Creating a Tinder-like Swipe UI on Vue

Have you ever wondered how that swipe-right-swipe-left, tinder-like user experience was built? I did, several days ago. I come from more of a backend background, and to my uninitiated mind, I find this sort of thing really amazing.

I was curious, how hard would it be for an average mediocre developer like me to build something cool like that?

  Reconnaisance

Gathering information was always my first step when working on new projects. I don't start experimenting with any code, I google first. I mean, surely someone smarter than me has already thought of this before.

And surely enough, after searching for "vue swipeable cards", first thing google gave me was just that (lucky me).

It's an article from css-tricks by Mateusz Rybczonek about building swipeable cards using
interact.js
.

The article will explain how a swipeable component itself is built far better than me. What's more important is that he extracted the functionality and published it to npm as vue2-interact (yay open source!).

While the article did explain how everything works, it's essentially just boilerplate code for us. What we need is to actually use the extracted functionality itself. That's why the
Vue2InteractDraggable
was a blessing, all the heavy-lifting was already done for us, it's just a matter of figuring out how we would use it on our own project.

  Experiment

At this point, all I need to do is play with it. The docs are pretty clear. Let's start of with the most simplest code that we can interact with:

<template>
  <section class="container">
    <div class="fixed-center">
      <Vue2InteractDraggable
        :interact-out-of-sight-x-coordinate="500"
        :interact-max-rotation="15"
        :interact-x-threshold="200"
        :interact-y-threshold="200"
        class="rounded-borders shadow-10 card">
        <div class="card__main">
        </div>
      </Vue2InteractDraggable>
    </div>
  </section>
</template>

<script>
import { Vue2InteractDraggable } from 'vue2-interact'

export default {
  name: 'SwipeableCards',
  components: { Vue2InteractDraggable }
}
</script>

Nothing fancy, this just displays a pink box at the center screen that I can drag around.

Cool, cool, cool, cool. It's working alright. Now that we've verified that, It's time to think about the rest of the stuff that I want to accomplish.

To demonstrate the kind of user interaction that I was hoping, I've boiled things down to the following requirements.

Detect if the card was dragged out of view and hide it.

Stack the draggable cards on top of each other.

Be able to control the swiping action of the swipe gesture (programmatically trigger via buttons).

  Problem #1: Detect and Hide

Problem #1 is quite simple,
Vue2InteractDraggable
component emits
drag*
events when
interact-out-of-sight-*-coordinate
was exceeded, it also hides the component automatically.

  Problem #2: Stack the cards

Problem #2 is quite tricky. The
Vue2InteractDraggable
is technically just a single draggable component. UI-wise, stacking them could be as simple as using css to implement a combination of
z-index
,
width
, and
box-shadow
to emulate depth. But would the swipe component still work? Well, I could stop
pointer-events
on the bottommost cards to avoid any side-effects.

Let's try it out. I'll use an array, popping off the first element on each swipe-right. Seems reasonable, right?

Here's the code so far:

<template>
  <section class="container">
    <div>
        <Vue2InteractDraggable
          v-for="(card, index) in cards"
          :key="index"
          :interact-out-of-sight-x-coordinate="500"
          :interact-max-rotation="15"
          :interact-x-threshold="200"
          :interact-y-threshold="200"
          @draggedRight="right"
          class="rounded-borders card fixed fixed--center"
          :class="{
            'card--top': index === 0
          }">
          <div class="flex flex--center" style="height: 100%">
            <h1>{{card.text}}</h1>
          </div>
      </Vue2InteractDraggable>
    </div>
  </section>
</template>
<script>
import { Vue2InteractDraggable } from 'vue2-interact'

  }
  &:nth-child(3) {

    background: green;
    top: 54%;
  }
  &--top {
    pointer-events: auto !important;
  }
}
</style>

Now this is what I have:

Well, that's a total failure. For some reason, when the event fires for the first card, it also fires for the second card. You can see below that after my first swipe, there are only 2 cards left on the DOM, but we can't see the second card because it's rotated out of view. On the dev tool, we can see that the transform animation style is being set on the second card after swiping the first card (You can see that it pops back when I disabled the style via devtool).

