The fatality rate reported in our Covid-19 structure, SG Moscati Hospital of Taranto province in Italy, was higher in aged male people with preexisting chronic pulmonary disease (COPD), patients with cancer and preexisting cardio-vascular diseases (CVD). We assumed a different theoretical position to clarify the higher mortality event seen among those patients that was not as obvious as it appeared, we thus offered different pathophysiological picture that could help to newly solutions in therapy and prevention.
Cannabis and its extracts are now being explored due to their huge health benefits. Although, the effect they elicit, whether on humans or rodents, may vary based on the age of the animal/subject and or the time in which the extract is administered. However, several debates exist concerning the various medical applications of these compounds. Nonetheless, their applicability as therapeutics should not be clouded based on their perceived negative biological actions.

Articles from reliable databases such as Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Ovid were searched. Specific search methods were employed using multiple keywords ''Medicinal Cannabis; endocannabinoid system; cannabinoids receptors; cannabinoids and cognition; brain disorders; neurodegenerative diseases''. For the inclusion/exclusion criteria, only relevant articles related to medicinal Cannabis and its various compounds were considered.

The current review highlights the role, effects, and involvement of Cannabis, cannabinoids, anutic applications.Osteoarthritis (OA), characterized by the degeneration and destruction of articular cartilage, is one of the most significant public health issues around the world. In the course of OA, inflammatory response is an important factor leading to cartilage destruction and exacerbation of symptoms. KU-55933 concentration The low immunogenicity, multi-directional differentiation and high portability properties make bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) ideal seed cells for OA. Here, we review recent literature relating to the application of BMSCs for OA cell therapy and consider the following aspects migration and homing of BMSCs, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of BMSCs, anti-fibrotic effects of BMSCs, the application of biological scaffolds in cartilage regeneration by BMSCs and chondrogenic differentiation of BMSCs. Injecting BMSCs into joints with an inflammatory environment may increase the risk of osteoproliferation and ectopic calcification in patients. Further evidence and studies are needed to ensure the improvement and maintenance of the intraarticular environment for cartilage repair and regeneration.
The effectiveness of Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) in demonstrating functional changes in the tumor in determining the response to treatment after radiosurgery in patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS) is not clear yet.

The study aimed to determine the change total in tumor volume (TTV) in terms of radiological response in patients who had VS and were treated with radiosurgery and investigate the relationship between the TTV, follow-up times and DTI parameters.

Thirty-one patients were assessed using DTI and MRI. TTV, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and fractional anisotropy (FA) were calculated. Patients were divided into tree groups those who responded to the treatment (group 1) (n=11), who did not (group 0) (n=9) and who remained stable (group 2) (n=11).

The mean duration of follow-up was 28.81±14 months. ADC values increased in patients with VS after radiosurgery (p=0.004). There was no statistical difference in the FA values. A significant reduction in TTV after radiosurgery was detected in group 1 (p=0.003). ADC values increased significantly after radiosurgery in group 2 (p=0.04). Although there were no significant differences, ADC values after radiosurgery increased in group 1 and group 0.

ADC values continuously increase due to radiation damage in the period before the tumor volume shrinks after radiosurgery. We think that it is not appropriate to diagnose inadequate treatment or progression only when TTV is evaluated in terms of response to treatment in the early period after radiosurgery.
Interpretation of medical images for the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases from high-dimensional and heterogeneous data remains a key challenge in transforming healthcare. In the last few years, both supervised and unsupervised deep learning achieved promising results in the area of medical image analysis. Several reviews on supervised deep learning are published, but hardly any rigorous review on unsupervised deep learning for medical image analysis is available.

The objective of this review is to systematically present various unsupervised deep learning models, tools, and benchmark datasets applied to medical image analysis. Some of the discussed models are autoencoders and its other variants, Restricted Boltzmann machines (RBM), Deep belief networks (DBN), Deep Boltzmann machine (DBM), and Generative adversarial network (GAN). Further, future research opportunities and challenges of unsupervised deep learning techniques for medical image analysis are also discussed.

Currently, interpretatioical image analysis, each of them having certain pros and cons. Since human supervisions are not always available or inadequate or biased, therefore, unsupervised learning algorithms give a big hope with lots of advantages for biomedical image analysis.
Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) can provide more improved images of renal blood flow and much more information of both macro- and microcirculation of the kidney as comparing to Doppler US.

