battled with these data challenges yourself, you know exactly how critical this problem is—and why solving it is so important. We’re building Akello to be flexible and extensible, and we need input from developers who understand the healthcare space to make sure we’re solving the right problems.

Right now, we’re working on getting the core infrastructure ready, but there’s so much more to do. We’re looking for developers who are passionate about making healthcare systems talk to each other more effectively. Whether you have experience with microservices, healthcare standards like HL7 or FHIR, or just want to help shape the future of data integration in this field, we’d love for you to contribute.

By joining Akello, you’ll be helping to build a platform that can transform how developers handle healthcare integrations. You’ll have the opportunity to influence its direction and solve real problems in one of the most challenging industries out there.

If you’re ready to help make healthcare tech faster and easier to build, check out our repo and join the conversation. Together, we can make Akello the go-to platform for healthcare data integration.