The issue is still there even when I tried to simply lay the cards in rows. I'm not sure why this happens. I must be missing something or it's an issue from the
Vue2InteractDraggable
component itself.

At this point, I have two options: I can continue on debugging, dig around the actual implementation, possibly backtrack how the original author extracted the functionality to find out what's different, check the github repo for similar issues and try to find answers from there; Or think of a different approach to accomplish the same thing and just circle back on it some other time.

I'm choosing the latter. A different approach might end up just as good as the first one. There's no point in biting off more than I could chew at this time. I could also just visit it again some other time.

Let's move on.

The previous result got me thinking.. If things break everytime I use multiple
Vue2InteractDraggable
components, why not avoid doing that altogether and just use one? After all, I'm only dragging one card at a time. Why not just use the same card and replace the content accordingly? Coupled with other css mumbo-jumbos, I think this might work.

Let's come up with the simplest code that can verify my assumptions:

<template>
  <section class="container">
    <div class="fixed fixed--center" style="z-index: 3">
      <Vue2InteractDraggable
        v-if="isVisible"
        :interact-out-of-sight-x-coordinate="500"

        :interact-y-threshold="200"
        @draggedRight="right"

  width: 300px;
  height: 400px;
  color: white;
  &--one {

  }
  &--two {
    background-color: red;
    width: 280px;
    top: 51%;
  }
  &--three {
    background-color: orange;
    width: 260px;
    top: 51.8%;
  }
}
</style>

Aand it worked!

This also seems simpler compared to my first approach. I'm reusing the same
Vue2InteractDraggable
instance instead of instantiating one for each element in the array. We don't even need to stack all the cards anyway, we just need to keep that illusion up.

That being said, I should probably display the next element's content on the card behind the first to further improve the illusion, like so:

<template>
  <section class="container">
    <div class="fixed fixed--center" style="z-index: 3">
      <Vue2InteractDraggable
        v-if="isVisible"

        :interact-x-threshold="200"
        :interact-y-threshold="200"
        @draggedRight="right"
        class="rounded-borders card card--one">

  methods: {
    right() {

      setTimeout(() => {
        this.index++
        this.isVisible = true
      }, 300)
    }
  }
}
</script>

I'm also hiding the bottommost dummy cards accordingly as I change the topmost card, good 'ol switcheroo.

That worked pretty well. Hiding the dummy cards as we move the
index
up worked like a charm too. This would probably look even better when we start using images instead of
text
and colored
div
s. We could even further boost the illusion by putting some subtle transition animation as the bottommost card become the topmost. But I'll worry about those later, let's move on to the final piece of the puzzle.

  Problem #3: Trigger Swipe action via Button Click

Fortunately, this is fairly trivial too.
vue2-interact
exposes an
EventBus
that we could use to trigger the drag/swipe actions. According to the docs, it's as simple as supplying the
interact-event-bus-events
prop with an object that contains the events you need and then using
InteractEventBus
to trigger the desired action.

<template>
<Vue2InteractDraggable
  @draggedLeft="draggedLeft"
  :interact-event-bus-events="interactEventBusEvents"
  v-if="isShowing"
  class="card">
  <div>
    <h3 class="cardTitle">Drag me!</h3>
  </div>
</Vue2InteractDraggable>

<BaseButton @click="dragLeft" label="⇦" />
</template>
<script>
import { Vue2InteractDraggable, InteractEventBus } from 'vue2-interact'

export default {
  components: { Vue2InteractDraggable },
  data() {
    return {
      isShowing: true,
      interactEventBusEvents: {
        draggedLeft: INTERACT_DRAGGED_LEFT,
      },
    };
  },

  methods: {
    dragLeft() {
      InteractEventBus.$emit(INTERACT_DRAGGED_LEFT);
    },
  }
};
</script>

Essentially, we just told the component to trigger the
draggedLeft
event everytime we
$emit
an
INTERACT_DRAGGED_LEFT
over at the
InteractEventBus
.

And with that, I think we got all the things we need to start putting it all together.

  Putting it all together

I downloaded some images from unsplash and scaled it down for my purposes. I used those images as the value of my array so I could replace the texts and removed the background colors. I also realized that it's simpler to enhance the illusion if I change the orientation of my card stack. Instead of stacking it upwards, I stacked them diagonally. In this way, my transition animation could be as simple as taking the x and y translation of the second card and putting it on the first as the switch happens. I won't bore you by showing all the steps I took, I think you already get the idea, I'll leave it to your imagination.