To investigate the usefulness of CEUS by analyzing differences in perfusion-related parameters among the three chronic kidney disease (CKD) subgroups and the control group.

Thirty-eight patients with CKD and 21 controls who were age matched (20-49 years) and included. Included CKD patients were stratified into three groups according to their eGFR group I, eGFR ≥ 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 (GFR category I and II); group II, 30 ml/min/1.73 m2 ≤ eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 (GFR category III); and group III, eGFR < 30 ml/min/1.73 m2 (GFR category IV and V). Comparisons with the controls (eGFR > 90 ml/min/1.73 m2 ) were performed. Real-time and dynamic renal cortex imaging was performed using CEUS. Time-intensity curves and several bolus model quantitative perfusion parameters were created using the VueBox® quantification software.KU-55933 concentration

Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (uUTI) is very common among women in primary care. The risk of developing pyelonephritis remains low after uUTI, nonetheless, empiric antibiotic therapy is frequently prescribed for symptomatic purposes. This may lead to adverse effects and antibiotic resistance. Furthermore, patients may express the will to limit the use of antibiotics. Some European countries recommend discussing a delayed prescription with the patient and developing a shared decision. The aim of this study is to create a patient decision aid (PtDA) used in primary care settings to make a shared decision between practitioners and women about whether or not to treat uUTI with antibiotics.

We followed the steps recommended by the International Patient Decision Aids Standards, with a scoping phase, a design phase (including focus groups and literature review), and an alpha-testing phase. A steering group, made of patients and physicians, met throughout the study to develop a prototype PtDA.

The inforon on the use of antibiotic in uUTI. It needs to be validated in a beta-testing phase, with complementary advice from peers, and then tested in a clinical study comparing its use with the systematic prescription approach.
Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a serious neurological complication of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) after revascularization. The majority of AIS patients do not have atrial fibrillation (AF) which could also develop into HT. In this study, we aimed to explore whether hemostasis parameters are risk factors of HT in non-AF patients.

We consecutively enrolled 285 AIS patients with HT. Meanwhile, age- and sex-matched 285 AIS patients without HT were included. The diagnosis of HT was determined by brain CT or MRI during hospitalization. All patients were divided into two subgroups based on the presence of AF and explore the differences between the two subgroups. buy Daurisoline Blood samples were obtained within 24 h of admission, and all patients were evenly classified into three tertiles according to platelet counts (PLT) levels.

In this study, we found the first PLT tertile (OR = 3.509, 95%CI = 1.268-9.711, P = 0.016) was independently associated with HT in non-AF patients, taking the third tertile as a reference. Meanents. Additionally, MPV and FIB levels were significantly associated with unfavorable long-term outcomes in non-AF HT patients. Our study showed that hemostasis functions at admission may be beneficial for clinicians to recognize patients with a high risk of HT at an early stage and improve unfavorable long-term outcomes in non-AF patients.
Metabolic syndrome (MS) can promote the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective of this study was to examine the association of MS and its components with CVD, to further prevent and control CVD in Kazakhs.

In the cohort study, a total of 2644 participants completed the baseline survey between April 2010 and December 2012.The follow-up survey was conducted from April 2016 to December 2016 and was completed by 2286 participants (86.46% follow-up rate). Cox regression was used to evaluate the association of each component and the number of combinations of MS components on the development of CVD.

A total of 278 CVD patients were enrolled from rural residents of Xinjiang. The average age of the MS and non-MS groups was 46.33 and 38.71 years, respectively. Independent associations with CVD were found for elevated blood pressure (BP) (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) [aHR] = 1.50,95%confidence interval [CI] 1.08-2.08), elevated waist circumference (WC) (aHR = 1.60, 95%CI 1.19-2.15), and elevated triglycerides (TG) (aHR = 1.44, 95%CI 1.04-2.01). Participants with one to 5 MS components had an increased HR for developing CVD, from 1.82to 8.59 (P for trend < 0.001), compared with those with no MS components. The risk of developing CVD increased when TG and WC coexisted (aHR = 2.16, 95%CI 1.54-3.04)), when TG and BP coexisted ((aHR = 1.92, 95%CI 1.32-2.79), and when WC and BP coexisted (aHR = 1.93, 95%CI 1.33-2.82)). However, no significant interactions were found between BP, WC, and TG.

