I was selected as an intern in the December 2022 internship round. During the Contribution stage I contributed to two open source communities ODK-X and MBOALAB. I was selected as an intern with MBOALAB 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉.

MboaLab is an open and collaborative space located in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The aim of MboaLab is to catalyse sustainable local development and improve people’s living conditions through open science. MBOALAB

MboaLab is an open and collaborative space located in the village of Mefou-Assi, Yaoundé, Cameroon. The word “Mboa” has different meanings in native Cameroonian languages: in Matakam, it means “new”; in Ewondo, it means “unique”; in Duala, it means “village”. Literally translated, MboaLab is a unifying village dedicated to creation; even better, it is a laboratory for social innovation, community education, collaboration and mediation at the service of the community.

The Project I was selected for needs a combination of android development and machine learning skillset, Building a digital stethoscope android application. I am very passionate about Machine learning and had keen interest in it, To achieve the goal of the internship, I had to pick up so machine learning resources to build a model that predicts common heart diseases and state of the heart based on the heartbeat sound gotten from their android device.

A team of 3 interns and 2 mentors, started off the journey by viewing sample applications and products, Deliberated on how to build a product that is adaptable and affordable for common African man. The first two weeks I was tasked with researching about the model. Fun thing about software development; ask and you shall be directed, I asked a lot of questions which aided in my research also dedicated time to learning new skills
I got sample recorded heartbeats from kaggle, looked into learning pytorch to develop the model.

I would drop my pen here, and pick up later but I am currently enjoying open source, my journey into #MEDTECH and also happy to meet new people and ideas.

EVERYONE STRUGGLES

A journey without struggle is no journey at all, The hardest step to take in a journey is always the first. commitment, readiness to learn and being opened to opinion should see one through the journey.

It has been 3 weeks being an intern with Mboalab in the Outreachy Internship programme.

As a Intern, I find myself overwhelmed most of the time. With the ever-changing technologies and the fast-paced modern world, I tend to pass through some challenges.
From the need to balance work and life and to advance in your career as a programmer, sometimes I think a lot is vested on my chest. Having to learn new Technologies and Learning new Things.

Nobody is an expert, but learning, practicing, and growing is what we can do. So I, with my fellow interns decided to accept this challenge and started learning about ML after discussing it with mentors, We are building a digital stethoscope android application. The greatest tool as a programmer is knowing the question to ask and when to ask the question to prevent time wasting. Everyone struggles but asking for help and asking the right question goes along way to solving different issues.

My experience as an Outreachy Intern in a week at Mboalab.

Hi everyone, my name is Abdul-wadud Musa, and I recently got accepted for December 2022 to March 2023 Outreachy internship round.

I am a certified Android Developer from Nigeria who loves writing codes and developing mobile application. it has always been a wish to contribute to open source libraries/applications

On the 22nd of November 2022,I got accepted as an intern with Mboalab Developing an android application [Digital stethoscope]for December to March Outreachy internship round. I would be collaborating with other interns to achieve and build the application.

Some of My Core values are Learning, Consistency, Challenge and growth.

I am always interested in Learning something new, Learn from others and new ways same thing can be achieved. This always push me to collaborate with various individuals with like minds to see their approach of solving a problem and learn massively from various individuals.

Consistency removes uncertainty and leads to trust. Trust, in turn, leads to influence

Consistency: Conformity in the application of something, typically that which is necessary for the sake of logic, accuracy, or fairness (definition from Google Dictionary).

It's not what we do once that shapes our lives.It's what we do consistently [Anthony Robbins].

Challenge and growth supplementary to the values mentioned above, Learning something new and being consistent must be complemented with challenge which makes you put into practice what you have learnt over time, task your brain and make research on ways to do things outside your comfort zone, making you gain experience and expertise in the field(Growth) and you can measure your growth.

Outreachy is a three-month paid and remote internship program conducted twice a year from May to August and December to March. It provides internships to people subject to systemic bias and impacted by underrepresentation in the technical industry where they are living.

I applied to Outreachy to achieve my aim of contributing to open source project and also learn from other individuals, The first week of the internship has been great and i look forward to learn more and collaborate with my fellow interns.