After dropping in some more css magic, gradients, shadows and stuff. A google font and some material icons. I ended up with something like this:

Behold, Kittynder! Tinder for cats. Does it make sense? I don't know. But it's a pun opportunity. If this is a real app, my cat would probably scratch right on Katrina, they're around the same age, I think they would hit it off.

You can check out the entire code on this github repository: kittynder. I published a demo over at netlify: kittynder.netlify.com. I highly suggest viewing it on a mobile viewport.

  Epilogue

In this simple activity, I realized how easy it actually is to build this swipeable, tinder-like UI thing today. This took me just less than two hours to complete. Now more than ever, the amount of tools and resources over the internet is enough for you to build a lot of things, things that seem like something so far out of your league before. This is the power of ̶u̶l̶t̶r̶a̶ ̶i̶n̶s̶t̶i̶n̶c̶t̶ open-source community. That's also one of the reason why I started writing tutorials like this. It's my way of giving back to the community. I might be just a lowly mediocre developer, but still, my thought-process and problem-solving approach could be valuable to people who are just starting out (and to future me, because I will completely forget everything after a year).

  Next Steps?

Of course, this is by no means production-ready. My css-game is pretty bad, you should probably consider using something like tailwind.css, and pre-cache the images, check browser compatibility, etc.. But hey, it's a good exercise. Step-by-step, you'll eventually get there. Just search, read, and build.

I'm actually implementing something similar on a slightly larger personal project using Quasar Framework but that's a story for a different time.

I'm not a 'natural' frontend developer, learning vue and re-learning Javascript with my Java knowledge came as a challenge. Not to mention all those bundlers, builders, like webpack, gulp, grunt and other weird noises that adds to the overall complexitiy of learning modern web frameworks. But if there's one thing that helped me in learning new technologies that is, to just jump right in and build little projects. Teaching is also a widely accepted technique that will greatly help you in learning. It doesn't mean that you have to gather a huge audience that will listen to you teach something. Sometimes, the audience you need is just yourself. Write what you've learn with the intention of teaching it to your old (or future) stupid self. It's kinda weird and paradoxical I know but just roll with me on this.

With that mind, exactly a year ago, I decided to add a blog section on my personal website just for fun. I just ported my previous portfolio to Vue and I was wondering what's the most simplest way to add blogging functionality to it. I know, some people will probably frown at the idea of using a frontend framework to develop a measly portfolio website in the first place. But if your goal is to really just getting yourself up and running with a framework, I'd argue that using it to build your portfolio website is a good start. It's a simple project that will really familiarize you with the basics and will give you enough motivation to complete it.

So that's what I did. This post tells the story of how I set on adding a blog functionality on my Vue portfolio website. My thought-process, decisions, approach and what-nots.

I know from the start that I want it to be really simple. I know ButterCMS is good and all but as much as possible I don't want to introduce that much complexity, it's just a simple personal website after all. What I really want is as straightforward as hard-coding and commiting a new webpage everytime I write a new post but still simple enough that I wouldn't worry about writing in an HTML markup. That's where markdown comes in. Markdown is a really popular lightweight markup language that just fits the bill.

It's decided then. At the center of it all, what I want to accomplish is just two things:

Be able to write my blogs in markdown

Vue must be able to display these markdows as a regular html page

Essentially, to accomplish both, I just have to figure out how Vue can interpret markdown. Now, I'm not an expert with webpack, heck when I built my website years ago, I don't even know how to configure webpack myself, I was putting that off in favor of learning whatever framework I was learning at the moment. But being exposed with it for some time, I was able to pick up some concepts and context of what it does. In this case, I know that what I need is a webpack loader that can interpret markdown. Much like how
.vue
files comes out fine after passing through webpack because of
vue-loader
.