Elevations of BP, WC, and TG were independent risk factors for CVD in Kazakhs. Control of these factors is important to prevent CVD in this population.
Adenocarcinoma in Esophagogastric Junction (AEG) is a severe gastrointestinal malignancy with a unique clinicopathological feature. Hence, we aimed to develop a competing risk nomogram for predicting survival for AEG patients and compared it with new 8th traditional tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system.

Based on data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database of AEG patients between 2004 and 2010, we used univariate and multivariate analysis to filter clinical factors and then built a competing risk nomogram to predict AEG cause-specific survival. We then measured the clinical accuracy by comparing them to the 8th TNM stage with a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, Brier score, and Decision Curve Analysis (DCA). External validation was performed in 273 patients from China National Cancer Center.

A total of 1755 patients were included in this study. The nomogram was based on five variables Number of examined lymph nodes, grade, invasion, metastatic LNs, and age. The results of the nomogram was greater than traditional TNM staging with ROC curve (1-year AUC 0.747 vs. 0.641, 3-year AUC 0.761 vs. 0.679, 5-year AUC 0.759 vs. 0.682, 7-year AUC 0.749 vs. 0.673, P < 0.001), Brier score (3-year 0.198 vs. 0.217, P = 0.012; 5-year 0.198 vs. 0.216, P = 0.008; 7-year 0.199 vs. 0.215, P = 0.014) and DCA. In external validation, the nomogram also showed better diagnostic value than traditional TNM staging and great prediction accuracy.

We developed and validated a novel nomogram and risk stratification system integrating clinicopathological characteristics for AEG patients. The model showed superior prediction ability for AEG patients than traditional TNM classification.

Since 2008, oral propranolol has evolved as the first-line therapy for infantile hemangiomas (IHs). Meanwhile, oral atenolol gradually shows comparative effectiveness versus oral propranolol with few side effects. Here, we conducted a mobile internal survey among a group of Chinese clinicians about how they choose the dosage, dose regimen, and dose escalation methods of propranolol and atenolol for the treatment of IH.A mobile-ready internal survey on the application of oral propranolol and oral atenolol for IH in mainland China was performed and distributed to 333 potential clinicians from different levels of healthcare institutions in mainland China. Eighty-one doctors responded to the survey. All the respondents had the experience of treating IH with oral propranolol and 32 had the experience with oral atenolol. Most of the doctors from tertiary hospitals chose 2 mg/kg/d twice daily, while most of those with the experience of propranolol from private hospitals chose 1 mg/kg/d once daily. More doctors fromg IH with oral propranolol and 32 had the experience with oral atenolol. Most of the doctors from tertiary hospitals chose 2 mg/kg/d twice daily, while most of those with the experience of propranolol from private hospitals chose 1 mg/kg/d once daily. More doctors from tertiary hospitals had the experience of atenolol than those from private hospitals.Oral atenolol has become another medication intervention option for IH in mainland China. This survey is helpful to standardize and develop a guideline of oral atenolol therapy for IH.
There is no established protocol regarding the timing of administration of antiemetics in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this study was to determine whether preoperative, rather than postoperative administration of an antiemetic could reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in patients undergoing TKA, and whether there was a difference in postoperative pain, patient satisfaction and complications after TKA between the 2 different administration times. The included patients (N = 101) either received intravenous administration of the ramosetron 1 hour before surgery (N = 50) or at the end of surgery (N = 51) consecutively order. The incidence of PONV and the frequency of rescue medicine use were recorded until 48 hours postoperatively. The severity of postoperative pain and patient satisfaction were assessed using the visual analogue scale. The incidence of complications associated with use of antiemetic was assessed.Preoperative administration of ramosetron did not dpies, timing of administration of pre-emptive antiemetic did not have significant effect on PONV.
To identify the natural changes of traumatic vertebral compression fractures during the first six months in patients visiting for disability certificates after conservative treatment.Data of patients who visited the rehabilitation medicine department of a university hospital for disability certificates concerning traumatic vertebral compression fractures from 2015 to 2018 were reviewed. Those who visited 180 to 210 days after injuries were included, and those who received invasive procedures for compression fractures were excluded. The anterior and posterior heights, local kyphotic angle of compression fractures, and upper and lower vertebrae on initial and follow-up images were measured and compared. Compression ratio was calculated by vertebral body compression ratio and anterior vertebral body compression percentage. Thoracic and lumbar traumatic fractures were also compared.Among 110 patients, 61 patients met the criteria. After six months, the anterior height of compression fractures decreased more thaded. After six months, the anterior height of compression fractures decreased more than 4 mm, which implies the development of new compression fractures. The compression ratio and local kyphotic angle increased significantly without affecting the upper and lower vertebrae. Thoracic and lumbar compression fractures showed similar changes.Traumatic vertebral compression fractures change significantly during the first six months. This study could warrant 6 months of waiting for issuance of disability certificates for patients with traumatic vertebral compression fractures.
Although the importance of quadriceps femoris function was reported previously, little is known about volume-related factors and their effects on clinical outcomes after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We sought to determine whether there was a bilateral difference in vastus medialis muscle volume measured on single-photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) in patients who underwent unilateral TKA. We also aimed to determine whether vastus medialis volume was related to osteoarthritis (OA) severity or scintigraphic uptake degree around the knee joint on SPECT-CT. And finally, we attempted to investigate the factors, such as vastus medialis volume and scintigraphic uptake degree, associated with the functional outcomes of TKA.This retrospective study included 50 patients (41 female, 9 male) undergone unilateral TKA due to primary OA. The maximal cross-sectional area of the vastus medialis was measured on axial SPECT-CT images. Scintigraphic uptake degrees and Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) gcle volume and scintigraphic uptake on SPECT-CT and WOMAC index was analyzed. The amount of muscle volume measured on SPECT-CT was smaller in operated limb in patients who underwent unilateral TKA. Preoperative vastus medialis muscle volume was not related to preoperative OA severity measured on conventional radiographs and scintigraphic uptake on SPECT-CT. However, a decreased vastus medialis muscle volume was related to worse clinical outcomes after TKA (P = .045), whereas the degree of scintigraphic uptake on SPECT-CT was not associated with postoperative clinical outcomes.Muscle volume of vastus medialis was decreased in the operated knee than in the nonoperated knee, and that was correlated with worse postoperative results. selleckchem Even if the preoperative volume of vastus medialis were not related to OA severity on conventional radiographs and scintigraphic uptake on SPECT-CT, preservation and improvement of the muscle mass of the knee undergoing TKA is important.selleckchem