  Vue-Markdown-Loader

Literally the first thing I did after that realization was to google "vue markdown loader". And QingWei-Li's vue-markdown-loader repo comes back as the first result. The documentation is pretty straightforward, I added this code over at my
vue.config.js
:

module.exports = {
  chainWebpack(config){
    config.module.rule('md')
      .test(/\.md/)
      .use('vue-loader')
      .loader('vue-loader')
      .end()
      .use('vue-markdown-loader')
      .loader('vue-markdown-loader/lib/markdown-compiler')
      .options({
        raw: true
      })
  }
}

Like how
vue-loader
makes
.vue
files possible,
vue-markdown-loader
makes
.md
work within Vue. In essence, markdowns can now be interpreted as a Vue component. To test this, within my
components/
directory, I created the following
foo.md
:

# This is a test
## Heading 2
_lorem ipsum_ dolor __amet__

Imported it as a component on
App.vue
and used it within the template.

<template>
  <div id="app">
    <foo />
    ...
  </div>
</template>
<script>
  import Foo from '@/components/foo.md'
  export default {
    components: { Foo },
    ...
  }
</script>

Doing a quick
yarn serve
and visiting
localhost
, viola! It works!

At this point, we've verified that our Vue project can now understand and render markdown. We can now write our blogs in
.md
and just reference them wherever we like. And since it's a component there's nothing stopping us from using it as a route component, say in our
router.js
:

import Vue from 'vue'
import Router from 'vue-router'
import Home from './views/Home.vue'
import Foo from './components/foo.md'

Vue.use(Router)

export default new Router({
  mode: 'history',
  base: process.env.BASE_URL,
  routes: [
    { path: '/', name: 'home', component: Home },
    { path: '/foo', name: 'foo', component: Foo }
  ]
})

Now everytime we visit
/foo
it will render the markdown contents of our
foo.md
. Pretty neat, right? This works but wouldn't it be better if we could simplify the process of adding a new post a bit? We could create a separate file and put all blog entries in there, and that's the file that we update whenever we have a new blog post — good ol' indirection.

[
  "foo",
  "another-post",
]

We'll have to change the way we register our route components a bit. We'll have to build those routes programmatically and make use of dynamic component registration using dynamic imports:

import Vue from 'vue'
import Router from 'vue-router'
import Home from './views/Home.vue'
import Blogs from './statics/blogs.json'

Vue.use(Router)

export default new Router({
  mode: 'history',
  base: process.env.BASE_URL,
  routes: [
    { path: '/', name: 'home', component: Home },
    ...Blogs.map(entry => ({
      path: `/${entry}`,
      name: entry,
      component: () => import(`./markdowns/${entry}.md`)
    }))
  ]
})

Notice in the above code, we are assigning the markdown filename to both
path
and
name
. And for better structure, we're placing all our markdowns inside it's own directory. In this setup, we'll never have to mess with
router.js
again whenever we add a new blog post. Now, the only thing left to do is to create actual links that will point to them.

  Putting it all together

Using what we've learned, I've put things together and created a working demo on this link. You can also check out the code in this repository. There our some minor changes compared to our previous experiments.

First, let's look at the directory structure:

Notice that I've created subdirectories
2019
and
stories
which refers to different sections of the blog. This changes how we structure our routes a little but will greatly improve our overall UI.

Looking at
statics/data/blogs.json
:

{
  "2019": [
    {
      "id": "vue-markdown-blog",
      "date": "March 10, 2019",
      "title": "Creating a Simple Blog using Vue + Markdown",
      "description": "Simple and neat way to add a blogging feature to add on your website."
    }

Nevertheless, she lived a relatively normal life among other humans."
    },
    {
      "id": "simon-plumb",
      "date": "September 20, 2018",
      "title": "Simon Plumb and the Two Kind Gerbils",
      "description": "Once upon a time there was a virtuous boy called Simon Plumb. He was on the way to see his Annie Superhalk, when he decided to take a short cut through Thetford Forest..."
    }
  ]
}

Instead of an array of strings, I've converted it to an object. Each key refers to the blog section which also matches its subdirectory. The object array under each key refers to the actual blog entry. There are bunch of additional properties like
date
that we'll use in the UI but the important bit is the
id
which refers to the actual markdown component.

(Also, you can put everything in a
js
file instead of
json
. It's a matter of personal preference. Putting it in a
js
file will probably make your production build much smaller after webpack does it thing. But saving it in a
json
file under
statics
will act as a simple REST endpoint where I can issue
GET
requests from, which is useful if I end up integrating it to some other UI in the future.)