BACKGROUND BTH1677 is a beta-glucan pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) being evaluated as a novel immunotherapy of cancer. We previously described that the presence of antibodies against beta-glucan (ABA) in serum is necessary for BTH1677 antitumoral activity. We hypothesized that infusion of immunoglobulin can reinstate responses to BTH1677 in individuals with low ABA levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS We report two single-patient studies one in a patient with metastatic colorectal cancer who received BTH1677, combined with tumor targeting antibody cetuximab; and a second in a patient with metastatic neuroendocrine tumor who received BTH1677 combined with immune checkpoint inhibitor pembrolizumab. RESULTS The patients had low serum titers of ABA and low innate immune effector functionality induced by BTH1677. Addition of intravenous immunoglobulins restored innate immune activity of BTH1677 and induced clinically meaningful anti-tumoral activity, with long-term disease control. CONCLUSION Infusion of immunoglobulin can restore activity of BTH1677 in individuals with low serum ABA level. BACKGROUND/AIM Radiotherapy for soft tissue sarcomas (STS) of the hand is thought to be associated with poor function. The aim of this study was to compare the long-term functional outcome in patients with and without radiotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS At long-term follow-up (mean 10±5 years), 33 (13 males, 20 female) patients, were alive for review. The mean patient age at surgery was 33±17 years and 13 (39%) patients received radiotherapy (mean dose 55±6 Gy). RESULTS Postoperatively, the mean QuickDASH and MSTS93 were 7±8 and 92±8%, respectively. Comparing patients with and without radiotherapy, there was no difference (p>0.05) between the mean QuickDASH (5±5 vs. 8±9) or MSTS93 (93±9% vs. 91±8%). Surgical complication occurred more commonly in patients with radiotherapy (46% vs. 15%, p=0.10). CONCLUSION The use of radiotherapy was associated with a higher rate of complications, however, was not associated with a worse long-term functional outcome in patients with hand STS. BACKGROUND/AIM We have previously found elevated levels of endoglin (CD105) in the prostate cancer (PC) tissue of men with poor prognosis, compared to men with indolent disease. Herein, we examined whether plasma levels of the soluble form of CD105 (sCD105) differ according to the PC grade at diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS We measured sCD105 in 73 subjects with biopsy-confirmed PC at the Durham, North Carolina, Veteran Affairs Health System. The association between sCD105 and intermediate/high-grade PC risk [Gleason Group (GG) 2-5 vs. 1] was examined using regression models. RESULTS Of 73 men, 27 had low-grade PC and 46 high-grade PC. Higher GG was linked to lower sCD105 (GG1 6938 pg/ml, GG2-3 6150 pg/ml, GG4-5 5554 pg/ml; p=0.012). On multivariable analysis, lower sCD105 was associated with increased high-grade PC risk (ORper 1000 units=1.33, p=0.028). CONCLUSION Lower sCD105 levels were associated with intermediate and high-risk PC. Further investigation is warranted in a larger PC cohort. BACKGROUND/AIM Resistance to chemotherapeutic agents is the main cause of reduced survival in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The Hedgehog (HH) pathway has been shown to be crucial in cell development and survival. Activated in several types of cancer it might be a potent bypass mechanism mediating chemotherapy resistance. MATERIALS AND METHODS HCC827 NSCLC cells were treated with sub-lethal doses of pemetrexed to produce pemetrexed resistance. RT-qPCR was performed to measure gene expression of HH pathway proteins. A cell growth assay was used to measure the impact of the HH-inhibitor Gant61 in naïve and chemoresistant cell lines. RESULTS Pemetrexed resistant cells showed significantly increased expression of HH signaling genes (GLI1, GLI2, GLI3, PTCH1, SHH). Supporting these results, pemetrexed resistant cells treated with the HH inhibitor Gant61 showed reduced proliferation compared to naïve cells. CONCLUSION HH pathway may play an important role in mediating pemetrexed resistance in NSCLC cells. Blocking the HH pathway may be a potential option to overcome this resistance. BACKGROUND/AIM Although numerous cytokines influence proliferation and progression of multiple myeloma (MM), a relevant action in the onset of the disease also seems to be played by the oxidative state. PATIENTS AND METHODS In the present study we evaluated the concentrations of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and soluble receptor of advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) in patients with MM, assessing the existing variations with respect to a control group and the possible existence of correlations between these molecules and the biological variables or the presence of a correlation between IL-8 and sRAGE. The study was conducted on 33 patients affected by MM compared to 39 healthy subjects. RESULTS IL-8 and sRAGE levels were significantly higher in MM patients compared to healthy subjects. sRAGE and IL-8 evidence no significant linear correlation. Furthermore, IL-8 was significantly increased in both sexes, but we found a slight variation for females compared to males. CONCLUSION IL-8 could play an important role in the onset of MM and the progression of bone disease, while the increased sRAGE values would seem to have a protective action in MM patients. Further studies on animal models may clarify the real impact of introducing modulation of IL-8 and sRAGE levels. BACKGROUND/AIM Polyamines are important for the growth of eukaryotic cells. At high levels, they promote proliferation, invasion and migration of tumour cells. Polyamine metabolism is an important new target for anticancer therapy. Some polyamine analogues can have an inhibitory effect on tumour cells. The aim of this study was to explore the potential of certain butylated derivatives of propanediamine for prostate cancer chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Human prostate cancer cells, LNCaP, were used for the evaluation of the antiproliferative activity of polyamine analogs and their influence on spermine oxidase. RESULTS Tetrabutyl propanediamine and two new polyamine analogues inhibited the growth of LNCaP cells. Selleck Acalabrutinib At the same time, a strong activation of spermine oxidase was observed. CONCLUSION The investigated compounds demonstrated their potential value in the therapy of human prostate cancer. Their effect might be attributed to the activation of the polyamine catabolic pathway.Selleck Acalabrutinib