I've implemented all those additional changes to be able to display a UI like this:

The last thing we need to do is to adjust
router.js
. What it does is basically just map those blog sections into route objects. Entries under each section becomes the child of their respective route object. Basically, we'll be able to visit our blog entries using paths in this format:
${section}/${blog entry}
, eg:
2019/vue-markdown-blog
.

  return {
    path: `/${section}`,

    children
  }

export default new Router({
  mode: 'history',

  routes: [
    {
      path: '/',
      name: 'home',
      component: Home
    },
    ...blogRoutes
  ]
})

This setup introduces another key improvement to our blog: messing with the styling. Notice that
Blog.vue
acts as a wrapper layout component of our blog entries. It contains the following code:

<template>
  <div class="blog">
    <router-view />
    <router-link to="/" tag="a" class="back">&laquo; Back</router-link>
  </div>
</template>

  Styling

We now have the opportunity to style the rendered markdown however we like. The key here is to target what will eventually be displayed inside
<router-view />
using a
/deep/
selector. See the following:

<template>
  <div class="blog">
    <router-view />
    <router-link to="/" tag="a" class="back">&laquo; Back</router-link>
  </div>
</template>
<style lang="scss" scoped>
.blog {
  max-width: 50vw;
  margin: 10rem auto;
  /deep/ {
    h1 {
      font-size: 3rem;
      margin-bottom: .2rem;
      color: #42b883;
    }
    h4 {
      margin-bottom: 3rem;
      color: #35495e;
    }
  }
}
</style>

Check out markedstyle.com for more markdown styling ideas. You can even import an external markdown style just don't forget to wrap it properly within a
.blog /deep/
selector. ie:

/** external style **/
.blog /deep/ {
/** paste external markdown style here **/
}

Bit of a warning though, as much as possible one should avoid using
/deep/
because it somehow defeats the purpose of
scoped
and it's been deprecated by Chrome. Vue-loader just still supports it, that's why it works. But I'd argue that this is one those cases where it's useful. We don't want to pollute the global css scope so we'd like to contain styling within
Blog.vue
's children so we use
scoped
and
/deep/
together. (Although, if someone more knowledgeable has a better solution for this I'll gladly take it.)

And that's it! A simple blogging feature for your website without using any other 3rd-party service. Just plain and simple vue.

  Further Improvements

If you want to take it a step further, you can add page metas using all those additional fields inside blog entries,
date
,
title
,
description
, etc. This would play nicely if you've implemented some sort of social sharing as well. You can check out my website to see this in action: www.josephharveyangeles.com

EDIT (2020): I've created an updated version of the app that works offline using Quasar v1. You can check out the app over here. Also, it's open-source! If you want to check out how I usually structure my Quasar project, you can check it out here. I've further discussed the rationale of how it was built during the first Quasar Convention if you're interested.

This article was originally posted on my blog and was also featured on Quasar's official medium publication.

From the greek word “chronos" which means “time", and the latin “curos", which means “to attend", Chronocross is a Todo app that integrates other productivity techniques: The Pomodoro Technique and Eisenhower Matrix, into one cohesive workflow.

In a nutshell, Chronocross is really just a simple tool that I built to complement my workflow. I'm a huge productivity geek. I was hooked on crossing things off a list. I use Cirillo's Pomodoro Technique to manage procrastination and maintain my focus.

The Pomodoro Technique® is a time management method that uses a timer to break down your work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length separated by short breaks. — Wikipedia

Coupled with another productivity technique, Eisenhower Matrix to help me prioritize which task should be worked on first thing in the morning and which should be last. My every working day felt like total bliss.

Eventually, moving between a todo app, a separate Pomodoro app, and a spreadsheet for my Eisenhower box felt lacking. It felt like it was begging me to integrate them all together into one cohesive app. At this point, I couldn’t really call myself a software developer if I didn’t immediately answer to the calling.

Originally, Chronocross was built using Angular. I was learning Angular back then and building an app using it seems like a good practice. But I just did not want to make another web app, because I giving myself a chance to procrastinate by switching and fooling around on other sites would drop my productivity. I decided to use Electron and develop it as a desktop application.

This sounded good at the time, but learning Angular and Electron along with my day-job made it really difficult to accomplish. I was working as a Java developer back then and this was my first time coming back to front-end after the whole JavaScript revolution. I learned the basics: HTML, CSS, JQuery and JavaScript back at the university. But I was in for a surprise. Configuring Electron to work with Angular was a nightmare to my unacquainted mind. Modify tsconfig? and Webpack? Loaders? Install NPM? What? Javascript can access the I/O now? Nodejs?

I did eventually manage to make it work (somehow). It took me a really long time and countless frustrations to do it; I almost dropped it to use Java and Swing and not bother learning something new that year. Halfway through my feature list I ended up shelving my little pet project.

Almost a year later, I was working at a different company as a Full-Stack Engineer, whatever that means (I think it means: I know Java and a little bit of HTML), using Angular in the front-end. I started to get that itch of wanting to learn new stuff again. I found myself at the doorsteps of the Vue ecosystem. I knew about Vue even back when I was first learning Angular but since Angular was the company’s choice of framework, I just shrugged it off. IMHO, Vue. Is. Pretty. Freaking. Awesome. The experience was love-at-first-vue-instance.

  Quasar Framework

After porting my previous Angular portfolio website to Vue, I ventured farther in the Vue ecosystem's doorsteps and found myself along the valleys of Quasar Framework. I read the docs. And. It. Was. Just. Soooo. good.

Quasar is a framework that lets you build responsive Single-Page Apps, Server-side Rendered apps, Progressive Web Apps, Hybrid Mobile apps and Electron apps, all using the same codebase. Not only that it has a built-in UI library too that comes with Material and IOS theme. This is like a dream. All you ever need to worry about is build your idea, if you do it right, in just a single command you can build your project for other platforms. How awesome is that? I know some people will probably raise an eyebrow when they hear "hybrid Cordova and Electron apps". But in my opinion, Quasar does the job for 90% of the use cases maybe even more. And it's still improving every day.

  Chronocross 2.0

I took the opportunity of learning Quasar by getting back at building Chronocross. I decided to build it as a mobile app this time. I wanted to at least have a similar experience of leaving your monitor and keyboard to actually wind up an actual pomodoro or a kitchen timer.

I scrapped my previous designs and started out fresh. For this little app, I decided that I would implement four major features represented by separate tabs: The Pomodoro Tab, Tasks tab, Eisenhower Box tab and the Reports tab.

The Pomodoro tab is a pretty regular timer that you can play, pause, stop and restart. Sprint indicators at the top, A 5 minutes break sprint comes after every 25-minute work sprint. The last break sprint, which I call the long break, is 15 minutes. Of course, these sprint duration could always be tweaked on the settings but those were the traditional duration so I made them default.

The second tab contains the Tasks list. Here you’ll find your tasks. Listed as cards, each card contains some basic info at first glance: task name, priority, and a progress bar that represents the time spent work on the task versus its estimate. There’s a collapsible that contains other information such as the actual estimated time, current progress and a short description. There’s also a list of subtasks in case you feel like breaking the main task into chunks.

Tapping a task selects it and the previous little FAB turns to an expandable FAB that contains other options. Delete, Edit, Reset (resets the progress back to 0), Mark as done and play. Hitting the play button will run the Pomodoro timer on the selected task, which means all of your work sprint will be recorded on the currently selected task. This will be very useful for tracking. The timer tab can still be used independently if there is no selected task (or you unselect a current task by tapping it again), it will just function as a regular pomodoro timer. To prevent the records from getting corrupted, I disabled the select functionality if the timer is currently active — but it is still possible to check the details of the other tasks.

I used Firebase's real-time database to store all the tasks and progress time records, which is also a pretty convenient service. There's a plugin especially made for vue to make it even more convenient which is called Vuefire. And of course, I used it together with FirebaseAuth for login and signup.

I created four cards that represents each Eisenhower quadrant for the third tab. A preview of the tasks was placed under each of the quadrant’s label. These are determined by the priority you chose when creating a task back in the task tab. A high priority task will automatically be categorized as Urgent and Important task.