Lip repositioning is a modality to address concerns of affected patients. The aim of this review was to investigate the scientific evidence on outcomes and long-term stability of lip repositioning surgery with or without myotomy. The electronic search was conducted in three databases MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library up to October 2019. see more No publication status, language, or time restrictions were applied. The electronic search was complemented by a manual search of the reference lists. Three hundred thirty-eight studies were screened by title, and 16 articles remained for data extraction. The included studies assessed the lip repositioning procedure in 144 patients aged between 15-59 years (134 females and 10 males). Based on the available data, lip repositioning with myotomy/muscle containment can be a successful treatment for minor discrepancies in gingival display in selected cases. However, further well-organized controlled clinical trials are recommended to derive a conclusion about the long-term stability compared with other alternatives. This is a retrospective analysis of clinical characteristics of children with inborn errors of immunity who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). Although the mean age at diagnosis was 24.4 months, it was 51.9 months at HSCT. There is an urgent need to improve awareness, expand donor registries and initiate newborn screening for inborn errors or immunity.Neonatal data regarding SARS-CoV-2 is sparse from India. On review of hospital records from April- August, 2020, 18/423 (4.25%) neonates were SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR positive. 15 (83.3%) neonates recovered and 3 (16.6%) succumbed. Only 50% of the positive babies had positive mothers/ caretakers, a contact could not be traced in others. This 1-year follow-up study was conducted on 21 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. We found reduction in glycosylated hemoglobin from 10.5% to 8.1%, and maintenance of BMI z-scores from 3.9 to 3.8. Majority of the patients could be weaned-off from insulin. Heterogeneous presentation, frequent co-morbidities and complications, and familial clustering were observed.X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) is a primary disorder of humoral immunity characterized by Bruton tyrosine kinase gene mutations resulting in a primary antibody deficiency. While an intact T-cell function largely protects against majority of viral infections, enteroviruses are notorious for infecting these patients due to impaired mucosal immunity. Although the incidence of enteroviral meningoencephalitis in XLA is only 1-5%, yet the mortality is quite high. A typical presentation of enteroviral encephalitis in XLA is a subacute to chronic nervous system infection. A progressive loss of motor and cognitive milestones, spastic quadriplegia, coma, and death are common presentations. The histopathological features reflect gliosis, gradual neuronal loss, neuronophagia, and microglial proliferation. We describe the clinical and brain histopathological findings in a 2-year-old boy with XLA and progressive encephalitis, possibly due to an enteroviral infection.
We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to compare the efficacy and safety of nine non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in treating patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of NSAIDs for the treatment in children with JIA were searched systematically by using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library for available literature up to January 1, 2019. Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to combine direct and indirect evidence on treatment effectiveness and safety.

Eight eligible RCTs involving 1112 patients with JIA were identified, addressing 9 interventions. The ranking probability plot based on the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) indicated that celecoxib (6 mg/kg twice-a-day) had the highest probability of being most effective (SUCRA = 76.4%) among four NSAIDs (celecoxib, rofecoxib, meloxicam, and naproxen). Also, rofecoxib (0.3 mg/kg once-a-day) and piroxicam demonstrated a higher probability of safety in treating children with JIA (SUCRA = 33.0% and 35.5%, respectively), compared with other interventions.

The quality of available evidence limits the formation of powerful conclusions regarding the comparative efficacy or safety of NSAIDs used to treat JIA.
To develop standard recommendations for skin care in neonates, infants and children to aid the pediatrician to provide quality skin care to infants and children.

Though skin is the largest organ in the body with vital functions, skin care in children especially in newborns and infants, is not given the due attention that is required. There is a need for evidence-based recommendations for the care of skin of newborn babies and infants in India.

A committee was formed under the auspices of Indian Academy of Pediatrics in August, 2018 for preparing guidelines on pediatric skin care. Three meetings were held during which we reviewed the existing guidelines/ recommendations/review articles and held detailed discussions, to arrive at recommendations that will help to fill up the knowledge gaps in current practice in India. The initial draft of the manuscript based on the available evidence and experience, was sent to all members for their inputs, after which it was finalized.

Vernix caseosa should not be reDuration of bath should not exceed 5-10 minutes. Liquid cleanser with acidic or neutral pH is preferred, as it will not affect the skin barrier function or the acid mantle. Cord stump must be kept clean without any application. Diaper area should be kept clean and dry with frequent change of diapers. Application of emollient in newborns born in families with high risk of atopy tends to reduce the risk of developing atopic dermatitis. Oil massage has multiple benefits and is recommended. Massage with sunflower oil, coconut oil or mineral oil are preferred over vegetable oils such as olive oil and mustard oil, which have been found to be detrimental to barrier function.see more