Expanding a quadrant will list all the current tasks categorized under it. If you felt like the priority has changed, you can move it to a different quadrant. The same thing could be achieved if you edit the priority back at the tasks tab. But doing so here frames it in an Eisenhower matrix perspective.

Lastly the final tab is the reports. As a Software Engineer, part of the job entails some paperwork (I bet you didn't expect that), but not the traditional paperwork most desk jobs has. Our version of paperwork has something to do with metrics, task tracking, burndown charts, and other stuff — pretty boring stuff if you're not the manager or the scrum master and you really just don’t care about how fast you’re going, you just want to write code and go home. Let’s admit it though, logging hours on your tasks is pretty boring. It takes away from your momentum when you’re deep in that coding frenzy, implementing features one after another, fixing bugs as fast as you gulp that coffee. Much of the inspiration for this simple app is solely for treating this case. At the end of the day or week, I wanted to see what tasks I’ve worked on for the time period and how long I spent working on them.

All that’s left to do now is to update those Jira cards at the end of day and my scrum master would be very happy. If ever I forgot to log my work hours on a day, I could still filter the date and choose from the really simple awesome datepicker that quasar provided.

Sometimes, there are tasks that took longer than a day to finish. Maybe it was big or there were other tasks that needed your attention that you had to park the current task you're working on — I added a task view for that scenario. It's funny how trivial this report charts feature is but I ended up liking it the most.

I also implemented other features like:

Keep awake, prevents your screen from sleeping so you can always see the timer.

Background persist, lets you run the app in the background.

Local push notifications, displays a notification when the timer’s up when the app is running on the background.

Perpetual full screen, I just felt like it feels more “focus-inducing” when the app is in full screen.

To really cap this project off, I signed up for a google developer account in order to publish the app on Google Playstore. You had to pay a $25 one-off registration fee but you can publish as much apps as you like afterwards. It's not that bad of a deal. Publishing the app in google play is pretty straightforward, you fill out all the necessary information upload your APK and then you're done. (Click this link for more information about rolling out a release) You had to wait for a couple of hours before the app becomes visible on the playstore.

Before uploading the APK, I had to make sure it's signed and zip aligned first. Android requires that all APKs be digitally signed with a certificate before they can be installed. After building my Quasar app using
quasar build -m cordova
the resulting
.apk
will be available on the appropriate release folder (
project-dir/src-cordova/platforms/android/app/build/outputs/apk/release
). I generated my private key using keytool and then used
jarsigner
to sign the package.
apksigner
could also be used to achieve the same results. After successfully signing my APK, it's also required to zip align the package or Google Play console will throw an error. I used
zipalign
to accomplish this. (If you plan on using
apksigner
, it invalidates the package if you make further changes to the APK, therefore, you must use zipalign before signing the package). More information about app signing here.

In just a few hours, Chronocross became visible in the playstore. I informed some of my friends who are also interested with Pomodoro and productivity stuff and gave them the link.

I don't really expect it to perform well at the Playstore, I'm just satisfied that I can cross Chronocross out of my unfinished projects list. There are probably tons of improvements that could still be done. I could even generate an electron app out of it, add a report extraction and automate it directly straight to Jira or something. I might update it from time to time if I feel like it, or if some people also found it useful and wanted some more features.

Overall, I'm quite happy with the experience and I'll probably continue building random apps using Quasar. After all, one of the joys of programming is not always about creating the next successful product. Sometimes, it's about building something that solves one of those small problems that you encounter daily.

Learning JavaScript Design Patterns

I started picking up JavaScript again months ago. I created a repo for some notes that I created while learning Design Patterns in the context of JavaScript. I came from a more strongly-typed language like Java and C, now working on JavaScript I can't easily wrapped my head around applying the same general concepts that I'm used to in Java directly in JavaScript.

It's an entire paradigm shift that I might need some time getting used to, but I can feel the inner cogs of my comprehension clicking and slowly moving. I'm waiting for that day where the final click would happen and everything would just come naturally to me.

My general strategy was to pick up a book (I'm using this one Learning JavaScript Design Patterns by Addy Osmani) and somewhat expound on the explanations, add more examples that I find suiting, filling the gaps. If you guys are interested feel free to watch it here's the link of the repo: despa.js. I'll be updating it probably everyday. My goal is to learn one pattern a day.
